If Anthony Wilson were simply another new jazz guitar hotshot with chops to burn, he'd still be worth noticing. Wilson's third disc as a leader, Adult Themes, sprinkles plenty of his deliciously melodic and Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt-infused soloing all over the disc's eight tracks. But Wilson's formidable guitar playing isn't even half of what makes Adult Themes so remarkable. Rather, it's the way his composing and arranging takes such full advantage of his nine-piece group that it's hard at times to believe this isn't an actual big band making these sounds. Anyone who noticed the sophistication of Wilson's previous efforts, his self-titled 1997 debut and 1998's Goat Hill Junket, may not be overly surprised, but what lifts Adult Themes above those albums is an increased diversity, as John Carisi's "Barry's Tune" settles into a deep Afro-Cuban groove and a version of the Beatles' "Because" even features an electric sitar. But it's the album's closing title piece, a five-part suite that recalls Charles Mingus's ambitious extended works, that is Wilson's crowning moment. Combining unaccompanied guitar, luscious horn orchestrations, and dizzying swing, the piece has a unified mood and should put to rest any speculation about Wilson being someone to watch for in the future: after Adult Themes, he's clearly already here. --Ezra Gale
From Jazziz
Perhaps it's genetic: Guitarist Anthony Wilson, like his father, trumpeter/bandleader Gerald, is an avowed believer in the majesty of large ensembles and big bands. And from the opening moments of "Adult Themes," 31-year-old Wilson's third recording, his alliance with jazz's old school is apparent.
The album's first notes are sounded by Wilson's warm, Montgomery-toned guitar line, which, in turn, is punctuated by a Third Stream-informed, five-voice horn burst. And throughout the CD, Wilson combines traditional precepts and references with his imprimatur as composer, arranger, and guitarist.
Indeed, Wilson is an undeniable triple threat, but it's "Adult Themes'" stunning brass voices and compositions that leave the longest-lasting impression. Like Oliver Nelson - whose mix of blues structure and neo-classical brass sonorities is an undeniable influence here - Wilson's brilliance as an arranger overshadows his bluesy, lithely swinging elegance and economy on guitar.
Throughout, Wilson deconstructs and augments his band. He adds a sultry organ to his cover of Donald Fagen's "Maxine" and to his own swinging blues vehicle "Idle Blues." Then he pares things down to a whisper with various combinations, from instrumental soliloquies to duets, before opening up the nonet, full bore, with iridescent horn blasts, each voice quavering together in a gorgeous big-band vibrato. An ambitious and successful interpretation of the Beatles' "Because" finds Wilson playing the song's eerie arpeggios with an electric sitar as trombone mimics the song's early usage of Moog synthesizer while also adding a growling New Orleans flavor. On the album's title track, a five-part suite, Wilson further demonstrates the enormity of his scope, referencing Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers on "Unfinished Business"; and evocative, Metheny-esque broken-chord textures on "Lullaby"; and coalescing with a spirited Crescent City fervor on "Integration."
Like father, like son, "Adult Themes" proves Wilson one of the most compelling jazz thinkers to come along in ages.

The 1996 follow-up CD to For Our Children packs less romp and more hush. Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin Keller

Must have CD.......2005-10-21
I bought this cd for a friend many years ago. I am now having a baby of my own. This cd was a must have for my own child!!
Perfect CD for all my children........2004-12-11
I bought this CD 8 years ago when my daughter was born. She listened to it each night up until her brother was born in 2002. Now we're expecting to pass it on to their new sibling in Aug of 2005. Amazing how one CD can put 3 different children to sleep so peacefully!
For Our Children is much better.......2004-09-23
I was so disappointed with this CD I am writing my very first review for Amazon. The first CD in this "collection" is so fun and very charming. This one lacks on many levels.
A must have.......2004-01-30
We received this CD as a gift when our first child was born. I have bought it for all our friends who have babies since then. It contains the most beautiful renditions of many songs from our own childhood. Everyone who has received it, loves it!!! In addition, the few songs we were unfamiliar with turned out to be some of our favorites!
kids music adults can listen to.......2003-11-23
This CD, along with the original For Our Children, contains artists you know, singing songs you remember from your childhood. We had to replace our first version of this CD, because the kids played it so often that they scratched it beyond any use at all. My 5 year old son knows all the words to If I had a Hammer, and You are my Sunshine, and his favorite of all time is Puff the Magic Dragon- this version is the best I've ever heard. My personal favorite is the Elton John song about a boy who first meets his newborn brother. Stop now and go get this CD- you won't be sorry!!

