Rocksteady is pianist Monty Alexander's tribute to the late '60s and early '70s heyday of ska. No mere dalliance, Alexander is from Jamaica and came up through the club scene there before relocating to the United States and embarking on a career in jazz. A vital component throughout this album is guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who played on many of the key recordings produced by Coxson Dodd (including Toots & the Maytals, Derrick Herriot, Roland Alfonso, and many others). The dozen tracks pay homage to the era's key artists and composers. The album opens with the spry fun of Dave and Ansel Collins' "Double Barrel," one of the first Jamaican songs to become a hit in America, and closes with Bob Marley's richly emotive "Redemption Song." In between they play everything from "Confucius" by the Skatelites to "The Israelites" by Desmond Dekker. The sextet locks into each number, eschewing overdubs for an essential live groove. --David Greenberger

In 1999, Exodus was rightfully voted by the most important album of the 20th century by Time magazine. This is the visionary Bob Marley's masterpiece, a concept album that distills the myriad experiences of both our daily lives and collective unconsciousness into 46 minutes of aural perfection.
Exodus has been flawlessly remastered from the original recordings and showcases what is probably the Wailers' tightest recorded performance. The initial notes of the album's opening track, "Natural Mystic," fade up from a deep silence, giving the listener the impression that the music generates from within a continuum of the past, present, and future. The first half of Exodus bears witness to Marley's shift in focus away from the mundane problems of Babylon existence and toward a greater understanding of vital universal truths. The second half features songs such as "Jamming" and "Waiting in Vain," which take a gently wistful look at the more interpersonal aspects of human relations. --Rebecca Levine

