Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
After their 1997 debut, Steppin' Out, the Braxton Brothers decided to take their act on the road. Little did they know that their travels would be the inspiration for their second album, Now & Forever. "Playing live, you realize that the music is much bigger than just two people playing instruments," says bassist Nelson. "Aside from having the most fun we have ever had playing music, we've seen the power and connection our grooves and melodies have." Saxophonist Wayne adds, "One of the things we've learned from live performance is the way a rapport with an audience can give the music on an album a whole new attitude. While melody is always the big thing, live we see how the melody connects in deeper ways. We have done our best to bring the fun, lighthearted feelings of our live performances to the new music."

Putrid.......2007-06-21
I think this series perpetuates bad music. Observe- If I were in a band, and we somehow got famous, I would be livid if my music somehow wound up on this or on Kidz Bop. Therefore, Musicians (who care about music and fanbase rather than money and sales) are inadvertantly discouraged to make music that sells!
Of course, this is not exactly the case, but I would make sure my record contract included a clause to keep me off of these albums, if that's possible
1,2,3...22,23,24!.......2007-06-15
It's not the first CD, but the 24th! Now 24 has all of the recent "chart-topping hits"!
The first song is "Fergalicious" from Fergie. I would much rather just skip over that. Then it's Rihanna featuring Sean Paul with "Break it Off". Anyone who loves listening to them separately loves listening to them together. Next, "Say it Right" by Nelly Furtado, a slower song that is forgetable. Singing "Irreplaceable", Beyonce has hit the charts once again. A somewhat slow but catchy song is okay for me. Number five is "My Love" by Justin Timberlake. Again, I would much rather just skip over that. Akon appears with Snoop Dog singing "I Wanna Love You". This song was a very popular song, but gets a little old after a while. Bow Wow, Chris Brown, and Johnta Austin sing "Shortie Like Mine". This song is a very interesting song to listen to. Llyod and Lil Wayne with "You" is just another song. Two thumbs down for me. Song number nine is "Promise". Ciara has also hit the charts, but I don't treasure this song. Omarion appears with "Ice Box". I would definitely skip over that song. Chris Brown reappears singing "Say Goodbye" on track eleven. If you like that style of music, then you might enjoy this song. Corinne Bailey Rae sings "Put Your Records On". A slower song, but does speed up and slow down throughout the song. It could grow on you, though. Lily Allen with "Smile" appears on track thirteen. Knowing whom Lily Allen is and listening to her all of the time, is interesting to know that she made it on the charts (and on this CD) for being a fairly new artist. "Suyddenly I See" by KT Tunstall is a unique song that really stands out on this CD. I love listening to "Here (in Your Arms)" by Hellogoodbye. It is somewhat slow, but is very different. Track number sixteen is "Face Down" by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. This song has a short story beneath the music; I love it! With constantly listening to The Fray, it doesn't surprise me that "How To Save A Life" is on the CD. A very sad and slow song is also amazing at the same time. Another sad but amazing song "If Everyone Cared" by Nickelback, which is absolutely amazing. Song after song, Nickelback is always perfecting them to once again hit the charts. On season five of American Idol, Chris Daughtry sings "It's Not Over" which amazes the "crowd" once again! The All-American Rejects appear on track twenty to end with "It Ends Tonight". It fits in perfectly with the sad and slower songs.
If you enjoy pop music, (or even rock or hip-hop), you would definitely enjoy this CD.
Excellent CD!!!!!.......2007-05-15
If you really need to be updated with the recent hits all around the USA, so you MUST buy this CD: it is an excellent compilation of all kinds of genres: rap, r&b, dance, rock and country. I missed only the hit THAT'S WHY I'M HOT by MISM. I hope it will be included on the next CD Now 25...
Aceptable.......2007-05-13
Es aceptable, aunque no todos los temas son muy buenos. De todos modos, hay que elegir solo lo que a uno le gusta.