The mineral voice from the very core of the earth.......2007-03-29
Some classify this music in noise, and yet I think it is quite something else. It uses some noise, produced by instruments or not, distorts it in order to create a shrill universe that is rhythmically throbbing in multiple directions. But it also uses human voices or maybe just guttural noise, or even animal utterances that it modulates and even in a way transforms into a forest of growth and shoots that becomes like a maze or a net in which your ears are trapped. But at times, like with "the inconsolable widows in search of distraction", we reach the other side of voice, when we can discover the immensity of human feelings, sufferings or expectations that can inhabit these voices without us ever being able to realize it in simple conditions. It takes this formal work performed on them for the semantic draping, clothing and dressing to be unwrapped to reveal this pathetic, sensual, sensory and sensitive content. Voice then becomes what it is all the time and we ignore: the expression of the deepest physiological functioning of our body, flesh, nerves, bones and brain. Try track 17 when a woman is dressing in the skin of a lizard, or vice versa, and you'll see how cool and slick that female voice can be. Amazing how we feel the vast emptiness of space as seen through the eyes of the reptile.

This is a pure noise music album........2006-10-24
This album displays a specific type of music which just happens to be rather close to Mike's heart: Noise. He's utilized his voice in this manner in past efforts: Some tracks on FNM's Angel Dust and especially Mr. Bungle's first major-label album features Mike making effects very similar in vain to this.
This album starts out with the gripping yet boring "Wuxiapian". The album really takes off with "I Killed Him Like A Dog ...And He Still Laughed", and seems to fluctuate from thrilling to mediocre and back again several times. "The Man In The Lower-Left Hand Corner Of The Photograph" is also great, as is the 10-minute long "Guinea Pig" epic which spans 4 tracks on this CD. "The Lizard With A Skin Of A Woman" has to be heard to be believed. This track alone is worth it.
I agree with one reviewer here: This album can't function as background music. It must be enjoyed as one would curl up and enjoy a book. The Journey is laid out in the cover, detailing the dates and hotels in which this was masterfully composed. As for as noise music goes, it's a good first album to the genre. Between this, his other jazzy solo effort and Maldoror, Mike has proved to be a master at noise. It's not for everyone; just look at the one-star reviews about this. A great solo debut.
Great Job, Mike.
This is a joke, not music.......2006-09-28
My exposure to Mike Patton comes mostly from Faith No More & Mr. Bungle, whom I loved. I have something from most of his other projects like Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Fantomas and Dillinger Escape Plan. I've found all these projects to range all the way from 'pointless and boring' to 'very cool', though not quite up to the FNM/Bungle standard.
Ok, so you know where I'm at.
Getting to this and his other solo album: it's just hideous. It's definately noisy, and there is in fact sound, but there is no real music on here whatsoever. It's him making weird noises into a mic, with some effects... and not even cool noises (a couple of exceptions aside).
You will not jam to this. You will not rock out. Headbanging is just flat out. You could go to a construction site and hear more music.
Fantomas... without a band.......2006-01-12
This was Patton in hotel rooms during the '95 Faith No More tour, recording and exploring his voice and "weirdness" into his 4-track. No instruments, just him, a mic, and feedback. It's unquestionably unique, very funny and eerie at times, and it's definitely an interesting look at his behind-the-scenes genius. There would most likely never have been a Fantomas had he not recorded these, as this is surely that band's "prequel." Check it out, just don't expect a rock album or something.
come on beatbox / play one for me..........2005-11-24
When this album first came out, my friends and I listened to it in the car as soon as we got out of the store. We were freaked out. Keep in mind that aside from F.N.M. and Mr. Bungle there weren't really any other Patton projects on the market at that time. We ended up spending the rest of the night sneaking up on people and playing the cd at full blast, then driving off as people jumped or just thought that our car had some sort of engine problem. We ended up making that a weekend routine that we called "Mike Pattoning" people.
It wasn't until I had my own copy and was able to closely study each song that I truly understood the vocal dexterity present on the album.
Rather than a collection of "songs," this album is more like reading Mike Patton's journal. A journal with some pages covered with doodles and other pages with extreme study on a particular subject.
My only complaint is that the liner notes fail to mention the use of effects pedals- an omission easily overlooked, yet still scratching at the integrity of the work due to the fact that the manipulation of effects plays an integral part of specific pieces.
Most dissent towards this album stems from the lack of melody in the work. This opinion comes from fans who put the "logical" F.N.M. at the top of their list and the "irrational" sounds of either Mr. Bungle or Fantomas near the bottom. This work is freeform and percussive, much like certain Bungle track moved towards and Fantomas fully embraces.
If you are a fan of this album, I would highly suggest checking out Period Two on the MySpace website. His work is in a similar vein but come from the roots of 1980s beatboxing.

