Jason Moran is his name, interconnectedness is his game and never has the young piano virtuoso played it more rapturously than on The Bandwagon. Leading his wondrously attuned trio before a live audience at New York's hallowed Village Vanguard, Moran cuts and pastes styles and genres like a man possessed. You've heard of artists who exist "in the moment." Moran is so attuned to it--rhythmically, melodically, linguistically even, setting one tune to the cadences of a Turkish woman talking on the phone woman--you can almost hear his fingernails clinging to the edge. Providing a glossary of modern and pre-modern jazz styles and bridging them to Schubert, to hip-hop, to movie themes, he and his mates, bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, aren't shy about slowing things down in the name of romance. Even when lulling the senses, though, this stuff grabs. --Lloyd Sachs

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Awesome soundtrack for an awesome movie!.......2006-05-24
This soundtrack does NOT disappoint. I have been listening to it non-stop since I received it. My only complaint is the dialogue from the movie that is inserted before and after some of the songs. But it's not that big of a nuisance. Over all, this soundtrack is a must for fans of the movie!
Great music, and movie too!.......2006-03-02
The soundtrack is great, I had to get it after watching the movie, both are excellent.

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

What The ****?.......2006-12-29
Maybe I'm just not capable of understanding the new jazz or what the yong guns are up to. After repeated listenings I'm still scratching my head. There is rarely anything to hang your hat on with this poorly recorded album. The worst live recording I've heard since Robert Palmer's "Live at the Apollo". The first track sounds like an orchestra tuning up and I'm just waiting for it to take off. No such luck. Just more meandering and noodling. Then there is a track set to a woman's phone call. In theory it's an interesting concept (like a John Cage composition) but in reality it just sounds like an annoying woman talking too loud during a concert.
Just skip this frustrating disc if you are looking for melody and rhythm. If you like avant guard jazz then give it a try.
Scary good.......2006-04-12
Have you ever encountered something, a book, painting, movie, that was both so astonishing and communicated with you with such a power of truth and beauty that it felt as if someone had just pushed you off a cliff . . . ?
Welcome to The Bandwagon. Jason Moran is a great pianist and important jazz musician, conscious of the great tradition that his works stands on and also of bringing that tradition into the future, the part of it he can carry himself. And he can handle a heavy load.
This music is rooted in the blues, in swing and in the basic interplay of small group jazz improvisation that has been around at least 80 years now. But the style is what is happening NOW! Moran is exploring what can be done with that style, including a surprising and effective use of taped accompaniment, spoken words with which he plays along, in the general manner of some of Steve Reich's pieces, though this is definitely jazz. And great jazz.
Like great jazz, the music is built on a foundation of extremely fine musicianship, and the interplay between piano, bass and drums is about the finest you will ever hear, on the level of the Bill Evans trio with Motian and LaFaro, or Cecil Taylor's Feel Trio. What a disc!
Different Isn't the same as good.......2006-03-04
The best thing I can say about THE BANDWAGON is that it is different from the kind of straight-ahead jazz I normally listen to, and the musicians are talented. That being said, this is one bandwagon I'll stay off, thank you.
For one thing, there's not much music on this disc. There is a lot of playing of instruments, but not the playing of actual music. Just as a group of people standing around talking does not make a play, three guys playing instruments does not always constitute music.
The biggest problem for me is that there isn't a beat to be kept for most of the disc. And when a beat is kept, it's mostly a simple sounding tap-tap-swish type beat. The second biggest problem is there is not much melody except in the barest form of a laydown before the band begin pinging away are seemingly random notes.
Every once in a while the sound congeals into something pleasing, as in parts of "Out Front", but it doesn't last long. It never lasts for an entire song. The best you can hope for is a minute or two or music in the middle of a five-minute clatter of instruments. At worst, it sounds like three guys playing three different practice warm-up sessions.
Maybe I'm just too dumb for this kind of music. Maybe it plays better live. Maybe these guys aren't as good as some people think. Whatever it is, I know I could go the rest of my life without buying another of their discs.
Can you hear the music?.......2004-09-23
I had not liked Jason Moran's studio work leading up to this CD but I was surprised to find that I really loved the performances captured at this Village Vanguard gig. But did Blue Note Records honestly expect that buyers in the year 2004 would accept such atrocious sound quality? I have heard bootlegs of ancient rock gigs from the 1960's sound better than this. Bruce Lundvall and his team need to put out another live CD of Jason's work and put some money into a decent recording. It is tragic to hear such a great performance foisted on the public with such appalling sound quality. Messrs Lion and Wolf would be embarrassed Bruce, if they knew you had done this.
Impressive talent, sometimes wasted.......2004-04-22
Jason Moran has impressive playing skills. But just play the music, Jason, and skip the annoying mumbling voice overs and other gimmicks. Come up with beautiful new compositions to play, or fresh interpretations of great songs that others have written. Leave the mumbling voice-over junk to lesser talents. There are four great cuts on this CD, so I don't regret buying it, but I hope that in future recordings Moran concentrates on applying his music to strong material.