A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. --Sam Sutherland

Alison Krauss.......2007-05-12
In this album, it has my favoriate song: When You Say Nothing At All. Alison Krauss's voice is so sweet and natural. When you hear her songs, you can feel relaxing and fresh from her voice. Good choice.
Definitive collection...one of her best!.......2007-04-12
This is a terrific album by Alison Krauss. A nice selection of songs that display her full range of vocal abilities and styles. If you are a new fan and wondering which album to buy, this is the one. If you are going on a trip and wondering which Alison Krauss album to take along, this is the one. This is the album that everyone loves, even those who don't love bluegrass or country. You won't be sorry you made this purchase.

Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.
Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.
"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."
Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."
With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.
Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08
Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!
Very soothing.......2007-05-14
Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.
very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13
the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.
Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20
Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

Growing as an Artist.......2007-07-10
I was very pleased with most of the songs on this CD. I really enjoyed Colour of Silence and as well as this one. I don't know why artists like Tiffany or Debbie (Deborah) Gibson get ragged on by people when you have artists like Brittany, Ashlee Simpson (so many others to name) that don't have a quality voice like Tiffany or D Gibson. Tiffany's music today is so much better than the calculated music she made in the 1980s. More Personnal. If you have been a long time fan I recommend it. If you like Alanis "Jagged Little Pill" CD I recommend "Just Me" and "Colour of Silence" by Tiffany.
Tiffany Comes Back and Really Lays Out A Musical Collection!.......2007-06-28
All of the songs on this CD are very well written
These are my favorite songs:
Winter's Over
Just Me
Feels Like Love
Streets Of Gold
Hiding Behind The Face is a pretty good song, as well as Calling Out Your Name. Mind Candy is a fun song to hear Tiffany sing. And, of course, I Will Not Breakdown from her CD Color Of Silence (2000) is good to hear once again.
My least favorites are:
Be Alright
This Love
Anyone But Me
Overall, this CD is amazing! I have always loved Tiffany's music. This is yet another impressive and well-written CD and I hope that Tiffany continues writing songs and selling records in the future.
Hold An Old Friends Hand.......2007-06-25
Tiffany strays away from the all dance sound that she did so well in 2005 with `Dust Off And Dance' and gets back to the singer-songwriter sound of her best yet CD (in my opinion) of 2000's `The Color Of Silence' without missing a beat. Tiffs voice is in superb form and the music/lyrics is as catchy as when she first came out 20+ years ago minus the cheesiness.
Her leadoff single is "Feels Like Love" which is a pretty simplistic melody but with Tiffany's voice she breathes such life into the song. You will be humming and singing it in no time.
Every song just falls into place on this set offering a different glimpse into Tiffany's life right now. Each song offers something different and the lyrics are raw and the hooks are very melodic and radio friendly at the same time. For such an underrated artist Tiffany just keeps coming out with CD after CD and pleases her fans everywhere. `Just Me' is no exception to that rule - it's a very personal CD with a lot of emotion in every song.
Check these out:
"Just Me"
"Hiding Behind the Face"
"Mind Candy" - more of a rock edge to it. A really great song.
"Winter's Over" - genius
A great CD from start to finish. I highly recommend it!!
A terrific pop/rock CD! Tiffany keeps getting better and better!.......2007-06-11
Tiffany's 2001 album "Color of Silence" is a masterpiece; that album proved that Tiffany was more than a teeny-boppin' has-been. This lady has potential as a prominent rock singer. Next came her spirited, terrific dance album "Dust Off and Dance". Another first-rate effort. And now Tiffany arrived with her third big-time winner in a row! "Just Me" is filled with sophisticated, lively, awesomely produced pop-rock music. Seven of the songs were co-written by Tiffany, and man on man! She and her writing partners sure can write a great hook and amazing lyrics!