Iconic! Simply unmissable!.......2007-06-07
I watched a TV documentary the other night about the making of this album and it was a spellbinding hour and a half. Apparently, Bob had to flee Jamaica for the UK after an assassination attempt and ended up living in London for a year. It was during this year that this phenomenal album was recorded. I've owned it for over 20 years now - first on cassette, then on vinyl and finally on CD - and I had no clue that this was so.
The album was released in 1977. It was the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee but Britain was in a very bad place, the seeds of Thatcherism and the heartless 80s had already been sown and Punk ruled the airwaves. I lived a very sheltered life as a teenager and so it wasn't until 1979 when I went away to boarding school, that I finally get to hear the album in its entirety. It was a true revelation. I heard it on (what was then) a new invention my peers and I called a "hi-fi system" owned by an older student and I remember hearing the percussion on "Jamming" and being transfixed. No exaggeration; I was literally hypnotised.
The album is faultless with pristine production by Bob and The Wailers. From the minute the first strains of "Natural Mystic" fade in, through the accusatory "Guiltiness", on to the revolutionary title track, the slow jams "Waiting In Vain" & "Turn Your Lights Down Low", on to the optimitic "Three Little Birds" and right to the end of "One Love/People Get Ready", there is not a single note out of place. Each song, a potential hit single, (7 of the 10 songs on the original album were actually hits here in the UK) has a vibrant, totally relevant message - especially for a black teenager living in 70s UK, and Bob's primary ethos of peace & love have stayed with me ever since. That being said, this is the album that began to open my young eyes to the oppression and injustice that already surrounded me. The idea that music wasn't simply for entertainment or escapism but could inspire thought, behaviour and attitude change as well as activism, was new and very appealing.
And this was also the album that turned Bob from an international reggae star into a global prophet. Setting everything about Rastafarianism (respectfully) to one side, Bob the man and the music he made, the message he spread, have always educated and enthralled me in equal measure and always will. When I think about what are for me, consummately iconic, influential and superb recordings and I think about such albums as Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, John Coltane's A Love Supreme, Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, Pink Floyd's The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered) and Radiohead's OK Computer, I also, immediately, think of Bob Marley's "Exodus". My life was definitely not the same after listening to it and now that I fully understand the story behind it, I hold the album in even higher esteem.
Whether this is Marley's best piece of work or not is, I guess, a matter of personal opinion and will always be open to debate. What is beyond doubt, is that it is my favourite Bob Marley album and I am proud and honoured to make this my 200th review on amazon.com. I'm a bit of a purist so I prefer the version I have which does not have the two extra tracks (though I have both on 12" single) but they are definitely worth having. As such, this is the version to get. There'll no doubt be a '30th anniversary edition' knocking around before too long as well.
Excellent album!.......2007-05-30
I'm not really a reggae fan, but I love Stevie Wonder. I thus decided to give Bob Marley a chance. I must say this album can really get you hooked on this kind of music. Songs are witty, rhythmic and memorable. It is one of the best albums to jog along with. Bob Marley is definitely one of the more interesting artists of recent times.
Bob Marley on TOP!!.......2007-03-27
I was living on the island of St. Thomas in 1977 when I first heard this recording. I was on a beautiful beach, drinking those powerful rum punch drinks. Someone played the first song, "Natural Mystic" and for me, it was like being transported to another time dimension. The musical cadence and beauty of the song just captured me. I was instantly hooked to Bob Marley's music. The entire album has a quality to it that has made it one of the true classics in music. Not one bad track on the entire set. Played with passion and love by one of the greats, the main "rude boy" himself, Robert "Bob" Marley.
My First Marley Album and Arguably the Best One!.......2007-01-14
From personal experience, I can say that if you are trying to get into Bob Marley, start with this album! Let me start out with this: A lot of people(and I used to be one of them) say that all of Bob's songs sound the same. I have learned, from actually listening to his songs thoroughly, that that is an ignorant statement. Yes, the guitar does sound the same on 98% of the songs. But I have come to learn that the guitar in Reggae is just like the drums are in others genres of music; it keeps the beat. If it didn't sound like it does in every song, then it WOULDN'T be Reggae. The appreciation comes when you listen to how the song is built up around the guitar part; the horns, the keys/piano, and especially the BASS.
Now that I've said my part, I'll talk about the album. This is, from start to finish, an excellent album. If I were to be completely honest, it took a long time for it to grow on me. But once it did, it became my favorite Bob album. It is so emotional, and it contains my second favorite Bob song "Waiting in Vain." This album is also special because I believe that this was the first recording on which Marley knew he had cancer and was dying. To make music with this much passion and make your 5 best albums(Exodus-Confrontation) AFTER you know that you have cancer deserves a hell of a lot of admiration if you ask me. Anyway, don't take my word for it, buy this album. If you don't like this one, chances are you won't really like any other Bob Marley. But if you do like this, every recording after this one is also excellent. This is not to say that all the pre-Exodus albums aren't good, but they are very different than this one.
In short, if you are trying to get to know Bob Marley's music, you should:
1)Know how to appreciate Reggae music
2)Start with this album, and if you like it, then
3)Buy any/all albums AFTER this one (Kaya-Confrontation)
4)Then move on to the ealier albums
One of Marley's best.......2006-11-20
You'll need this album, along with Burnin' it's Bob Marley's best. So Much Things to Say is a throwaway. The rest? Natural Mystic; the Heathen and Guiltiness are all good. But everything from the militant-yet-danceable title track on is pure gold. As I have mentioned, I love the title song; Jammin' is a classic, and possibly my favorite Bob Marley song; though Waiting in Vain, the perfect love song, gives it a run for its money. You don't hear much about the sexy slow jam Turn Your Down Lights Low, a damn shame since it alone is worth the price of the disc even if you have a greatest hits. And if you can resist smiling after hearing Three Little Birds and One Love/People Get Ready, you're obviously jaded, cynical and have lost all faith in humanity (I'm not QUITE there yet). It's too bad they didn't include Punky Reggae Party on the normal album, instead sticking it on as a bonus track, since it's arguably better than any songs on the normal album - no mean feat, let me add! Make sure to buy this ASAP.

