Saxophonist and bandleader Jay Beckenstein was a master of the smooth jazz sound before the genre had a name. He hasn't lost his touch on this outing, but it's clear that his bandmates--guitarist Julio Fernandez and bassist Scott Ambush--are also learning the art of crafting a pop instrumental hook. Compositions by the former, "Bump It Up" and "Close-Up," and the latter's "Handheld" highlight this 13-song outing that finds the group firmly back in the smooth jazz pocket after being a bit more adventurous on their last album. Songs from perhaps the band's best writer, Tom Schuman, are conspicuously absent, but he makes up for it with a couple of stunning piano solos, particularly on the not too dark, "Film Noir." The vibraphones of former permanent recording member, David Samuels, used to define the sound of Spyro Gyra, and whenever he makes a guest shot the old '80s Spyro Gyra comes out. But with other voices emerging, Spyro Gyra is becoming a less predictable unit, and they're headed in a good direction, which is important for a group with a quarter century of history behind them. --Mark Ruffin

The initial effort in what's become an ongoing collaboration between filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore and composer Ennio Morricone (in this instance assisted by his son Andrea) remains one of the Italian musician's most internationally beloved works. The bittersweet tale of a young boy's friendship with the local cinema projectionist and the profound, almost magical influence the movies have on both their lives won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and netted Morricone a BAFTA (U.K. equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Score. In the late '90s, the music also received one of America's other great "honors"--it was adapted for a car commercial! The score is among Morricone's most elegant and memorably melodic, effectively evoking a rich cinematic legacy; it's a virtual musical love letter to the power of films and their music. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Cinema Paradiso is Not Paradiso for All.......2007-05-13

I adore the music of Ennio Morricone in any shape or form. I prefer his more emotional soundtracks like "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly" and "The Mission." This CD has its moments but not enough to suit my tastes. I've never seen this film but knowing Morricone and his mastery of musical emotionality I don't believe this movie would have been my cup of tea. It is still Morricone the Maestro of the movie soundtrack just a little weak in spots for me. For a audio delight buy the Ennio Morricone Anthology a truly great listen.

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-03-09

I love this soundtrack. Really beautiful. Of course the same two themes are repeated over and over but who cares?

5 out of 5 stars 20 years later and I still want Toto to be with Elena.......2006-09-26

When the Italian film made waves I was still a schoolgirl but it did make me want Toto and Elena to be together back then and now. This soundtrack is haunting and draws out the intense longing and yearning for a love long lost ... and the marks of our youth that propell our creative destinies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks!.......2006-07-15

This is the soundtrack for the award winning Cinema Paradiso, a brilliantly photographed cinema treasurer. This is one of the most beautifully written scores that fits the movie perfectly. I strongly recommend seeing the movie and experience Cinema Paradiso!

4 out of 5 stars Soft and pleasent melodys.......2006-01-15

The soundtrack of "Cinema Paradiso" is one of the charming ones, I have ever heard. The soft, delicate sounds of music which were created to tell the magnificent story-line, realy capture the heart of this movie and make the characters alive once more.
I enjoyed this CD very much and I would continue enjoying it at the future, whenever I require quiet piano melodys to get me through the day.

5 out of 5 stars Bridges The Gap - From Soft Rock To Blues To Rap.......2006-12-29

With music ranging from soft rock to blues to rap, and artists ranging from Brandy to Busta Rhymes to Gladys Knight, there's something for everyone.

I loved the movie "Set It Off", and although it's been a while since I've seen it, I still enjoy all the fabulous music from it. The music was one of the things that really added to the film's flow. There are 14 terrific tunes, opening with the title song "Set it Off" by Organized Noize and featuring Queen Latifah. Brandy then combines with Tamia, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan for a touching rendition of "Missing You" paying tribute to sisterhood. You'll find several rap songs that even I enjoyed(Who woulda thunk it!). Busta Rhymes performs "Live to Regret" with added vocals by Mika. One of my personal favorites is Seal's soulful rendition of "Hey Joe", a great blues number that I used to enjoy by Jimi Hendrix. Other artists included are Simply Red, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Ray J(for a complete list of songs see the buying info, and you can also listen to samples here).

This edition has explicit lyrics(Product info ASIN:B000002HNF). There is an edited version available as well(enter: B000002HO1 into music search). It's a great album that you can listen to while getting through your work, driving in the car and I even like it for working out as the music ranges from tunes suitable for aerobics, yoga and cooling down!

Great music that can be enjoyed by all ages(If you can just get through the song "Sex Is On My Mind" without blushing). It sounds great on the stereo, and it isn't necessary to have seen the film to enjoy this music, but if you haven't I would recommend that also.

