An unlikely star on the '60s rock scene who played "psychedlic jazz" on bills with Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead before sitting out most of the '70s and early '80s to meditate and escape commercial pressures, saxophonist Charles Lloyd has in his "comeback" phase established himself as a far deeper and more interesting player. His 11th album for ECM, and his first live one for the label, Sangam introduces his new trio, featuring Indian tabla ace Zakir Hussain (known for his work with Shakti) and acclaimed young jazz drummer Eric Harland (heard on Lloyd's previous CD, Jumping the Creek). A kind of followup to Which Way is East (2004), Lloyd's epic series of duets with his dear, soon-to-depart friend, drummer Billy Higgins, Sangam roots the leader's flowing and soaring spiritual investigations in a vibrant and varied rhythmic attack. True to the album title (Hindi for confluence or union), the band feeds off each other exceptionally well, especially considering this concert in Santa Barbara was their first together. Lloyd has never had the most imposing sound on tenor, but pushed by his partners, he works up moments of Coltrane-like intensity and drive. With his expansive palette--he also plays alto sax, flutes and tarogato--he avoids the slow, monochromatic mood-making of many of his '90s efforts. --Lloyd Sachs

Jazz and beyond.......2007-01-28
Charles Lloyd is an enigmatic figure who first made the scene in the '60s. The following decade saw him drift largely out of the business, making very few records and spending a period of time teaching transcendental meditation. The past 15 years have seen his career revived and taken to new heights through a series of albums with ECM.
His current outing for the label, 'Sangam,' was recorded in '04 at an event billed as 'Homage To Billy Higgins,' the legendary drummer who passed away in 2001.
Drawing upon the inspiration that Higgins had been for him, Lloyd assembled a trio at the Freihofer's Jazz Festival that was rich with rhythmic and percussive possibilities that included himself on tenor and alto saxophones, tarogato, bass and alto flute, piano, and percussion; Zakir Hussain on tabla, voice, and percussion; and Eric Harland on drums, percussion and piano.
The disc captures what transpired that night. The experience was as transcendent as the music, such that Lloyd kept the band, which is now known as the Sangam Trio, and supplements his regular quartet.
Unlike more 'conventional' jazz, where the order of business is typically theme, solo, solo, theme, 'Sangam' is more 'conversational' with the songform providing an outline from which the players engage in an interactive musical dialogue steeped in subtlety and nuance.
With the mentioned array of instruments at its disposal, the trio fashions a wide variety of shapes, colors, textures and sounds. Still its members remain ever mindful of retaining a sense of 'space' in what they do, thereby lending the music an organic ebb and flow that accentuates the individual and collective parts of this dynamic ensemble.
Those following Lloyd's renaissance, as well as those interested in checking him out for the first time, will find 'Sangam' to be an enlightening and indispensable document.
Direct Jazz Transmission fron the masters.......2007-01-25
Listening to Charles Lloyd is hearing a direct transmission from the masters of Jazz that Lloyd studied under and worked with. The list is too long to mention but to name but a few Oscar Peterson,Joe Zowenall,Tony Williams,Herbie Hancock,Keith Jarett,Jack DeJonette. The list goes on and on.Other than seeing Jimi Hendrix.I have never felt such an atmosphere of a true musical genius. His comand of time is astonishing as he works with Zakir Hussain on tabla and Eric Harland on drums. When you first see them on stage they look quite stark but from this trio completely based on the formation of a cosmic rythmn section flows a symphony of the freeist and most beautifully harmonic music I have ever heard.
Charles Lloyd reminds us of the basis of Jazz and this free musical tradition, that he came from. That the "beat" is the alchemy and the very soul of this profound music.
NOTHING NEW !.......2006-11-18
Charles Lloyd the heir apparent after John Coltrane's death has been lost just about that length of time. He is a great tenor saxophone player but does not seem to have any real direction with his music. With out Trane's music to feed off of, charles's music has grown stagnant . He has had some brillant moment to be sure over the last 39 years since Trane's death but not enough !
In the key of OHM please........2006-07-27
I recall sitting in Golden Gate Park during the first Be-In. Charles Lloyd played a haunting melody on his saxophone which he called Forest Flower; that may have been the name of the Album? Unfortunately, short-term memory loss has me on that...
Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland comprise the trio on Sangam, the title of the CD. Sangam, according to the liner notes, which I copied is: a word of multiple definitions which signifies confluence, a meeting place, a gathering or coming together.
Creativity flows as they play from the heart of the universe.
Buy it if you love esoteric, gorgeous, floating sound. Bravo!
Perfect recording, perfect music making.......2006-06-06
There's nothing more to be said about ECM's engineering. It's perfect. That's it.
As for the music, nothing could be farther from the cheapness of our times, our trite absorptions, our fleeting fancies. Truly profound music-making, full of joy and sorrow admixed.
This is music that goes straight to the heart of worship. You needn't be religious (I'm not) to recognise, in this work, the unmistakeable scent of incense ascending to the heavens. It's a prayer, even if the One being prayed to is not external to the Ones doing the praying.
I'm going to play this one a hundred times over, not as background music to parties, but in the secret space of solitude.