One Love, a remastered retrospective of poli-spiritual musical icon Bob Marley's major-label work completed before his 1980 death from cancer, may well replace 1984's Legend as the best-selling reggae album of all time. One Love is 20 cuts to Legend's 16, a set that plays in chronological order of release as opposed to party mix. As with the latter, One Love presents the sweet organ-driven and feedback-scarred live version of "No Woman, No Cry" as well as album versions of classics like "I Shot the Sheriff," "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Jamming." Single versions of "Buffalo Soldier" and "Exodus" sidle up to the full-band cut of "Redemption Song" and the soulful Marley/Curtis Mayfield medley, "One Love/People Get Ready." A fine sampler of the Tuff Gong years from 1972's Catch a Fire and onward, One Love is aimed at the casual Marley fan rather than the hardcore completist, though its final track is indeed a rarity: the Marley-penned, Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced "I Know a Place." A moving ballad-styled anthem of solidarity and freedom, it was recorded in 1977 and is unavailable on any other Bob Marley & the Wailers album. One Love gives clear evidence of why Marley's legacy endears and endures nearly a generation after his passing. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Good, But Left Out Important Songs........2006-06-24
Good, (well all Bob Marley is good) but I still have that feeling from what I got 5 years ago when it was released that they left out some very important songs, yes I am delighted that they have put "So Much Trouble In The World" on it as it is a flawless song, but reasons why they have left out "Satisfy My Soul" and the oringinal "Redemption Song", still leave me saying why.
I do like how they have put it in year order, and have included a song off each album, apart from Babylon By Bus, well they just had to put on "No Woman No Cry" of Live, so I will let them off.
"Roots Rock Reggae", is another great song deserving a place on this album, but maybe "War" or "Positive Vibration" to replace that, or to add on to it.
"Coming In From The Cold" deserves every right to be on Legend and this, it is just an amazing song and has had not enough credit for it.
Otherwise that, it is a strong album, and worth the money.
A good purchase.
Forget "Legend" this is the Best Bob Marley Compilation that's Out There!.......2005-12-31
For many years, "Legend" was the only truly great compilation of this man's life's work but if you don't already have that album or if you are new to Bob Marley and want to find out what all the fuss is about, this hard-to-find version is really the best that there is. 20 great track selections and one track, the last one, that's not even on any other Marley album and most importantly of all, the sound quality is brilliant! Too many albums use the "remastered" claim too easily and sometimes even falsely to get you to "upgrade" from the album you already have but this is not one of them as this disc has been remastered to perfection. If you are not too wild about "live" performances just like me, then don't worry too much about the more expensive 2-disc version as this great one-disc version will more than suffice. Great track selections, great sound quality, great value for money, this is THE Bob Marley one-disc compilation album to get. Highly recommended!
An excellent, underrated Marley compilation.......2005-12-01
One Love. A Bob Marley hits compilation.
INTRODUCTION:
Bob Marley. Over the years, he has reigned supreme as the ultimate name in reggae music. Despite passing away in the early eighties, his music remains consistently popular. And it isn't hard to see why, as it really does stand the test of time. Despite dying young, Marley's career contained a plethora of music, and as such, many compilations of his work have been released over the years. The most popular compilation of Marley's work, though, would have to be the Legend compilation, released in the middle of the eighties. However, Marley has a number of other, lesser-known compilations. How does the lesser-known One Love measure up? Keep reading and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Bob Marley's One Love compilation was released in 2001. The compilation features twenty tracks, spanning many years of Marley's career.
REVIEW:
Bob Marley has a LOT of compilations, no questions asked. None of these compilations are bad, by any means. In fact, every one of them seems to succeed in areas that others don't. Legend is the best-known of all of Marley's compilations, and it isn't hard to see why. It was a single-disc, affordable compilation that hits all of the high points of Marley's career. However, just because Legend is the all-around best-known and most widely revered of all of Marley's collection does not mean it is the best one. One Love is an underrated gem of a hits compilation. For the most part, the tracklist is similar to Legend, but there are some changes. The set drops one track from Legend, Satisfy My Soul, and adds seven others. Also, this compilation uses the full-band version of Redemption Song, rather than the acoustic one that was featured on Legend. The order of the tracklist also got a total revamp. While Legend featured a non-chronological running order that was well suited for it being a "party" album of sorts, One Love uses a chronological order. I have always preferred chronological retrospectives in that they show you how the artist evolved over the years, and it works excellently for Bob Marley. Granted, some people may prefer the non-chronological running order of Legend, and it's not hard to see why they do, really.
OVERALL:
No matter which Bob Marley hits compilation you buy, you'll get a damn fine overview of his career. If you're just the casual Bob Marley fan who wants an affordable, single-disc overview of his career, you have come to the right place. Despite not being as well-known as Legend, this set is nothing less in the quality department. If you're a casual fan or just someone who is seeking an affordable yet effective introduction to the music of Marley, this is just what you need. Highly recommended!
EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, because this compilation is not as well-known as the classic Legend compilation, it is not as readily available. For that reason alone, you may want to go with the single-disc remastered version of Legend. Still, if you can find One Love, it is a worthwhile set.
Thank you.......2005-09-08
I didn't get the cd as quickly as I expected but when I did I didn't have any complaints! Thank you
Is this a bootleg?.......2005-06-28
Okay, here is the major problem with this release: it is not a TuffGong/Island release. The Marley family has struggled with this reality for a long time. Because Bob's music has become so widespread and lacks the legal protections that American and European recording artists have enjoyed for decades, his recordings have gone onto the cheap market (flea markets, push carts, gas stations, etc-and now Amazon). Buying One Love only serves to strengthen these sleazy record companies and hurts reggae artists and the Jamaican economy. Look closely at the albums before you buy them. Find out what label has produced them and try to stick with TuffGong when possible.

