Tenor Philip Chaffin's Warm Spring Night is a rich and romantic follow-up to his Where Do I Go from You?, which was the inaugural release for the label he co-owns with producer Tommy Krasker, PS Classics. While that solo debut was big-band-themed, Warm Spring Night is more eclectic, collecting a number of less-familiar love songs by well-known songwriters, such as Kern and Hammerstein ("Don't Ever Leave Me," "Heaven in My Arms"), Schwartz and Dietz ("Haunted Heart"), George and Ira Gershwin ("Evening Star"), and Stephen Sondheim ("Silly People," cut from A Little Night Music). Other unusual fare includes two songs from Menken and Rice's King David (the title tune, "When in Love"), and Ricky Ian Gordon and Richard Nelson's "If It Is True" (from My Life with Albertine). Most of the songs are accompanied by a lush orchestra, but Jeff Harris's piano is the only accompaniment in the highlight of the album, the standard "That's All" (no, not the Genesis song), which with "My Romance" and "Out of My Dreams" proves that great standards can coexist happily with unfamiliar fare in a classy setting such as this. --David Horiuchi

As reported at Playbill On-Line, the second solo album by PS Classics co-founder and A&R Director Philip Chaffin, "Warm Spring Night", hits stores on June 7th. Unlike his debut album, "Where Do I Go From You?," which featured songs and arrangements of the big-band era, "Warm Spring Night" will feature Broadway material spanning almost 80 years, from Kern and Duke to Coleman and Sondheim, and includes a number of rarities, including the first recording of a Gershwin song from 1924 ("Evening Star," cut from Lady, Be Good!). Kevin Stites (Nine, Fiddler on the Roof) conducts the 25-piece orchestra. Orchestrators include Larry Hochman, Bruce Coughlin and Glen Daum. Also, Rebecca Rebecca Luker joins on vocals for Vernon Duke, and Howard Dietz's "Sailing at Midnight."

A new generation of music lovers deserves to know, understand and appreciate the greatness of Mario Lanza. Five decades after his passing, millions of lovers of "grand voices" still are held in awe by the power, passion and beauty of his voice.

This selection of recordings has a number of fine selections that give a small "flavor" of his fantastic talent and skills. It is a good beginning for someone who wants to know "The American Caruso."

In a professional career that lasted just a bit over ten years Mario Lanza created more memorable recordings, broadcasts, concert perfomances and feature films than any other major vocalist in the classical and pop-jazz music genre. He was a man blessed with arguably the finest tenor voice in recorded music. Fans of Caruso, Pavarotti, Jan Peerce, Placido Domingo or Careras may argue that their tenor interpreted a particular aria better than anyone else but few if any can argue against the sheer beauty, power and emotion of Mario Lanza. He achieved worldwide success too fast and his penchant for the good life: wine, women and good food got the best of him in the end. It is so sad, when one contemplates Lanza's short but brilliant career and what might have been, that he was gone at age 38, an age when some tenors are just beginning to hit their stride. This album is a fine overview of some of his most memorable heavy classics as well as lighter operetta standards and showcases his voice so well. Nearly fifty years have transpired since his untimely death in 1959 and there is yet to appear on the scene a tenor with the power, charisma or sheer beauty of Lanza's voice. I highly recommend this album to the Lanza novice or those just starting their Opera CD collections.

This album has some really splendid songs, and yes, it's a good introduction to the King of the high last notes. I grew up with one of Lanza's albums and more or less learned to sing by singing along with his wonderful warm voice. What good energy he had... and too bad he died so young (sigh). It certainly lifts my spirits to listen to his music again and I hope anyone reading this will take a chance and get to know him too.

I recommend this collection as a good starting point for those interested in this extraordinary tenor. It's not a complete representation of the man by any stretch of the imagination, but it includes a handful of unforgettable recordings that will make newcomers to Lanza sit up in astonishment.

Highlights include the immortal Serenade & Golden Days from The Student Prince, Beloved (from the film version of the Student Prince, and arguably Lanza's best English-language love song), Because You're Mine, If I Loved You, and the stirring Addio Alla Madre from Cavalleria Rusticana. If love songs seem a little over-represented at the expense of arias and (notably) Italian & Neapolitan Songs, then blame BMG for their habitual neglect of Lanza's more serious side. In any event, this is essentially a one-CD version of the three-CD set, The Mario Lanza Collection. All of the renditions are the same as on the earlier CD, as are the sound sources. With the exception of The Student Prince Serenade, most of the selections here have never sounded better.

