A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra may not be top-shelf OP, but it is a most attractive and illuminating set. Recorded in Paris in May 1959, it marked drummer Ed Thigpen's Peterson debut--though such is the group's three-in-one empathy that you'd never think so. Three months later they recorded over 100 titles in the space of a fortnight, the majority a reprise of Peterson's 10-album Songbook series from 1952-1954, and the ethos of this precursor is very similar, with its accent on beautifully crafted tributes to the American popular song at its finest. The performances are short, but anything but perfunctory: Peterson's arrangements are as distinguished for imagination as for appositeness, and those arrangements--even more than his glorious pianism--are the key to this portrait's enduring success. Bassist Ray Brown is just awesome, and not even the decidedly modest playing time should stop you from adding this to your collection without delay. --Richard Palmer

if you are a fan of Oscar Peterson this belongs in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Works like Sinatra's music , taking you deep into the feeling.......2006-12-17

This trio is so versatile , no wonder they are seen as a classic unit .
It helps if you know the lyrics to all these songs , as that helps you to enjoy it even more . There is no wasted time on the album - it is brief , but all the arrangements are perfect .

The infectious and positive spirit of the trio comes across undiluted on the album .
Great for a party , in the car or relaxing at home .
Listening to it is one of my favourite ways to pass the time .

5 out of 5 stars What Chopin Is To Classical, Peterson Is To Jazz.......2006-12-13

I've been listening to some of the many memorable Sinatra CDs from my collection since Sunday night, and this CD is one of them. This is my very own special way of honoring the legendary Chairman of the Board's 91st birth anniversary today, December 12, 2006.

"For years I have been an ardent admirer of Frank Sinatra. I've been thrilled by his singing and I've respected the taste that goes with his singing. As a musician I've further admired his choice of tunes and as a fan I've recognized that certain tunes are forever, at least in my mind, inextricably linked with Sinatra, both by usage and interpretation and by that special magic that is his alone. This album is not only a tribute to Frank Sinatra, but also my emotional interpretation of the feelings I get when I hear him. I have tried, therefore, to paint as well as I can a portrait, told in my personal jazz terms, of Frank Sinatra." ~ Oscar Peterson ~

I'm in accord with Oscar Peterson's sentiments about Frank Sinatra and his music especially coming from a jazz icon himself who has made a very impressive mark in the history of jazz.

This album, which was recorded in Paris on May 18, 1959, is worthy to any jazz aficionado and Oscar Peterson and Frank Sinatra enthusiasts. It's one of the best Sinatra tributes ever recorded and one of the greatest piano jazz albums of all-time. Yes, this recording is definitely old - recorded 47 years ago, but the sound quality is outstanding. Thanks to the marvel of today's sound engineering and mastering. Oscar Peterson, a legendary pianist and one of the most respected names in the jazz world, did a sublimely exceptional job in "painting a jazz portrait" of another musical legend and Entertainer of the Century, Frank Sinatra.

The master of the ivories, together with his long-time partners, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums play some of the signature tunes made popular by Sinatra most notably "You Make Me Feel So Young," "Come Dance With Me," "It Happened In Monterey," "Just In Time" and "I Get A Kick Out Of You."

You'll totally enjoy listening to a dozen of terrific tunes as he tickles the ivories and gives you that remarkably familiar jazz piano and I call it "Distinctively Peterson Sound" - that effortless and powerful piano playing. Each interpretation is so enjoyable to listen to. Oscar Peterson turns these tunes into ear-catching melodies with his spontaneity and artistry in piano playing.

With Oscar Peterson on the ivories, there's never a dull moment. Although these tunes were recorded countless times, he made each melody so special with its respective rhythms that are so infectious and highly-spirited.

This is one great CD jazz fans wouldn't want to miss. Listen now and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A valuable musical document !.......2006-05-11

The enraptured genius of Peterson shone once more, with this special dedication to the most emblematic American singer of the last Century. So just imagine a colossus playing some of the radiant music of a giant singer. The result cannot be more flattering and flattening too.