It has two classic cd's put together and fits in with some of the best reggae artists ever such as Bob Marley, Sublime, and so on.
great stuff.......2005-08-13
Classic Toots! This is as good as it gets from the old Jamaican reggae. Don't pass on this one.
Awesome.......2003-10-23
Toots is like a Jamaican Marvin Gaye and James Brown rolled into one. His voice is so real and every note is sung like his life depends on it. How you can listen to this album and not want to shake your a** is beyond me. It is virtually impossible to be sad and listen to this album at the same time. Always an uplifting experience even when he's singing about being broke or being in jail.
Two reggae classics restored to their original glory.......2003-05-13
Having debuted as a ska outfit in the early 60s, the Maytals eventually found success in mid-decade via a Jamaican song festival competition (at which their song "Bam Bam" took first place), and a string of successful singles recorded with legendary producer Leslie Kong. Following Kong's untimely death in 1971, the Maytals found themselves renamed Toots & The Maytals and recording with Kong's former arranger and sound engineer, Warwick Lyn. The resulting pair of albums, 1972's "Funky Kingston" and 1973's "In the Dark," are perhaps the best -- and certainly the most accessible -- albums recorded by one of reggae's artistic pillars.
"Funky Kingston" includes signature songs like "Pomp and Pride," "Redemption Song" and the title track, along with the band's hear-it-to-believe cover of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie" and a spellbinding take of Ike & Tina Turner's "I Can't Believe." Frederick "Toots" Hibbert sings with a soulfulness unmatched in reggae, equal parts Otis Redding and Ray Charles, and with bandmates who can provide both call-and-response gospel and sweet harmony singing. Instrumentally, the band pulses with deep, hypnotically grooved tracks, crackling with the kinetic energy of their early years.
"In the Dark" strips the band's sound of the overdubbed horn section, and digs deeply into their reggae roots. Hits include the title track, along with "Time Tough," and the prison-time inspired (and James Brown styled) "54-46 Was My Number." The Maytals second hear-it-to-believe-it cover, this time reworking John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads," is a marvel of reggae soul. It's nearly impossible to remember Denver's treacly original after spinning the Maytals' rendition.
This two-fer brings together both albums' original U.K. track listings and running orders for the first time on a U.S. release. In contrast, the 1976 U.S. issue of "Funky Kingston" distilled the ten tracks of "Funky Kingston" and twelve tracks of "In the Dark" (plus "Pressure Drop" from the soundtrack of "The Harder They Come") to a scant ten track total. With the inclusion of "Pressure Drop" as a bonus on this collection, listeners weaned on the U.S. original can restore its original track order by programming 12, 10, 7, 17, 3, 2, 9, 15, 21, 20. Not that you're likely to want to after listening to these albums in their original glory.
Bob Marley may have become the prophet's face of reggae, but these two classic albums demonstrate plain and simple: Toots & The Maytals were as large a part of the music's soul as anyone. Period.

