Editorial Reviews

Even for seasoned jazz veterans who place a premium on originality, formulas can exert a great appeal. The formula at work on Special Encounter can pretty much be summed up by the name Bill Evans, whose legend as an architect of the modern piano trio rests on the kind of lyrical, bop-tinged ballads and mid-tempo numbers offered here. Joined by a pair of decorated Americans, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian (a member of Evans' groundbreaking turn-of-the-1960s trio), Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi brings his usual elegance and insight to a smart mix of standards such as "You've Changed," Haden staples such as "Waltz for Ruth" and Pieranunzi originals such as the evocative "Secret Nights." If not all that special an encounter, it's certainly an agreeable one: the players, who have hooked up in different settings before, bond as a trio. The mood builds as the musicianship deepens. --Lloyd Sachs

Must Be the Greatest!.......2007-07-01
Unreal heavy guitar blues workout with organ songs too. Whew! Man, these guys let it go!
What can said? Joe works the wah-wah like mad and I just can't get enuf of the humbuckin' Les Paul crunk... wish we had more of this, man!!!
SUPER disc.......2007-05-12
WOW! That's the first word that popped into my head after this 40-minute Live in Concert album came to an end . I always knew the James Gang was a hard rock band a bit heavier than the rest, but I had *no* idea they were actually THIS heavy!
I'm serious when I say this album might out-rock Zeppelin and Deep Purple's heaviest moments during their prime. I have a hard time understanding HOW this album could go by all these years unnoticed by the majority of people who like to rock out to the classic 70's stuff. This is just an extremely heavy album. There's nothing else I can say!
When you first hear this album, the first song is called "Stop". Your first impression might be that the album is old, muddy and dated. However, it only sounds like that because the music is so heavy, technology was having trouble back then capturing these musicians at their absolute heaviest and putting it on record.
This live version of "Walk Away" is quite different from the one radio stations play. If you're used to that version only (like me) you're going to be in for a pleasant surprise. This version starts off with a heavy musical bit before the vocals come in. It's pretty clear the James Gang wanted this version to be all about power and intensity, which explains why the guitars and drums are so loud and in your face. If I have one complaint, it's that the guitar section from the studio version that ends the song isn't here. Instead, the song just comes to a sudden end. It's really not much of a complaint, because you'll be so excited and shocked at just how heavy the song is, you probably won't even notice.
"Lost Woman" is 18 total minutes of straight blistering guitar work and extremely heavy drumming and bass. In fact, there's moments on this album where Jim Fox drums with *just* as much extreme speed as Keith Moon. Very few people can drum like that. This song separates the men from the boys.
"Take a Look Around" is probably the only moment on the entire album where all the heavy guitars, keyboards and drums take a back seat to a pretty vocal melody. That means, out of 40 minutes of music, only 4 minutes is devoted to a somewhat quiet tune. The rest of the album is some of the heaviest music I've ever heard, and definitely one of the heaviest live albums I've heard from a 70's rock artist.
I said to my dad that he probably won't be able to handle it. Of course he disagrees, but I think I'm right in this case! Joe Walsh and the James Gang live and tearin' it up!
3.5 Stars: Pretty Good.......2007-03-05
I just bought this album and have listened to most of it. What I've heard I've liked. "Stop" is really good; "Walk Away" is even better. The rest of it is a bit trippy. I thought Walsh was more of a comic-rock kind of guy (As in his "Ordinary Average Guy" single). Better song writing than I'd expect. Cherck out the 71 version of "Walk Away." Amazing.
The sound, however is not the greatest. It seems that they have the mics in the balconies rather than near the band. This might be the only detration from a pretty good record. I'm looking foreward to "You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind" from Walsh.
The Best of Joe Walsh .......2007-02-15
This is Joe at his finest and the James Gang is his best rhythm section. He knows it too, thats why he reformed the group in 2006 and is touring with the JG again! Go Joe. The 2 organ tracks Take a Look Around and Tend My Garden and done very well live and Joe rips on the Hammond organ as well as the guitar. Stop! and Walk Away blow away the studio versions also. Get this record if you are a Joe Walsh fan.
James Gang - 'Live In Concert' (MCA).......2007-02-14
Good 1971 live recording of the James Gang at their very best. Tracks that certainly had me sit up and take full notice were "Stop", their Albert King's cover "You're Gonna Need Me", their sole hit "Walk Away" and the awesome seventeen minute Yardbirds cover "Lost Woman". It's been so long since I've heard a James Gang lp or CD. Unforgetable great early '70's album rock to be fully taken in. Line-up: Joe Walsh-guitar, keyboards&vocals, Dale Peters-bass&vocals and Jim Fox-drums,organ&vocals. If you dug some of the era's better known bands like Bad Company, Mountain, Faces and Grand Funk, you should like this archive release a lot. A definite should-have.

