Product Description
Get ready for the serious side of our favorite American light composer. First: have you noticed how certain works, musical or visual, have an uncanny knack for perfectly evoking the period when they were created? Thats one of the distinguishing features of the wonderful music on this new disc. The Symphony No.6 sounds exactly like the late 1940s, much the same way that classic post-war movies conjure that period. In fact, the Symphony No.6 might be the most cinematic of all of Gillis works in that form, with a wonderful sense of tension in the first movement that would be right at home on the soundtrack of The Big Sleep or This Gun for Hire. The second movement is full of excitement, like a modern analog to the scherzo of the Mendelssohn Scotch Symphony. The bluesiness of the third movement recalls Gershwin at his most relaxed, and the boisterous final movement with its cushy harmonies proves that Gillis had a lot in common with the great Broadway and Hollywood arrangers. The Symphony No.5 is probably the most serious of his symphonic output, reflecting the mood of the immediate postwar era. This contains one of his most beautiful slow movements (and if youre an ongoing fan of this series, you know how effective his quiet moments are); the keening sense of nostalgia often bears a striking resemblance to Bernard Herrmann (think in terms of his scores for The Devil and Daniel Webster or The Ghost and Mrs. Muir). The strictly fun piece of the collection is the Paul Bunyan Overture, full of rollicking spirits but, again, with a more contemplative sound. All of this is performed with the greatest enthusiasm and color by the Sinfonia Varsovia and Ian Hobson. An absolute must!
Customer Reviews:
Spectacular performance, OK music.......2006-07-01
This CD is frustrating. It's nice to have world premiere recordings, in astonishingly good sound of two major Gillis symphonies. Unfortunately, none of the pieces really catch fire, and the Paul Bunyan work in particular keeps interrupting itself, unable to find a consistent mood. Probably the best movement is the slow section of the 5th symphony. The ending is one of the most eloquent we have by Gillis. Elsewhere, the 6th Symphony features dull ideas that soon wear out their welcome, and each movement is far too long for its rather meager content. Certainly the 5th Symphony is a whole lot better, especially the last two movements. Gillis' shallow gestures and trite material grows "old" rather quickly, and as a whole these pieces did not sustain my interest. 5 stars for performance and recording, 1 star for the actual music. A disappointment!
Don Gillis Gets (Mostly) Serious .......2005-07-16
As I titled my earlier Amazon review ( at http://snipurl.com/gabm ) of the previous release of Don Gillis's 'Star-Spangled Symphony' and the 'Dance Symphony', he wrote 'Absolutely Top-Drawer Light American Symphonic Music.' His brand of brash pop-music-inflected orchestral music on that release was a spot-on representation of what it was like to live in America in the mid-twentieth century. And that is just as true with the current release - two symphonies written in the 1940s, plus his later 'Paul Bunyan Overture.' Except that in the symphonies he is going for a more serious statement.
Symphony No. 5 'In Memoriam' (1945) honors those who died in World War II and its tone is appropriately somber and at times monumental. But the materials are the same as in his lighter works -- walking tenths, rich brass chords, plangent wind melodies (in particular, the lovely, sad English horn melody of the middle movement) all in typical 1940s big-band influenced orchestration. This is evocative music but it is also immediately accessible and singularly American in its straightforwardness. The finale is a lilting 6/8 tarantella/jig sometimes sounding Italian, sometimes Irish --- a fitting evocation of the American melting-pot -- and always lively, celebratory in honor of those who served and survived. And it also suggests the burgeoning optimism of the immediate 'let's-make-up-for-lost-time' postwar era, but with reminiscences of the horrible sacrifices just past.
Symphony No. 6 'Mid-Century U.S.A.' (1948, and coming right after his hilarious and very popular 'Symphony No. 5 1/2') is more of the same but is in general much livelier and lighter. At times I think I hear Indian melodies (rather like those in MacDowell's 'Indian Suite') as well as typical pop-music harmonies, Coplandesque wistfulness, American dance rhythms and, again, that open-faced optimism so frequent in Gillis's music. It is amazing to me, as it was in the earlier release, that this music can be played so idiomatically by a Polish orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, conducted by a Briton, pianist/conductor Ian Hobson. This is their third Gillis release and one might think that's why they get it so right, but in fact from the very first release they have played as if they were an American orchestra, high praise in my book.
The opening number is the 'Paul Bunyan' overture' (1964) and it is a genuinely folksy, funny, bigger-the-life 7-minute boogie-based romp. The first time I put it in my player it was so enjoyable I immediately played it three times. Gillis had the gift of writing instantly memorable melodies, and this overture has several of them.
This is another treasurable release in what appears to be an ongoing series of recordings of major Gillis orchestral works. Bravo to Hobson, Sinfonia Varsovia and Albany Records for that.