Toots Hibbert is often compared to Otis Redding, and since Hibbert was greatly influenced by classic American R&B as well as the music of his own Baptist church, that comparison is certainly apt. But while he owes a debt to the intense, high-octane vocal approach of Redding, there is also a great deal of similarity between Toots and the great James Brown. In many ways and at roughly the same time, Hibbert did for Jamaican soul what Brown did for its American cousin--he made it funky and nasty! One listen to the chunky guitar riffs underneath and Hibbert's repetitive vocal chants on top of 1968's "Do the Reggay" and this much is clear: while the energy of ska remains, the deep groove has become supreme ruler. This awesome collection goes back to an early Prince Buster-produced single from 1964 and follows the Maytals--and with them, the history of Jamaican pop--from sweet-harmonizing, horn-driven ska to steadfast rock steady to archetypical roots reggae. And don't forget that Hibbert wrote 18 of these 19 jewels himself (there's one Redding cover here), showing himself to be highly effective with both topical tunes and cheerful rave-ups. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Really great music.......2006-12-07
I had never listened much to reggae in the past but this cd has made me a true believer. Toots and his group have made music that is wonderful and timeless. This is easily the best cd that I have purchased in a long time and will highly recommend it to anyone.
Not the Best Collection.......2006-05-30
While this is a very good collection, the double CD "Time Tough" includes all the tracks here, but does a better job of covering the whole Toots spectrum, and the sound quality is quite a bit better. So while I agree with the positive reviews here, you get a lot more bang for the buck with "Time Tough". And TT gives you a lot more of his latter work, when love and spirituality infused his work and raised reggae to a higher plane. Go on and spend the extra $10, you won't be sorry (like I was when I bought this then still had to go out and buy "Time Tough" to get a sampling of ALL the Toots and the Maytals I came to love through buying most of his LPs in the 70's and 80's.
Toots & the Maytals Rule!.......2006-04-19
I was lucky enough to see both Bob Marley & the Wailers and Toots & the Maytals on the same double bill at the Beacon Theater in NYC back in the '70's. Until then I had heard neither. While Bob Marley was phenomenal. He did more with simply folding his arms than most rockers do flailing all around the stage & smashing guitars. But the true revelation was Toots & the Maytals. They didn't stop until they rocked the house. Listening to this "Best of" collection brings that night home to me. If you've never experienced Toots & the Maytals, buy this collection, and give it a listen. You won't stop dancing and swaying. I promise.
Essential for any Reggae Collection.......2005-04-24
This is an exceptional summary of one of the great pioneers of Reggae music, Toot and the Maytals. The song included here, DO THE REGGAY, has even been credited with giving the music it's name. Toots Hibbert and his compatriots created some of eary Reggae's great highlights including 54-46 WAS MY NUMBER, PRESSURE DROP, MONKEY MAN and SWEET AND DANDY. This collection shows the versitily of the Maytals to include raw Ska (BROAWDAY JUNGLE, BAM BAM), funk(FUNKY KINGSTON) and Memphis soul(REGGAE GOT SOUL and the great cover of Otis Redding's I'VE GOT DREAMS TO REMEMBER). THE VERY BEST OF TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS is a great introduction to one the the giants of Reggae music.
Not a good choice for someone interested in reggae.......2004-08-07
This disc deserves only 3 stars for the following reasons. The sound is deficient, so that it doesn't allows to enjoy the music performed by Toots an the Maytals. It is my first disc of this musician and it isn't even pionner in reggae or ska music, the discs sound very trivial and the music has not good beats. If you are finding something different, definitely, this is not the choice.

Amazon.com essential recording
When Bob Marley and the Wailers recorded their legendary 1975 London gig, little did they know of its lasting power. From the opening shuffles of "Trenchtown Rock" to the rabble-rousing "Get Up, Stand Up," this brief recording captured Marley's combo of critical invective and languid musical power. The rhythm team of Aston and Carlton Barrett make time-keeping splendidly melodic as Marley's gently scouring voice gets woven in with his backup vocalists in a mellowly dazzling display. On fire, the band jumps into the discovery of its power without regard to keeping the songs tidy or reflective of anything other than the moment of execution. No matter the years between its original release and the present, this recording will always breathe. Between Live! and the later, longer Babylon by Bus, Bob Marley showed categorical know-how in the art of executing state-of-the-art performances in the era of arena rock's supremacy. --Andrew Bartlett

