Classical guitar lovers looking for a jazzier change of pace shouldn't be disappointed by Nylon & Steel, Manuel Barrueco's album of duets with Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, and Andy Summers. But ironically enough, it's the two solo tunes that bookend this disc, Barrueco's "Odeon" and his solo guitar arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Rodeo," that are the real highlights. His three cuts with Di Meola are a mixed affair, but the interplay between the duo seems to gel on the longer "Azzurra." Steve Morse's electric guitar is loaded with Bill Frisell-like effects, but on "Wolvesville," he and Barrueco create an inspired and unleashed fusion between rock and classical music (the inspiration for the piece is a Villa-Lobos étude). Three mellow collaborations with Summers round out this set of intriguing guitar instrumentals. --Jason Verlinde

An Oasis of quality music........2005-04-14

The tracks on this recording vary from exuberant latin-american jazz - like 'Beyond The Mirage'- to more introspective music like 'The Grand Passion'. 'Northern Lights'is very sensitive as well, it makes you a little bit melancholic. Between all the noisy dance-music we have nowadays, 'Nylon & Steel'is an oasis of quality and high standard.(Though there is no classical music played on this cd - apart from Villa-Lobos - don't let that spoil the fun). Something about this music reminds me of the piano-music of Brad Mehldau: it sounds familiar and at the same time it's something new.

This is a very interesting combination of the classical and rock/jazz worlds of guitar playing. All four guitarists have amazing chops and they're all quite tasteful on this recording. If you're a fan of Barrueco, DiMeola, Morse, or Summers, check out this CD. I had heard Barrueco and Summers before, and knew of DiMeola and Morse by reputation, so I had an idea of what to expect...but "Nylon & Steel" surpassed those expectations. Very cool, indeed.

A Disaster.......2001-09-08

Except for the two Barrueco solos, this CD made me nauseous!!!Listening to it reminded me why I stopped listening to most improvised music.

Throughout tracks 2 to 4, DiMeola struggles futilely to come up with anything but comical latin cliches. DiMeola's mindless noodling is an affront to Barrueco's musicality. Summers playing on the other hand, while somewhat musical, is mostly syrup.

Villa-Lobos' Etude 1 duet hurt the most. I have played this piece for years and, though an etude, I find it quite entertaining (as do most classical guitarists I think). During most of the piece, Morse simply plays scale-exercise filler and obliterates all the musical ideas in the piece. Listen, Villa-Lobos was one of the most original and masterful composers of this century. It is criminal to think that playing this electronic fluff over Villa-Lobos' etude does it justice.

Historical Snapshot.......2005-06-04

This CD is significant in that it is so far the only Heavy Organ performance to make it to CD. Virgil Fox's Heavy Organ tour did a lot to popularize classical organ music and bring it to a wider audience. Although the Rodgers "Black Beauty" touring organ sounds a bit dated by the standards of today's digital instruments, it was state of the art for analog organs in its day. So the sound might not knock your socks off, but this is as close as you'll get to imagining what it must have been like to see Fox live at the peak of his popularity.

Hard to take.......2003-02-02

This is not the best Virgil Fox CD- the Rodgers Touring organ is unable to perform at the level of larger organs. I recommend earlier recordings of Virgil Fox's in his Aeolian-Skinner 5-manual at Riverside Church, NY. That aside, this is still Fox, and is reason enough to buy this CD.

Has not aged well.......2002-11-17

I grew up on Virgil Fox. But this CD really butchered the performance. The old vinyl Heavy Organ series was actually cleaner sounding, had less of Fox's peculiarities and over-talk. A disappointment.

The "Fox Style" of Bach playing.......2000-11-03

This recording was originally issued as Volume 2; another Heavy Organ at CArnegie Hall album was made a year before this one and hopefully will be reissued on CD at some point. This album is a good example of Virgil Fox's approach to Bach's music. One hears kaleidoscopic registrations (a performance trademark of Fox's that was always controversial) and a dramatic, fiery style of playing. There are fewer quiet works on this album -- one, the final St Matthew Passion chorus, really doesn't come off well due to the overused tremolo and an articulation that doesn't allow the music to flow well. But I think the best track on the album is the shortest: Fox's performance of "Rejoice, Beloved Christians", shows phenomenal technique and lightning speed, yet is utterly delicate and graceful -- a rendition that is simply unassailable. The Wedge Prelude and Fugue, though containing some mistakes, is a very dramatic and noble interpretation. This record is far, far superior to Fox's first Heavy Organ album from Fillmore East, which suffers from numerous wrong notes and mistakes.