Incomparable Singer with brilliant choice of songs.......2007-04-15
I first heard John Gary in the early 70's. I loved him then and love hime now. His voice is so pure, unstrained and soothing. He does not need special music engineering like most singers after him to make a good sound. His choice of songs -even the Irish ballads are perfect for his voice (and my listening pleasure). None of the songs in his albums would sound as good when sang by the other singers of his time or now- I am sorry but I think he is a lot more pleasing to hear than Tony Bennet, Frank SInatra, etc. It makes one dream again- make life and love timeless no matter how old one has become. I feel like falling in love all over again everytime I hear him. I wish that he has continued to sing, perhaps he has but I just have not seen or heard of him for several years. Thank God for John Gary!!!! and Thank you Amazon for carrying his Songs!
Great Songs by the last of his kind.......2006-11-15
I've been collecting John Gary's music from the very beginning and have
nearly all his music on 'albums' since I first heard him when I was in
the Navy and I'm glad to see that these great songs of his have come out on CDs.
I was lucky to actually hear him at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Hawaii back in about 1976. It was a wonderful experience.

From an Irish Family.......2005-07-04
Being from a part Irish family, the Irish standards on "Little Bit of Heaven" were part of the culture, especially by John Gary. I was by FAR the baby, being weaned on the Beatles and beyond, but everybody else thought this was pretty close to ... well, a little bit of heaven. I'm only giving it 4 stars because some may find it "old fashioned", which it is - big string arrangements, etc. But, boy, this guy has a voice, and I think these songs were meant to be done like this.
Here I'll Stay....!.......2003-04-17
Thank you Amazon for making this CD available. This CD captures your heart and soul. -- Music to take with you - wherever you go! John Gary at his finest -- as always. These beautiful songs, fit for any occasion - --and this fine voice-- provide the setting for meditation/relaxation, or to just write a letter to someone... in need of a tender touch -- or just for YOU to enjoy - over and over again.
At Last!.......2002-03-15
I have two scratchy albums from the 1970s that I never thought I'd be able to find on CDs. Lo and behold! Amazon offered both on the same CD. You have no idea how happy I am to hear John Gary's glorious, effortless voice again.
It's great that you notify customers when a product becomes available. Thanks, Amazon!