The real deal.......2006-04-25
This live album from Bob Marley and his band The Wailers was my introduction to Bob Marley and reggae music in general. It promptly turned all preconceived ideas I had about reggae inside out. From that moment on, I was a believer. The first time I saw this album, I was thinking to myself, "Reggae, what's so special about that? It all sounds the same, anyway." How wrong I was!
First of all, the sound is spectacular. This performance sounds clean, fresh and lively; as if it were recorded yesterday. Every little thing can be heard clearly. Even so, it's not so clean that it becomes sterile and lacking in character. There's still the energy and authenticity that gives a concert something special.
Secondly, this album has all the classic songs to make it worthwhile as an introduction to Bob Marley's music and indeed reggae in general. Just check the track listing.
Also, the versions of the songs to be found here are fantastic and each musician is really impressive. Anyone who says that reggae is formulated, boring or predictable has yet to give this album a chance. This version of The Wailers has a real western/rock oriented approach to the music and it's really easy to hear why they have begun to appeal to a rock audience. Besides, the playing is fantastic and has plenty of feeling.
You shouldn't any more reasons to buy this album. It is just plain fantastic and made a staunch believer and convert out of me.
YOU MAY ONLY NEED ONE BOB MARLEY CD IN YOUR COLLECTION.......2006-02-07
If that is the case, then let it be this one. Myself, I enjoy Bob Marley for what I see as therapeutic purposes. Chill control. That guy is the most chill guy that there ever was, mon. Don't be knocking. Only an A-hole would bring disrespect down. Personally, my collection has TWO Bob Marley Cd's. This one here and the earlier release CATCH A FIRE. I know I'm missing lots of hits and what not, but, man... dig this record. The hits mean nothing after this one. THIS IS THE GREATEST... its live, yeah, don't think twice about it. These are by far the most passionate versions of every one of the songs on here. This is the absolute best material he ever put out. NO WOMAN NO CRY... awesome, puts tears in my eyes...BURNIN AND LOOTIN... killer, studio version has nothing on this one... BELLY FULL.. way better than the studio... you get the picture so far? The album may not be as long as say LEGEND... but as a whole, this is quality, not quantity.. this album is just right.
4.5 Stars.... Marley's (commercial) breakout album.......2005-12-24
Bob Marley was making critical waves but not until the release of "Live" in 1975 did he also break through commercially.
"Live" (8 tracks, 45 min.) was re-released in 2001 with a remastered sound and one bonus track. The energy is bustling throughout, starting with the opener "Trenchtown Rock". The band is in top form throughout. This album of course includes the mega-hit "No Woman, No Cry", released as a single and enormously successful. But there are some other great jems, such as "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Get Up, Stand Up". The bonus track, not found on the original (vinyl) album, is an equally outstanding "Kinky Reggae".
It is obvious that this is a milestone album in the Markey catalogue. But I still have to wonder why, to this day, the entire show of this legendary London July, 1975 concert hasn't been released. And in my book (which is of course a subjective feeling), the 1978 live album "Babylon By Bus" is even better.
Wail of a CD.......2005-12-22
If you don't have any of Bob Marley & the Wailers music and you're thinking of getting some, (STOP) right here, This Marley CD is the only one you'll need. Outstanding Live performance.
Insert "Lively Up Yourself pun here.......2005-11-23
Marley's studio work has always bugged me a tiny bit. I mean, the two albums of his I've heard (Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration) are both solid works, but I don't really like how he insists on dragging so many early tracks back into the fray. I also find myself scratching my head whenever he involves Rastafari, seeing that I am not a Rasta.
But this live album, it's a whole different story. The setlist isn't really all that creative (Other than Kinky Reggae and Burnin' `n' Lootin', anyway), but that's what's good about it-just a bunch of Bob Marley classics, no more, no less. Trenchtown Rock is one of his early songs. As I mentioned before, I usually don't care for most of them, but this is really an exception! Then there's Lively Up Yourself, which puts a whole lotta enegy into the album. An instantly catchy riff and lyrics about either a) sex, b) partying or c) riots (depend on who you talk to), this is definetly a classic!
The second side does a heckuva job in lining up Bob's three best-known songs (in my opinion, anyway). First, we have this album's resident classic, in the form of No Woman No Cry. If the only version of NWNC we had was the Natty Dread take, I'm sure the song would've been forgotten. But this, to use an enormous cliché, immortalizes it.
Another good tune is I Shot the Sheriff, one of the best-known reggae tunes ever composed. Doing away with the funkiness of the original, we instead get a swaggering organ riff and great backup singers. And, of course, there's Get Up Stand Up. This one's sang almost like a rap, only about fifteen years before rap sadly became mainstream. In the meantime, this is a good song.
Lastly, we have bonus track Kinky Reggae. A light-hearted romp about sex and ganja, it eventually evolves into a loose jam and an introduction of the band. The song is great, and will stay in your head forever, even if it's been weeks since you've heard it last.

The Name Says it All.......2004-11-10
Their voice is very melodious. Every song they sing is like a lullaby. The Melodians formed in 1965 at a local singing contest and made their recording debut for the legendary producer Clement "Coxonne" Dodd. Although some of their songs are remakes, they do have a beautiful voice that makes your feet shuffle, hips sway, and your thoughts clear. Whether they are still performing or not, these hits are a collector's item.
Reggae's got soul!.......2003-09-02
Toots proved as much in his own tune but the Melodians prove it on everyone of their tunes.

Ontario's Bedouin Soundclash has emerged as a young group refusing to be classified, while blurring the lines of reggae and rock. Look for them on the Vans Warped Tour this summer.