Entire production by Mary (boring) Martin!.......2004-01-25
This CD reissues two ancient 10" Lps from the early 1950s of selections from ANYTHING GOES and THE BANDWAGON.
ANYTHING GOES - with so many other better recordings this collection is little needed. Mary Martin was a poor choice for the album since the show was written for Ethel Merman, and just a Ethel would not have been appropriate in SOUND OF MUSIC or PETER PAN, Mary should not have been cast in this recorded version of ANYTHING GOES. Also with no one else in the cast the duets lack theatrical context. The orchestrations are not the originals from 1934, and now sound very dated.
THE BANDWAGON - This collection seems better suited to Mary Martin, although again the original theatrical context is lost since it's just her and the chorus performing. Those familiar with the 1953 movie THE BANDWAGON may be surprised that only 3 songs from the revue were used in the film, so this disc offers a chance to hear the opening chorus:"It Better Be Good"; the delightful "Hoops"; and "Where Can He Be?" This last number is perfectly suited to Ms. Martin's voice and talents. She also makes the most of "Dancing in the Dark" and the slightly risque "Confession." But, a little Mary goes a long way!!!

Excellent mid-label debut.......2004-10-14
Eleven Hundred Springs has cultivated a significant following thanks to homegrown recordings and a constant touring schedule. Now signed to Palo Duro Records ("Country Music, Texas Spirit'"-yet still based in Tennessee), EHS has the distribution and backing to help the band reach the big-time.
Just because the band signed a new record deal doesn't mean that it has changed its style or abandoned its roots. Eleven Hundred Springs definitely delivers on Bandwagon. With a voice reminiscent of a young Rodney Crowell, lead vocalist and songwriter Matt Hillyer guides EHS through a potent country, blues, and rockabilly blend.
The anthemic "Long Haired Tattooed Hippie Freaks" sets the stage: They call us long haired, tattooed, hippie freaks / You know they ain't all wrong / You'd think they never saw a bad outlaw / Singin' a country song / But if they'd close their eyes and open their ears / And let the music speak / They'd hear good old country music / Not just long haired, tattooed freaks.
While the band may have signed to a Nashville label, they're still Texas Music outlaws. That outlaw spirit shines through on cuts like the drinkin' and tokin' "Thunderbird Will Do Just Fine" and the anti-establishment "Hank Williams Wouldn't Make It Now In Nashville Tennessee."
The closing tracks provide the real highlights. Featuring the late Ronnie Dawson on vocals, "Why You Been Gone So Long" showcases the stellar pedal steel of EHS's Aaron Wynne while paying homage to one of the band's major influences. "See You In The Next Life" combines heartfelt lyrics with teriffic lead and backing vocals. The closing track, "The Rock Island Line," allows the band to demonstrate its playful side and instrumental skills.
While there may be a couple of missteps ("Gina From San Jose" and "Swerving" come to mind), Bandwagon is an excellent mid-label debut for one of Texas's best-kept secrets.
Ready for some greater attention in country music circles!.......2004-08-23
