Amazon.com essential recording
Benny Goodman's formidable work in front of the big band made him one of the world's most popular musicians, but his work with these "chamber jazz" groups made him one of the world's most respected musicians. Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Jimmie Noone's Apex Club band, to name two, had prospered in the 1920s as small groups playing traditional New Orleans-style fare, but until Goodman's forays beginning in 1935, the small band had been limited to blues, Dixieland, and the group improvisations of the New Orleans style. Goodman applied the small-group concept to the steady 4/4 rhythm and the repertoire (mostly standards) of swing. Instead of being dance music, this small-group swing showcased the individual and collective talent of the musicians involved--and the talent and telekinetic interplay of these men were considerable to say the least. Like Goodman, pianist Teddy Wilson was a superior technician who never let technique come before spirit or emotion. His miraculous left-hand harmonic invention (listen to "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy") and his sharp sense of humor (listen to him boogie-woogie in "Exactly Like You") never came at the expense of taste. Drummer Gene Krupa and vibraphonist Lionel Hampton provide the energy and drive. Meanwhile, Goodman's total mastery of the clarinet gave him the freedom to soar effervescently, growl menacingly, and swing majestically--and to make it all sound effortless. A revolutionary set, without even considering the social implications of being the first racially integrated band. Perfection never sounded so playful. --Marc Greilsamer

Russia's greatest gift to America-BENNY GOODMAN!!!.......2005-03-31
Yet another groundbreaking small group, Benny Goodman's small groups are really what sealed his legend. Goodman sounds so cool in this one and so does Lional Hampton on the vibes, Gene Krupa on drums, Teddy Wilson on piano, and John Kirby on bass, before he would strike out on his own and further influence small band jazz. Benny Goodman is just what his name says-GOOD MAN!
Some of the Greatest small band jazz ever recorded..........2005-03-30
All I ask is, even though this is gold already, Where is the song "Rose Room?!" That was a wonderful song and was part of my introduction to Goodman. It also features the man whom Benny Goodman himself was quoted to have said that "his bands would not have been the same without." That man is the hugely infulential big band leader/arranger/pianist Fletcher Henderson(1897-1952) He played piano on the track Rose Room and I will agree with Goodman with what he said but I will also add that Goodman and Duke Ellington would have been lost without the influence of Henderson. For those of you who have no idea who Fletcher Henderson was, perhaps the fact that Louis Armstrong played cornet/trumpet for Henderson from the fall of 1924 to early 1925 will jog your memory. So those of you who are Satch enthusiasts can trace Pops to the great man called Fletcher. It sucks that a difference in labels because Rose Room was recorded for Columbia, this great song which features two titans of swing is left off. Still, essential collection though.
Great music, poor digital mastering to CD........2004-12-05
The music on this 3 CD set represents what I feel is Goodman's best work. This makes it so unfortunate that the sound quality of the CD is so thin and flat. The producers had some good source material so there is no excuse for the lack of fidelity in this set.
If one compares this set to something like the Decca Billie Holiday set, you have to wonder what went wrong with this CD.
Perhaps the producer had a phobia about surface noise and the engineer was forced to overprocess the music to death.
Even though I am unhappy with the sound quality of this BMG product, I would not be without it because the music is so good.
Goodman at his jazzy best.......2001-05-13
This 3-CD, 67-track box set is the ultimate gift for that Benny Goodman combo fan you know or love. Most collections have some of these tunes, and some even have most of them, but the 20 alternate takes included here make this a real bargain. The 40-page illustrated booklet is the frosting on the cake. You'll get plenty of Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and Gene Krupa on this, but you may be surprised to rediscover vocals by Helen Ward, Martha Tilton and Hampton along the way. An excellent example of what more record companies should be doing today!
Beautiful Box Set -- Somewhat Disappointing Transfers.......2001-03-04
Having owned earlier 78 and LP incarnations of these and the previous BMG/RCA CD set of Goodman's Small Group recordings, which I believe were derived from the much noisier French RCA Black-and-White transfers and contained the very skimpy "Jazz Tribune" liner notes, I really looked forward to this 3-CD box set. First of all, I should point out that this new release contains unissued alternate takes and recordings from sessions in 1937, 38 and 39 not included in the aforementioned "The Complete Small Combinations" 2-CD set. Moreover, the liner notes in this release are among the finest that I have ever seen and are replete with detailed discographical and session info. To top it all off, the photos and graphics work are rather tastefully done. Now for the negative... According to the reissue notes, the audio engineers went back to the original metal parts and test pressings from BMG's vaults to use as the source material for this set, substituting in transfers from carefully-preserved shellac copies from the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers when necessary. Naturally, I expected a significant improvement over the previous issues. The only improvement that I noticed was a marked reduction in surface noise and imperfections, confirming my hopes that they really used cleaner source material. However, it seems that the transfer engineers decided to process the sound way beyond what I consider to be acceptable. The result is a rather dull, hollow and distorted piano tone. Moreover, Krupa's and Tough's brushes are practically filtered out because of this overuse of the CEDAR denoising system. Oddly enough, Goodman's clarinet manages to come through quite clearly. Had the engineers taken a slightly less interventionist approach, I would be giving this release a full 5 stars. Simply put, they sacrificed too much of the music in an attempt to scrub away practically all of the surface noise. This leads me to wonder why BMG/RCA did not hire the services of transfer engineer extraordinaire Ward Marston for this project. After all, he was involved in their excellent Rachmaninoff, Kreisler, Legendary Performers, and Rubinstein classical projects... Overall, I recommend this set with the one reservation about the overprocessed, overfiltered sound. As for the performances themselves, they are absolutely magical and ought to be mandatory listening for everyone interested in this musical genre. Enjoy!