The album's single "Feels Like Love" is a rather misleading track. It's kind of light and fluffy, more along the lines of what people who are familiar with Tiffany's '80s albums would expect. But the album gets more complex from there. Sure, there are love songs. But there are also songs filled with self-examination -- and there's even a highly moving song about homelessness.
The song "Just Me" is nothing short of an anthem. I hum along to it, and I feel better about myself. It's just very uplifting. Most of these songs are. I am also a huge fan of the songs "Hiding Behind The Face" and "Calling Out Your name" -- great rock and roll. But all the songs here are gems. Not a stinker in the bunch. And to the reviewer who did not like "Anyone But Me", are you serious? That is a kickass track!! And it has a powerful message!
All in all, this is a thoroughly satisfying musical experience. I expected it to be good, but I was not prepared for how delicious a collection this is. I recommend this, even to people who are not familiar with Tiffany's other recent work. Oh, and buy "Color of Silence" if you don't have it. That is Tiffany's best album. But this one is a close second!
TIFFANY TIFFANY THE QUEEN.......2007-06-10
YOUR VOCALS ARE PROBABLY THE BEST OF MANY FEMALE SINGERS. DEFINITELY BETTER THAN BRITNEY AND CHRISTINA.
TIFF IS UNDERRATED BECAUSE SHE IS THE TEEN MALL QUEEN, BUT HER VOICE HAS EVOLVED IN EACH ALBUM SHE HAS RELEASED. I LOVE THIS BETTER THAN HER DEBUT
ALBUM...HER VOICE IS PHENOMENAL...

Features both U.S. and U.K. main title themes and includes exclusive liner notes.
Customer Reviews:
Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07
If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.
Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11
Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!
Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11
If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!
BSG.......2007-04-10
Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.
Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28
There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

To be clear: America hasn't flooded the market with another best-of album. Instead, two of the founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, were rescued from classic rock purgatory by the Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger with an offer from the younger musicians to act as producers on an album of new material. The respect that Iha and Schlesinger have shown for America's talents is touching, drawing the best out of the band's close harmonies and gentle folk rock sound. Over the decades, Beckley and Bunnell have lost none of their vocal compatibility or their guitar acumen. If anything, they're much better players in 2007 than they were when they first rode into pop music history on their "Horse with No Name." Here & Now is further enhanced by guests like Ryan Adams (on "Ride On"), as well as Ben Kweller pairing up with My Morning Jacket members Jim James and Patrick Hallahan for a cover of Jacket's "Golden." Meanwhile, Nada Surf members play back up on a heart-stopping version of their own "Always Love." Also included is a live disc recorded in 2005, which finds America covering their chart-topping hits with a deft, subtle hand, reminding us that this group could hold its own with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Eagles, and other early '70s contemporaries. --Jaan Uhelszki

Anemic.......2007-06-08
You got to hand it to these guys for their persistance. I saw them in concert last year - A++++ really a good show, very professional. Unlike the concert, the new music is anemic. I listened to the CD over and over and the songs seem to belend in together - nothing stands out. Maybe they need to get Dan Peek to help write some songs, the magic was the 3 of them.
A Surprising Great Collection of Songs!.......2007-05-30
This is a two CD release - one contains all their old hits from a live performance while the second contains a collection of new studio recorded songs. I can't say I care for the live recordings - the originals always sound better to me. However, the new songs are amazingly good! This is their best work to date (and I always felt their initial "America" album was ground-breaking for the incredible instrumentals woven into well written songs). It is great to see quality composers who get better with age instead of washed up as is too often the case. I cannot remember when I have been so impressed with a new album release - and I have been around for a while.
The Rise and Rise of America.......2007-05-27
At first I was tempted to title this review, "the Rise and Fall and Rise Again of America", but the fact is that America has never really fallen. Despite not have a hit record since the early 1980's, America (Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley), has been performing 150 plus dates a year since they were formed in 1967. Although, original member, Dan Peek, hasn't been with them for years, Gerry and Dewey continue to sound as fresh today as when they first hit the charts with "Horse with No Name" in 1969. A sign that this CD is superb: I haven't stopped playing since I bought it in January.