Thank you and enjoy.....Laurie

4 out of 5 stars These Are The Dayz Of Our Lives.......2004-06-06

The Set It Off soundtrack, as reviewer Garrard mentioned, is a great companion to the film. A Soundtrack's music is supposed to make you think and reminisce on the events of the movie and this one does just that. With amazing songs such as `Missing You' sung beautifully by Brandy, Tamia, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight; that makes you think of the heartbreaking ending, or En Vogue's `Don't Let Go' that makes you remember the love scene between Jada and Blair. Bone Thugs n Harmony drops arguably their best song ever in `Dayz Of Our Lives', which makes you remember when the four ladies were all together just having fun. Some other songs are good but they are just that...good songs that don't really fit the movie. Songs such as Angelic Wars, Live To Regret, Let It Go, and Name Callin are just good tracks used to fill up the cd. Not saying they are bad they just don't really fit. Overall this soundtrack is a must if you own the film. There are truly some amazing songs on the set. 3.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Up Against the Wind.......2003-11-15

The song "Up Againt the Wind" sung by Lori Perri is on the soundtrack by Christopher Young. You can find it in CDNow.com That's where I got mine. I looked all over the place for the lyrics to "Up Againt the Wind" but can't find them anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars An Obscure song.......2003-09-24

I did some research on the song that plays during Queen Latifah's character, Cleo's death scene. It's called "Up Against the Wind" by Lori Perri and can be found on the Original Motion Picture Score. Go to musiclandstation.com under soundtracks to order or find out more songs that did not end up on the original soundtrack for this wonderful movie. Hope this helps you..it helped me a lot!...

5 out of 5 stars Song Question..........2003-06-22

Does anyone know the name of the song played at the very end of the movie when Jada (Stony) is in her jeep driving up the mountain??? THanks

5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2007-04-22

These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.

Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.

The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.

Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".

A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.

The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07

Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.

Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.

City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2004-06-17

I have almost all the SG CD's. When I first got this one, I had my doubts. But after playing it a few times through, it is now one of my favorites...it stays in the CD tray. I just wish I could see them live here in Houston sometime.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD; possibly Spyro Gyras Best........2004-04-25

"Change is inevitable; Growth is OPTIONAL."

Those were the words of my favorite College professor. They immediately came to mind after reading some of the reviews of this CD.

All things MUST change. Everything. ESPECIALLY the music industry. The question is, will that change br good or bad? Well, "Original Cinema" by Smooth Jazz super group Spyro Gyra perfectly illustrates positive growth in my opinion. A change for the better. This is in keeping with their trend over the last few studio albums starting with "Got The Magic".

Prior to "Got The Magic" each album was an expression of a formula that was getting fairly dated and predictible. Face it; Spyro Gyra had gotton into a rut and their music sounded the same for years. Predictably the same. And while it was still entertaining, it definitely needed new life and a new direction. "Original Cinema" is a continuation of the change that started with "Got The Magic" and "In Modern Times" and each and every song on this new album is a winner.

On this CD all of the members of the band contribute to the whole, not only in their performances, but in the composition and arrangements as well. The end result is a collection of songs that still have that Spyro Gyra feel but with a new flavor... one that true Spyro Gyra fans can appreciate and enjoy.

This is a REALLY good CD; in my opinion their best. It has quiclky become my favorite from one of my favorite groups and if you listen in with an open mind you'll love it too. It really does represent POSITIVE growth for the band and I only hope they continue down this path for future recordings.

P.S: If you liked "Got The Magic" you'll LOVE Chuck Loebs post-DMP recordings with the lone exception of "Memory Lane" his last DMP album, which by the way, was EXCELLENT. He wrote/produced quite a few of the songs on that CD, and his influence helped result in a new and VERY pleasing sound for the band. Check out ALL of his Shanachee CDs for some really GREAT music.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta See It Live.......2003-09-17

I'll keep this short. I bought this CD when it was first released. After a few listens I wasn't overly impressed.
Then......I saw them do it LIVE a few weeks ago. It seemed obvious to me they held back in the studio and saved the best for the stage.
If you think this is a marginal effort then go see them perform it. You will come away with a new appreciation for the music. The music on this recording lends perfectly to a stage performance.

2 out of 5 stars lost the Magic.......2003-07-23

Unlike thier 1999 release'Got the Magic', 'Original Cinema' lacks the snap and the beat that charactorizes the Spyro Gyra style. 'Original Cinema' is departure in a different direction. They need to return to their 'style' rather than create a sound without definition.