Haitink's integral set of Beethoven Symphonies with the London Symphony has none of the stodginess that sometimes afflicted his earlier recordings with the Concertgebouw. His restudy of the works, and the presence of concert audiences translate into faster tempos, sharper accents, wider dynamic range and an overall sense of energy that imbue these nine masterpieces. Here, the Classic style is wed to Romantic expressivity but not to Romantic excess, Competition is abundant, ranging from Toscanini, Furtwängler, and the 1963 von Karajan to recent sets from the sometimes hyperkinetic Vanska, the more traditional Abbado, and the insightful Barenboim. But this new Haitink set, available in hybrid SACD/CD, is a solid contender.
The early First and Second symphonies benefit from Haitink's leaner, more vivacious approach. The Eroica also sounds fresher. Its slow movement is still a funeral march, but moves a hair faster this time, just enough to be the difference between a pace that drags and a pace that flows and retains interest. In the outer movements, there's a new spring to the rhythms and clarity in orchestral balances, and this Eroica has the cumulative intensity to make its full effect. Haitink's Fourth is in a grander mold than we usually hear. While never overblown, it has some of the wider scope and heroism of the odd-numbered symphonies. Like the Eroica, it is rhythmically vigorous and the prominent tympani and brass make an impact that sweeps the listener along. The Fifth can suffer from over-exposure but here it has a variety of tonal colors, tempos, and dynamics that make it seem newly minted while no less grand. The propulsive finale, with its pounding tympani and expertly played journey to transcendence, is especially memorable.
The Sixth, the Pastorale, has that same feeling, its flowing tempos and skillful interpretive choices make this one of the best Sixths since Böhm's, with plenty of excitement in the Storm and warmth in the final movement. The Seventh gets a buoyant reading, predominately lyrical without neglecting its powerful rhythms. The driven final movement is exhilarating without being hectic. The Eighth is often considered the slightest of the Nine but Haitink's brisk tempos make it dance and swagger; the lyrical sections played with engaging warmth. As for the Ninth, it is miles ahead of Haitink's earlier versions. The harmonic mist that opens the work is well delineated, the contrasts within movements carefully marked, the Scherzo bursting with energy, the incomparable Adagio sings at a more fluid tempo, the choral final movement as good as any in the catalogue, its structure crystal clear under Haitink's baton. The major filler in the set is the often scorned Triple Concerto, which gets a performance of warm lyricism that can only elevate its status.
The playing of the London Symphony is phenomenal, especially since these are live recordings. The violins' tone glows with radiance, their precise articulation helps make the rhythms energetic, the winds are uniformly excellent, the brass sleekly powerful, the potent percussion authoritative in climaxes. If a criticism can be made it would be that bass lines are sometimes weaker than desirable, perhaps a function of engineering that varies in clarity from disc to disc but is never less than good. In sum, a major addition to the Beethoven Symphony discography. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Worth every Penny !.......2007-06-25
I finally listened to every symphony after 2 weeks. I have to say, every performance sounded quite prestine. I especially enjoyed the 6th and the 9th.
I agree with one reviewer in that the first movement of the 5th seemed a tad fast. Honestly thats the only complaint I have of this collection. If you enjoy classical music and appreciate high fidelity music, this is a must have !
Over all very good, in places great.......2007-04-10
These recordings have outstanding sound quality, as other reviewers have said. None of them are less than worthwhile, and I think the rendition of the Eroica is sensational, the best I've heard. The 9th is also among the best. The 5th, though, is not in the same class. Another reviewer has commented on the tempo of the first movement, which I agree is too fast; unfortunately, so is much of the rest of the piece. (Bernstein's 1990 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic is much better.) Still, no one could fault the LSO's playing, or the sound. Worth the money for the Eroica and the 9th alone.
smoothed out edges.......2007-03-03
Unlike some other recordings of Beethoven's work, this compilation permeates the composer's will and presents a series of golden renditions. The assembly of London musicians is in top form (which is usual for them) and they seem motivated to convey all nuances throughout. For those who long to use these compositions for peace of mind, feel assured that that peace will indeed come.
Solid live performances, great sound, but a little identity crisis?.......2007-02-27
[This review refers to non-Hydrid SACD versions of these performances]
When I first listened through this cycle I was impressed and rated it 5-stars. I remain impressed, but something about these performances bothers me, a sort of unevenness that is overcome on first listen by the excitement. So I am re-reviewing with a 4-star rating.
I do not think, as some have suggested, that these are per se "historically informed performances" (what performance isn't historically informed, after all?). I would describe them as having (on balance) an updated traditional approach which benefits from generally well-balanced orchestral forces, brisk tempi, modest levels of conductor-induced drama and nuance, and remarkable sound quality that lets all the facets of the music shine through (the tympani occasionally jump out a bit too far for my tastes, as if they're perched on the conductor's podium). However, Haitink's cadences in these live recordings seems a little uneven to me, distracting ever so slightly from the natural momentum.
I found myself thinking that the the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the 5th (at least in places) sound a bit like HIP performances, but the others (notably the 4th, which has a surprisingly big sound and broad, sweeping lines) sound like relatively brisk "big-band" treatments. Maybe that is simply Beethoven's music changing and not Haitink's interpretations, but I doubt it. I can't decide whether the legendary conductor is 1) pandering to HIP enthusiasts with a little extra speed here and there, 2) just can't decide how Beethoven in general ought to be played, or 3) is simply giving each symphony it's own identity (as he sees it). Those who love Haitink will presume the latter, and they might be right.
The Zinman cycle with Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is currently my favorite -- I love the lean, wiry energy and brisk but controlled tempi Zinman delivers on modern instruments with a small orchestra -- and at this point I find myself judging everything against it. I am also very fond of the late Gunter Wand's forthright readings with the NDR. At present, despite my newfound reservations, this Haitink cycle would probably be my third choice, a step or two ahead of Harnoncourt/COE. I also think this cycle would work out well for anyone who finds merit in both HIP and traditional approaches and just can't decide. This is a big orchestra sound energetically delivered with small orchestra transparency.
If you don't need SACD, this collection can be purchased as a set from a leading download site for less than a single SACD disc. Getting sleepy?
This latest Beethoven Symphonies cycle is not that great .......2007-02-13
I already have 2 sets of Beethoven symphonies cycle, Karajan, released 12/6/2005, and Gardiner, released September 20, 1994, and many other individuals. Then I pruchased this set because of reviews in Amazon here and nomination of Grammy 2007. After listening to some of them(No,3,5,9), I would say they are not that fantastic. The No.5 sounds strange in paticular comparing others. It seemed played in different pace from others. Then the overall recording quality is rather poor. "SACD" in here is somewhat misleading. The live recording is more challanging than in studio. But SFS still could achieve well balanced and refined recording in live. Its Mahler NO.7 won Grammy classical award this year. However, I dont know it was recorded in live or studio.
I like Beethoven No.9 very much, not this one though. Try Osmo Vanska, released 10/24/2006. Its excellent performance and SACD recording even surpasses the Karajan.