Reggae Folk Pop.......2007-01-11
What happens when you combine Folk, Pop and Reggae? You end up with Bedouin Soundclash. All of the songs have catchy hooks and choruses, so there is never really a "dead spot" on the CD.
If you are a fan of the old style Reggae, then this might just be a group for you.

AN ALBUM TO LISTEN TO AGAIN AND AGAIN.......2006-02-23
This is overall an amazing album. I purchased it a while ago after hearing When A Night Feels My Song on the radio. I was blown away by the consistency of the album. Every song is a hit single.
ALL RATINGS OUT OF 5
WANFMS - 5/5 what do you expect? Can never get tiresome
Shelter - 3/5 probably my least favourite song on the album
living in jungles - 3.5/5 solid song
money worries - 4/5 vernon buckley is a mad man
gyasi went home - 4/5 just go home gyasi
shadow of a man - 3.5/5 great rythym
jeb rand - 4.5/5 great vocals
criminal - 3.5/5 set up song for later
murder on the midnight wire 5/5 - my favourite song on the album
music my rock - 6/5 cancel that this is my favourite song
rude boy don't cry 4/5 - the album is almost over but don't cry

nothing to say - ending off strong
the rest of the songs are remixes so i wont review those. This is summer music at its best.

Funky Kingston.......2005-09-16
Kingston, Jamaica? No, mon, that'd be Kingston Ontario. As in Canada. As in wind chill, blizzards, and block heaters. And trust me, when Toots Hibbert sang about a "Funky Kingston" there was nobody getting the two towns mixed up. Yet as unlikely as it may seem - especially given the fact that Bedouin Soundclash played among all the trendy screamo bands on this summer's Warped tour - these Canuck kids do the reggae like they stepped straight outta Trenchtown.
"Sounding A Mosaic" was produced by Darryl Jennifer (of DC hardcore legends the Bad Brains), and he does an ace job of maintaining that sense of lazy space featured in all great reggae. Everything bobs, slinks, and hops with an unhurried, heavy-lidded pace, perfect for power-lounging on a tropical beach (or, given their citizenship, maybe a particularly muggy kitchen). Singer Jay Malinowski's voice resembles Bob Marley, but the band lays down grooves more similar to the reggae-lite of Jimmy Cliff, with a few overtones of dub and an appropriately distant element of Two-Tone ska. For extra cred, they do a version of the Maytones' "Money Worries" that features Vernon Maytone himself on vocals. Not that they needed the help, as the lead-off single "When The Night Feels My Song" is so feel-good melodic that Johnny Nash probably would've eaten his own head just to have it as a followup to "I Can See Clearly Now."
So it's Funky Kingstons now. As in two of them. As in who'da thunk? I guess it was inevitable that there'd be some pleasant trickle-down effect of rampant globalization.
Just like a mosaic: Simple when you look close but beautiful and complex as a whole.......2005-06-22
It's as simple as this: one beautiful voice, one single guitar playing hypnotic reggae clean riffs, one inspired bass line (the album is produced by Bad Brains bass player Darryl Jennifer) and drums that you can't almost notice on some songs that almost seem like some acoustic roots reggae and have much more importance on drum and bass tracks giving a refreshing beat to this album.
BSC doesn't fall in the temptation of adding extra instruments or effects to make their album sound more eclectic, they stick to the ingredients above giving us the impression that they are talented and they don't need any cheap trick to make it more obvious.
They are great song writers: each song as its own story, the lyrics are wise, and as for the music, they manage to change the beat at the perfect moment, bring a catchy chorus so you don't get bored and find yourself listening to the whole CD begging for more.
I personnaly regret that the 2 remix songs don't bring much and somehow betray the global feeling of the album.
In addition to this album I would suggest Root Fire which is as solid as this one, not to be considered as a prequel to Sounding a Mosaic but as another beautiful "mosaïc" which confirms that these guys have their own style. If you don't know him, I would also suggest Patrice early albums :"Ancient Spirit" & "Lions EP"

The song "Latin Goes Ska" is worth the price of any cd alone. This record is the best compilation of true ska recordings in history. I might also suggest that it goes great with Operation Ivy.