Start Here.......2007-02-12
Don Byas played and recorded with musicians of varying abilities, so it can be difficult finding collections that are consistantly up to my expectations when I think of Byas. Some of the highlights of the rhythm sections on these disks include Slam Stewart and Eddie Saafranski on bass, Denzil Best and Sid Catlett on drums, and Johnny Guarnieri and Errol Garner on piano. But there are quite a few lesser known players here. But there is a lot of good to great Byas, and that's where the value of this collection lies.
The dates for these 4 disks are very focused: between 1944 - 1946.
There are a few tracks that don't seem to fit with the rest, (the 3 tracks featuring the blues singing of Albinia Jones stick out from the rest of the collection), but you get a lot of great tunes, with good sound, and great blowing by Byas.
The repertoire is also really good... from ballads to Cherokee.
Besides the wonderful playing by Byas and the repertoire, this set also has a good sampling of Slam Stewart's overflowing musicality. Even if you're not a fan of Slam's vocalizing with his arco, you can't deny the magical chemistry between Slam and Byas.
I like this 4 CD set a little better than the 3 disk set also by Discoforme. Also recommended is the strangely titled album "A Tribute to Cannonball", featuring Bud Powell, Don Byas, and Kenny Clarke. (The record date was produced by Cannonball Adderly, who plays on an alternate take of Cherokee.)

Great early Pepper AND Shorty Roger's Debut Session!!!.......2004-08-27
This listing has the correct dates: 1947-1951. The other listing of 1974-1951 is incorrect!!
This is actually a complilation of FOUR disctinct dates which all feature Art Pepper, though he is NOT the leader on any of them. The main reason I bought this was to obtain a record of the first "Shorty Rogers and his Giants" session from Oct. 8, 1951 which is a seminal session..indeed some call it the birth of the "West Coast" sound. In any case, the pieces and arrangement by Rogers and the solos by Pepper are all outstanding.
The other three sessions are: Eddie Safranski's Poll Cats, with a number of Kenton-men and arrangements by Pete Rugolo (Dec 20, 1947); Babs Gonzales and His Orchestra (Mar 20, 1949) and the Shelly Manne Septet, Nov 12, 1951.
There are many great pieces, arrangements, and Pepper solos on this CD...don't miss it!

Customer Reviews:
Great sessions, but no remastering.......2007-02-08
Ben Webster (1909-1973) was certainly one of the tenor saxophone greats. This three disc collection produced by Definitive Records in Spain is actually a really nice find, provided the asking price is fair. I lucked out and found this in-store for next to nothing at a used book store. As the product description states above, this impressive Ben Webster compilation features all of his work from 1943-1951, both as a sideman and leader. However, this album does NOT contain any of his sessions found on the "Duke Ellington: Complete Columbia and RCA Victor Sessions", another box set by Definitive Records. There are also a few others missing here, including his 1942 session with slim Gaillard (though the session does appear on "Slim Gaillard & Slam Stewart: Complete Columbia Master Takes").
These recordings would earn 5 stars instead of 4 if the tracks had been remastered. The sound quality is still pretty good despite my reservation. Personally I would pay no more than $25 for this collection, though I hope you might find it for even less. It really is worth owning, notwithstanding the absence of remastering. With 61 tracks total, the offering is a generous one if not perfect. Certainly one I am glad to have purchased. But I got my copy for $12.99, new and remaindered. I was just at the right place at the right time. I hope this comes down to more reasonable prices, as $199 is ludicrous.
