Editorial Reviews
New York Times
"Lynne Arriale's brilliant musicianship and bandstand instincts place her among the top jazz pianists of the day."

Product Description
Arise recently debuted on Billboard's Jazz chart at #17, #1 on Jazz Week Radio chart and #15 on the CMJ Jazz chart.

The collective experience and deep passion of the trio speak powerfully on ARISE, their debut cd on Motéma Music. Arriale personally challenges herself to connect with each note she plays and devotes equal passion to choosing repertoire. The selections on ARISE span many styles, weaving a common thread through the social consciousness of several generations. The album's title sprang from Lynne's emotional response to our uncertain times. "I wanted to bring to mind a sense of opening, of uplift, of a challenge to stand up for things that matter, to be better, to be stronger, to facilitate change," says Arriale. Her sentiments echo through four outstanding original tunes Arise, Esperanza, The Fallen, and Upswing which are destined to become future classics. These compelling tracks are gracefully reinforced by Lynne's emotionally sophisticated arrangements of pop favorites Change the World, Lean On Me and Kum Ba Ya. Rounding out the album with eclectic flare is an athletic romp through Egberto Gismonti's Frévo and a smoky interpretation of the rock classic, American Woman.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

5 out of 5 stars Takes you into the Holy of Holies.......2006-04-22

I am a praise dancer that usually dances/listens to Gospel music, but upon encountering this CD I realize that I have never heard/danced (to) music that has taken me so close into the presence of the Father. I had this cd years ago and played it until the CD broke. I am so glad to be able to have it again, and pray that you will buy it and listen to it. It truly takes you into the Shekinah Glory, and is allows an experience in worship that is like no other..

Des louanges grandioses pour adorer le Seigneur tout puissant.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Inspirational Music ! Get The Video Too !!!.......2003-05-07

I have listened to a lot of Gospel/Christian music of late, some of which has been quite inspirational. However, I can honestly say that this CD by Paul Wilbur is by far the best Christian music that I have come across.

The lyrics, music and atmosphere purveyed during the production are absolutely incredible. Performed live in Jerualem, Israel, this has to be a must-hear for every Christian. Seldom has such music been so moving.

The adoration for the Lord Jesus through the music and lyrics is extremely personal and intimate and is like balm to the soul.

The lyrics are so deep and meaningful and the music is pure worship. The singer appears to be lost in worship and adoration for the Lord, not to mention the Choir and even the audience themselves !

I really am lost for words as how to describe the sheer majesty and praise emanating from this work ! If I could only recommend one Christian CD, then this would be the one. Highly recommended.

There is also a VHS video available of the actual live recording of this event in Jerusalem. It is incredible ! The praise and worship will blow your mind. One of the most amazing spectacles of Christian music that I have ever seen.

Paul Wilbur's other CD's "Shalom Jerusalem", "Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem" and "Lion Of Judah" are all highly recommended too.

THIS IS MUSIC YOU CAN LISTEN TO EVERY DAY AND ENJOY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

3 out of 5 stars White bread, well-baked in spots.......2005-08-12

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.

However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a group of white folks far removed from the remainder of humanity. For example, the opening track, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and also "All Creatures of Our God and King" sound rote and perfunctory, like a group of elementary school students (with very fine voices, to be sure) going through the paces of a daily sing: elevator music on a grand scale. At the opposite extreme, sudden dynamic shifts in other tracks sound pretentious. The final bars of "All Creatures of Our God and King" suggest an attempt at a grand finale, but lack even a hint of majesty or passion. The choir lacks any apparent understanding of the Shaker spirit in "Simple Gifts" --- rather like Lawrence Welk playing Bob Marley. (Not that I've ever seen a Shaker in dreadlocks.) "Battle Hymn of the Republic" begins majestically, but turns into a caricature, and then reverts to a semblance of glory (except for a brief flirtation with a minor key).

The high praise lavished on this disc by other reviewers is no surprise: It is of very high quality for what it is. The choir offers a lovely sound. However, more than half the tracks are seriously flawed, and the musicianship is sufficiently peculiar on the whole as to lower the rating considerably.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2002-08-24

If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. Congratulations to the new conductor, Craig Jessop and all those who contributed to the quality that went into producing this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Sabbath.......2002-04-17

I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.

What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!

I love it. Truly a masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Sabbath.......2002-02-05

If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.

