Product Description
THE PARAGON RAGTIME ORCHESTRA (finally) PLAYS 'THE ENTERTAINER' is the latest recording by the world's only professional ensemble devoted exclusively to American popular music of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. With this new 72 minute disc, the PRO pays tribute to the "classic" rags of Scott Joplin as well as compositions by his disciples Joseph F. Lamb, Arthur Marshall, and James Scott. Included are favorites such as the "Maple Leaf," along with the world premier recordings of several original early 1900s orchestrations that have only recently come to light (among them, Harry L. Alford's arrangements of Joplin's "The Sycamore," "Eugenia," "Magnetic Rag," and his 1918 foxtrot setting of James Scott's "Dixie Dimples"; F. H. Losey's 1907 orchestration of Joplin's "Rose Leaf Rag"; and Carl F. Williams [c1875-?] arrangements of Joplin's "Stoptime" and "Search-Light" rags). Scott Joplin's own orchestration of James Scott's "Frog Legs Rag" is also presented. ! Rounding out these choice syncopated selections are a number of historically correct "reproduction" scores crafted by PRO conductor Rick Benjamin.
THE PARAGON RAGTIME ORCHESTRA (finally) PLAYS 'THE ENTERTAINER' was recorded using the latest 21st Century "high definition" digital recording techniques in the sumptuous acoustics of Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts. No effort or expense was spared to capture a realistic and crystal clear sound that should please the most discerning listener. Of further interest, all the instruments played for the sessions were period antiques (including PRO's 1910 Ludwig & Ludwig drum kit), giving the disc a further glow of warmth and authenticity.
Complimenting the recording itself is a whimsical 12-page, full color booklet created by the noted artist and ragtime scholar Chris Ware. A trove of rare photos, period advertisements, and score excerpts, this booklet, which sports conductor Benjamin's latest essay on Scott Joplin, should be of particular interest to aficionados of that era.
THE PARAGON RAGTIME ORCHESTRA (finally) PLAYS 'THE ENTERTAINER' caps this distinguished ensemble's 20-year recording career, and may well prove to be the "definitive" orchestral ragtime recording. It is a genuine "must have" disc for both the casual listener and the seasoned ragtime collector and enthusiast.

Customer Reviews:
The Babe Loves This Album.......2006-09-13
I have just bought my second copy of "The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra Finally Plays `The Entertainer.'" My original copy was stolen from my car when I was attending a Yankees vs Red Sox game. While the theft only mildly dampened my mood after a five game sweep by the Bronx Bombers over the hated Sox the larceny was mildly amazing.
The thief took the Paragon CD but left some fairly popular (modern) music CDs behind.
I can only rationalize this strange theft to the fact I parked on the street outside of Yankee Stadium at Babe Ruth Plaza.
It was probably the Babe's spirit that heisted the CD. After all Paragon's latest and arguably most wonderful CD is a treasury of music from the Babe's time, and if anyone knows just a little about Babe Ruth and the Ragtime era you know that this CD is Jumpin'.
"...Finally Plays The Entertainer" delivers a fine sampling of Scott Joplin's genius along with a couple of samples of the works of his "students" Arthur Marshall, Joseph Lamb and James Scott.
While familiar with some of Joplin's works this album has opened new vistas for me. While Joplin "101" favorites are here; the Maple Leaf (rag), The Easy Winners and of course The Entertainer - finally - pieces like Dixie Dimples, Eugenia and The Sycamore supplied me with some new smiles and a tapping foot.
Don't forget folks this scandalous music is the grandfather of Rock n'Roll, so if you buy "...Finally Plays The Entertainer" please make sure you supervise your children and grandchildren if they should happen to be listening. I hope this shocking music doesn't cause them to dance, or worse, break into my car and steal my other Paragon Orchestra CDs.
Nice Artwork.......2005-02-03
Nice artwork, as expected from Mr. Ware, but this time, the contents are not on the level! The liner notes explain the lack of orchestration skills surfacing regularly at those times, but is that a reason to play less carefully than on the other PRO recordings (the REALLY outstanding "More Candy" and "Black Manhattan", for example)? Especially the pretty rough drums playing is an annoying setback, compared to the fine balance those mucicians achieve in their other recordings. Still probably the best rendering possible of that music, I think...
Another Hit from Paragon.......2004-11-11
As usual the Paragon Ragtime orchestra has another hit. Wonderful Performance and very informative notes. My only didssapointment was that the Joplin pieces were period style arrangements by Rick Benjamin. Nevertheless, this is a wonderfully enjoyable album.

