Best known in North America for his work with Jan Garbarek and Charles Lloyd, pianist Bobo Stenson has a conception deeply rooted in the stream of lyrical pianists that includes Bill Evans, Paul Bley, and Keith Jarrett. Their varied trio philosophies, too, have certainly shaped the three-way inventions that Stenson develops with his long-standing partners, bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Christensen. That established, though, no one is likely to mistake Stenson for anyone else. There's a genuinely Nordic quality to his music, from the open intervals of his native Sweden's folk songs (the kind taken up by visiting jazz musicians like Stan Getz and Art Farmer) to a particular sense of light that suffuses the trio's music.

There's an acuteness of listening here--to the overtones of piano, cymbals, and bass--that savors the barely articulated as well as the overt. The music has range--from Cuban Silvio Rodriguez's "El Mayor" to Alban Berg's "Die Nachtigall," from angular collective improvisations to Wayne Shorter's "Swee' Pea" and pieces by Charles Ives and Hanns Eisler--but it also has depth, the two CDs of Serenity emphasizing that very quality in Stenson's music. The reflective moods here touch on the somber and the unresolved, as well as the wistful and the joyous, the group folding them into a welling sonic beauty. It's piano trio music of the highest order. --Stuart Broomer

Album Description

Joss Whedon, the writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, "Serenity."

The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family--squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers--a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister --he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself. This action/adventure/Sci-Fi/western features an eclectic score by composer David Newman.

5 out of 5 stars Serenity CD.......2007-05-13

What can I say? One of the best Sci Fi series to come out in a long time. A keeper here.

3 out of 5 stars good but missing..........2007-04-11

I enjoy the CD but there's some specific music missing. In the track for the closing credits there's some acoustic guitar that's on the DVD but not on the CD.

Otherwise a good listen if you're into movie soundtracks.

4 out of 5 stars Great recording.......2007-04-11

The soundtrack is a really nice piece of work, especially for fans of Firefly and Serenity. Though most of the tracks featured come from the second, more action-packed half of the movie, the signature orchestral work and themes are really well captured. Unlike a lot of other movie soundtracks, it's not that hard to picture exactly what point in the story each selection was featured in and remember the specific emotional tones it was trying to convey. Overall a great album!

4 out of 5 stars Serenity is serene.......2007-03-26

I thought the soundtrack was good. It had a good vibe. Really good combination of instruments in the music. The CD went through the movie and did the songs for each part of the movie. But, I wish it would have had more of the complete songs, some of them were not complete. But it's a good CD, I listen to it often.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best (and most overlooked) Films of 2005.......2007-03-17

Slightly different in tone and details from the Series Firefly, on which it was based. This in no way deters from the film, and makes it accessible to both new viewers and fans of the Series, a ground breaking, genre-busting program that was cut down before it could begin (Curse you, FOX!). This film, Serenity, has it all: Action, Adventure, Mystery, Drama, Comedy... Science Fiction meets The Western meets Fim Noir. A MUST see!

Album Description

Liquid Mind V: Serenity is a peaceful and soothing musical journey, designed to help you relax deeply, during meditation, massage, yoga, rest, or in times of stress, and is a wonderful background for massage, meditation, healing, yoga, pilates, reiki, shiatsu, t'ai chi or reflexology.

The tranquil flow of the music, and the absence of regular rhythm allows the listener to experience a level of relaxation not achievable by more active music. The fifth in Liquid Mind's elegant electronic series of slow relaxation music albums takes the listener to a place of deep calm and tranquility. This gentle album is used by people to relieve stress, by parents to help quiet hyperactive children, by insomniacs to assist themselves in going back to sleep in the middle of a difficult night, and by just about anyone to relieve the stress of a busy day at work.

5 out of 5 stars And Serenity it gives.......2007-06-27

This album is one among many from Liquid Mind. The music and sounds are incredibly subtle in background as they create a foundation upon which one can focus for meditations and healing. The chords and instrumentation are soothing, joyful, and flowing. This music is just the type of "white noise" necessary to create a peaceful atmosphere in which to enhance medidating and/or doing spiritual work of any kind.

5 out of 5 stars Can you say ahhhhhhhhh..........2007-04-17

I have had this album for a while now and find it one of the bset for getting off this bumpy ride we are all on called life. It is also wonderful for massage. My massage therapist loves it too. If you love warm and fuzzy places, this album will help get you there.