4 out of 5 stars Best Spyro Gyra work in years.......2003-06-21

With its excellent production and good mix of up-tempo and slower tunes, Original Cinema is the best Spyro Gyra CDs in years. In fact, you have to go back to 1993's Dreams Beyond Control to find a more well-rounded Spyro Gyra CD. It features some of the traditional Spyro Gyra sound in tunes like "Bump It Up", "Party of Seven", and "Big Dance Number", good songs for Smooth Jazz Radio like "Close Up" and "Getaway", the mysterious "Film Noir" and the african sound of "Cape Town Love". I would highly recommend this CD to any true Smooth Jazz fan!

5 out of 5 stars Real Cinema -- really amazing.......2005-01-13

What makes SACD music special? Well, surround sound, of course. Also, amazingly high fidelity. Highs are crisper and bass is tighter. But no matter how good sonically an album sounds, if the music stinks, then you've wasted your money.

Well, that's not the case with Real Cinema. Besides being the best recorded SACD album I've heard, it's also the most enjoyable musically. I've listened to this album almost every day for the past 6 months. I know every note and yet, on a regular basis, I hear things I've never heard before. The stocatta of the guitar, the xylophone moving around the room, the bass riffs. And of course the sax.

If you own an SACD system, then you MUST own this album, as well as all the Spyro Gyra's available on SACD. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Great Recording.......2004-01-24

Original Cinema has shown the bold culture of Spyro Gyra. This is an album that must not be missed. In addition, I would like to recommend another Spyro Gyra album "In Modern Times". The most amazing track on this CD is Extrovertical. Again, SACD is superior here. Multichannel has added an extra joy in music listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect merge between Pontes and Morricone.......2005-06-11

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Ennio Morricone had known Dulce Pontes for many years, but he refused to work with her saying that her voice wasn't ripe.
Now we can see why... Morricone is a genious and managed to get the best out of Dulce.
It is an album full of emotions, either by the greatness of Morricone's music, either by the feeling that Pontes managed to transmit with her voice.
My favorite song is called "Amor a Portugal". It's a portuguese version of the "Your love", included in the portuguese edition as an extra track (number 16). It could become the Portuguese National Anthem.
As for the comment of one other review comparing Dulce Pontes with Celine Dion, I tottaly can't agree with that. At all.
Dulce Pontes is only showing the maturity in her voice.
And she's great doing that...

2 out of 5 stars Pontes fan disappointed.......2004-06-16

I have listened in amazement to Pontes pushing the boundaries of fado and folk genres on her prior CDs with her unique delivery and fantastic voice. Here she leaves those boundaries behind and goes off into Celine Dion territory--show off all your technical ability and the entire extent of your range in every single song. Kind of exhausting. On the other hand, if you like fireworks in every song, this one's for you.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond earthly realms.......2004-03-05

As cliched as it might sound, there are no words to describe either the talent of Dulce Pontes or the quality of this recording. This is one breathtaking singer, approximating the status of divinity on "FOCUS". For those lucky enough to understand the Portuguese lyrics, what a blessing; you may as well have discovered a new planet, a new world, particularly with regards to "Renascer" and "Voo". The inclusion of songs in English and Italian is a bonus.Dulce is so much more than a singer on this disc - she is life itself, in all its magical strains, in all its tortuous twists. Listen to "No Ano Que Vem" and you'll know what I'm talking about. No wonder that the album has done so brilliantly in Portugal and is now infiltrating countries such as Greece, Spain, Italy and Japan. Focus is a universal event, a celebration of that exquisite beauty which for so many of us remains a mere longing. Along Dulce's short career, this is the moment we've all waited for - now the world needs to discover it also. When I first heard this masterpiece, I felt that I was transcending, re-emerging, beginning to live all over again. Inevitably, Ennio Morricone must be mentioned - a great genius! The passion of his compositions remains unequalled - "A Rose Among Thorns" is testimony to the brilliance of both composer and singer. Through Dulce's miraculous imterpretation, Ennio Morricone's music must perforce become the new standard. I have been listening to the album for three days... and I feel like buying it again! Bravo, to two magical human beings perfectly poised on the wings of a wonder!

5 out of 5 stars Too much talent!.......2004-02-29

This is an impressive album where Dulce Pontes turned cinematic themes from the Morricone repertoire into songs in English, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and she is breathtaking in most of them. Dulce Pontes embellishes Morricone's compositions with an epic grandeur that few other singers could have achieved. Her voice is very potent and playful, subtle when necessary, blends gracefully with the music, and succeeds in recreating the absurdity, the nuances, and the overwhelming beauty of Morricone's eccentric musical temperament. My favorite songs are those in English, particularly "Your Love" (with music from Once Upon a Time in the West). Dulce's elegant venture into a Brazilian arrangement makes "Nosso Mar" another favorite of mine. Her best achievement, however, is probably "No Ano Que Vem", a song inspired by Jerusalem and set to the strangely upbeat music from the film Maddalena. Focus is a superb accomplishment in Dulce's career. In the end, one could not possibly deny her the classical stature of Ennio Morricone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-01-21

I listened this album over and over. I really loved all the songs, one of my favorites is "Cinema Paradiso", is absolutly beautiful. The voice of Dulce Pontes I think is one of the bigest voices. I really enjoyed this album, i hope you will enjoy this like me.