BEST c-d on ragtime EVER!!!.......2007-06-27
This is the most enjoyable c-d on ragtime that I have ever had. It is WONDERFUL. There are no words to describe the enjoyment that i have had listening to this c-d,
Music as heard in the 2004 film The Deserter!.......2004-10-22
This is a great album for anyone who like ragtime music. For people who have seen the 2004 film The Deserter by Eric B. Borgman and wondered where you could find the music, some of these exact tunes can be heard in it! Borgman cut a deal with Rick Benjamin and used several tunes from this CD and That Demon Rag!
This CD is highly recommended by me I truly believe that this is the best ragtime orchestra going on the planet!
foot stomping great ragtime.......2001-11-10
From first to last, this is the best cd of ragtime played by people who know ragtime. Unfortunately, the tunes continue to play in my head for hours after.
Truly Infectious Music.......2001-03-05
It's difficult to explain the feeling one gets when they first listen to that perfect period recording. It's a split between true happiness, excitment, and subtle comfort, the feeling as if you have been propelled into the past, the feeling as if you can see what has long been forgotten, just by closing your eyes. It's pretty difficult for an orchestra to achieve this, but I think it is safe to say that the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra or 'PRO' does.
The PRO embodies the essence of the era in which it's music (a colaboration of marches, rags, cakewalks, one steps, waltzs, and so on) came from. All of the music preformed was written for ragtime orchestra (including Pine Apple Rag, for all of you Scott Joplin fans out there) and are part of the Arthur Pryor music collection that was recently rediscovered in Atlantic City by the founder of the orchestra, Rick Benjamin.(Arthur Pryor was a member of the Sousa band, and the conductor of his own orchestra at the turn-of-the-century)
Utilizing superb training, enthusiastic sound, and chamber orchestra polish, the PRO succeeds in bringing a long forgotten musical genre back into light. And rest asured this is not a Dixieland recording, this is not a brashy, low class, bordello band. It is what can only be described as the band that would perform in the park every Sunday after church, at a high class social event, or the departure of the latest luxury liner. It is the embodiment of an era that will never come again, but is still firmly implanted in our memories.
I strongly recommend Knockout Drops to any music fan who is looking for an extraordinary ragtime recording that dosen't have a hint of piano in it. This also goes for the orchestras other recordings (That Demon Rag!, The Whistler and His Dog, and On the Boardwalk) and their video (Charlie Chaplin Moving Picture Show).

On the Level, You're A Little Devil - Songs of Vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley. A collection of vintage classics and rediscovered gems from the turn-of-the-century, performed by Soprano Jody Dall'Armi with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra.
Customer Reviews:
When stars meet.......2005-02-03
A splendid singing performance by Jody Dall'Armi, showing that some singers ARE capable of a convincing performance of those old songs, combined with the flawless and well-balanced backing by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, in great shape - again! Listen to this, and THEN go, watch and listen to a today's popular singer with his microphone, ever out-of-balance P.A., and, oh yes, his band (if there is one...)
Great Ragtime and Vaudeville Performance!.......2001-06-04
A delightful recording. Beautiful singing, great arrangements. The recording includes a 20-page song book with all the lyrics. There are a number of familiar songs like "Shine On, Harvest Moon." But there are quite a few rarely heard or recorded gems like "On the Level, You're a Little Devil." This is a must have CD.
Delightful. A must have for any lover of ragtime music.......2001-06-04
This is a special recording. It contains a number of wonderful, familiar ragtime classics, but it also has a number of rarely recorded gems. Jody's voice is incredible. She blends beautifully with the orchestra. This is a must-have recording for any lover of ragtime music! You'll want to play it all of the time because it is just so much fun to listen to!
Ragtime Gem!.......2001-05-31
A beautiful soprano voice, great backup singing and orchestration...if you love ragtime and old fashioned songs, you'll love this one!