Moved from cassete to CD.......2007-02-19
After 10 years of babying the cassete of this album decided to look for a CD form. Glad to have found it! Disney needs to put out this album again. A real change from the nasty kids music out today. THE BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!
Best of the best.......2006-06-21
I got this tape for my daughter 15 years ago, and still remember her imitating Little Richard from her carseat! I am also an elementary classroom and music teacher, and found this to be the most enjoyable children's tape we owned. We never got tired of it; in fact, since ours disappeared, I'm ordering a new one as well as one for my newest nephew. I encourage any parent to get one of these while they're still around!
Oldie but Goodie.......2004-10-16
I had this tape when my oldest daughter was born in '91. I wish it were still in print, so to speak. It was great having kids songs sung by contemporary artists who created fun recordings that didn't grate on your nerves after hours of listening to kids' songs. I now have a new baby & can't find my tape so want a new copy to keep us both entertained.

+ 1/2 stars...Mostly Recycled Steamroller.......2005-03-01
The Mannheim Steamroller juggernaut seems to be running out of steam. Instead of a new album of all new material, Chip Davis cobbles together this album of tracks dating all the way back to 1975's Fresh Aire I through 2000's Fresh Aire 8 with a handful of new tracks thrown in for good measure. And the new tracks are not what's best about this album. "Love Theme from 'Romeo & Juliet'" certainly fits the romantic theme and is up to Steamroller standards, but "Love Is Blue" is slowed down to almost a funeral dirge pace. Altogether, this album will certainly set the mood for a romantic evening; but if you're a serious Steamroller fan, there's not that much new here to justify purchase.
More of The Same.......2005-02-14
Sounds like Chips stuck in a loop. Come on Chip let's hear something really new.
Thank You For The Introduction To Mehdi !.......2005-02-09
I've always enjoyed Mannheim and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered "Instrumental Heaven" By Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After some investigation I found Their site (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Chip Davis fan I find Mehdi to be a tad more interesting. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
What's not to love about Mannheim Steamroller?.......2005-02-08
Mannheim Steamroller, the leading light in Christmas cheer, gives a valentine to fans with Romantic Themes, a collection of beautiful, slow-paced instrumentals that explore the primal and spiritual aspects of love. Chip Davis and his music aren't just for December merriment anymore.
*ALSO RECOMMENDED: MEHDI~ INSTRUMENTAL HEAVEN VOLUME 7...A TRUE GEM..FULL SAMPLES ARE AT SoothingMusic.Com... JUST LISTEN !
Laziness prevails.......2005-01-07
Please read this before ordering: This is yet another compilation album featuring previously released tracks by Mannheim Steamroller. If you're new to the band, this isn't a problem, and it might in fact be a good way to be introduced to their non-Christmas music. For the rest of you... you can compile most it yourself and save some money. Here's the track listing:
1. Love is Blue
2. Time For Us
3. Circle of Love (from "Fresh Aire 8")
4. Sunday Morning Coffee (from "Sunday Morning Coffee")
5. Pine of Rome 2nd. Movement (from "Yellowstone")
6. Sonata (from "Fresh Aire I")
7. Yam Seng (from "Romance")
8. Mozart Piano C. 2nd. Movement
9. Teddies and Hearts (from "Impressions")
10. Rainbows (from "Fresh Aire 7")
11. Velvet Tear (from "Fresh Aire 2")
12. Cavatina
Chip Davis has apparently retired, as he only releases compilation albums these days, featuring just a couple of new tracks each time to ensure somebody buys them. Financially, I'm sure it's working out great for him, but it's a shame that a good musician has resorted to doing this.

Don't look for "Kentucky Woman"- or "America"-level energy in As Time Goes By, Neil Diamond's double-disc collection of movie themes. These tracks are much more orchestrated (conducted by soundtrack legend Elmer Bernstein, even), and although they're just as emotive, they're ultimately too smooth for most of us. It's an interesting mix of old and new--songs range from "Moon River" to a surprisingly effective "My Heart Will Go On"; there's even a Sinatra medley. Diamond is certainly in top form (just not the form some of us wish he was still in), and Bernstein's music is effective. The real flaw is the pacing--seemingly upbeat numbers just never seem to take off. "And I Love Her," "Puttin' On the Ritz," and "True Love" beg for the jazz singer we once knew. Does every diamond in the rough eventually get polished? Suppose so... --Jason Verlinde