5 out of 5 stars Liquid Mind V: Serenity.......2007-03-20

Another great CD from the talents of Chuck Wild. Be it for relaxation,
meditaion or setting a mood, the collection of Liquid Mind is truely worth a listen. No matter what your pleasure, you'll find something to love. Very sensual and at times erotic. A true believer must have this one. The music is unbelieveably soothing and will take you on a journey to inner piece. Chuck is a talented man who knows how to make magic with electronic music.

5 out of 5 stars Calming Peace.......2006-11-03

I take care of children all day, and so I begin each day with my cup of tea and this or one of the Liquid Mind CDs. It calms me and my thoughts and helps me get in touch with my inner spirit. It's a great way to begin the day! I also play this during the day while the children are here. It helps calm children, and provides a peaceful atmosphere.

2 out of 5 stars UNHAPPY LISTENER.......2006-08-07

When I purchasesd this CD judging from the cover and name: Liquid Mind V:Serenity, I thought I would be getting a relaxing collection of music, probably suitable for an infant to hear. What a mistake I made! This CD was totally disappointing. There really were no 'songs', and what sounds were emitted were barren and not pleasing to the ear.

5 out of 5 stars Complex serenity.......1999-02-03

David and Steve Gordon have converged the art of creativity, e.g. musical spirit, with Nature's sounds of life in this phenomenally peaceful collection of sound. Their skill has remained colorfully competent, bringing the listener into the cool forest of notes, gurgles and chirps. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must for those who crave "environmental music"........1999-01-08

I bought the cassette tape verison of this work several years ago. I wanted to have some background music for at home activities such as: drawing, reading, and meditation.

I own about 30 other CDs and tapes of this kind of music. Misty Forest Morning is by far the best of the lot.

This very calming mix of flute, guitar, and water sounds will propel you instantly into a theta state.

Don't leave your body without it!

If it hadn't been for keyboardist Steve Halpern, the New Age genre may never have been born. His 1975 release, Spectrum Suite, marked the debut of a music whose compositional structure was free and intended for relaxation. Halpern built an entire career around this concept and thanks to his serenely inspired tinkling, along with the genre it spawned, thousands of listeners have found a musical way to unwind and heal from the stresses of life. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Halpern's Serenity Suite, a 1999 release that marries the sounds of tweeting birds and mountain streams with a gentle piano and warm electric keyboards. It's like a soundtrack to a camping trip, or rather, it captures the quiet contentment you experience when camping. Select tracks include airy flute, harp, and violin, which flow effortlessly within Halpern's pleasant atmosphere like stream water over mossy rocks. This album isn't for those who crinkle their nose at New Age music, but it certainly is for those interested in achieving serenity. --Karen K. Hugg

I bought this album on vinyl more years ago than I care to remember. These are all great tunes, improved by Coulter's instrumentation and production. Lovely.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2006-03-31

Played for the first time after a heavy snow while following a stream on a tree shrouded country road. Will never forget that soul soothing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Touchingly superb.......2004-03-20

Coulter's music immediately spoke to me, and 'Serenity' is the 3-generation favorite of the Coulter CDs I own (with 5 more on order). Our tastes differ, but 'Meditation' sooths me, 'The Bells of Angelus' readily moves me to a different realm, and 'Bring Flowers of the Fairest' is an elderly aunt's top pick. The youngest generation is as quick to play this CD as they are to select rock, ballads or their other favorite music. Coulter is a past, present and future artist who creatively crosses boundaries with music and spirit. Try to tire of this selection. I'm betting you cannot. While awaiting arrival of the new CDs, 'Any Dream Will Do.'

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful relaxing music.......2003-05-31

This is one of my favorites! I bought the cassette after hearing it in a small shop in Gatlinburg, TN. The music was simply so relaxing and peaceful. Later I bought the CD so I could have a copy for home and car. During a hectic day when I have too much housework to do, I put in the CD and allow the music to wash away some of the stress.

5 out of 5 stars Late-Career Showcase for the Mighty Tenor.......2007-04-18

I considered giving this a "mere" 4 stars, because in some respects it's a fairly typical middle-of-the-road outing. However, the outstanding audio quality of this live recording--especially how well it captures the unique, gorgeous sound of Getz's tenor sax--nudged me to the higher rating. I own 7 Getz CDs and they're all quite enjoyable, but this one, an early (1987) digital recording, SOUNDS best--probably by a substantial margin.