The CD begins with the infectious tune, "Chasing The Rainbow" and ends with the beautiful, "Walk in the Woods". In between are splendid songs: "Always Love", the humorous "Look At Me Now", "Love and Leaving", "This Time" (whose lyrics almost predict the success of this "comeback" CD), "Work to Do", and the sweet, "All I Think About is You". I would only mildly criticize, "Ride On", which comes off as preachy.
I know some people will attribute "Here and Now's" success due to the production and influence of "hip" artists such as Adam Schlesinger, and James Iha. I too, applaud their contributions to this CD. However, let's be clear: this CD is pure America. Every song replete with heart, soul, and love, just like they've been doing it for 40 years. America is still vibrant after all these years. The added "live" CD is an outstanding bonus. When you listen to "Hear and Now", you will realize that it was America that influenced artists such as Schlesinger and Iha, not the other way aroound. Buy it, you won't have any regrets!
Orange Funnels & Snowy Tunnels.......2007-05-27
If there were no 2nd disc of live "best hits" performances, there's a good chance that I'd be content to just read about "Here & Now" here and now on Amazon, and listen to it at a friend's house. But, since there is this very alluring extra feature, and since GB and DB (America) did appear live on Letterman with Ryan Adams in support of this release, the motivation for me to cheer is certainly there.
The excellent live set may be especially appealing to high baritones (either meaning) who once did the obligatory guitar-band covers of these not-so-molding goldies from way back in the 70's. The tunes are holding up pretty darned well after all this time, and there's a great big hole in there for your harmony part, so sing it! Have fun, and don't forget the Proximity Effect - that's a well established audio principle which states that the closer you are to the speakers, the easier it is to sing along in tune!
The primary disc of brand new songs should have no problem appealing to mainstream fans of America's typically tame MOR feel (i.e., Tom Petty goes too far). The overall formula from the 70's remains essentially unchanged, right down to the "dibbadibbadit-dibbadibbadit" background vocals. Censor Alert: Gerry Beckley does use the "a**" word once. But elsewhere, those purtie magic 7th chords are (still) all over his tunes, and his crystal clear tenor sounds more direct, if that is possible, than it ever has. Dewey Bunnell keeps things grounded and continues to contribute good songs (my favorites actually). There's some nice help from Ryan Adams on track #6 "Ride On", his one guest spot. I was under the illusion that he had contributed to the whole thing, but oh well. Rusty Young (from the original Poco) also turns in some fine multi-instrumental support on his two appearances, and the used-to-be-everywhere-you-looked Russell Kunkel keeps time on his one.
The live set is from Oct. 2005 at the XM (as in satellite subscription radio) Performance Theater, which probably means that it was recorded in a warehouse outside of NYC (no location is given), but the audio quality is from the entirely acceptable if somewhat too direct board sound, and the pre-assembled home crowd has a very good time. With just two fewer songs, this would have all fit onto one disc. But *which* two would you drop?
~wonderful songwriters~ singers-musicians too...........2007-05-22
It restores my faith in mankind when I hear true..raw
talent. I was beginning to think that the music industry
was in a rutt-but thanks to wonderful songwriters like Dewey and
gerry....they have shown the young kids what a real song sounds like.
This rap has infected our youth-and even in rural areas of our
coutry and I beleive it is so important...that the young children
hear what real good music is-these two guys are wizards in their field.
and i love them-always have and always will-keep on rockin' Gerry and Dewey.....in the free world.

Five white noise sounds used to sooth babies
Customer Reviews:
Definitely A Must Have.......2007-04-30
My baby slept through the night shortly after I started looping track 5 (calming rain). We put a stereo in his room and turned the volume up and the cranked the bass. He loved it. He would only sleep for 3 hours at a time before I introduced this. Then the first night with the rain, he slept for 6 hours and then four hours. The second night he slept for 9 hours straight (9P-6A)! He hasn't repeated the 9 hours yet, but has at least been good for a 6 hour stint at night, which means we are only getting up once.