Product Description
"Many guitarists dabble in slide guitar, but the number of modern masters can probably be counted on one hand- Roy Rogers is surely one of them..."- Guitar Player Magazine. This Roy Rogers' first ever live CD. Drawing on inspiration and material from a career that spans decades of performing, Roy Rogers is considered one of the world1s leading parishioners of modern slide guitar. This is a Bandlink Enhanced CD which enables you to access new and exclusive Roy Rogers content- instant tour dates, news alerts, bonus music tracks, live video footage and direct chats with the Roy. Nominated for 8 Grammy1s for his production and performing work in the recording industry, Rogers1 has been immersed in the blues and roots scene and performing professionally since the ripe age of 13. This longtime Northern California resident picked up a nomination for the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in the Best Instrumentalist Guitar category last year for his release "Slideways" which hit #3 on the Blues Billboard chart. In addition, Rogers' recently co-wrote the song 3G1Nawin on It1 (on 'Silver Lining') with Bonnie Raitt which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category. Rogers is currently being featured on OSierra Center Stage1, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company-sponsored television series which seeks to bring exposure to underexposed American Roots and World musicians. The CD includes special guest performances by pianist Phil Aaberg, harmonica wizard Norton Buffalo, vocalist Shana Morrison and fiddler Tom Rigney. "I am first and foremost a performer and I have been playing with these players for a long time. It's great to lay it down and not have to bother with the added textures of studio polish- but keep it as gritty and fresh as possible. I also wanted to capture the band at this moment in time and I think we did that," adds Rogers.

Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

Customer Reviews:
One of the great live recordings.......2007-03-30
As mentioned in other reviews, the sound is not the best and they probably had more even performances. But I don't think that's the real point of the recording, or the spirit anyway. I think it's more accurate to say it captures the essence of the band instead of merely a performance.
The haphazard recording and playing just adds to the charm. I don't want polished and seemless from these guys, I want a high octane frat party. And this recording captures that in all its glory.
I never got to see the band live, Country Dick may well have been dead before I even discovered them and I see no indication they ever came this far east. But if you "get it", this is their ultimate recording. It's one of my favorites. When you get tired of polished corporate offerings, give this a try.
It is truly alternative, the way it was meant to be.
One of the best CD's I own.......2007-01-15
All I can really say is buy this CD, you will not be disappointed. The Beat Farmers at their best...LIVE. God bless you Country Dick, I miss you!!
Drink one for Country Dick..........2001-11-16
The Beat Farmers' studio releases never impressed me nearly as much as this raucous '89-'90 New Year's Eve live recording. Like many of the current crop of half-novelty/half-serious cowpunk bar bands (New Duncan Imperials come to mind), the Farmers lure you in with their ha-ha songs and bawdy reworkings of classic tunes. Country Dick's "Lucille" and "Happy Boy" may be the best-known tracks here, but over more listenings it's obvious that there's real substance in their more serious tracks.
"Socialite", "Riverside", and "Hollywood Hills" are as good as the folks whose songs they stomp into the ground (the Kinks, Neil Young). If there ever was a definitive "bar" sound, this would be it. Bad sound, loud guitars, drunken harmonies, and a screaming audience.
With 21 tracks and an appearance by Mojo Nixon ("King Of Sleaze") you just can't go wrong here. This here's a party record of the highest order...and I defy even the most ultra-serious Neil Young fan to hate the Farmers' version of "Roll Another Number" ("...in times like these you gotta know how to talk to the cops," says Dick at one point in his hilarious tirade).
Solid live album from a great band.......2001-09-04
Beat Farmers was a great and unique band. They were best in concert. This live album captures the band on stage in their home town San Diego, and it includes most of their best songs and the crazy performances of their drummer, late Country Dick Montana. Great fun.
if I was a carpenter..........2000-04-14
This here is the ultimate rock'n'roll 4/4 beat live record. Hubba hubba hubba indeed.

What a treasure!.......2007-07-08
As if "In The Red" wasn't good enough to begin with, this Special Edition 2-disk set includes a live concert AND two studio tracks left off the original album, which I think are better than anything that was ON the record. "When You're Away" really hit home for me, and "Lost In Art" is simply gorgeous. Tina's EP "Far" is still my favorite overall recording, but "Fuel", "Notes", and this edition of "In The Red" are close behind... I just hope she's involved with another Zero 7 project eventually. THAT would be heaven.

