Detroit-born pianist Tommy Flanagan worked in many bebop groups in the '40s and '50s. An accompanist for Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald in the '60s, Flanagan also recorded with Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Kenny Dorham, and Dizzy Gillespie. Along with Ellis Larkins and Hank Jones, Flanagan is one of jazz's most elegantly expressive stylists. The track "Dear Old Stockholm" from this CD was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Flanagan is supported here by his usual collaborators, Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. --Stanley Booth

The Answer to a Pirate's Prayer.......2007-01-14
I very much enjoy listening to this album and the other Toucan Pirate Albums. They have taken a very clever and entertaining approach to presenting traditional Irish music. This is a fun album.
Pirate Jigs for Every Gig.......2005-09-27
A fun, musically adept and atmospheric selection of tunes, this album added lots to my "Talk Like A Pirate Day" celebrations, both at work and at a dinner party at home. Hilarious to watch my co-workers drop by for a lime square ("Keeps off the scurvy, matey!") and end up dancing a little jig to the Toucan Pirates as they served themselves fruit salad. We listened to this CD several times over in the course of the day, and it kept up our spirits and pro-pirate attitude. Heartily recommended to lubbers and salts alike.
Yo Ho!.......2004-12-15
Just as good as Battle Songs of the Toucan Pirates! (If you want piratey music that isn't a children's sing-along album, this is perfect! Good music. Sound effects and "story" just set the mood.)

Tommy Flanagan.......2006-08-30
Wonderful CD for old timers. The music is soothing and very easy to listen. Piano bar style.
Fine Flanagan.......2004-08-23
I don't think Tommy Flanagan ever played anything, either as a leader or a sideman, that wasn't worth hearing. From first note to last "Sea Changes" features the same impeccable muscianship we (and a myriad of his fellow musicians who were blessed to have him on their own sessions) came to expect from him......maybe to count on him is a more appropriate way to put it. What I didn't know about was his skill as a composer: five of the eleven tunes here are Flanagan originals. The uptempo "Verdandi" leads to some rollicking playing all around, while "Delarna" is a lovely ballad; the other three pieces are quite good too. Another highlight is Flanagan's bluesy piano on Ma Rainey's "C.C. Rider" and.....well let me finish by just saying that every cut has much to recommend it. Bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash (great brush work!) offer able support throughout. Fine Flanagan as expected!
Masterpiece,of course,like every Flanagan's records!!!.......2003-10-20
Sadly, here is one of the last record by the immense Tommy Flanagan (1930-2001).One of the best ones ? Difficult to say yes, because he committed some fifteen or twenty albums of the same level;maybe not as great as "Sunset and the mockingbird" (one of the most amazing piano records of all times),but...
This exceptionnal album was recorded in New York City,March 11 and 12,1996,with two outstanding musicians: bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash. Both used to play with Tommy for many years. This CD includes many compositions by Tommy:"Sea changes",the very boppish "Verdandi"(it surely could have been written by Bud Powell),"Darlana","Eclypso","Beat's up";some great standards,Irving Berlin's "How deep is the ocean",Harold Arlen's "Between the devil and the deep blue sea",and Johnny Green's "I cover the waterfront";a Bird's song,"Relaxin' at Camarillo";an old blues, and a magnificent one,by Ma Rainey,"See see rider",and a traditionnal, the haunting "Dear old Stockholm".And I think that this sublime version of "Dear old Stockholm",a magnificent tune so rarely played by jazz musicians (Miles Davis,John Coltrane and a few others) is the absolute masterpiece of this album.Tommy's interpretation of this tune makes me think of Tadd Dameron's writing;this is a compliment,as I consider Tadd Dameron (1917-1965) as one of the most important writers and arrangers in jazz, with Duke,Monk and Benny Carter.
Of course,if you want to buy your first CD by Tommy Flanagan,I would urge you to start with the sunset and mockingbird album;but if you already own this CD,I won't tell you to choose this one rather than another;you'll need all of them:"Thelonica",of course,"giant steps"(not Coltrane's one, even if Tommy plays in),"Eclypso","Nights at the Vanguard","jazz poet","alone too long"(another superlative album,a real must). The post-bop era gave us a bunch of immense piano players;among them were Jaki Byard,Sir Roland Hanna, and Tommy Flanagan. They all left us recently.I never met neither Byard, neither Sir Roland;but (...)Tommy Flanagan was one of the very few Giants of jazz.
T. Flanagan/ Sea Changes - This CD contains sooo much music........2001-11-21
I was fortunate enough to see this particular trio a couple of times. As the other reviews suggest, Mr. Flanagan's small group recordings and performances epitomize the piano trio at its best, and this CD is no exception.
The one thing I would add to the mix here is that Lewis Nash and Peter Washington are brilliant in their own right. Mr. Flanagan is of course a master musician, and he had this configuration going for several years. The interplay between all three musicians is indescribable. If this sounds like excessive praise, all I can see is that I saw these guys a couple of times and it was really something to experience. It's lucky that the recordings exist.
I once heard someone say that if we lived in an ideal world, Tommy Flanagan would be recording every day. So here's one.
Tommy Flanagan is GOD.......2000-10-01
This ranks in my top three jazz trio albums of the moment (my other two being "Bill Evans Trio; Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Alan Broadbent Trio; Personal Standards"). This album has some of the most crisp, concise trio playing I have ever heard. Tommy Flanagan is a superb melodist, which makes the album shine. All of the tunes on here are filled with lyrical playing that will stick in your head for a long long time (listen to the title track; you'll like it). Dear Old Stockholm is a solo piano arragement, and it is beautiful.
Every track on this album is worth your time. If you are looking for very cool, melodic jazz then look no further.

Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23
This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.
The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

Album Description
Playing with versatility and a fierce imagination, Fahey expanded the boundaries of the guitar, and his contribution to American music is immense. Here is his trademark American Primitive sound at its most harrowing and resolute. Featuring Skip James-influenced vignettes, deep-sea string bendings, sonic collages, oaken reverberations, and lengthy, impressionistic suites, these recordings, made between 1996 and 1998, comprise a major portion of Fahey's canon. Undiluted, uncompromised, starkly honest, pure of vision and innovative. The 2XCD and 4XLP sets include over two hours of music, a 64-page book (CD), 12-page libretto (LP), new essays by Byron Coley, David Fricke, and David Grubbs, an interview with and original text by Fahey, plus previously unreleased photos (CD only).
Customer Reviews:
the Later late John Fahey.......2006-12-27
Ok so most of Fahey's fans hated his later "Sonic Youth" phase.
And, Reneldo and O'Roark sort of rediscovered Fahey, the same way Fahey sort of rediscovered Skip James.
The deal is - these are live recordings of a guitar genius, who hadn't been playing in some time, and had been abusing himself for some time, and had long ago decided that everything he had done up until this point in his history - was shiit (I sometimes think it's inevitable for great musicians to hate their past - i was gratified to see gang of four reunite and bang out my faves in 2005 - but Billy Zoom is acidic about X, despite the reunion).
This double CD set repackages TWO already available CDs. What is NEW is a nice booklet (split into two parts) with some nice essays and pictures.
And the cover artwork.
If you already have 'Womblife' and 'Georgia struts, atlanta stomps' (or is it Altlanta struts Georgia stomps?) you already have this music.
it's ONE guitar - electric in front of an audience. And it's Fahey being Fahey... doing his dreamy renditions of traditional pieces as well as his own. Very unusual stuff. There's no one like him.

Wonderful program of 20th century music performed brilliantly.......2007-04-21
This is a very strong cd. I am particularly fond of "Toward The Sea" and "Another's Fandango." Starobin's playing and tone are beautiful.
A Must For Guitarists.......2004-10-27
On this record Starobin plays some of the most intellectually challenging music written for the guitar. The Babbitt piece is possibly the most challenging piece in the repertiore. Guitarists should buy this album if for no other reason than to get exposed to the extremes of new music. Not to mention the fact that Starobin's performance is pretty spot on!

Two third noisy.......2003-06-20
This is not a solo guitar album as I was misled into acquiring by a careless CD storekeeper. The first three songs are nice and easy. It turns wild in the fourth one and many of those that come afterwards are mediocre arrangements of popular pieces. Though Williams has other very good stuff, I can't give it a pass for that one. So, two stars and don't fancy it if, like me, you want guitar music to help you relax and recollect.