TIP: Turn up the volume. It does nothing if you don't blast it. If they are really fussy start with track 2 and then move on to tracks 3 or 5.
My baby sleeps through the night!.......2007-04-01
We had trouble getting our two month old to sleep soundly with all the creaks in the floorboards and older kids running around untill we picked up this cd. It was too cold to put a fan in her room and another cd (waves) wasn't doing the trick and we really need that constant noise for our light sleeper. The heartbeat on the cd, set to repeat so it plays all the time, is a lifesaver! I haven't really tried the other noises, since she wasn't a colicky baby, but since knowing a few in my life, I'm sure the vaccuum noise will work like a charm.
Although I never read the book or watched the dvd...
This was a great buy, and we are still using the cd at 5 1/2 months to keep her sleeping soundly at night.
amazing results.......2007-03-22
i had a very colicky baby from 2 weeks old to 10 weeks old and this was the best cd of all the ones i tried (classical, lullabye, ocean sounds, television, etc) to calm my baby and most importantly, to keep him sleeping longer. the last track was his favorite, the sound of the rain. he sleeps so much longer now that i play that track on "repeat" all night long. and i can get things done during his naps because the rain sound covers up the noise of me in the kitchen, etc. And, when he is really cranky and there's nothing else i can do for him, i can put him down in his bed and play the whole cd from start to finish and it calms him and puts him to sleep 75% of the time, which is a huge improvement from other attempts.
Slept through the night from day 1.......2007-03-09
We have used this in our bedroom, where we let the baby sleep, since we got home from the hospital. Every night, we simply turn on the CD (at number 5- rain) and hit repeat on the player. It repeats the rain sound all night long. As soon as we put our baby in the room, he is out like a light and sleeps through the night (since day one and now he is 10 weeks old). We only use the rain, since my husband can't stand to hear the other sounds that much, but now it is even hard for either of us to sleep without the CD :0)
Works like magic!.......2007-02-16
My 3-month-old daughter is a very fussy sleeper, and has been since a few days after birth. Using the 5 S's would calm her down, but she wouldn't fall asleep. As soon as we stopped, the crying would start again. Now, bedtime is much less of a fight. I swaddle my fussy baby, turn on the CD, and often within seconds she stops crying. She falls asleep with much less hassle. The various tracks on the CD can be used alone, in combination, or on repeat. My only complaint is that track 4, the hair dryer recording, begins and ends very abruptly. It has at times woken my daughter when it reaches the end of the track. But, when she is swaddled and crying in her crib, I turn on this recording, and she calms down within SECONDS...and soon afterwards, she falls asleep. This CD has definitely been a great purchase for our family.

It's not often that an album released in January gets called one of the best of the year in near-unison, but the second full length by Antony and the Johnsons is so startlingly beautiful that it simply has to be. Like his friend and compatriot Devendra Banhart, Antony is a super-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for dramatic artsong. But the cherubic Antony is so original he must get mistaken for an alien quite often; he sings like a bluesy opera singer and switches timbre from masculine to feminine in the space of a breath. The only vocal comparison that comes close is Nina Simone. Antony's honest lyrics deal with deep wounds and troubled desires with matter of fact poetry and subtle humor, as in a short story by JT LeRoy. Aided and abetted by a versatile band that's often closer to chamber orchestra than rock act, Antony delivers a visionary album with I Am A Bird Now. Oh yeah: Rufus Wainwright, Devendra, Lou Reed and Boy George all appear on here, too. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Moody and evocative.......2007-06-08
Got a bit of Nina Simone going on here and if you are into Nina you're likely going to enjoy this. It's torch music that's a shade or three sadder.