I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

This is the original recording of the '60s Swingle Singers. It focuses on Bach and provides entertaining and intricate renditions of his works. I recently saw the New Swingle Singers, who were very good, but they are diverging into jazz and often sound like Manhattan Transfer. Their newer CDs all begin to sound alike. I prefer the original artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Swinging Bach.......2005-12-30

When the Swingle Singers take on Bach's polyphony at full speed, it's exhilarating. Very cleanly done, very fun, and the jazz drums and bass add nicely to the sound.
Like many people, I have a soft spot for this group because my parents listened to them. (Next time your favorite retro-hipster starts in, pop this disk in, followed by a little Switched-On Bach, and let the love/hate debate begin.)
I could have done without a few of the slow Bach chestnuts featured here (maybe the "Wachet Auf" wasn't overdone in 1963), but the strong numbers, such as the mini-epic "Sinfonia", with a great soprano solo, carry the album to a higher plane. The drummer overplays in a few spots, but overall this record just plain works.
Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I've been looking for this for a LONG time..........2005-06-19

I loved listening to this with my Dad in the 60's and 70's and had always wanted a "clean" copy of my own. I have the original LP, but the pops and hisses now mar the recording and let's face it, a CD is a lot easier to listen to. This is NOT the title or album cover of the LP issued in the US, but IS the same recording as the "Bach's Greatest Hits" LP released here in 1963 (or 1964) with the white album cover and grey line drawings of Bach et al. It is just as I remebered it. What a nice memory.

5 out of 5 stars Vol.1 Jazz Sebastian Bach.......2001-04-28

Dear Sirs! > I have not intention to buy the CD version of Jazz Sebastian Bach one of the highlights of the Swingle Singers. This is more testimony, but very, very rare, than professional review of one CD. But this text can be may be useful for your buyers. My English is not the best, so you fill free to rewrite this text in the way appropriate for you buyers.

Text of review

It was in Paris, France, probably on June 8th 1964. For the first time four ladies and four mans on stage in Cite Universite as vocal group Les >Swingle Singers. They open his first public appearance with Fugue in D Minor. Thirty seven years later I am seeing very clear those shine faces of artists, joyful that his project vocalize J. B. Bach is a true. I am hearing now one of the best singers in Europe, not only at that time, Christiane Legrand (sister of famous composer, conductor, piano player an even excellent singer M. Legrand). Hers voice in Aria is simply fantastic. I have the chance to hear this group on his second concert in Paris, several months later. This was also an excellent concert, but without unforgettable fire of the first one. I have 12 LP of this group even this performed by the group called Swingle II. If you hear the CD Jazz Sebastian Bach you would understand what told ones Charlie Parker. J. S. Bach is the greatest composer in the history of mankind. You would understand one other miracle, why last year Bobby McFerrin were able to improvise on Bach and at the same time the public on the square in Dresden sings Gounod's Ave Maria. > Igor Catic, Zagreb Croatia From time to time jazz presenter on Croatian broadcasting systems.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing Their Tradition of Great Worship CD's.......2005-03-11

This is trio Phillips, Craig, & Dean's third worship CD. I love their first two, and was quite eager to get this one. I wasn't disappointed.

Unlike the first two, this one only had two songs I was familiar with. The "In Christ Alone" medley takes the recent praise chorus and combines it with the chorus to the song of the same name made famous by Michael English. I was surprised to learn that Shawn Craig had written the song before the group formed. The other song is "Wonderful Merciful Savior." I've recently learned this great chorus, and their version of it is outstanding.

As with previous projects, the guys contribute a couple songs of their own. "Because I'm Forgiven" focuses on the reason we praise God. "Be the Praise of My Heart" recognizes that true worship comes from every action of our lives and not just the songs we sing. "Awake My Soul" is a prayer to be surrendered to God and become more like Him. Finally, "Mighty is the Power of the Cross" reflects on what was done for us on the cross.

The rest of the songs are great as well. The CD opens with "Friend of God," a joyful song about the mind-blowing idea that the God of the universe calls us friend. I actually heard "You are God Alone" on the radio before I got the CD and couldn't wait to get my own copy.