Rip-off.......2007-03-30
I'm not going to critique the music, that's totally subjective. I happen to like about 8 of the songs a lot and the others are so-so. Just my opinion, others will differ. In general, I like Neil Diamond's music a lot. Prospective buyers should know, however, that the price of this 33 minutes-per-CD set is a rip-off. That's right, there's only a total of 66 minutes of music, and therefore, no excuse to put the music on 2 CDs and charge a double-CD price. Columbia Records was obviously out to fool the brick-and-mortar buyer who hadn't read online reviews.
Golden Oldies & Newbies!.......2006-02-22
Neil Diamond's medley of past and present movie adagios in this great album are indeed very pleasant listening. He still has the voice to delight those of us who enjoy the music and lyrics of songs from great lyricists, past and present, although I thought that at times Neil held the pitch of the note a little too long and as a result the notes became a little flat. Nevertheless, he still sings with passion and feeling and I have always regarded him as a great songwriter and singer. He has definitely earned his place in the annals of the all-time great singer/songwriters.
Memories and More.......2006-02-17
"I remember THAT song!" How often have I said that! Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine, and when my favorite singer performs my favorite songs...what could be better? This collection is the BEST for travel!
Great songs, great Diamond, but buyer beware anyway!.......2006-01-28
Apart from the abominations from "Titanic" and "The Lion King," these are great songs, and thank goodness Neil _doesn't_ sing them as if they were "Sweet Caroline" or "America." His style here is warm, mellow, and romantic, and he carries it off well. This is an album to hear late at night as you are snuggling on the couch, not when you're looking for a pick me up. The largely orchestral arrangements (conducted by Elmer Bernstein!) add a lot too. The only problem is the length of this 2-CD set: both discs are under 35 minutes long, so why were 2 CDs needed? Answer: they weren't. It is for that reason that you should _not_ under any circumstances pay full price for this set! That is the only reason I have docked this release a star.
real sleeper.......2005-09-13
I listened to portions of the songs ahead of time, thought I would like the CD. Don't listen to the CD while driving, it will put you to sleep. I guess I should listen to it at bedtime since I am stuck with it.

--Ezra Gale
Customer Reviews:
The Best Jazz Album of the Year!.......2000-01-16
I am not exaggerating. Anthony Wilson (son of Gerald) is the best jazz composer/arranger to come on the scene in years. In Adult Themes, he has put together an absolutely gorgeous album, with top notch musicians (including Pete Christlieb), melodies and arrangements. While innovative in his own right, Wilson seems very influenced by Charles Mingus in his compositions and arrangements, and by Pat Metheny in his (very nuanced) guitar work. If you are a fan of those two giants, chances are that you will greatly enjoy this album. The five-part title piece alone is worth more than the price of admission.

For Our Children launched in 1990 and in many ways inspired the bounty of celebrity-philanthropy records for kids in its wake. From Bob Dylan and Sting to Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, and Elton John, the roster on this cornucopia of great kid songs--and even greater interpretations--has donated all proceeds to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Although tilted toward baby-boomer parents, the tracks have a timeless, ageless appeal. You'll be hard-pressed to find another five-star children's recording this satisfying, including the follow-up effort, For Our Children, Too. Little Richard rocks "Itsy Bitsy Spider," McCartney turns his sweet, melodic gifts toward "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and Bruce Springsteen makes a lively stew of "Chicken Lips and Lizard Hips." Other noteworthy moments include Jackson Browne and Jennifer Warnes doing the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" and Carole King reprising the Disney Dumbo love theme, "Child of Mine." But surely the crowning touch is Dylan's unforgettable version of "This Old Man," phrased and delivered as only Dylan can with his mercurial invention and powerful character. This belongs in your children's collection. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Glad to have it in CD version.......2007-01-05
I bought the original ten years ago and was disappointed when the cassette broke while playing. This is a fun CD for kids and adults alike. It is great to hear the stars sing our favorite childhood songs!
The most wonderful children's CD ever made.......2006-08-29
My family grew up with these songs, we have gone through multiple copies as they have been well worn & misplaced as we took them everywhere. I am so excited to find that there is an edition still availble as I raise my kids for them to fall in love with all the music from my childhood heart. I have sung more songs to them from off of this album than from anywhere else. I can't recommend this highly enough.
Great kids CD.......2006-08-28
Our son enjoys this and so do I. Some of the slow songs are a drag, but all in all it is great for kids.
Best childrens CD ever!.......2006-07-13
My daughter and I adore this CD! We would sing along to it where ever we went! Our favorite is Blueberry Pie by Bette Middler. The CD finally got way too scratched up to play so we have not had the pleasure of hearing it for over a year. :( Emily is 7 now and still asks me to please put on her favorite CD. Now that I have found it again, she will be so happy.
A Best Buy.......2006-04-26
"For Our Children" was always a tape we had around when I was a child. I used to listen to it every night before I went to sleep, and find myself singing the songs from it to this day. My favorites are James Taylor's "Getting to Know You" from "The King and I", and Sting's "Cushie Butterfield". This album is wonderful because the music is actually good enough for parents to enjoy as well. It's basically a good compilation album that just happens to be completely child-safe.