The other 3 musicians do good work throughout: Kenny Barron complements Getz beautifully and has quite a bit of nice solo space; Rufus Reid's bass is prominent in the mix and also heard in some fine solos; and drumming by Victor Lewis fits in well. But clearly Stan Getz is the star--and he shines ever so brightly here, at age 60, with but a few short years remaining. This is very accessible modern jazz that you can safely play for just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Stan.......2006-01-01

This is a review that I write with extreme pleasure because it's about a couple of discs that I really love since they came out in 1991. I'm talking about "Serenity" and "Anniversary" which are two albums that were recorded both July the 6th 1987 at Cafè Montmartre in Copenhagen. I remember that I heard that Stan already know to be at the end. He gave all that he still had inside here, he played here some of the best music of his life. No doubt. His sound was better than ever, his phrasing absolutly magnificient, unequalled. He was accompanied here by a very talented band, Kenny Barron piano, Victor Lewis drums and Rufus Reid double bass. They swang here as it was the most natural thing to do on Earth. The program is based on standards and it is exceptionally well balanced. It is even a very nice live recording, I may called it almost a "reference" album because it is very natural sounding. I mean, if you want some truly stellar Jazz, some truly stellar ballads and swinger standards, a master at the top of his game ... well let's begin buying these two discs from the immortal Stan getz. Some of the best music he played in his illustrious 5 decades career. You won't regret a single cent spent here. It's some of the best music I have ever listen to in more than twenty years of jazz. Buy both the albums and get the full picture of an heavenly Stan Getz. Maybe you can buy "People time" too. It's a recording that was made in this same period, a double cd set based on Stan and Kenny Barron duets. Fantastic. Believe me.

5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL SWAN SONG.......2005-04-09

This is quite possibly the most beautiful tenor playing I've ever heard. Getz was never known by his compatriots in jazz for having an abundance of licks in his repertoire. What he WAS respected for was his tone and beauty. SERENITY is a perfect example of that. This LIVE session was recorded in '87 just a few years before Stan's death in '91 and contains part of a beautiful swan song from one of the greatest Masters of West Coast Cool who ever lived. Most of his fans prefer the ANNIVERSARY set from these sessions. To me there was something extraordinary that happened on this night that makes me wish he had never left the stage or us. Every time I put it on I'm overwhelmed by it's smokin' beauty.

Stan said, "I believe you should try to make music as beautiful as you can. It should not be done with ugliness. There's so much hate in the world; you have to counteract it with lovliness."

When I remarked to a friend about this being, maybe the greatest jazz recording I own (and I own a lot of jazz), my friend said, "In all the years I've been going to the Playboy Jazz Festival, Stan Getz is the finest musician I've ever heard play at the Hollywood Bowl." That's a bold statement.

Kenny Barron on piano is the perfect compliment to Stan's gorgeous playing on this.

To say that Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums were on fire that night would be an understatement.

TO HONOR THIS RECORDING PLAY IT THROUGH INFINITY SPEAKERS AT A HIGH VOLUME. (Infinity speakers have the warmest sound I've ever heard for jazz playback.) I HOPE THIS BECOMES ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES TOO.

If you like Late-model Getz go out and get ANNIVERSARY, BLUE SKYS, and PEOPLE TIME. Or if you're on a tight budget buy CAFE MONTMARTRE. It contains ballad selections from SERENITY, ANNIVERSARY, and PEOPLE TIME. IF ONE OF THESE DOESN'T MAKE IT INTO YOUR TOP TEN JAZZ CDS OF ALL TIME, IT'S TIME TO SEE A DOCTOR. SOMETHING MIGHT BE WRONG WITH YOUR HEARING.

ENJOY.

3 out of 5 stars upbeat part of the Anniversary set.......2000-04-28

"Serenity" is the mostly upbeat, cheerful, bebop & swing part of the classic "Anniverary" set. (a somewhat odd title choice considering...).

Sparkling, exuberent performances by all involved. Muscular bass lines, piano integrates perfectly with Getz direction. Perfect play by sidemen including Barron, who is best piano man Getz ever had, with the possble exception of Al Haig in the '50's. Great recording quality. Stan had been considered pretty much washed up after a decade of Fusion misadventures and much drugs and disease in the 70's . The 80's was his great come-back (see my Anniversary review) and arguably the best music of his life. Best song is the ballad "Falling in Love" which shimmers and sparkles like a diamond. Getz sails onto "Green Dolphin Street". "Voyage" is a Kenny Barron original that is now a jazz standard, one of his best known pieces.

Stan never sounds angry, on this or any other album. And he always maintains perfect control of his sax.

Gets 4-5 stars for a great performance. (I'd like to give this album more stars, if I knew how).