Good Stuff, but for Hardcore Berry Fans.......2006-10-28
Everybody who knows and loves rock and roll knows and loves the one and only Chuck Berry. This is an early 1970s live recording done during that unusual period when so many 50s rockers got a second wind and could command a large audience again. Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry were among the rockers capable of reinventing themselves onstage and attracting an excited live audience.
Playing to the west coast hippies, Chuck chose to play blues rather than rock guitar throughout most of this set. I love Chuck as much as anyone, and he's a surprisingly smooth crooner on slow blues tunes. But as a bluesman, he's no Buddy Guy or B.B. King. If you're expecting a collection of superior blues performances or a series of classic blues tunes rocked-up in suitable rockabilly style you will be disappointed.
On the other hand, I am one of the few here who enjoyed Chuck's versions of "My Ding-a-Ling" and "Reelin and Rockin'" but then again I've seen Chuck live and I've always got a kick out of those songs. Throughout, the Steve Miller Band gives Chuck Berry an excellent support and keep this disc on a consistently professional level.
So, if you love Chuck Berry, you'll buy this CD like I did. If you're not a diehard Berry fan, however, you'd better stick with his Greatest Hits.
NOT ONLY THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL, BUT A BLUES MASTER TOO!.......2003-11-17
A great live release by Chuck Berry. Sadly, this CD went largely unnoticed. If you are looking for HAIL, HAIL ROCK 'N'ROLL it is not here (just a little bit). This is Chuck at his greasy blues best! Not only is he in killer blues form here, he proves he can ice the blues cake with the best of them. Just check out "Everyday I Have The Blues" & Driftin' Blues". You'll be in BERRY orbit! Steve Miller guests on "It Hurts Me Too". A must for any Berry fan! A+
The King Live.......2002-09-15
I was a tad dissapointed with LIVE AT FILLMORE AUDITORIUM, because I've never been very interested in Berry's slow stuff and there's nearly wall-to-wall true blues on the LP.
On the other hand, it's Chuck Berry, and he IS the king of Rock'n'Roll, so how bad could it possibly be?
When I saw Berry in concert about 15 years ago, he was still doing shows like he'd done for a couple of decades: pickup bands, or just one step better than that, everything in A, and make up the playlist as you go. The band here is Steve Miller's, there is the occasional tune in B or G, and the playlist is surprisingly berift of the better known Berry songs. He focuses instead on slow blues and a couple of drifting jam sessions.
But I could listen to Berry play his wandering leads on that red hollow body all day long. He's occasionally sloppy, but so was Jimmy Page and I liked his stuff too.
A word of warning: the versions of "Reelin' And Rockin'" and "My Ding-A-Ling" are NOT the hit versions. "Reelin' and Rockin'" chugs along just fine; "My Ding-A-Ling" isn't as good as the hit single, which was recorded in the UK...and a lot of people didn't think the hit was too great to begin with. "Johnny B. Goode" is thE disapointment of the album, starting as a slow dirge before shifting into a franticly uptempo mess.
On the bluesy side.......2001-08-23
Great Chuck Berry & co. performances of his songs and covers. It's on the bluesy side, for the most part, but that's okay with me because they are all played so well. Throw this one on the player and relax.
Chuck Berry Live at Fillmore.......2001-04-21
This is an incredible CD. My opinion is some what biased in that this was first concert where I heard Chuck Berry live. Berry rocked, the Fillmore rocked and this CD rocks! Listening to this make me recall even the smell of the auditorium. At the time, we had no idea it was being recorded. If you like rock, if you like blues you will like this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

deja vu live.......2005-10-01
I've always liked the sound of the band backing up Crosby and Nash in the seventees. David Lindleys slideguitar is always there. Good drumming by Russell Kunkel and also Craig Doerge piano and synthplaying is of great importance of the sound of the band. Maybe this band is the reason why in 1977 they (C+N) still function very good. At this point in time it's already an accomplishment that there were two of them (C+N)on stage.
The album is a real live album. You can hear some things are a bit rough compared to the studio-albums. The recording quality is not so good. But there are just a few bands that often visit studio's that have made live-albums work. Being there is most of the time better, probably because there's to much noise going on on a popstage to hear what's going wrong.
Here you can hear a band that can really play: not just loud, but subtle too. The choise of the songs will only be original for the younger listener, who only buy the threesomes or foursomes of CSNY. Because I was about 5 years old when the album came out, the album, for me, has something more to offer. It gives an insight of the livesound of Crosby and Nash at that time and it (together with the CN studio-albums) helps understand why the album CSN is so good. At that time they were still busy making good music. And the new songs they were making (not present on this album) were still great to. The whole musical approach was. And that you can hear on this album. One listen to the version of deja vu can prove that.
Decent.......2003-04-09
Not bad...Considering David was based out of his brain and had
to keep taking breaks to hit the pipe.Probably the sweetest Lee
Shore they've pulled off. There's a couple weak tracks but enough
good ones to balance it out.If you're a true fan you'll like it.
Foolish Man and Page 43 shine as well and also a good Dejavu
Fooled again..........2002-12-10
This title would have probably been better left in the vaults. Not one of the better live performances by this duo.
cd live.......2002-07-19
very good cd am listening to it right now! is a good classic cd from an excellent band!
Really great.......2000-02-25
These guys were absolutely NOT the lighter 2/4s of CSNY that the press kept painting them as during their salad days. Crosby and Nash's first live album is a terrific showcase of everything that made them a great concert draw apart from the mothership during the Seventies. "Immigration Man" fairly leaps out at you from the opening note, "Foolish Man" has Crosby doing some of his most soulful wailing, and the ace musicians backing the duo up (Russ Kunkel on drums, Craig Doerge on keyboards, among others) give a muscle and heft to "The Lee Shore" and "Deja Vu" that is thrilling to hear. Both men are in fine voice throughout and sound like their having a great time. This not only brings back a lot of memories, it stands up quite well without the nostalgia factor as a solid live document of two master musicians at their peak.