I bought this on hearing 'You are my sister' on Letterman. Loved that tune, but a whole album of basically the same thing may be a turn off for some folks - it can be a bit tedious.
It's a love it or hate it sort of thing. Not for everyone, but that might be why it's so special.
Antony & The johnsons.......2007-05-19
I couldn't be more pleased with the speed of service and quality of the product.
A great voice, unusual.......2007-05-12
I had been recommended this singer and the music by family abroad. It came up to the glowing reports they gave of it. Thanks!
Either good or bad, this will affect you.......2007-04-12
You can't listen to this and not feel something. Whether it's confusion, annoyance, or awe you are feeling - it's anything but your run of the mill music.
I can't stop listening to Fistful of Love. It gives me chills and makes me want to cry every time I hear it. It's not often you come by music that powerful.
A Bride on Fire.......2007-04-10
It's been a long time since I last felt the desire to share my thoughts on an album. True, I've never been a prolific reviewer. In the past, however, I was more receptive of things musical. Or should I say I was more easily enthused? Quicker at becoming attuned to the ways in which a textual object would lend itself to interpretation? Perhaps I was a keener semiotician then, or liked to think that I was. Perhaps I was more naïve and confident that I could grasp the complexities behind art, or at least that I might be able to uncover (and then convey) one possible meaning treasured within a work of art. Sadly, a lot has changed in my life over the past two and a half years.
Most significantly, I have been through an experience which seems to me to be so close to the one Antony describes incredibly well in I am a Bird Now, by means of the lyrics and the singing style employed. Does he really describe it though? I can't positively say. It sometimes seems like a fallacy on my part, like an easy projection of my life onto suggestions which are polysemous and poetic more than they are specific to any one situation. However, this realization would lead to self-censuring and self-castration. So let's for a minute pretend I'm right. Let's assume that I am a Bird Now is about Loss, about Grieving, about finding Reason or at least Hope and some Beauty in the midst of personal tragedy. Let's presume that it talks about the suffering of someone who doesn't feel at ease in their environment, both physical and psychological.
That Antony is a gender-bending artist is a given. That there is ample use of metaphor in his lyrics is likewise undeniable. While this contributes to making the songs feel painfully sincere, it doesn't strike me as central. Beyond Antony's gender-defying verbal and vocal renditions (which account for my lax use of pronouns), there seems to be a core topic, that of abandonment and loneliness, the sense that something has happened to place the bird in a cage, making it unable to fly. That's how the album starts off. If I am a Bird Now is indeed a story about survival and widowhood, as I like to see it, then it seems also to be a story about communication with those who have left us. There are many instances in which I see the unrequited monologue of the widow to her (my) loved one and her (my) faith that silent answers can be heard through unexpected channels. That's how pain and love become inextricably intertwined well beyond common masochism. Ultimately, the narration seems to develop toward some kind of solution, although it is more about resolve and wishful thinking than it is about actual recovery. It's an animal-like instinct to move on to a new prey, not by virtue of a predatory urge in and of itself, but for the sake of life over death. The most innocent of impulses, the one that truly allows for the bird gerhl to fly and then go to heaven.
Is it all a fallacy on my part, or is I am a Bird Now really to be taken so seriously? I do not know, nor do I care. What I do know is that listening to it made me cry those tears that I had been withholding up until then. That it stirred me and made me feel like someone was expressing the emotions that I myself was unable to express, even though I wanted to and needed to. What I do know is that this is the one CD that I have been wanting to review since I first listened to it, breaking my two and a half year reserve. While this doesn't make my assumptions any more accurate, it does pay honour to Antony and the Johnsons and to I am a Bird Now. This is a thank you, as well as a heartfelt five-star review.

great cd.......2007-05-07
If you want to hear lots of hits compiled on to one cd, then this is a great buy. I think the NOW cd's are great.