Be aware, however, that several of the arias are in fact retakes of more familiar versions. Vesti La Giubba, for instance, is an alternate take from Lanza's May 1950 session, and although the tenor is in great voice, the orchestra lets him down on the climactic phrase by moving on before he has finished his High A on the word "infranto". The Flower Song is even more unrestrained than the familiar take - great fun, but not the kind of recording you'd want newcomers to Lanza to hear! (Lanza never quite "nailed" this aria, but his heart was in the right place.) La Donna E Mobile is the familiar 1950 version in the first half, but is replaced by an inferior retake in the second half, followed by an edited-in High B ending (on "pensier") from the original recording!

The only truly bad recording is the inexplicably popular With A Song In My Heart. Lanza is unfocused, and strains his way throughout the piece. Yours Is My Heart Alone is somewhat better, but is easily surpassed by the tenor's 1956 recording with the conductor Henri Rene (and currently unavailable on CD).

The "Greatest Hits" are here: the million-selling Be My Love, Loveliest Night of The Year and the aforementioned Because You're Mine. I have to confess to an aversion to the first two - Lanza was often a far better singer than these recordings suggest - but most fans, I'm sure, will continue to cherish them. Besides, what tenor since Lanza has ever sung Be My Love without straining his way through the wretched thing and then fudging the High C at the end? Lanza made it his own, and to be fair to the song, it is actually a very difficult piece to pull off, as Messrs Domingo, Carreras and Leech will no doubt attest. But that was also one of Lanza's most under-appreciated strengths - he made everything sound so easy. Listeners accustomed to the laborious efforts of most present-day tenors will be astounded by the freshness, ease, and sheer bravado of these performances.

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

    Tenor Philip Chaffin's Warm Spring Night is a rich and romantic follow-up to his Where Do I Go from You?, which was the inaugural release for the label he co-owns with producer Tommy Krasker, PS Classics. While that solo debut was big-band-themed, Warm Spring Night is more eclectic, collecting a number of less-familiar love songs by well-known songwriters, such as Kern and Hammerstein ("Don't Ever Leave Me," "Heaven in My Arms"), Schwartz and Dietz ("Haunted Heart"), George and Ira Gershwin ("Evening Star"), and Stephen Sondheim ("Silly People," cut from A Little Night Music). Other unusual fare includes two songs from Menken and Rice's King David (the title tune, "When in Love"), and Ricky Ian Gordon and Richard Nelson's "If It Is True" (from My Life with Albertine). Most of the songs are accompanied by a lush orchestra, but Jeff Harris's piano is the only accompaniment in the highlight of the album, the standard "That's All" (no, not the Genesis song), which with "My Romance" and "Out of My Dreams" proves that great standards can coexist happily with unfamiliar fare in a classy setting such as this. --David Horiuchi

    As reported at Playbill On-Line, the second solo album by PS Classics co-founder and A&R Director Philip Chaffin, "Warm Spring Night", hits stores on June 7th. Unlike his debut album, "Where Do I Go From You?," which featured songs and arrangements of the big-band era, "Warm Spring Night" will feature Broadway material spanning almost 80 years, from Kern and Duke to Coleman and Sondheim, and includes a number of rarities, including the first recording of a Gershwin song from 1924 ("Evening Star," cut from Lady, Be Good!). Kevin Stites (Nine, Fiddler on the Roof) conducts the 25-piece orchestra. Orchestrators include Larry Hochman, Bruce Coughlin and Glen Daum. Also, Rebecca Rebecca Luker joins on vocals for Vernon Duke, and Howard Dietz's "Sailing at Midnight."

    Phillip Chaffin has a voice that is magic! It's soothing, easy to listen to, and hits every note and emotion perfectly. This is a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Broadway or loves the sound of the "crooners" of the 40s. Terrific!

    On Warm Spring Night, Philip Chaffin offers richly sung performances of classic songs both new and old. On the title track, Chaffin's voice soars majestically over the lushly recorded orchestral arrangement. Chaffin later switches gears entirely for a charmingly rendition of "Heaven in My Arms" that is so playful that I can't help but smile every time I hear it.

    On a side note, collectors may be interested to know that this album features the premiere recording of "Evening Star" by George and Ira Gershwin.

    Philip Chaffin's first CD, Where Do I Go From You, is never far from my CD player, so I was pleased to see the arrival of his much delayed second outing, Warm Spring Night. Where the earlier CD was a salute to the Big Band Era--at least in style--this time the feeling is more intimate, with songs chosen for their dramatic as well as melodic appeal. Chaffin's warm tenor voice is just right for the exquisite "Haunted Heart," and he caresses the hell out of "My Romance" and "That's All." I was delighted to find one of my favorites, "There's A Room In My House" (from the ill-fated A Family Affair), and a surprisingly effective "Out of My Dreams" (from Oklahoma!). Chaffin also offers a mini-autobiography of himself that sweetly unaffected and frequently touching--just like his performances. [Ghostlight Records]

      I'm more a fan of classic popular standards than of classical music, but as the classical numbers give Mario Lanza a little more opportunity to show off his glorious voice, I find myself enjoying these fully as much as the popular selections.

