The fluent guitarist shines in the company of big tenor Ike Quebec and pianist Sonny Clark on this reissue, recorded in late 1961 and early 1962. Though well versed in bebop and inspired a great deal by Charlie Parker, Green relished beautiful ballad melodies and the soulfulness of the blues. Both are readily on display here, especially considering the fact that both Quebec and Clark had similar tastes. Green handles slower tunes such as "My One and Only Love" and "Count Every Star" with extreme care and sensitivity, showing wonderful melodic creativity embellished by quick, crafty runs. The title track (offered in two versions) showcases Quebec's dense but delicate tenor, which betrays a notable Ben Webster influence. Of particular note are Green's molten readings of an uptempo "Someday My Prince Will Come" and of Bird's "Cool Blues." --Marc Greilsamer

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar
®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03
It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!
A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23
Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

Austin scene queen Price's sixth album is another enjoyable exercise in her signature "hippie blues" stylings, a comfortable cross-pollination featuring country, R&B, and a few jazz tinges. Price's imperfect but evocative voice is showcased in front of outstanding instrumental work, especially from acoustic guitarists Rich Brotherton and Casper Rawls, while legendary guitarist James Burton provides touches on nine of the 13 tracks. Strong songwriting, from sources as diverse as Walter Hyatt ("Get the Hell Outta Dodge"), Dr. John (the previously unrecorded "Clouds"), Mel Torme (the title track), and longtime Price associate Gwil Owen, gives the singer ample opportunity to work her relaxed wonders. The songs are short and to the point, and Price and her sympathetic sidemen make each note and every well-turned phrase count. The album, dedicated to the late multi-instrumentalist Champ Hood, concludes with "One of These Lonely Days," an atypical but successful foray into an expanded sound featuring the Tosca String Quartet. --Michael Point

I'd never heard of Toni Price, until I heard one of her songs on Pandora. I liked the song, so I bought "Born to Be Blue". Now I can't stop listening to it! I just came to Amazon to order a couple more CDs - Toni Price is a fine singer!
Fairweather Love.......2004-01-17
"I want to live in a beautiful garden, I want to lie where flowers bloom, I want to sing what the birds are singing, I want to fly just like they do," Toni starts on a folky hippie tune complete with acoustic guitar on a track that is as gorgeous as it is retro. Toni throws Blue into jazz gear on the sweet shuffle "Black & Blue Heart," "It seems like I just give up, but maybe I ain't very smart cause I keep on falling in love and breaking my poor old black & blue heart." "You Don't Love Me" turns back the clock to the 1940s with its Billie Holiday light jazz feel. The title track written by Mel Torme would be at home with the last call at the Starlight Lounge. "Sad as It Seems" is a country weeper. "Blue River" (not by Eric Andersen) is a perky bluegrass hoedown with Casper Rawls doing the back porch vocals. "There's Nothing But Heartache" gives Toni's gorgeous voice a chance to float achingly around the melody on a sweet midtempo track, "There's nothing but heartache in loving you." Shelley King's "Tennessee Whiskey" sounds like a reincarnation of Bobbie Gentry. Dr. John's "Clouds" is given a great soulful reading with James Burton's loping guitar. My favorite track is the bluesy midtempo "Rain Down Tears," "When you're out there in this world alone, there'll come a day when you'll miss this happy home," she sings about a fair-weather love. Gwil Owen's "Not Coming Home" has a lovely melody with the soft acoustic guitar backing Toni's aching vocal. "Get the Hell Outta Dodge" is pure Texas swing. The CD concludes with another slow Gwil Owens' tune, "One of These Lonely Days" with the gorgeous Tosca String Quartet bringing it to climax. There's no real addictive toe tapper like "Thank You for the Love" from "Midnight Pumpkin" on this set. Toni is taking her time. This is a great tear-in-your-beer set by one of our great female vocalists. Enjoy!
another knockout.......2003-10-23
Toni has released another gem, y'all.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed!
I was lucky enough to attend the CD release party at the Continental Club in Austin last night, and the band was HOT...

Born to be Ballads.......2005-10-27
This one was a little too subdued for my tastes. I didn't like Idle Moments or Street of Dreams either. And I'm really not into Ballads. So I guess if you like the slow stuff, you might like this one too. Otherwise, you might be a bit disappointed.
Green: Born to be Blue.......2005-01-02
Born to be Blue is one of Grant Green's best outings along with Idle Moments and Street of Dreams. His guitar tone has a pristine jewel-like opulence which fits the standards he covers (as well as one original) beautifully, and his always groove-laden playing ranges from a probing lyrical marcato to smooth single-note runs. Ike Quebec (saxophone) plays first-rate solos throughout, especially on the title-cut and 'My One and Only Love'. Ike is a very straight ahead saxophone player--(contrast to Joe Henderson [also great] in some of Grant Green's more adventurous settings)--and as one reviewer aptly put it: not unlike Coleman Hawkins. Born to be Blue is very accessible, yet the playing is far too intelligent and imaginative to delve into any muzak-ish schmaltz. I'm a huge fan of post-bop progressive jazz . . . i.e. Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy, Sam Rivers etc . . . and I found Born to be Blue to be quite engaging on many levels. Hence it is a recording palatable to both myself and my (or practically anybody's) grandparents.
Question to other reviewers or listeners: Has anyone noticed a scratchy or staticky(sp?) sound on some of the percussion tracks. I'm trying to determine whether it is my copy or the recording in general. It is not a big enough liability to detract any stars from my review, nor does it detract from my enjoyment of the cd.
Born to be blue.......2004-08-22
Grant's phrasing on this album is spectacular. I really like My One and only love. Ike Quebec's solo on that number is absolutely beautiful. Grant really shines on Cool blues; I know these guys were having fun on that tune. It sounds very joyful
Ike "Coleman Hawkins" Qubec doing fine............2001-06-13
The mix of musicians on this recording first starts to make you wonder... does this really work.. and the answer is yes. Of course it is so that Quebec is so heavily influenced by Hawkins that at times you wonder if it is not Hawkins that are playing, anyway, Quebec plays nice and it works out nicely together with Green. It seems that Green was at the best of moods when recording this, his soloing is very "boppish" light, bouncing and not to mention "Swinging", good example of this is "Somedxay My prince will Come! and "Back on your own backyard". When I first heard "if I should loose you" I had to laugh when listening to Greens solo. "he is playing jokes" some odd licks, and at one place a repeated lick (like he aleays use to do) but this time it did not seem to be to go deeper into the groove, but rather to surprise the lister, even though . I have listened to Green almost every day for 30 years, I thought that ther something wrong with my CD player. I also like what Louis Hayes are doing, he keeps the music swinging, his light touch is delicate, and he does not sound like a stone crusher.
Good.......2001-01-13
"Born to Be Blue" and "Cool Blues" are the standouts. Overall a very good, if somewhat subdued, recording.