An Excellent CD.......2007-03-30
This is a very good addition to any NOW fans CD collection or anyone's,
in general, as it has a good variety of music. I will do a track-by-track
review:
1. Fergie-London Bridge: Fergie is okay solo. This is not a great track,
by any means, but it is better than "Fergalicious". And it has a good beat. B-
2. Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland-Promiscuous: Finally, Furtado releases
a decent song. This and "Say It Right" are awesome tracks and I'm glad she
finally showed her dancier side. A
3. Pussycat Dolls feat. Snoop Dogg-Buttons: I hate all Pussycat Dolls
material, and this is no exception. As before, a guest performer always helps add strength to a song by the Dolls. C-(for Snoop Dogg).
4. Justin Timberlake feat. Timbaland-SexyBack: I love this song, even though it was overplayed. It just has an excellent hook and Timbaland is
great, too. This is GREAT. A++
5. Christina Aguilera-Ain't No Other Man: Some funky beats elevate an
otherwise average Aguilera song. So-so. C+
6. Beyonce feat. Jay-Z-Deja Vu: Like Aguilera's addition, some good beats
help this song, as does Jay's rapping. It's an okay song. B
7. Cherish feat. Sean Paul-Do It To It: This song is really annoying, but
now I've got it stuck in my head. Note: It's not the Sean Paul you think.
D
8. Kelis feat. Too Short-Bossy: This song is kind of funny and has a good
hook, so I like it fine. B+
9. Chingy feat. Tyrese-Pullin' Me Back: This is an okay Chingy song, since
he's not as annoying as he usually is, thanks to Tyrese. It has a good
backbeat, albeit a repetitive one. A
10. Lyfe Jennings feat. what's-her-name-S.E.X.: This is an average song,
at best. It's a little too slow for me. C
11. Ne-Yo-Sexy Love: This is an okay ballad, but that's all it is. Nothing
to get excited about. C
12. Rihanna-Unfaithful: This is a bad song, with an annoying chorus and
Rihanna's singing sounds disjointed. Ugh. D-
13. JoJo-Too Little Too Late: It's surprising to find teen pop on NOW again. Not that I really like it. C
14. Nick Lachey-I Can't Hate You Anymore: I don't think this was that big
a hit. It's not as good as "What's Left Of Me", and that song is pretty
bad, too. C-
15. Teddy Geiger-These Walls: I like this. It's heavier than "Confidence"
and Geiger sounds better on vocals this time around. Nice. A-
16. Jessica Simpson-A Public Affair: I like this song because of its
bouncy hook, but Simpson's voice gets annoying at points: A-
17. OK Go-Here It Goes Again: As you probably noticed, I am a rock fan,
and this song is very good. It's a great rock song, overall. A+
18. Hinder-Lips Of An Angel: I usually despise rock ballads, but this is
okay for its guitar solo and because the singer actually sounds sincere.
A
19. Nickelback-Far Away: This is a good ballad, too, even though it is
Nickelback and I usually don't like their stuff. A
20. Keith Urban-Tonight I Wanna Cry: I hate wuss country. F
This is a good NOW CD, even though none of them have been really bad.
Good for your MP3 player.......2007-03-30
I just wanted a few chart songs to add to my MP3 player. This fit the bill. Of course it comes with the standard songs you have no interest in, but that's par for the course with these types of CDs.
Good mix of music.......2007-02-17
This is another great CD in the Now series. Contains a good mix of all types of music and artisits.