Ours is not to wonder why..........2006-11-28
There must be a story behind this 2003 Laura Nyro recording, because its place in the artists catalog is almost non-existant. One year previous to these selections hitting the shelves, the Rounder label released a two disc compendium of Laura solo and with her harmony group in 1993 and 1994, a collection that far outshines the limited production tendered here. And unless there was something wrong with other songs performed for this reserved Japanese audience, one also wonders why only ten tracks, totalling less than thirty minutes, are offered. As far as I can tell there are only two significant differences between this Laura-solo-live and the four other Laura-solo-live releases ('At the Bottom Line', 'On Mountain Stage', 'At the Fillmore' and the two disc 'Loom's Desire'): we have a complete version of Laura covering Burt Bacharach and Hal David's 'Walk On By' (a track available, incidentally, as part of a medley in the 1971 Fillmore East concert), and the rather staid response of the Japanese audience to Laura's work (with the exception of 'Wedding Bell Blues', which elicits immediate applause followed up with a clap-along). So if you're looking for "cleaner" versions of some of Laura's better known tracks, 'Live In Japan' may be the ticket, but none of Laura's audiences will ever get a reputation for being rowdy anyway.
With that cavaet, let me say that the ten songs collected here are very well recorded and very well performed. The first six songs represent some of the finest compositions of the 1960's, among them the opener, 'Dedicated To the One I Love'. Although covered by artists such as The Shirelles and The Mama's and the Papa's, and despite it's engaging melody, don't assume this is a Laura original. The track was penned by Ralph Bass and Lowman Pauling. The second number, 'Ooh Baby Baby' was written by Smokey Robinson, and 'Let It Be Me' (covered by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan and David Hasselhoff) is originally a French song from the 1950's. The three remaining tracks, representing nearly one-third of the setlist (and more than one-third of the total running time), give undue weight to Laura'a late-career productions. Conspicuously absent are selections from Laura's mid-career releases, 'Smile', 'Nested', and 'Mother's Spiritual', the latter two of which appear to be quagmired in legal limbo. Live releases could serve as a way to reintroduce some of this material, but that apparently wasn't a motivation in releasing this disc either. The last three tracks, all of which appear on 'The Loom's Desire', carry considerable political and philosophical weight, favoring women's and animal's rights, and so carry on Laura's favored crusades in her absence.
Aside from the brevity of the recording, and the lack of original material, the most obvious deficiency is the inability of the recording to pick up steam. Be prepared for a beautiful performance, but one that only comes close to bringing you out of your seat (to join our Japanese brethren in support of 'Wedding Bell Blues'). Five numbers are offered with Laura's three member harmony group (tracks one, four, five, nine, and ten), and while those perfomances are richer, they aren't necessarily more scintillating. In fact, the tracks that have some potential for establishing a burning presence, 'And When I Die' (which can be found on three of Laura's four solo-live recordings) and 'Save the Country' (a rare late-career performance) are offered in a subdued format.
If not for 'The Loom's Desire', 'Live In Japan' would help to fill a void in the Nyro catalog, but much of this has been done too many times before to consider the release anything but superfluous. If you're a rabid Laura Nyro fan who must have each and every recording the artist ever produced, then I suppose you'll have to run out and purchase this one. For the more casual fan, unless you absolutely must have that rare, quaint performance of 'Walk On By', ante up a few more George Washington's and cash in on the well-constructed, and well-anotated 'Loom's Desire'. The difference is fulfillment as opposed to wanting more. You can't argue against this one on its merits, but you can argue against it on what has come before. It merits four stars, based on Laura's irrepressible talent, but the fact is you can do better... far too easily.
This Title Is Actually Called "Live In Japan".......2003-05-30
That discrepancy aside, I've heard the whole concert from which this very affordable half-hour distillation is taken from, and these are indeed the best performances from that show. A great value for the buck and the opportunity to hear Laura at the piano alone and, on occasion, with three fine harmony vocalists. Gorgeous.

The best live Haggard you'll find........2004-08-26
This is a great live album, albeit a short one, and the renditions of "Running Kind/Lonesome Fugitive," "Back to the Barrooms," and "Sing Me Back Home" are the best you'll find anywhere. This is real deal country, not the garbage the CMA promotes today, and the cd is a joy to listen to. Recorded when Haggard was at the top of his game, this is one of his rowdiest and more energetic collections of songs. Highly recommended for those new to Haggard. Grab it before it's out of circulation.