Playing Time - 49:49 -- Eleven Hundred Springs includes Steve Berg (bass, bajo sexto, vocals), Chris Claridy (guitars), Matt Hillyer (lead vocals, guitars), Mark Reznicek (drums, percussion), and Aaron Wynne (pedal steel, guitar, organ, vocals). "Bandwagon" appears on a record label, Palo Duro, that has a mission to promote country music and Texas spirit. With their classic country sound that incorporates original singer-songwriter fare, pedal steel and acoustic and electric instrumentation, 1100 Springs are part of a current semi-rebellious Texas music movement to "Take Country Back" from Nashville much like the Outlaw music movement did back in the 1970s. Influences of country rock, folk, classic country and bluegrass are apparent in the country music of groups like 1100 Springs. As the movement gains momentum, more and more radio stations are getting on the "bandwagon" to spread these alt-country and Americana sounds. The cover of this album shows a broken down 1950s-vintage truck stuck in some muddy ruts. Acknowledging that it's a tough and crooked road to success, let's hope that this band finds a less hazardous and circuitous path to get where they're going.
Matt Hillyer composed many of the pieces on "Bandwagon," and the band's humorous autobiographical sketch and their attitude towards country music is best captured in "Long Haired Tattooed Hippie Freaks." His advice to detractors is to "close your eyes, open your ears, and let the music speak...to hear that good ol' country music." Another treatise on the current state of country music is Aaron Wynne's "Hank Williams Wouldn't Make it Now in Nashville Tennessee" in which the lyrics profess "that carbon copy music don't mean a damn to me." A number of other noteworthy originals including Northside Blues, If I Was A Candle, Swerving and A Straighter Line round out this album. Some of their songs speak to hard livin' on the road, while others tell stories of life in more general terms with a wish for a second chance and to "See You in the Next Life." A slow truckin' re-mastered cover (originally recorded in 1993) of Mickie Newberry's "Why You Been Gone So Long" is a tip of the hat to that great Texas songwriter, as well as to the late rockabilly legend Ronnie Dawson, "the Waxahachie Wildman," who joins in on vocals. The album closes with "The Rock Island Line," that clearly shows these guys also have deep respect for songs from the folk tradition.
A little fiddle might have enhanced this project, and I was even imagining a little hot banjo in the mix of the closing number. This Dallas-based quintet takes its name from a slogan for Pearl Beer ("from the land of 1,100 springs"). Together since 1992, they've evolved from being known as The Red Devils and Lone Star Trio to Eleven Hundred Springs when they landed a regular gig at Adair's Saloon in Dallas. This band is poised and ready for some greater attention in country music circles. Turn off those mainstream stations and spin your dial over to some real Texas country. Great Album!.......2004-08-07
This is one of my favorite albums of 2004! I've listened to these guys for years, and this is clearly their best CD ever!
My favorite tracks are the Rock Island Line, Why You Been Gone So Long (with Ronnie Dawson!) and A Straighter Line. The Dawson track is amazing!
This is a must-have CD for country music fans!
Great Texas Music.......2004-07-31
Eleven Hundred Springs are one of the best Texas music bands out there. Combining an old school Texas sound with rock and roll...creating music to drive by, dance to, play at a party...whatever you like to do. I highly recommend checking these guys out!
Good Old Country Music.......2004-07-28
When I was in Poland this summer and didn't have access to a radio or the opportunity to go to concerts, this CD got lots of spins. It brought me back to I-35 and the hill country. May be they're right in the song "Nashville, Tennessee" when they say that "honest words and simple lines don't sell much anymore." But I'd like to think that they're wrong because this cd is full of honest words and simple lines that tell it how it is. The only pitfall is them not puting on two songs, "Run up tree," and "Omaha," the latter of which has been released on the Waylon Jennings Red River Tribute album.