This review refers to the New Line Cinema Soundtrack(Edited Version) CD of "Set It Off"....

A great album that won't send either generation running for cover is one of the perks of this soundtrack. With music ranging from soft rock to blues to rap, and artists ranging from Brandy to Busta Rhymes to Gladys Knight, there's something for everyone.

I loved the movie "Set It Off", and although I haven't seen it for quite a while, I can still enjoy all the fabulous music from it. The music was one of the things that really added to the film's flow. There are 14 terrific tunes, opening with the title song "Set it Off" by Organized Noize and feautring Queen Latifah. One of my personal favorites is Seal's soulful rendition of "Hey Joe". A great blues number that I used to enjoy by Jimi Hendrix. Other artists included are Simply Red, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Ray J(for a complete list of songs see the buying info, and you can also listen to samples here.).

I have the edited version, which is my prefrence so I can turn it up and listen to it anytime with anyone, but the unedited version is also available here(explicit language) if you prefer.

It sounds great on the stereo, and it isn't neccessary to have seen the film(Rated R) to enjoy this music, but if you haven't I would reccommend that also.

Thank you and enjoy.....Laurie

    Album Description

A composer whose name is synonymous with all that is good about film music, Ennio Morricone has had a revolutionary impact on the way films are scored, especially in his most celebrated genre: the spaghetti western. Born November 10, 1928 in Rome, young Morricone studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he became an accomplished trumpeter.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine compilation, arranged by the Master himself.......2005-11-26

It seems that no one compilation captures all that's great about a musician, but this is probably the best Morricone compilation yet put out there. Morricone took several of his most beautiful film scores and arranged them for these performances, many of them for chamber-music formats. The standard Once Upon a Time themes are here, along with Gabriel's Oboe, Cinema Paradiso, and a gorgeous new arrangement from the Lolita soundtrack. Other greats to which I was introduced here include "Metti, Una Sera a Cena," "Rampage," and "Romanza." Even inadequate 30-second samples give a glimpse into the great beauty of these works. Disc 1 actually is the same as another Milan release, "Ennio Morricone: Film Music," but for a few dollars more (heh heh) you can get a fuller overview and further glimpse into his musicality on disc 2. Highly commendable.

5 out of 5 stars A little repetitive, but great........2006-03-22

The one I bought had a different cover, but the same tracklist. It's nice to hear extended versions, as well as previously unreleased tracks.

My only gripe with the score is the slight clipping on some of the tracks, and this is the case with every recording that I have heard.

This is a great score, and along with the solid performances by the actors, makes the film great.

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME! MUSICAL PERFECTION! 10 STARS NOT ENOUGH........2005-04-06

Ennio Morricone's score for Cinema Paradiso is inspired. There is, in my opinion, no more perfectly-suited score for a film. I purchased the original DRG version as soon as possible after seeing the film. The great thing about this "newer" version is that is features additional tracks--the more the better, in this case. Melodic, sweet, nostalgic, and lyrical. The absolute best of Morricone, universally acclaimed, and among the favorites of the composer's admirers [and there are legions]. A wonderfully engaging listening experience apart from the film.

One of my favorite selections [that may not be an obvious choice for many] is the medley that underscores the movie-reel montage, where the composer takes the main theme and plays it in different styles, including dixieland, swing, and lush-romantic. The love theme, co-composed by the Maestro's son Andrea [then a budding composer], is almost too beautiful. This is music that sweeps you along, rising and falling at just the right moment.

This music has been widely emulated in commercials to evoke nostalgia for a time-gone-by. And, for good reason, it's just plain delightful.

ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL TOP 5 MORRICONE ON ANYONE'S LIST.

    5 out of 5 stars brilliant, premiere!.......2005-01-01

fast shipping from caiman_com, I ordered it during the Christmas holidays and received it right before the New Year's Eve. Far beyond my estimation! Besides, the most important thing is the soundtract. This CD has 23 tracts. I compared this one with another version: "Cinema Paradiso: Original Soundtrack Recording (1988 Film) [SOUNDTRACK]" and found out that the former one included all the tracts the latter had and much more than that. The price between these two version is very similar. That's why I bought this imported soundtract! The quality of the songs is perfect!

This CD is a great companian with the original movie! It will remind you of every sentimental scene in the film. Highly recommanded!