Legendary Organist gives Legendary live performance.......2000-01-14

Want to hear a performer really communicate with his audience? This is the CD for you. A diverse and impinging introduction to the music of J.S. Bach, as well as Virgil's musical stylings, make this CD a must-have for anyone interested in classical organ, Bach, or how to give a successful live performance of classical music. Although the crowd's boistreous enthusiasm occasionally interrupts the flow of the show, there isn't a single bad cut on the entire album.

Superb sax.......2000-11-02

Michael Paulo has a very special style...the tunes on this album are just superb. I first heard one of Michael's tunes on Smooth Jazz 94.7 The wave (here in LA), I liked it so much that I immediately bought this album. All the tracks are excellent. I particularly like "Heart of mine!", "Forever" and "Struttin with mama mae". This album is a must have.

Best sax release of the year. Millennium Swing does just that. Very passionate CD. I can't stop listening to it. It's been a while since the release of My Heart & Soul but well worth the wait.

The much acclaimed and award winning debut CD by Thomas Raniszewski, (rani-chev-ski), is not only a fine tribute to Thomas' musical talents, but should be an inspiration to independent artists. For Raniszewski has shown that talent gets attention, independent or label, talent makes difference. It is always exciting to see exceptional aptitude accepted and recognized. In addition to being a great listen, selections from Tommy's "A Midnight At A Time" have been very successfully used in guided imagery mediation and relaxation therapy sessions. Obviously "A Midnight At A Time" satisfies a broad spectrum of listeners and fans.

Ten generous tracks complete this first sampling of Thomas Raniszewski music. A pop-new age influence combines with nuance from classic and majestically scored film and stage scores. Pensive and touching lyrics are joined with music which carries its own message creating an enlivened experience of musical sensation. Indeed Thomas' music has staying power as endearing melodies linger and find home. Vocals and accompaniment are truly complimentary and the unique joining is just a portion of the Raniszewski touch.

This is a stay and enjoy CD. While "A Midnight At A Time" fares very well at gatherings, I get the greatest enjoyment when I am able to just enjoy. In track number five, "At Dorothy's Fantastic Seaside Arcade" The visual empowered piece brings lively images to mind with a strength reminiscent of various works in the rock opera "Tommy". I loved this album from the first song I heard. The music is very moving and beautiful. The instrumentals are outstanding. The performers he chose were acceptional. The Christmas cut "Through a Childs Eyes" was by far the most moving piece and should be made into a Christmas Classic to be heard every year. This music is for all ages. You will not go wrong in buying this album for all your friends and relatives for any occasion or holiday.

This is an incredibly promising album from Raniszewski, who has assembled musicians and vocalists that make this creation soar. Poignant, solid, catchy, dreamy, surprising. This album will entice you again and again, and rewards subsequent listenings with even deeper layers of sound texture and emotional insight. Experiencing this already well-developed album, I look forward to more from Raniszewski in the future. A very worthwhile listening experience!

I first heard Marieann at the New York Mariott Marquee four years ago, and ever since I've been enamored with her voice. This CD has everthing from upbeat renditions of Broadway classics to amazing ballads. The pianist, bassist, and drummer on the album are phenomenal. Everything about this CD is perfect; don't hesitate to buy it or see her perform live!

I first heard Mareiann sing at a Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City a few weeks ago. (She is also with a group called Spiritus.) She was so powerful I had to talk to her and discovered she has a CD coming out in a few months. Then, the next day I discovered she already had an earlier CD out. She is really terrific. She has the confidence and power of voice that you only hear with really great vocalists. She exudes a grasp of the emotions of each song. I put her up there with Barbara Streisand as a powerful performerâ"really, give her a few years.... The Josh Groban of female singers! Or perhaps he is the Marieann Meringolo of male singers.... Bravo, Marieann!!!
