Editorial Reviews
From the Label
This 1986 session is one of Scofield's watershed dates. It was the first to feature the rhythm duo of bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers (ex-Parliament/Funkadelic) that powered Scofield's successful live shows of the late '80s. Old friends Mitchel Forman (keyboards) and Don Alias (percussion) are also present, plus Hiram Bullock adding rhythm guitar on three tracks.

Party in a Jewl Case.......2002-05-09
First heard of these guys years ago when the Blues Bros. put out "Briefcase full of Blues", finally got around to checking them out and couldn't be happier. It's easy to see where Aykroyd in particular being a Canadian was enthused with these guys. The Downchild songs are among the best they covered. If you like Houserockers in general buy this it delivers.
Some Are More Famous, Nobody Does It Better!.......2001-03-26
Caught Downchild in Key Largo on the last gig of their winter 2001 tour of the Florida Keys. I hadn't seen Donnie Walsh and his great blues/jazz band since about 1982 in Toronto. First caught them in 1971 or so when they played my high school in London, Ontario. Fantastic to see them still in the game and cooking fit to set the building on fire.
Donnie Walsh demonstrated his mastery of blues harmonica and guitar throughout the set--no surprise there. Everyone else in the band displayed formidable chops and a real appreciation of ensemble playing--even with all the virtuoso soloing and fills, no-one stepped on anyone else, ever. Special surprise at this gig was the appearance of guest alto saxophonist Richie Cole--well known in the jazz world for his Phil Woods/Charlie Parker-influenced playing. One of the evening's high points was Richie's solo spot, where he took the band down low and demonstrated a simply breathtaking alto technique. Close your eyes and you'd have sworn it was Charlie Parker himself up there, spiraling off on the upper intervals of the chords at warp speed. Just a great treat to watch from ten feet away.
Sadly, Donnie's brother Hock, with whom he founded Downchild some thirty-plus years ago, passed away this past year. He's greatly missed, but the band goes on under Donnie's leadership, its power and enthusiasm intact. Suffice to say that there is a very good reason the Blues Brothers (Dan Akroyd and John Belushi in character, in case you didn't know) covered so many of this great Canadian blues band's original tunes: they're superb. Check out "Flip, Flop, and Fly", "Everything I Need (Almost)" and "Shotgun Blues" for starters. Then listen on from there. This fairly definitive collection of Downchild's best is thoroughly deserving of inclusion in anyone's music library, whether your tastes run from blues to jazz to rock 'n' roll. Get A MATTER OF TIME: THE DOWNCHILD COLLECTION--it's well worth the price of admission.

Great British blues.......2006-06-23
Blue matter the third album from Savoy Brown a talented blues rock group in the sixties blues rock boom.Savoy brown was a superb five piece outfit fronted by the greatKim Simmonds and Lonesome Dave peverett on guitars and vocals. This was their best album after the terrific Raw Sienna.I got this album yesterday and have played it a number of times.I have given it a 4 star rating only because of the less than great sound quality. This album needs a good remastering job. This nice album features great tracks like Train to nowhere, dont turn me from your door, may be wrong,it hurts me too and the excellent Louisiana blues.Highly recommended to fans of blues rock music.
MOSTLY DISAPPOINTING..........2005-02-25
If you're snooping around for a sample of Savoy Brown, I'd recommend "Raw Sienna" over this one: better guitar playing and Chris Youlden's vocals are much stronger (possibly because they were recorded better) on "R S". This CD has a few good moments (and some very good vocals from Lonesome Dave on the live cuts) but otherwise pales by comparison.
I'd Rather Be Blue!.......2003-09-27
After the success of their first (American) album, Savoy Brown, like many bands, finds writing and recording a second one problematic. (Most bands literally put their heart and soul into their first album in an effort to get someone at a label to just listen to it; once they are signed, they find they have no time to work on a second one.) Therefore, Blue Matter feels like a transitional effort. Struggling to find enough time (and good material), Kim and Co. eventually solve the problem by recording three of the cuts live. (Singer Chris Youlden was ill; on those dates, the vocals were handled expertly by Lonesome Dave.) Still, there is enough meat here to make up a fairly decent effort. "Tolling Bells" is the standout number, a hauntingly melancholic effort featuring great guitar/piano interplay and Chris's mournful singing. "Train to Nowhere" fascinates because of it's experimental horn sounds and somewhat opaque lyrics. "Grits Ain't Groceries" sounds like an Electric Flag number, with it's brassy horns, while "Vicksburg Blues" features fine Bob Hall piano playing very much in the style of Albert Ammons or any one of the old boogie-woogie players from the 1930's. "Ring In His Nose" swings like crazy, as Chris playfully tells a story all too familiar to married couples. Finally, "Louisiana Blues" rocks like mad, with Kim's blistering riffs and Lonesome Dave's funky vocals injecting fresh energy into this Muddy Waters classic. ("Louisiana Blues" would remain a live staple for Dave's next band, Foghat, until his untimely death some 30 years later.) Unfortunately, the poor sound quality of this CD will mar the listener's enjoyment of an otherwise fine effort. (Oddly enough, the live cuts sound clearer than the studio ones.) Still, a very good effort by the band and worthy of a new sound mix, especially since the poor quality of the current pressing may leave you feeling a little blue.
Awesome and unrecognized........2003-07-15
Listen, I'm from Chicago and I know the Blues. Buy this little known gem of an CD.
Good and mediocre.......2002-04-04
"Train to Nowhere" is fine. "Ring in His Nose" is excellent. The rest of the tracks don't stand up to the test of time.

