It was a gift for my father who turned 88 on March 1st.
I sent it to him in Spain. He has been a guitar teacher all his life and still has students now in his ripe old age. He loved it, loved the music, loved the way they play.

Once again the L.A.G.Q. triumphs with their transcriptions of the very well known works included here. All of the music lends itself very well to the instrument, especially in the hands of this phenomenal quartet. This debut recording of the Ian Krouse selection is dramatic, dynamic and generally astounding. This is absolutely one of my favorite guitar recordings.

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

One of the signature avant garde jazz sessions of the early 1980's - Magico is an overlooked classic - the music is thickly textured - colorful - engenders atmosophere - Gabarek and Gismonti were a happy combination - and all that they recorded together in their too brief collaboration is worth a listen.

Just before "new age' music even really existed, ECM records, unknowingly, helped to create what was referred to at the time as "chamber Jazz".
Most of the ECM musicians came from some type of jazz backround, but usually also mixed into their musical stew much classical music and European influences, as well as ethnic and folk musics (nowadays referred to as World music).
This is one of many 5-star ECM discs. Sadly it seems for most folks ECM music is just too hard to comprehend it seems-too many people can't relate to it because it doesn't sound like any of the music they grew up with. Too bad, and their loss.
Thankfully, this one goes down a bit easier, so it makes a great introduction to ECM as well as to all 3 of these musicians.
As usual with ECM the recorded sound is excellent-which really matters when one is dealing with this type of music, or any music this intimate and quiet (and acoustic-based). No other recordings from any Jazz or creative music label from the 70's sound anywhere near as good as ECM recordings.
I have this one on vinyl-since I purchased it shortly after it originally came out-but the CD is better just for the fact that it's wonderful to hear this quiet, spacious music, without any surface noise or tape hiss.
I think Egberto Gismonti may have at least one other masterpiece that I must list here-titled "Solo" and recorded for ECM at around the same time. If you happen to love "Magico" then I would say Gismonti's "Solo" as well as the very good follow-up to this album-"Folk Songs" by the same 3 musicians, would be the 2 most important CD's to get.. Haden's music on his own spans mostly different types of Jazz -especially Ornette Coleman-style work, and most of Garbarek's music has more electronic instrumentation as well as a busier instrumental pallette (through the use of lots of additional musicians, especially percussionists, and extensive overdubbing), as well as having a very different instrumental line up, so not many of Garbarek's other recordings exist in this world...
This is one to put on, sit back, and "get lost in", which is the highest compliment I can pay to any recording.
I have hundreds of lp's and about 2 or 3 thousand CD's, so just the fact that I would take the time to write a review for this one should speak for itself...

5 out of 5 stars With two of the most gorgeous jazz performances ever . . ........2003-10-02

. . . , "Bailarina" and "Palhaco," Magico is not to be missed. This (and to a slightly lesser extent the companion disc Folk Songs, containing the same personnel) is certainly a hight point in the history of jazz. When Manfried Eicher got Haden, Gismonti, and Garbarek in the studio at the end of the seventies to perform their trio magic, something special, something probably completely unanticipated, happened: haunting, elegiac, ravishingly beautiful songs in the context of lilting collective improvisation.

Garbarek with his keening, Nordic sax; Haden with his rock-solid Midwestern American bass; Gismonti with his dancing, mercurial Brazilian guitar and piano: three distinct voices blending and interweaving mysteriously, magically.

Perhaps bearing a superficial resemblence to New Age music, Magico is actually one of the first authentic world jazz discs. With this, Codona, and Danca das Cabecas, ECM was a pioneer of jazz beat records way back in the seventies.

Although each member receives equally billing (with Charlie Haden, perhaps understandably listed first, due to his wider stateside reputation), this record essentially belongs to Egberto Gismonti. The plurality of compositions is his; He wrote the title cut, and the most stunning number on the album "Palhaco," with its impossible weight of poignancy, its haunting, unforgettable melody, its sad, loving rendition; and the project would be inconceivable without his irreplaceable guitar and (underrated) piano playing. This is not to underplay the contributions of the others--just to give credit where credit is due.

All three of these players went on to make major jazz recordings of their own (none greater than Gismonti's fabulous Sanfona), but together, here, they make unique, absolutely satisfying small-group world-jazz of the highest order.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Exploration.......2001-09-30

This album is unlike most anything in my collection, but it's incredible. I'd classify this as "Jazz Trance" music if there is such a thing. The album can really transport you to various places, but unlike new age and trance music you normally think of, the acoustic playing feels a lot more real and the music breathes instead of drones. The composition, "Silence", can take a simple chord progression and with it bring you to tears and then dry them off for you by the end of the piece. The album is for anyone that appreciates raw, haunting, emotional playing.

To me this is the greatest album of all the three artists.
Neither Garbarek nor Gismonti has made a greater album to date. It's sad that I'm writing the first review in english. All the songs are tranquil. My favorite is Palhaco. This album lets you free from the moment and takes you to magic waters. Listening to this album is like an exciting swimming experience in the waters which you cannot see beneath its surface but still gives you an enthusiasm to explore

    I got this CD as a gift for my 21st birthday and it is wonderful. It is delightful and dozy, complete with recommendation by Cardiologist and Poet, what more could a person ask for?!!
    Granted, some tracks almost put me to sleep...

        Album Description

        Composer Eduardo Angulo was born in Mexico in 1954 and began his musical training at the age of seven at the National Conservatory in Mexico City. He won a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he graduated with honors in 1975. Since his return to Mexico he has devoted himself almost entirely to composition. Numerous musicians have commissioned his chamber, choral, symphonic, and concerted works. In 2003 his Rituali for guitar, mandolin, violin, and cello won Second Prize in the International Composition Contest in Germany. Jesús Medina is one of Mexico's most charismatic conductors. In 2001 his recording of concertos by Eugenio Toussaint was nominated for a Grammy Award.

          Elida Y Avante shine in this hit albulm after the release of their EYA 98 ALBULM they keep the hits rolling with MAGICO, the title track is great and it really shows off how polished this group is with their tejano music. Elida continues to prove that she is a heavy weight contender amongst the female tejano singers, she proved that on the night she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards in 2000. It was befiting a woman of her excellence. I personally own this albulm and just love the tejano, ballads and conjunto, there's something for everyone in this albulm, I suggest purchasing it however you can it is a must!!! Love the albulm, the group, TEJANO ROCKS!!

          The worst EYA album. I was really let down with this album. It's certainly doesn't live up to "EYA 1998".

          This album was released when the group was basically unknown, but the skill of the group and Elida's unmistakable vocals are a must- hear. "Luna Llena" wins my pick for best of the album, "Duele" fans will love it.