Product Description
"MORE CANDY" is a digital recording of American popular music of the 1880s through the 1910s as performed by today's foremost interpreters of this era - the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. The music is played from the actual original orchestrations (i.e. orchesta sheet music), using antique instruments and authentic period playing styles. The disc features 26 selections - most not available on record since the age of the Victrola. Included as well are a number of world premiers, including the original versions of George Gershwin's "Swanee" (1919) and Jelly Roll Morton's own 1915 "Jelly Roll Blues" (reputedly the first-ever jazz orchestration). "MORE CANDY" was recorded with the latest in high-definition digital technology in the famous 1857 Mechanic's Hall in Worcester, MA. It is without doubt one of the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra's best recordings.

Main Street USA.......2007-02-27
Do you want the Main Street USA music from Disneyland Resort Paris (and later also used in Disney World) in CD quality ?? Do not hesistate to buy this cd. It is released again, so the high prices are gone. Just buy it. If you're a Disney fan , this is a must have!
Real American--.......2006-12-25
Boy, is this a fun album! I bought it specifically for the Whistler and His Dog, one of those tunes that everyone has heard and can't identify. The rest of the album is just as much fun. This takes us back to a time when American music was optimistic and we weren't trying to be hoods in the hood. This was the time of the building of the Panama Canal and still annexing new States to the Union. Listen to the samples and see if you don't get a smile on your face from this upbeat and long-disappeared style of music. Exceptional sound quality on the CD is a bonus.

Product Description
Joe Jordan (1882-1971) is the musician who most directly links authentic African-American ragtime with the Golden Age of the American musical theater. An artist of great versatility-he was a gifted pianist, composer, songwriter, arranger, conductor, organizer, promoter, and educator-Jordan was also remarkable for his extraordinary successes in an era of appalling racial discrimination. Threads of his long and fascinating career intertwined and intersected with historical figuresd as diverse as Fanny Brice, Scott Joplin, Orson Welles, James P. Johnson, Florenz Ziegfeld, "Fats" Waller, W. C. Handy, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Williams & Walker, Ethel Merman, Cole & Johnson, Ginger Rogers, Ernest Hogan, Will Marion Cook, Tom Turpin, and a host of others. Although he had little formal musical training, Joe Jordan composed, orchestrated, and conducted dozens of important musical productions in Chicago and New York, and wrote more than six hundred songs, several of them nationwide hits. He was also a businessman of such keen ability that by the late 1910s he had become one of the welathiest blacks in the nation. Yet, with the passage of time, awareness of Joe Jordan's music and career has faded. But a study of his rich creative legacy reveals much of importance to current and future generations. It is time for Joe Jordan's amazing story-and music- to be heard once again. This well-chosen anthology of twenty songs, the first-ever comprehensive survey of Jordan's remarkable output, features several of his most popular hits including "Lovie Joe" the song that made Fanny Brice a star. The stylish and vital performances are the fruit of exhaustive research by Rick Benjamin and bring this music vividly to life again for today's listeners and scholars of early American popular music culture.