Every song on this CD focuses praise on God for all He's done for us and who He is. Music doesn't get much better then this.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

In their previous seven-year existence Sepultura had steadily established themselves as Brazil's premier metal outfit, but it wasn't until 1991's breakthrough album Arise that they truly captured hearts and minds. Subsequently rereleased with the addition of four bonus tracks--including the band's monumental annihilation of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron"--Arise highlights Sepultura's irrefutable kinship with Metallica. The harmonic guitar interplay between Max Cavalera's rock-solid rhythm work and Andreas Kisser's lead lines--on occasions the six-stringed equivalent of a dentist drill--is devastating. Max's tortured vocals and brother Igor's rhythmic battery are marked by sheer, unfettered aggression. Moments of restraint, as on the quite astonishing "Altered State," merely accentuate the band's trademark brutality, and "Dead Embryonic Cells" is coal-black Sepultura. Even with historical perspective, Arise retains its ignominious appeal. --Ian Fortnam

5 out of 5 stars Thrash Metal Heaven - A Perfect Album Start to Finish.......2006-11-11

I think its fair to compare Arise to maybe Beneath the Remains or the awesome Chaos AD, but unfair to compare it too other thrash albums. This stuff destroys and lays to ruins all heavy metal acts on the planet. That said, when I reach in my CD case for a sick thrash CD - I usually grab this one before Chaos or BTR. This one is just retarded from beginning to end. If you are reading this review.. run out jump in the car the drive 100 mph to the nearest record shop and PRAY they have it in stock. Absolutely mind boggling stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the overrated ROOTS........2006-09-29

In fact, the 2 arent even in the same genre (Arise = Thrash Metal > Roots = Nu Metal). Arise is Sepultura at their fiercest, most talented and creative form. Outstanding riffs populate this release as well and a true headbanger's delight.

Don't listen to those kids out there saying Roots is better/their best album..their knowledge of music history obviously only goes back as far as 1996...>>

5 out of 5 stars Classic by the jungle boys of metal!.......2006-08-04

In 1991, Sepultura released their fourth full-length album "Arise". This album was their third best just behind "Chaos A.D." and "Beneath the Remains". This album marked a change in Max's voice. From the Tom Araya style vocals in their first three albums to the death metal growling that's present on this album and on "Chaos A.D." and "Roots". The drums on this album by Igor Cavalera are awesome. Igor has to be one of the most underrated drummers in metal! Andreas Kisser although he has done better on other Sepultura albums still does a good job on here handling the solos. My favorite song on this album is "Desperate Cry". Other highlights are the title track, "Dead Embryonic Cells", and "Altered State". Don't forget to get all of Sepultura's studio albums from "Morbid Visions" to "Chaos AD". And once again avoid all of that Derrick Green, "Roots" and Soulfly cr a p!

5 out of 5 stars Forget the Black Album!!.......2006-07-18

This Sep' album rules, its quickly catching up to "Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation" and "Schizofrenia" as one of my favorites. Like what HellHammer said, these guys are becoming more complex with age, Selloutallica was doing the opposite. Max's frustration with the world and politics are very well written in this album, and his voice is very rough. Andreas Kisser's guitar work is very good, his harmonies, riffs, and solos; he's way better than Kirk Hammett. Paulo Jr.'s basslines aren't that audible in this album, but they still kick (listen to "Chaos AD" for audible bass). Igor Cavalera's drumming is fast yet complex, he's the Brazilian Dave Lombardo.

That being said, its no surprise this is one of the best albums of 1991, along with Suffocation's "Effigy of the Forgotten." I love all the songs on here, but my favorites have to be "Arise," "Dead Embryonic Cells," "Altered States," and "Meaningless Movements."

Get this along with Slayer's "Seasons in the Abyss," Megadeth's "Rust in Peace," and Suffocation's "Effigy of the Forgotten."

Avoid the grunge albums being released at this time such as *cough* Nirvana *cough* and *cough* Soundgarden *cough*, and avoid Selloutallica's "The Black Album," metal reigns supreme!!

5 out of 5 stars You'll forget all about the Black album.......2006-07-14

The only band that can give thrash greats Megadeth and Slayer a run for their money, its unfortunate that they are never mentioned alot, even though they were just as important to the thrash genre as Kreator, Pantera, and the Big Four of thrash. My complaint aside, this album is by far one of the greatest metal albums of 1991 and by far Sepultura's greatest ever. While Metallica was slowing down their speed and simplifying their riffs, Sepultura was doing the exact opposite. This CD is so blazingly fast, it nearly topples Slayer's Reign in Blood in overall headbanging madness and crazy solos.

Songs Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry, and Infected Voice are my favorites, but there are no weak spots in this classic. Also worth checking out are Kreators Pleasure to Kill, Sepulturas Beneath the Remains, Slayers Seasons in the Abyss, and Megadeths Countdown to Extinction for some thrashy goodness.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27

This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23

Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.

5 out of 5 stars A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03

Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10

I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.
