Recorded in Sweden in 1965, these celebrated recordings marked Ornette Coleman's return to activity following a three-year self-imposed exile from performing in public. In contrast to the compact, earthy swing that characterized his groundbreaking quartet recordings for Atlantic (collected on the vaunted Beauty Is a Rare Thing box), here Coleman projects his speechlike melodicism in paragraphs rather than poems, stretching out as if a creative dam had burst. David Izenzon's agility in the bass's high register and liquid beat anchor Coleman's flights of fancy, while Charles Moffett's inventive yet unobtrusive cymbal work adds drama to the overall group dynamic. Few musicians embody the discipline of spontaneity with the unbridled joy Coleman brings to each of these eight cuts, and on At the Golden Circle, Volume Two as well. An inspiring disc. --Jed Distler

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great score from Hans Zimmer...........2007-06-18

The soundtrack was exciting with it's action sequences, but also with it's love theme. The love theme was my favorite I guess, and I enjoyed the way it was woven throughout almost all of the tracks. My favorites would have to be "One Day," which is the most moving of the whole album and "Up is Down," for it's playfulness. But overall it's a good listen, even the strange "Multiple Jacks" track. The vocals on the soundtrack don't seem out of place, and go well with each sequence. The At World's End soundtrack is definitely worth having if you love movie scores.

5 out of 5 stars Zimmer outdoes himself again. A stunning & mostly original score........2007-06-18

Zimmer has outdone himself yet again. This is one of his most beautiful scores.

It's particularly impressive that he did not do what most composers of third-movies-in-a-trilogy do (even though it has good reason): rest on already-established themes. Sure, he keys in the themes from 1 & 2 where appropriate, with delightful variations, but this score is mostly original. So many stirring themes, yet all of a piece for these movies.

Listening to the score on its own, you can better appreciate its dramatic support of the film, particularly in how he built so much of it off of the song penned by screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (and co-scored by director Gore Verbinski) that's so integral to the story.

The orchestrations, particularly in "At Wit's End," "Up Is Down" and "One Day," are beautiful. I could listen to "One Day" endlessly. The Morricone tribute "Parlay" is terrific as well, enhancing the spaghetti western visual inspiration in the film.

(One regret: there is a beautiful new theme played briefly in the film that does not appear on the soundtrack, which is odd since there's certainly room on the disc. I believe it's during the climax, but I'll need to see it again to be sure.)

Buy this score now. It's stunning.

2 out of 5 stars Be forewarned!.......2007-06-16

I was very disapointed when I received my CD from Amazon and saw that it's not even in a jewel case. It is packaged in a cheap, flimsy cardboard case. I would buy it somewhere else!

5 out of 5 stars Unprecedented.......2007-06-13

Definitely sets a appropriately rich, epic, dramatic tone for the film, and also an excellent listen as audio alone.

The percentage of addicting tracks on this CD far exceed that of the other two Pirates scores.

This is without doubt one of the most intense and vibrant film scores I have encountered to date. And it isn't just one or two good tracks, it's a vast majority of them that simply blows me away. It really is hard for me to find music that sends chills up my spine like this does.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best soundtrack of the three, yet!!! (Spoilers...).......2007-06-13

I have not stopped listening to the wounderful soundtrack of the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 motion picture. It is completely and totally amazing. A quick summary of the songs:

1: Hoist the Colors: A sad reminder of the first few minutes of the movie.

2: Singapore: (One of my personal favorites...) This has a great mix of oriental music and the modern "pirate" music. It has some slow parts, but the mixture of the two is brilliantly joined together.

3: At Wit's End: This is a longer song, with a full orchestra! It is completely beautiful.

4: Multiple Jacks: This comes from the part where jack sees himself as a whole crew! Only Capt'n Jack! This scene is wonderfully portrayed in this musical number.

5: Up is Down: This is my absoute favorite song from the whole soundtrack. The violins are brilliantly used, and almost can sound like a wind instrument. It comes from the scene where the crew is fooled into tipping the ship over.

6: I See Dead People in Boats: As those who have seen the movie, this is from the part where Elizabeth sees her father's ghost/soul being transported to go to Davy Jones' Locker.

7: The Brethren Court: It has its ups and downs. It can be very loud and strong, but it can then change to be soft but intreguing.

8: Parlay: This song uses modern "screaming" guitars. It is a brilliant mix that only Hans Zimmer could create. It plays the Pirates theme, and is completely awesome.

9: Calypso: This is one of the slower songs to start out, but it sure makes a come-back. This is an over all slower song, but it is definately very well put together.

10: What Shall We Die For: This is again slow to start out, but it gets much faster towards the middle. It uses a varitey of instruments; mostly violins. It repeats some of the "Hoist the Colors." A choir starts to sing it in the background. Not too much choir to destroy the song.

11: I Don't Think Now Is the Best Time: Again for those who have seen Pirates 3, this line is what Elizabeth said to Will when he proposed to her. It is a ten minute long song, and you'll have to buy the whole album on to get it on iTunes, but it is completely and totally worth it!

12: One Day: Being a strong song, it describes almost the whole movie in a 4 minute long song. It has its slower parts, and its faster parts, but it is completely intreguing.

13: Drink Up Me Harties Yo Ho: This is the last line of both the first and last movies. It pulls the whole sound track together. It is over all a very strong song. I'd buy the this album, just for this song... but get the whole album!!!!!