Album Description
The Clef Club of New York City, Inc. was a fraternal and professional organization for the advancement of African-American musicians and entertainers; all of the composers on this recording were members or closely affiliated with the Club. The "Clef Club" was founded toward the end of 1909 in New York by James Reese Europe and his associates. Their mission to highlight the value, dignity, and professionalism of African-American performers was a great success and did much to change racial attitudes at all levels of white society. It quickly became a "who's who" of early twentieth-century black music and show business. With its reputation for reliability, gentility, and quality performances, the Clef Club soon gained the favor of the loftiest of New York's white society; it became the very height of fashion to announce that one had secured a genuine "Clef Club Orchestra" for an upcoming social event. The composers featured on this revelatory recording represent the cream of Black Bohemia's musical lifethe movers and shakers who paved the way for the music of the better remembered "Harlem Renaissance" of the 1920s. And while their names are obscure today, all once enjoyed national reputations in white America as well, feeding its burgeoning interest in black music, theater, and dance. Taken altogether, the talent, persistence, cooperation, and courage of these pioneers is an amazing American story that deserves to be better known. The recording features nineteen works by ten composers and is accompanied by a 40-page booklet. In addition to those by Europe and Cook, highlights include works by Will Vodery, an acknowledged influence on Ellington, and the first instrumental rag ever published, Sambo: A Characteristic Two Step March (1896), by Will Tyers.
Customer Reviews:
NOT the original artists!.......2007-06-08
The title of the CD indicates that these are recordings made by such greats as James Reese Europe--they are actually rather bland modern re-recordings. Look for the originals--they do exist--and bypass this flat second-generation rehashing.
Splendid work hidden by Amazon?.......2005-02-03
Yes, why is it so difficult to find this outstanding record when I look under Paragon Ragtime Orchestra"... it's another gem of those 1900-maniacs! Well, SPECIALISTS sounds maybe a little more polite. And I love those extensive liner notes: we get lots of entertainment and information at the same time! All of a sudden, the efforts of today's popular musicians to mess around with heavy and sempre out-of-balance P.A. equipment seem so useless... hahaha!
An absolute treasure!.......2004-02-23
This CD captures all the energy and optimism of the early Harlem Renaissance...you'll think you've been transported back in time.
Ragtime music is probably most familiar to people through two contemporary movies: The Sting, which brought Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" to public awareness, and Ragtime, with a score by Randy Newman. In my opinion, Newman's score pales in comparison with these originals. The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra faithfully interprets original orchestral scores of composers like James Reese Europe and Will Marion Cook so if, like me, you're used to hearing this music on scratchy old mono recordings, you're in for a real treat.
It's easy to see why this music took the country by storm at the turn of the century...I played this CD three times the first night I got it, because it captivated me. There's not a song here I don't like and there's such a good mixture of styles that it doesn't become repetitive.
As with all releases from New World Records, this one includes a booklet packed with historical and biographical information. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

'ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE is a brand new digital recording of American holiday music of the 1880s through the 1910s as performed by the world's foremost interpreters of this era - the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. The music is played from the actual original orchestrations (i.e. orchestra sheet music), using antique instruments and authentic period playing styles. The 65 minute disc features 15 Yuletide selections - most not available on record since the age of the Victrola. Included as well are a number of world premier recordings, including "The Nutcracker Rag" (a travesty on Tchaikovsky's famous holiday ballet), and Theodore Moses-Tobani's colorful 1908 fantasia "Round the Christmas Tree." This new Compact Disc was recorded with the latest in high-definition digital technology at the Edison Studio in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Opera and Ragtime.......2007-01-10
This CD falls somewhere between opera and rag time. I love rag time and I love some opera...what I wasn't expecting was the opera part. It is nice to hear something different that you aren't hearing constantly on holiday radio stations, but don't expect this to be an instrummental album.
A Christmas Delight.......2001-12-18
This recording is truly a delight for the holidays. It's refreshing to hear music that's you don't hear on the radio during the Christmas season. The selections are delightful. The orchestra sounds superb, the singing and the piano playing add a special charm to this recording, and the songs bring back memories of long ago. This is a must have for your Christmas CD collection.
