For their second full-length, the Montreal-based seven-or-eight-piece Arcade Fire show themselves capable of Big Rock, as original, and as potentially marquee-topping as TV on the Radio and Sigur Ros. Regardless, the intentional murkiness of these pleasantly anthemic New Wave dirges makes it sound as if the music has already reverberated through a crowded cement stadium. Named after cult author John Kennedy Toole's first novel, Neon Bible is smart and subtle enough to present itself as a personal discovery for every listener, every word to be pored over by fans (as with those of Tori Amos, Pavement, and Radiohead). Surely, lines like "The sound is not asleep/ It's moving under my feet" have already been scribbled onto the margins of countless textbooks. Such words are delivered with less intensity this time, but no less import. For vocal influences, lead singer Win Butler seems to have traded his '80s Bowie in for an '80s Springsteen, at least on the songs "Antichrist Television Blues" and "Windowsill" (though "Intervention" sounds an awful lot like '80s era Go-Betweens). The kitchen sink arrangements include the use of an Eastern European orchestra, pipe organ, hurdy gurdy, and a military choir. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good.
Customer Reviews:
Successful Change.......2007-06-20
Following on from the stirring, morbid and undoubtedly unique journey of "Funeral", Arcade Fire dispels any fears (and critic's expectations) of a slacking follow-up. "Neon Bible" is quite simply one of the best albums I have heard in recent years. Vastly superior to the fields of mediocre pop-rock and even the band's past high standard - this is an album to savour.
Successfully different is the theme for "Neon Bible". Instead of re-hashing a tried and tested formula, the band branch out an array styles and refine their existing idiosyncrasies. New flavours are introduced to spectacular effect - perhaps best shown by the glorious stomping "Antichrist Television Blues", a song many have been comparing to heyday Springsteen due to Butler's stressed and authoritative delivery of lyrics attacking the state of current affairs. A similar theme is applied to "Windowstill", a yearning ballad with Butler singing about his desires to move on and away from this troubled society.
Further developments in sound include the album's sublime closer "My Body Is A Cage", which sees the band entering slow-burning blues, fusing it with the eerie backdrop of searing pipe organs. Similarly, other album highlight "Intervention" showcases the thundering organs as the central piece, with the song slowly picking up pace until it becomes a stomping riot through Butler's potent lyrics concerning the ideals and demands of modern life, "you say it's money that we need, as if we're only mouths to feed", and religion, "working for the church while your family dies", and how ultimately love needs to be tendered, "every spark of friendship and love will die without a home". While these may not be revolutionary lyrics, Butler's compelling style of delivery gives a fantastic sense of desperation, letting his emotions spill out and giving great weight to his words and the music backing it.
I believe these changes make "Neon Bible" such a major success for me, as it shows the band developing and adding new influences to an already exceptional sound. This is not to say "Neon Bible" is just an outing into new territory as there is still that signature vibe and atmosphere, only refined for better effect. This is shown in one of my favourites "Keep The Car Running" which seems a direct continuation of sounds from "Funeral", combining the strong galloping march of "Power Out" and the lush vocal harmonies of "Wake Up", only this time the structuring is concise and trimmed, making for a more refined outing. The same refinement can be said for "No Cars Go", the pinnacle song from Arcade Fire's debut EP, only this time it is executed in riotous style, emphasising the powerful strings and catchy chorus melodies. "Ocean of Noise" strikes me as a great improvement on the slower and brooding ballad approach, and showcases one of Butler's most menacing and brooding performances to date.
Other tracks unmentioned keep the album flowing, and make for an album free of any filler. Songs such as the gloomy opener "Black Mirror", the subtle atmospheric title track and the two-part "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" round off "Neon Bible".
"Neon Bible" lived up to my expectations and delivers one of the most powerful and stirring albums in recent years. Combining the old triumphant sound of "Funeral" and executing new influences and styles, the album is sure to please fans old and new.
Beautiful beyond description!!.......2007-06-17
"Neon bible" is Canadian rock group Arcade Fire's sophomore disc. I'd read loads of glowing reviews of this CD (which usually makes me wary) but guess what, it is brilliant!
Built around the core of husband and wife team Régine Chassagne (who does most of the singing) and Win Butler, their debut "Funeral" was critically acclaimed and nominated for Grammys.
Their music is melancholic, but highly melodic, incorporating orchestral arrangements, choirs, organs, and even accordion, giving them a sound like no other band.
"Black wave/bad vibrations" is a two part song, the first sunny, upbeat half sung by Win, while the moodier second half (with haunting angelic harmonies) is sung by Régine. It is simply stunning!
It flows into "Ocean of noise" which opens with the sound of thundering waves, leading into a brilliant swelling midtempo song drenched in guitars and organ. My favourite song; haunting and beautiful.
"My body is a cage" starts off as an organ driven blues song, progressively layered to an almost hymnal fervor.
For upbeat songs, we have the shimmery "No cars go" (describing an Amish-like existence), "The well and the lighthouse" , and the sunny "Keep the car running".
"(Antichrist television blues)" has a country feel, while the organ/accordion driven "Intervention" is simply grandiose.
The CD has already made #2 in the US and UK, and I'm sure it will earn more accolades (Grammys) down the line.
Trust me, this is no Funeral........2007-06-13
I was just plain bored with this album. I loved Funeral and the self titled ep, but I guess my hopes were just too high with this one. The difference between Neon Bible and Funeral is that on Funeral the songs actually feel like they had some sort of energy and they all stick out as great tracks. On Neon Bible, everything just feels slow moving, like the album is trying to build itself up for some great payoff in the end, but it fails. it just feels like its chugging along to nowhere, and derailing itself in the process. some of the lyrics on the album are really embarassing too. I think everyone just really wanted to like this album and i think thats why its getting such great reviews from critics and being called a successful followup. I think it sold so many albums because it got mainstream radio play, and i think, in its defense, it is a hell of a lot better than anything else on the radio. it has its moments, but not a whole albums worth like Funeral.
Simply Amazing.......2007-06-13
For those who haven't heard this record, buy it, and listen to it about 10 times in a row. You might not think it's all that special at first, but TRUST ME, you will soon find it to be one of the most incredible releases in recent years. If you liked "Funeral," you MUST have this record, as it is even better than its predecessor! Get it NOW! You won't regret it.
Great....until the bottom falls out........2007-06-09
I was fully prepared to give this album 5 stars. I really was. I really liked the variety - the foot-stomping rhythm of "Keep The Car Running", the sad & haunting "Ocean Of Noise", the way "Bad Vibrations/Black Wave" and "The Well & The Lighthouse" each shift gears midway through. I definitely liked where the album was going. And then WHAM! Arcade Fire tacked "No Cars Go" (a crummy, excessively-layered dud reminiscent of the Thompson Twins) and "My Body Is A Cage" (just an overall snoozer) onto the backend of this record and I couldn't help but feel disappointed. Overall, this is a nice move up from Funeral, however I can't help but feel like maybe the band should've quit while they were ahead...or else adjusted the track list. Still worthy of 4 stars on the strength of the other songs.