Budget set - great music, cheapo presentation.......2006-11-09
You really can't argue too much with the price on this set, especially if you pick it up used. Buyers should be aware that in this case, "box set" just means a box is involved. There is no extensively-researched and lovingly written booklet, or even the inclusion of discographical details. You just get the dics in cardboard sleeves with artist, song title, and publishing info--nothing more. And the 50 songs on the Rocksteady set would fit onto two discs no problem, but are for reasons of "box set-ness" spread out over three discs. Not much of a reason to hang onto the thing, once the tracks are loaded on one's iPod.
Now, none of this has anything to do with the quality of the grooves, which is high. Enjoy
if not disgruntled, far from gruntled........2002-08-04
brilliant songs, great sequencing, can't beat the price. BUT BEWARE. when i ordered this new "remaster", i received the original 1998 release instead. the sound is flat and muddy, the mixes uneven. these priceless tracks cry out for remastering.

The Essential Wailers.......2007-04-28
I usually prefer simple, catchy songwriting--it holds up better to endless listenings than the looser, more experimental stuff does. Thus, while I won't deny that Magical Mystery Tour blew my mind when I first heard it, I reach for my copy of Rubber Soul much, much more often.
I own Legend. And I do appreciate that side of Bob Marley. But this early stuff is the truly ESSENTIAL Bob Marley and the Wailers. It's straight up, soul- and R&B- and ska-influenced reggae music. No long, natty dreads; no songs about cannabis; no references to Jah Almighty. Just sweet Jamaican soul music, along the lines of the Toots & The Maytals (but quite possibly even better).
The lyrics, too, are markedly different from Marley's later music. Instead of social consciousness and Rastafarian religion, you get - gasp! - humor. "Adam and Eve" is a hilarious example. He tells the whole story of the garden of Eden, straight from the Bible and with no embellishment, and then at the very end of the chorus he sneaks in the punchline: "And anywhere you go/Woman is the root of all evil/She was the first one to take the fruit/And everyone of us is living in sin." Who knew Bob was so witty?
If you like simple and catchy songwriting as much as I do, you need to give this collection a spin. Everybody knows that after Americans invented rock and roll, the British took it, perfected it, and spit it right back. It turns out the Jamaicans did it too. Why so few people realize this fact (as evidenced by there being only one review of this CD prior to mine) is a mystery to me.
P.S. - I mainly wrote this review for reggae newbies like me, but here's a fact that will interest hardcore reggae/dub fans: nearly 4/5ths of the material on this compilation was produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry.
Excellent overview of early Bob Marley & The Wailers! Excellent Quality and Sounds!.......2006-03-13
I have alot of Bob Marley, or I thought I did. I mean I have all of his Tuff Gong/Island records including live records. I have 2 Trojan era albums called Soul Rebels and African Herbsman. I have the box set as well. And for a quick overview for the car, Gold has replaced both Legend and Natural Mystic the Legend Lives On. But when I got this 2 disc set I was amazed and how much Marley I was not familiar with.
Everything here is pre-Tuff Gong from 1970 up to about 1973, which a few extra tracks up through 1978. You'll find both Leslie Kong produced tracks as well as Lee "Scratch" Perry produced tracks as well. Many of these tracks are on the two early albums mentioned above (Soul Rebels and African Herbsman) but the sound quality is top notch and the combination here is the key!
A friend of mine got Legend as a gift from me and told me he really liked it but that was all the Bob Marley he would ever need because it had all the big hits. I asked him as a favor to check out The Essential Bob Marley & The Wailers and he LOVED it! He couldn't believe how much he liked the entire thing. And that was my plan all along, to introduce him to the Jamaican singles as opposed to the more rock-oriented mid to late 70's stuff that almost everyone is familiar with from the radio.
I asked him: Aren't you glad I didn't listen to you? And he said yes, I'm very glad! I like this earlier stuff just as much or even better. Now, that's personal preference ofcourse but atleast these early tracks are right up there with the more popular ones, if not even better.
And the best part of all is that you get to hear the whole band! Not just Bob Marley & The I-threes. Later more popular albums after Catch A Fire and Burnin' no longer have Peter Tosh or Bunny Wailer on them. Instead you have the I-three's, which is nice and has it's definite place. But if you really want to hear "Bob Marley & THE WAILERS" check out this double album. You'll be pleased. It makes a fine addition to ANY Bob Marley collection. And if it's the only thing you ever bought, it stands on it's own.
Final Note: I noticed many of these tracks are also found on Trenchtown Rock Anthology 1969 - 1978 as well. That set has more songs (51 instead of 35) and is missing atleast 1 key song from this set called "Soul Almighty". While there are many songs in common there are quite a few songs that are different and compliment one another. I plan on checking out that album as well.