Customer Reviews:
Unconditionally .. one of his best recordings. .......2007-03-23
I go way back with George Benson. I was blown away by his playing in his early days. His amazing playing graced many an album and in many instances stole the thunder of the featured artist. Simply an amazing player.
I have to admit that I have not been a big fan of his post Bad Benson period save for "Weekend in L.A." which featured George at the height of his guitar and vocal powers. I found many of his "hit" albums to be too smooth, slick and laid back.
Then came this amazing recording. Surrounded by stellar musicians George out and out delivers. This is not background music. This music is beautiful, poignant, accessible and interesting. His voice is stronger than it's ever been during his vocals first and guitar second phase.
One of the things I most enjoyed is that George actually plays here without superimposing his voice over the notes, with his scatting, which eclipses the power of his playing.
McCoy Tyner shine gets some daylight here. He plays sensitively, melodically.
Everything about this recording has a mind towards the composition and the intent of the songs. The emotion comes straight through unfiltered. George really gets these songs!
This recoding starts out with one of the best vocal versions of "You Don't Know What Love Is", that I've heard. George injects a soulfulness along with the intensity of the wistfulness this song conveys. The same can be said of "Stardust". It's beautiful and soulfully done. He wraps that flexible voice around the notes and brings so much to this piece. It's a unique take on this song because he sings it so honestly.
"This is All I Ask" is an other favorite and highpoint.
"Stella By Starlight" is an uptempo instrumental done with an arrangement reminicent of Horace Silver's "Music of the Spheres" harmonies. It's nice to hear George just play again.
"Here, There and Everwhere" is very nice take on the Beatles classic. Staying true to the piece but ever so distinct from the original. Again George shines on guitar and vocals.
This is simply one of his very best recordings period.
Smooth as silk and never bettered.......2006-01-03
This classic album deserves to be re-issued. It's one of George Benson's best. Armed with McCoy Tyner on piano and a great band - this is underrated Benson at his smoothest and most endearing. His version of Here There and Everywhere is scintillating as are his other renditions of jazz standards. Well produced - my only complaint about this is that it's too short as an album and should've had more tracks. Highly recommended.
ROMANTIC.......2004-01-21
This is the best George Benson CD ever!
The soft jazz and heartbreak is felt especially in the first song. I keep this cd playing while in my office. It's a hit!
"Here, There & Everywhere".......2003-11-20
George Benson is not only a talented guitarist but also one of the greatest vocalists in the music industry. This CD is one of the best I have from my collection which include "Breezin," "Give Me The Night," "20/20," "Living Inside Your Love," "Witchcraft," "Big Boss Band" and "Best of George Benson:The Instrumentals."
I had the chance to listen to a live interview with George Benson way back in 1993 at Jazz-FM 103.1, when he was promoting his current album ("Love Remembers") that time. He started playing the Ukelele at age seven and the greatest influences in his life are Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery and Grant Green. His favorite contemporary singers are Al Jarreau, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson, to name a few. According to him, if he were born 20-30 years earlier, he would have been a pianist or a violinist.
He had voice lessons with a professional instructor who also trained Stevie Wonder. (That instructor really did a great job!) This is evident by the countless hits he recorded such as "On Broadway," "This Masquerade," "Moody's Mood," "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You," "Unchained Melody," "You Don't Know What Love Is," which is the first track on this CD, followed by my all-time favorites, a Hoagy Carmichael/Mitchell Parish composition, "Stardust," and "This Is All I Ask," to mention a few.
I was so touched by his wonderful and heartfelt interpretation of the famous Lennon/McCartney classic, "Here There And Everywhere" that I listened to it repeatedly. The instrumental part is so impressive that I can't help mentioning the equally talented back-up jazz musicians namely, McCoy Tyner (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Herlin Riley (drums), Lenny Castro (percussions), Louis Hays (drums) and Al Foster (drums), and of course Mr. Benson himself on guitar. In my opinion, this track is the very highlight of this CD. Congratulations to all of you guys for a stellar performance!
"I want him everywhere
And if he's beside me I know I need never care
But to love him is to need him everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching his eyes and hoping I'm always there
I want him everywhere
And if he's beside me I know I need never care
But to love him is to need him everywhere
To be there and everywhere
Here, there and everywhere."
According to George, "he felt so good doing this project as well as playing with some of the finest jazz musicians with whom he had long-time relationships." Thank you, Mr. Benson for doing an excellent job!
This CD is essential not only to George Benson's fans but also to all jazz buffs. You will have a lifetime of listening pleasure!
Fantastic!.......2003-05-20
This is one of the greatest GB albums - a collection of vocal standards like "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Stardust" and "This Is All I Ask", it features George's wonderful voice and brilliant guitar playing plus an all-star band including the amazing painist Mcoy Tyner.

We recently vacationed in Los Cabos, Mexico. While shopping in town the clerk recommended this CD for easy listening around the pool. It was very relaxing and easy to listen to while visiting with the other couples we were traveling with. We even enjoyed dancing in the moonlight to these romantic selections!
A few days later I returned to the same little music shop in town to purchase another copy for a gift, but they had sold out. I'm sure glad that Amazon carried this CD!

Customer Reviews:
Worth a listen........2002-05-14
First there was Mantovani with his strings, then Bert Kaempfert added guitars and trumpet to strings, and next came James Last who used full orchestration and voices. The selections on this particular album are very good with 'Elizabethan Serenade'and one of my favourites 'Whiter Shade of Pale' being the standouts. A different version of 'What Now My Love'. The sound quality on this Spectrum label leaves a lot to be desired but other than that, it's not bad.
Great Music.......2001-06-17
The first time I heard James Last music played was on PBS television and I just loved it. This CD is just beautiful. His style of music playing just gets you and keeps you in a very happy frame of mind. He plays romantic music and toe tapping music. I highly recommend this CD = it it GREAT.