Arcade Fire fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and they've been hungry for more music from their favorite group. But be forewarned, this EP was actually recorded and released by the band independently in 2003. The EP is an interesting view into the development of these musicians; decidedly less experienced at that point, the band didn't have quite as much oomph as they do now. When you compare these tracks with their first single, "Rebellion (Lies)" from Funeral, you can immediately feel a difference in confidence, from vocals on through to orchestration. That said, there is still plenty for fans to enjoy on this EP; for starters, none of these seven songs show up on their full-length, so that gives Fire fans an extra half hour of music to enjoy. Secondly, husband and wife team Win Butler and Régine Chassagne's vocals and songwriting still shine, most especially on the standout "No Cars Go" and the beautifully fragile "Headlights Look Like Diamonds." Funeral remains the best introduction to Arcade Fire, but this CD is still a great glimpse of a band with a bright future ahead. --Denise Sheppard

Amazon.com essential recording
Even when this Minneapolis trio dabbled in familiar sounds, such as the strummed folk of "Never Talking to You Again" or the Bo Diddley-style R&B of "Hare Krsna," what came out on this swirling 1984 double album was clenched, emotional, and intense. Over 23 short songs that helped define the still-thriving punk subgenre known as hardcore, leaders Grant Hart and Bob Mould screamed their alienation in the fastest language they could possibly produce. Though Mould is the more personal songwriter, lashing out at liars and (presumably) lovers, both Hüsker heads come up with psycho-depression choruses like "What's going on inside my head?" --Steve Knopper
Amazon.com
They didn't yet have terms like "alternative rock" when Minneapolis's Husker Du made their mark as one of the 1980's most influential bands. With two skilled songwriters--guitarist Bob Mould and drummer Grant Hart--the genre-bending trio (bassist Greg Norton completed the lineup) juxtaposed hardcore punk speed and aggression with pop-leaning melodies. Add their uniformly thoughtful, introspective lyrics, and you've got this stunning 1984 double-length release, a semi-concept album about youthful rites of passage. It includes such memorable tracks as Mould's "Broken Home, Broken Heart" Hart's "Never Talking to You Again," and the evocative 14-minute instrumental closer, "Reocurring Dreams." --Billy Altman

Album Description
Love Arcade is the brainchild of Christian, a 19-year old wunderkind who wrote, recorded, produced, played, and sang everything on his debut. He writes songs that manage to effortlessly channel the last two decades of pop - 80's radio pop and 90's guitar squalls - and morph it into instantly catchy two-minute sonic confections. Reminiscent of Cheap Trick and Weezer, the album is a potent reminder of everything currently missing in contemporary rock 'n' roll radio, including a sense of humor. Tour history includes dates with MCS, Straylight Run, Dropping Daylight, Yellowcard, Matchbook Romance, Hit The Lights, and more.

Album Description
Imagine the Blank-wave Arcade--the color of night-time neon. Its' interior, an unlikely one night stand of high-tech and punk rock ethics. Lonely and desolate, its' supercollision pop rushes at you like images from a Berlin Blade Runner or Mad Max.
Their music, stark and uncompromising, is filled with electronic surges, darkwave brushstrokes, confessionals and come-ons. The Faint combine rock instruments (guitar, bass) with "now" electronic elements (synths, drum machines) to create melodic, melancholic post-modern music-- but not without hope. Their music is haunting, yet danceable--an aesthete's memory of tainted pop music. BAND_MEMBERS: Todd Baechle Jacob Thiele Clark Baechle Joel Petersen
Album Description
The Faint's second album (1999) Blank-Wave Arcade delivers more choppy new-wave rhythms, spiky guitars, and acidic, old-school synths, with a little punk-rock attitude thrown in for good measure. While the group has been compared to the usual suspects, like Gary Numan, Devo, and the Cure, there is also a strong resemblance to Blur's new wave/punk fusion. Saddle Creek.