One of Freddie's Best.......2000-12-07
Grab your credit card and order this one quick. In my opinion, this is one of Freddie Hubbard's finest recordings. He blows hard, fast and beautifully. This CD is in the hard bop tradition and the music is wonderful.
For this recording date, Freddie teamed up with sax ace Harold Land, keyboard player Billy Childs, bassist Larry Klein, and drummer Steve Houghton (his working band at the time).
I would like to also mention that the recording quality of this date is also wonderforl. Despite being recorded in 1982, engineer Allen Sides did a WONDERFUL job; the recording is clean, crisp and captures the magic of this date. The master tapes must of been well cared for all these years.
So, if your a Freddie Hubbard fan and you don't own this one, you must add this to your collection.
Everytime I listen to this CD I realize just how terrific this trumpet player was and how much I miss Freddie making music today. He was in top notch, creative form on this recording.

The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11
Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!
Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15
I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.
Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.
I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.

Born To Be Blue.......2003-12-03
I bought this wonderful LP by Anne Phillips around 1961 and immediately fell in love with it. I played it so much that it wore out and is quite scratchy today, but still playable. I own over 3,000 LP's and CD's and can't think of any that I have played more than this one. I've been looking for another copy for some time without success. You can't imagin my glee when I found out that it was re-released as a CD and immediately ordered it. I love music and listen to it almost constantly. And if I were marooned on an island and could have only one CD, this one could very well be it. The selection of songs, Phillips' voice and style and the instrumental accompaniement couldn't be more perfect. This is the ideal music when you are in a melencholy mood, for a romantic setting or just feeling lonely or blue. I can't thank Anne Phillips enough for all the pleasure her music has given me over the years.
FINANALLY!!!!.......2001-11-25
It's back and how I missed it. I, too owned this original 78 album way back when. I can't add anything more than the first review of this for I feel as if I wrote that one but I thank whoever is responsible for releasing this. Has incomparable "oldies"that should be re-released and why Capitol doesn't release all those Dakata Staton LP's are beyond me for each is a classic with a unique voice who put out major and numerous albums. The one I personally ould like to acquire in a CD (I have the cassette) is Laurel Masse titled Easy Living--this is so unmatched and the only sounds I know of you.
Correction.......2001-04-28
The album I called "Lonelyville" in my earlier post was released as "Born to be Blue." It had been referred to as "Lonelyville" before its release and somehow that stuck in my memory. This is one of the best pop-jazz vocal albums ever recorded by any artist. It is a miracle it has reappeared again after more than 40 years on C.D. I never imagined we'd see that. It was a masterpiece then and is a masterpiece now. When you hear Anne Phillips sing "I've Got To Pass Your House to Get To My House" your heart will break. Music like this performed like this is so rare. Do get this album while it can be gotten.
Not a review--an inquiry.......2001-04-27
Searching today I whimsically thought of Anne Phillips and her wonderful 1959 album "Lonelyville." This, I thought, no one knows about, this never could have made C.D. but bingo bango I think "Born To Be Blue" IS "Lonelyville." Guess I'll know when I get it. The five stars are for Anne Phillips the singer, someone who after more than 40 years has a little-known album people STILL talk about. I cannot get over the fact it may have survived and is on C.D. Too good to be true. When I get the C.D. I'll review it but if it indeed IS "Lonelyville" I can tell everyone already don't miss it!

Decca's answer to Joni James?.......2004-03-24
Ms. Kenney sounds like Joni James trying to imitate June Christy (common factor: both sing juuuust this side of flat). If you are a fan of either singer, you might enjoy this bland and deservedly obscure chanteuse. If you are looking for jazz singing, or even pop singing with style, look elsewhere. As for me, I'll wait until this is out of print, then put it up on eBay.
Buy it! She was a queen!.......2001-11-18
Beverly! The sweetest voice from the fifties shows how to sing jazz without vibratos or scats. Died so young, she left a legacy of few recordings, like other forgotten singers such as Lucy Ann Polk, Helen Carr and Ida James.
Look for her out of print releases on Spanish label Fresh Sound.
If you want to know similar voices, listen to the superb Canadian Diane Nalini, the gorgeous Australian Janet Seidel (...) or the best of them: Stacey Kent!