Album Description
Ground-breaking collaboration between English composer Michael Nyman and three distinguished masters of Indian classical music, Sangam is a stimulating example of cross-pollination between Eastern and Western musical cultures. Warner Classics. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
A Minimalist (Not Glass) and an Indian Classical Master (Not Shankar).......2005-10-01
I have enjoyed Nyman's music ever since I obsessively watched The Draughtsman's Contract in the early 80's. I also enjoy Phillip Glass' music. I especially liked Passages (his album of mutual compositions with Ravi Shankar). When I saw this cd I was intrigued. It is quite different from the Glass/Shankar project. The singing by the Misras is a prominent part of the compositions. The final composition is co-written with U. Shrinivas, who plays mandolin on it; many people will know him from his work with John McLaughlin. Even though all the compositions are co-written, they are definitely in Nyman's style. I would give this album 5 stars for those already familiar with Nyman's work (especially those who also enjoy the music of South Asia). It may only be a 3 star album to those unfamilar with Nyman (his film scores are an easier introduction). 4 stars is my compromise.

Album Description
Accompanied by world-famous tabla master Ustad Tari Khan, Bangladeshi sitar virtuoso Alif Laila brings new emotion, drama, and dynamics to the classical music of India. Here, the duo crafts breathtakingly fresh interpretations of three centuries-old ragas. For over a decade Alif Laila has toured throughout the US and the Indian subcontinent, from the Smithsonian to the Shahid Minar National Shrine in Bangladesh. Tari Khan tours the Americas, Europe, and Asia and has appeared on over eighty records as well as on Hollywood and Bollywood sound tracks. Three weeks after this recording, he performed for Laura Bush under the auspices of the president of Pakistan. The CD's sound quality sets new standards of clarity for Indian music; Mapleshade's renowned, all-analog technology captures the full range of expression, from the most delicate touch of fingers on the strings to thunderous, full-force crescendos on the tablas.

Breathing Reeds -- Another Lovely, Moody ECM Voyage.......2007-03-19
Trygve Seim has emerged as a composer of note in Europe, and his music is entrancing. His ensembles of 10-12 musicians focus on reeds and horns, including several in lower registers -- from bassoon/contrabass bassoon, , tenor/soprano/bass saxophones, trumpet, accordion, clarinet/bass clarinet, trombone, and tuba. There is often and cello and percussion as well.
The music is seamless, rising and falling gradually, like the great seas. As another reviewer states, the entire album flows from track to track without seeming to change to a new composition. This may be a drawback for some -- there is not a strong sense of tension dramatically releasing within a short piece. The joy is in the breathy harmonies and subtle movement over the course of the pieces, and the subtly surging moments of transcendence that emerge.
This is not primarily improvisational music. So some will think of the music more as 'modern classical' than as jazz. Those who love the extraordinary, crystalline recordings of ECM ("Editions of Contemporary Music") will find enchanting sound and music here.
Seim's ensemble was enthusiastically received recently played at the 2007 Portland (OR) Jazz Festival, much of which honored Manfred Eicher's ECM label; ECM has just passed 1000 releases. Of this concert, critic John Kelman has written: "Is this jazz? ... Does it matter? Seim may not swing, but his unconventional group moves with a rhythm all its own. There's little that relates to the blues roots of American jazz, but there are plenty of blue colors all the same."
The others are better.......2005-10-27
Of the three cds that i have from these artists this is the one i like the least (New Cikadas being their best...much more in the real jazz idiom but with obvious nordic influences). This is much more 'mellow' and, to my ears, kind'a boring and predictable. Of course, the playing is good (professional )...but somehow it all comes across a bit 'new-agey'. And that is the kiss of death to me.
Bought this in February, and have worn the CD out.......2005-06-25
I bought 'Sangam' by chance, because Trygve Seim doesnt enjoy the same word-of-mouth here as people like Tord Gustavsen and Tomasz Stanko do. It's a real pity because, with due respect to the above artists, this is the most wonderful thing released in recent years, slightly ahead of such albums like Christian Wallumrod's 'A Year from Easter' and Jon Balke's 'Diverted Travels'.
The most noticeable thing about 'Sangam' is the fact that the nine pieces play like one long piece, even though only four of them ('Himmelrand i Tidevand') are linked. As quoted in 'The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD', in a review for Seim's 'Different Rivers', his interest is in the human breath. 'Sangam' is a work that shows the beauty of the capabilities of the human breath through acoustic instruments.
There is very little that one can say about such pieces as 'Beginning an Ending', 'Himmelrand i Tidevand' and pretty much the whole CD. I have found it very unlikely that I would just listen to one song on this CD. Sometimes I intend to, but before I know it, the whole CD has played, and it's not a short CD.
This is a CD that is definetely not for a limited variety of jazz fans, because it has such a large scope. I encourage classical fans to give this a try also, because it will definetely appeal to them. Of all the great CDs released in recent years, I love nothing more than this one.
