Customer Reviews:
A Master Session from a Cuban Saxophonist Legend! .......2006-05-16
A magnificent recording from this legendary Cuban Saxophonist. Ever since Averhoff left his native Cuba in the late 90's, South Floridians have been blessed with his many live performances at area clubs. This recording is long overdue. His son, also following in his father's talented footsteps, has now joined him in Miami and what an incredible recording it would be if both Averhoffs were able to record together. Jazz Ta' Bueno is complemented by the appearances of Nestor Torres on Flute and another Cuban legend, Paquito D'Rivera on Alto Sax. An incredible mix of talent. Definitely, the latin jazz recording of 2006!
Very enjoyable listening.......2005-06-02
As a young jazz musician, I have hugely enjoyed listening to Averhoff's combination of technical and musical ideas that he uses throughout this CD. From the addictive melody of his first track, 'Swinging Gia', to the very difficult blues, 'Not For Everybody', I was very impressed by Averhoff's interesting riffs and use of unusual chord sequences. Plus he is backed up by and unbelievable rhythm section with the Orta brothers on piano and bass. Their solo work is unparalleled. Also, Nestor Torres on Flute and Paquito D'Rivera on A. Sax really tie this album together. Torres' latin influence and D'Rivera's almost be-bop style adds a very interesting element to this album. I feel this album is definetly a must have for beginning musicians and for those with a more trained ear.
A textbook on how Latin Jazz Rhythms should be interpreted.......2005-05-06
In his first album in the USA Carlos Averhoff shows that he is not only one of THE BEST LATIN JAZZ SAXOPHONE PLAYERS OF TODAY, but also that he is a brilliant arranger and bandleader. In his finely crafted CD, Averhoff interprets a variety of rhythms from Cuban Cha Cha Cha (Swinging Gia), going through Danzon (Later is too late) and Bolero (Delirio), all the way to the complicated rhythms of Brazil (Bebe & Samba Du Oro), and he does all with a masterful grace and ease, that which is typical of real virtuosos of this genres. Other tunes interpreted by Averhoff in this CD include the performances of two greats of the Latin Jazz, Paquito D'Rivera and Nestor Torres. Averhoff's performance along with the performances of D'Rivera and Torres definitely contributed to make this CD a textbook on how Latin Jazz Rhythms should be interpreted.
In my opinion, Averhoff's work in this album deserves to be commended by all the lovers of true jazz music. This album should win Averhoff another Grammy for both an outstanding musicianship and performance.
THE BEST JAZZ CD OF THE YEAR .......2005-04-25
This true titan of the Latin jazz saxophone arrived from Cuba six years ago and with this first album published in the USA, Carlos Averhoff is finally receiving the recognition that he deserves. This CD is a selection of wonderful tunes interpreted by a dynamic soloist and great innovator. There is perfect interplay with the pianist Mike Orta and the guest artists: Paquito d'Rivera and Nestor Torres make this a cross-over album that will delight both straight ahead jazz fans as well as Latin fans. This album is destined to give Averhoff his second Grammy award.