a little better.......2007-02-17
This Cd is actually a little better than the last one. But i noticed that a lot of the songs that are on here aren't even that popular, such as jessica simpson, ok go, kelis, beyonce, lyfe jennings, ne-yo, nick lachey, and teddy geiger. i like some of those songs, but why are they on now 23? here is my list of ratings for each song:
1. Fergie- London Bridge: I knew this song was going to be on here, even though she released "fergalicious" about a week before now 23 came out and this song was forgotton. 5/5
2. Nelly Furtado f/ Timbaland- Promiscuous: The sweet nelly furtado has turned promiscuously hip-hop. what a transformation. 5/5
3. Pussycat Dolls f/ Snoop Dogg- Buttons: this is the better version of this song because it has snoop dogg in it. on their album, he is absent from this song. 5/5
4 Justin Timberlake f/ Timbaland- Sexy Back: jt's comeback single. he claims to be "bringing sexy back", but did it ever leave? other than that, good song. great lyrics. 4/5
5. Christina Aguilera- Ain't No Other Man: I love this song, but not this version of it. they blocked out the "a" word and it ruins the song because not only does it block out the word, but it blocks out the entire "oh yeah" that she says in the background, which is sort of disapointing because that word is not supposed to be blocked out. 3/5 otherwise, 5/5
6. Beyonce f/ Jay-Z- Deja Vu: I like this song, but what is it doing on now 23? it isn't popular enough to be on the now 23. but she has a new single called "irreplaceable" that IS popular enough to be on now 24. 5/5
7. Cherish f/ Sean Paul OF THE YUNGBLOODZ, NOT THE JAMACIAN ONE!- Do It To It- I like this song, but they block out the "D" word in it. that's my only complaint. 4/5
8. Kelis f/ Too $hort- Bossy: im going to give this the same rating as "do it to it" for the exact same reason. 4/5
9. Chingy f/ Tyrese- Pulling Me Back: This song is kind of boring. it almost puts me to sleep. 2/5
10. Lyfe Jennings f/ Lala Brown- S.E.X.: what is this? never heard of it.
0/5
11. Ne-Yo- Sexy Love: seriously, how many songs on this cd have the word "sex" in the title? 3/5
12. Rihanna- Unfaithful: NOOOOO! this song is ruined! they blocked out the word "gun"! i hate the now people for that and i will never forgive them! -100/5 otherwise, 5/5
13. JOJO- Too Little Too Late: WOW! this girl is my age (16) and has a great voice. if she would have waited a little longer, she would probably done extremely well on American Idol. the only thing about this song is that it is overplayed, but i'm used to it. 4/5
14. Nick Lachey- I Can't Hate You Anymore: this song is NOT that popular and shouldn't be on the now. he is singing to jessica simpson. he needs to stop singing songs about her. 0/5
15. Teddy Geiger- These Walls: What's this? never heard it before. 0/5
16. Jessica Simpson- A Public Affair: They did this on purpose! they put nick and jessica on the same album to make fun of their divorce. i don't know why they did it, but it's not funny! anyway, great song. my favorite on the album. it kind of reminds me of madonna's "holiday". 5/5
17. OK Go- Here It Goes Again: Once again, another song that isn't popular enough to be on the nows. great video. they are dancing on treadmills. 3/5
18. Hinder- Lips Of An Angel: REALLY hard rock. a song about 2 lovers who broke up, but only halfway moved on. they both found a new lover, but they still love each other. although the tone of the chorus doesn't match what he's talking about, good song. 4/5
19. Nickelback- Far Away: Nickelback's 3rd single from their album "all the right reasons". this song is also overplayed, but i like it when i actually WANT to hear it. 4/5
20. Kenny Chesney- Summertime: What's this? never head of it because i don't listen to country. i hate country music because it's all the same, which makes it boring. the only good thing about this song is the name. i wish it WERE summertime. it's freezing outside! -5/5
Here are some suggestions for now 24:
1. Beyonce- Irreplaceable
2. Fergie- Fergalicious
3. Gwen Stefani f/ Akon- The Sweet Escape
4. Akon f/ Snoop Dogg- I Wanna Love You
5. Rihanna f/ Sean Paul- Break It Off
6. Paula Deanda- Walk Away (Remember Me)
7. Ludacris f/ Mary J Blige- Runaway Love
8. Justin Timberlake f/ T.I.- My Love
9. Ciara- Promise
10. Nelly Furtado- Say It Right