"Anniversary" gets a slight edge because it contains the songs I prefer, but any Stan Getz fan will want them both! For more great Getz see my list on this page.

Getz mellifluous music remains the antidote to a world of stress. "We'd ALL like to sound like Stan Getz,... if we could" - John Coltrane.

Recorded live at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen on July 6, 1987, this CD conveys the spontaneity that one can really only find in a live performance. This is good Getz, with the other memebers of the quartet contributing good support and good solo work.

5 out of 5 stars Kataklysm can kick all other metal bands butts.......2007-03-21

There is not really another band out there that I can compare Kataklysm to. Very fast, but not to the point where it doesn't sound like music. Same with the drums, very fast but not to the point that it sounds like a bunch of marbles falling on a drum. A must check out for any metal head. Best song in my opinion is "Blood on the Swans".

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best to offer.......2006-08-08

In one word this album is sick! I played this album to some friends who had once abandoned these guys. They quickly perked up to the searing riffs, killer drum beats and demonic vocals of this "diamond in the rough" death metal band. This album made me truly appreciate what is good in the dark genre. All the songs in this CD make for a grand tour de force of brutality. The self titled "Serenity in Fire" remains my personal favorite. A tour through the pits of oblivion should not be complete without this album playing in the background!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brutal and In Your Face!!.......2006-06-28

I recently got into Kataklysm over a month ago when I bought "Serenity in Fire", and I have to say, this is some of the most brutal and in your face death metal I've heard in my life. This album just crushes and destroys absolutely everything in it's path. The musicianship on here is absolutely awesome. Brutal vocals, angry guitars, and ohhhh man those sick insane machine-gun-like drums. Maurizio Iacono's vocals are very awesome ranging from brutal growls to frightening screams. Guitarist J-F Daginais shreds and tears throughout with angry crushing riffs that rips through your bones like a buzzsaw. Stephane Barbe has some good bass lines you can hear as well. Drummer Martin Maurais absolutely slaughters on this album. His machine-gun-like double bass drumming is absolutely sick and insane. If you don't believe me, just listen to the drum solo on track seven "Blood on the Swans". It will have you feeling like you've been hit by a semi truck, just totally awesome!! Other standouts include "The Ambassador of Pain", "For All Our Sins" (which features guest vocals by Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy), "10 Seconds From The End", "The Resurrected", "Serenity in Fire", and "Under the Bleeding Sun".
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. The Ambassador of Pain - Great opener. 5/5
2. The Resurrected - 5/5
3. As I Slither - 5/5
4. For All Our Sins - 5/5
5. The Night They Returned - 5/5
6. Serenity in Fire - 5/5
7. Blood on the Swans - Love that drum solo in the begining. 5/5
8. 10 Seconds From The End - 5/5
9. The Tragedy I Preach - 5/5
10. Under the Bleeding Sun - Great closer, has a nice guitar solo BTW. 5/5

Overall highly recommended for fans of Vader, Deicide, Cryptopsy, Nile, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation or even Hypocrisy, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquility for that mattter. Kataklysm are without a doubt the TRUE voices of metal. Bottom Line: Buy this album now.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10!!.......2005-12-19

5 out of 5 stars they definitely live up to their name!.......2005-05-20

Kataklysm's Serenity In Fire is definitely poised to set the metal world on fire. every song on this album is perfectly executed and they play like they mean it! standout tracks? the whole album is standout. as for Fred Durst's Numba One Fann, this is real metal, not that stupid a** Limp Bizkit you keep touting as number one! face it! Limp Bizkit sucks!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Rather somber.......2006-04-15

Eggar's music is slow and somber. Either the piano or the recording resonates in a way that causes the piano to lack clarity and crispness. All the tunes left me feeling like a dark rainy day after some tradgedy. The slow tempo and sustained tones dying out to silence cause me to jump at the next chord. In contrast I find Michael Jones to be soothing - it keeps my interest constant and when I'm focused on the music I can forget other things and relax.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding service........2005-09-15

5 out of 5 stars a great musician.......2003-05-09

I first heard Dave on the DMX channel called sounscapes. I was lying on the couch reading and this beautiful sound grabbbed my attention,it sent chills thru my body and stole all my emotions and almost left me lifeless. That sound was Dave Eggar. A wonderful talented pianist. Serenity has 13 heart clutching songs that could possibly bring you to tears.

5 out of 5 stars Serenity now.......2002-05-20

This CD is amazing--it creates such a powerful mood--I've listened to it many many times-and each time it takes me on a deeper emotional journey--it's great.