Don' t miss it this album under no pretext.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Oscar in excellent remasterd sound.......2005-08-19

This classic Sinatra tribute has been remastered beautifully to properly showcase this inimitable trio of Peterson, Brown, and Thigpen. It's only too bad they didn't see fit to add some of the many other Sinatra tunes recorded at this same session as the playing time is very short. While these tunes only last 2-3 minutes each, the fact Peterson edited himself to basically just the melodies in no way detracts from the wonderful group feel. These classic songs associated with Sinatra are a wonderful complement to the originals. Essential.

A best-of pared down from so many other Columbia boxes and cardboard tombstones, this 36-track, double-disc collection showcases a boy whose voice and heart had yet to break, revealing the man within. Sinatra would re-record most of these tracks for Capitol and Reprise, and the later performances were at once weary and wise. here, Francis Albert is still copping Crosby moves and singing over the screaming teenaged girls, his voice as reed-thin as his body. The Columbia recordings--including "All or Nothing at All," "Night and Day," "Body and Soul," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and myriad other standards he'd make his own until his death--are cool, but not nearly as warm as his later records. Buy it to find out what he wasn't, then marvel at what he would become. --Robert Wilonsky

5 out of 5 stars The Best Two-CD Collection of Frank Sinatra in the 1940's.......1998-06-21

If you are looking for an album which will remind you how good things used to be, and still can be, you have found the right album. This collection features the most famous and loved tunes that Mr. Sinatra immortalized during the 40's. These are the songs you can listen to over and over again. You can hear and feel Frank's youth and innocence contrasted against the sometimes cold hardships of his life (and your own). If you are looking for the cream of Sinatra but don't want to pay $100-200 for a complete box-set collection, this is your set. Since aquiring these CD's I have not listened to anything else. They're that good!!

5 out of 5 stars The best emotions music can provide.......2005-10-09

I bought the CD a few months ago, bought a few CD's since I thought I liked it. Then I started listening to it, again and again. That's when I started loving it. When I feel sad it makes me happy, when I feel happy it makes me feel happier. It makes you want to dance.
ONE OF THE BEST OSCAR PETERSON CDs. Oscar at his best with a very personal portrait of Frank Sinatra. It is very rare to have a jazzman devote an entire album to a singer (as a portrait) which means O.P. admires Frank sinatra and it shows it the way he plays, the tempo, the heart he puts in it. All songs are brilliant, with a special attention to Witchcraft, Saturday Nights, All of me, It happened in Monterey.
a must for jazz enthousiasts, a must for O.P. fans, a must for Sinatra lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2004-10-01

This is one of the best "Oscar Peterson" CDs I have ever
purchased, and now one of my all time favorite. Oscar Peterson
played every song so beautifully, not to mention the CD sound
quality was very good too. Personally, I think it has a good
concentrated selection of songs that is far better than the
"very best" or the "essential" series. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Old But New!.......2004-07-29

I purchased this cd a while ago and then ran across a taped copy of Oscar Peterson's "A Jazz Portrait Of Frank Sinatra" from a two LP set out of England. Why they didn't release a two CD set to include the missing 18 songs, I'll never know. Some of the songs are on other CDs, but they are some of Frank's best and are timeless. The current CD, although lacking the original release, is very listenable. One of the best is "Witchcraft". Oscar Peterson is at his best on these recordings.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Break From Listening To Sinatra :).......2003-08-13

If for some reason you ever max out on listening to Sinatra you can put this CD on to take a short break. You won't be disappointed because Mr. Peterson's arrangements are fabulous and the musicianship is spot on.

This disc will have special appeal to Sinatra fans because it's a beautifully crafted tribute to a relatively young Frank (it was recorded in 1959 when Frank was 43), but any jazz lover will know these tunes as well and will appreciate the trio's performances.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Come Dance With Me!!!.......2000-08-08

Listening to this CD, you can't avoid to keep your feet busy! Incredible album. One of the best CDs that I've got. Oscar's wonderful piano playing is perfectly matched with my favourite bassist: the great Ray Brown and the rhythmically sensitive Ed.

When I listened to a song sung by Sinatra and then listen to the same song recorded by another artist, I used to say: There's no comparrison listening to Sinatra's voice and that kicking Big Band behind him! But now, I've changed my mind with this CD.

This is Truly a Tribute.