      His approach to popular song is admittedly on the operatic side, and it's fascinating to hear how well such pieces translate into a more classical orchestration. And Lanza's versions stand as equals alongside the popular versions (by such greats as Perry Como, Frankie Laine, Kate Smith, Georgia Gibbs, Dean Martin, Vic Damone and Vaughn Monroe) that have been among my favorites for many years.

      The spoken introductions on the selections from his show are an added bonus, and (contrary to one of the reviews below) these songs are beautifully done. The fact that they are live and only minimally rehearsed only makes them all the more amazing.

      The 2-cd set consists of high quality recordings of 47 songs and is a real bargain at the price.

      This is (unintentionally, I'm sure) a warts-and-all illustration of Mario Lanza. True, there are magnificent recordings scattered throughout (Serenade, Beloved, E Lucevan Le Stelle, Passione, etc) but the overall impression one is left with is of a sloppy and undisciplined singer who just happened to possess a great voice. The fault lies squarely with BMG and their predilection for selecting the very worst of Lanza, and placing it next to the best. Many of the inferior choices come from Lanza's Coca-Cola radio show, recorded between 1951 and 1952, and featuring prominently on Disc Two. (Disc One is a more consistent selection, and repeats the same tracks from the British one-CD set "The Ultimate Collection", reviewed elsewhere on this site.)

      The "Coke" shows were generally under-rehearsed, and represent what in many respects was the most chaotic period of Lanza's short life. Thus it's not surprising that the tenor often sounds unfamiliar with his material, is sometimes off-key, and also makes numerous stylistic lapses. Never intended to be heard beyond their initial broadcast, these supposedly "one-off affairs" nevertheless did produce the occasional gem, but one needs to look elsewhere for examples of those. The three exceptions on this set are the gloriously romantic If I Loved You, One Night of Love, and the poignant Memories. Danny Boy also deserves honorable mention, although the ending should have been remade.

      O Paradiso, Somewhere a Voice is Calling, Core 'Ngrato, Deep in My Heart, and With a Song in My Heart represent low points from the Coke Shows. Other poor choices include And This is My Beloved, from the disastrous Lanza on Broadway LP; a rough-as-old-boots Una Furtiva Lagrima; and an off-pitch Cielo E Mar (ironically the one studio recording on this set that *is* inferior to Lanza's Coke Show rendition).

      Mario Lanza was blessed with the most spectacular natural tenor voice of the 20th century. Is it too much to expect for BMG to honor his memory more selectively? Where are Lanza's sublime recordings of Che Gelida Manina from "La Boheme", his M'appari, the Improvviso from Andrea Chenier and his unsurpassed Otello Monologue? Or the fabulous Some Day, the gorgeous 'A Vucchella and Lanza's own favorite recording, the haunting Voce E Notte? For the very best of Mario Lanza, buyers will need to look elsewhere.

      I am an 18-year old student. I bought this album after I heard a few of Lanza's songs in the Peter Jackson film, "Heavenly Creatures" and I must say that it is one of the best albums I have ever bought. Lanza was a master of his vocal instrument, drawing every ounce of feeling and energy from the notes and words to create a masterpiece of every song. The resulting pieces in this album combine to make up a beautiful and varied work, with something for every mood you may be in. The classics (such as "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life"), are obviously appealing, but the lesser-known pieces (my favourite: "Una Furtiva Lagrima") make this a wonderfully enlightening experience. This is a truly Great album.

      When I heard that Mario Lanza had died so many years ago, I was a college student who already owned five or six LP's of his songs. I was truly brokenhearted We had lost such a fine singer at such an early age. This CD is one of the best because of the diversity of songs, all marvelous.A fine addition to any collection.

      Beautiful music, beautiful voice-but unfortunately mismatched, and poorly recorded- "opera" style of delivery detracts from enjoyment- and recording poor quality in that it alternately blares out and drops to inaudible- second CD really poor- looks like one thrown in for good measure.
      I am not musically trained nor a critic but I have loved these songs for many years and this was a disappointment.

      "Brilliant Sky, Infinite Sky" is wonderful; so is "Love Scenes;" but I bought this recording for the last piece, called "Morningsongs." The performance is incredible; the baritone soloist is one of the best I've heard. The piece is so full of passion and sadness and beauty that you will never forget it. I particularly love the middle movement called "Blue Animals." Kernis - a brilliant composer! - uses the chamber ensemble to its fullest capabilities, melding instrumental colors with vocal sounds and syllables to create a full and rich, yet intimate, texture. I checked this recording out at a university library and after hearing it immediately bought my own copy.