Scofields funky 80's fusion.......2003-07-28
The only thing that makes this sound at all dated is some of Mitchell Forman's keyboard samples, but they are still cool, particularly the pad sounds on the last cut "Time Marches On."
Overall, I would say the lenghthier tunes on the album are the best, "Trim" and "Time Marches On" clocking in at seven and one half minutes a piece.
In some ways, I find this album more listenable then Sco's current, more jazz oriented releases. This is truly an unparalled band, and as one reviewer noted, the bass/drums combo is exceptionally killer. Aside from the technical prowess displayed, the album is suprisingly catchy. One of the albums I own that is easy to listen to in it's entirety, day after day. It's not trying at all, but still deep music. I only wish it would be remastered for better sound quality as this release is quite old.
Scofield Who? Check out Dennis Chambers and Gary Grainger!.......1999-07-19
John Scofield is most known for his recent jazz albums which are good, however, his early fusion matierial is incredible. If there is one thing John knows how to do, it's putting together great bands! In this case he has put together one of the greatest and least known combinations of Drummer and Bassist in Dennis Chambers and Gary Grainger. Track #7 "The Nag" will blow your mind! "Now She's Blonde" as the sweetest groove, but then again all of the tracks do. These two players play so tight it is a joy to listen to them. They play together on 2 other John Scofield albums, "Loud Jazz" and "Pick Hits Live", if you are a bassist or drummer, you NEED to hear these albums.
Sco's followup to "Still Warm" should not be overlooked!.......1999-06-27
It's inevitable that when an artist puts out such a completely phenomenal record like "Still Warm", his next record is bound to be a letdown. "Blue Matter" is not at the level of its predecessor, but it's pretty darn close.
The records begins with Scofield's funkiest of all his songs, "Blue Matter", which features some hot soloing by Scofield laid over a slap-bass playing in perfect unison with double-bass drums. "Trim" maintains the energy level, while "Heavan Hill" showcases Scofield's softer side. "Now She's Blonde" is a good song with a great title, but it's on "The Nag" where Sco lets it loose; his solo there is one of his very finest of his '80's "fusion" era.
Scofield uses a band that lacks the big names of the predecing record, but are still more than competent (in fact, Dennis Chambers has since gone on to become one of the most sought-after drummers in fusion and rock). Plus, Steve Swallow carries over as producer, and he does another fine job, although the producation is a little rougher than on "Still Warm". Perhaps a more raw sound was intended.
If you love "Still Warm", you will like "Blue Matter". Definitely worth the purchase.

Customer Reviews:
A true classic every rock and roller has to have........2006-12-28
British Blues from one of the coolest bands ever. Kim Simmonds on lead guitar regroups his band in 1968 for their third lp.. Kim like a lot of others at the time captures the tone that Eric Clapton discovered in John Mayals blues breakers. Chris Youlden on vocals (what ever happened to him?) Lonesome Dave Peverett (guitar & some vocals), Tony Stevens (bass), and Roger Earl (drums) The three later on forming FOGHAT. Although a bit under produced by today's standards. Blue Matter and A Step Further remain two of my all time favorite rockin' blues lp, cd's. Since you can now get both in one package. Take a chance and grab a real honest piece of rock and roll history.

10 stars. This is such a great CD. Obviously, Shim is not an imitator of Joe Henderson, and has his own voice. The CD also exhibits his exceptional compositional skills. Since this CD was issued, he dissapeared. I wonder what he is doing now. Mark, please come back! The Jazz world needs you for its progress! Mark Turner and Joshua Redman do not please me! I know this review is not helpful.

More pop-folk than Echolyn-style prog. Pretty good cd..........2007-07-06
Echolyn is right up there as one of my top two or three progressive rock bands of the past ten years or so, and I've always enjoyed the pleasant vocals of Brett Kull. (Of course, he's also a pretty fantastic guitarist too!) Just got his 2002 solo cd "Orange-ish Blue", and it does not disappoint. Close to 50 minutes of music here, 13 songs in the 3, 4, 5 minute range. These are lighter and a bit more pop-like than the Echolyn standard fare, all written or co-written by Kull. Chris Buzby (keys) and Paul Ramsey (drums) are here to assist their fellow bandmate, and a Molly Decker provides some nice female harmonies here and there. The lyrics are mostly reflective or melancholy in nature, but the melodies are mostly upbeat and bright. If (like me) you have any love for Kull-sung Echolyn songs like "Suffocating The Bloom", "Never The Same", "Too Late For Everything", or even "Arc Of Descent", buy this cd with confidence.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.5/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 8/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.6 ("4 stars")