So, over all this *should* prusuade you to spend the money on this CD. I have recomended it to all of my friends.

When he laid down 1994's The Impossible Bird--the ninth solo album in a career that already, via Rockpile, Brinsley Schwarz, Kippington Lodge, and production work for Elvis Costello, the Damned, and the Pretenders, stretched back over 25 years--Nick Lowe probably wasn't setting out to create a four-part trilogy à la Douglas Adams. But with At My Age (which is 58, incidentally, as of the album's June 2007 release), Lowe has created a fine companion to Bird, 1998's Dig My Mood, and 2001's The Convincer. Six years was a bit too long of a wait, 2004's live Untouched Takeaway notwithstanding. And given all that time, Lowe breaks no new ground: At My Age is essentially more of the same combination of blue-eyed soul and pre-Sweetheart country-rock that characterized those previous releases. But when the results are so deliciously horn-drenched and include songs like "Long Limbed Girl," "People Change," "The Club," "Not Too Long Ago," and the delightfully malicious "I Trained Her to Love Me" ("If you think that it's depraved and I should be ashamed, so what? / I'm only paying back womankind for all the grief I got"), who's complaining? Good things have indeed come to those who waited. --Benjamin Lukoff

    Album Description

Blue-eyed soul? You don't even know the definition until you've heard the sweet smoke of Nick Lowe's trademark croon. Now, later in life, Lowe's rootsy, grown-up soul has risen to the surface of what was a cracked and stripped-down artistic aesthetic in the late '70s, when he produced records for Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, and influential British proto-punkers the Damned. During his years as house producer for Stiff Records Lowe's oft-copied rough-hewn production style set the stage for the DIY philosophy of the punk revolution.

Sublimely aged in a solid oak barrel, At My Age showcases Lowe's perfection of his own unique brand of soul-soaked country-pop, resulting in an album as refined and perfectly distilled as he is. Lowe's convention-breaking phrasing shines backed by gorgeous '60s Memphis-style horns and tastefully subdued guitar hooks. At My Age displays, with Nick's signature polish, the sublime, linear connection between country, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll. So, grab a drink, a smoke, and hear Americana done right...by a Brit.

If Hollywood's marriage with pop music is too often a marketing-driven shotgun affair, there remain musicians whose artistry can't help but elevate whatever film project they're associated with. This 19-track compendium underscores that notion, gathering a career-spanning collection of the Irish rock-R&B legend's contributions to an eclectic body of films that stretches from Pope of Greenwich Village's effusive early solo hit "Jackie Wilson Said" to the unlikely live collaboration with Roger Waters on "Comfortably Numb" that seasons Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated The Departed. The collection serves as a concise primer to the high points of Van Morrison's mercurial career, from the gritty career-breakout hits ("Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go") of his British Invasion band Them through such early solo touchstones as "Wild Night," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Domino," and the collection's fine, previously unreleased live version of "Moondance" from An American Werewolf in London. But, as tracks like "Wonderful Remark," "Bright Side of the Road," "Someone Like You," and his Chieftains collaboration "Irish Heartbeat" ably argue, it's also an invitation to explore less heralded, if equally seductive, corners of the singer's rich oeuvre. --Jerry McCulley

"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

        Album Description

One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the rock era. Solo. Acoustic. January 19, 1971. Live At Massey Hall, the legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in highresolution stereo, in this CD+DVD package (also as a solo CD). The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). Live At Massey Hall is a newly mined rock gem.

Recorded live at Dallas's Texas Stadium in 2004, this long-delayed release is worth the wait. Over 15 tracks, the three superstars sing together, separately, and in pairs for what turns out to be both a musical treat and a long draw of fun. Strait, who normally stands stock still in concert, loosens up and--surprise!--talks between songs ("That's country right there now"), and if my ears heard right, may actually say the word "ass." His is the strongest section musically, as he uses the western-swing classic "Milk Cow Blues" to stretch out with a fine showcase of his Ace in the Hole Band, and brings Jackson out for a masterful version of their hit "Murder on Music Row." But Jackson's set offers a personality-rich rendition of "Where I Come From," as well as a bluegrass version of Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and a sturdy cover of "Texas Women," Hank Williams Jr.'s exercise in Lone Star braggadocio. Buffett gets a little too cute on "Margaritaville," on which over-the-top chorines shout, "Salt! Salt! Salt!" But when Jackson and Strait join him for a rousing romp through "Hey, Good Lookin'," you can almost see the ghost of Hank Sr. dancing in the aisles. --Alanna Nash

Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. --Colin Escott

5 out of 5 stars Classic Neil in his Prime!.......2007-06-03

Whether you are a Neil Young fan or not, this is a 'must hear' live recording for anyone who loves great folk music! The lyrics and melodies are both pensive and mirthful, taking you back to a simpler time when life and love was easier to contemplate. Neil's trademark stiletto-falsetto-like voice was beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Experience With Neil Young Live.......2007-05-27

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

              5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-27

Beautiful music by Neil Young. Simple and complex at the same time. Perfect.

              5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-05-14

This is probably one of the most honest and true live recordings in my collection; just Neil with guitar and piano. The performance is top notch, and the sound just soars; perfect blend! Some real highlights are the piano performance of "Heart of Gold", the soft and mysterious "Old Man" and of course, the first two tracks, which reach back to where Neil came from with Buffalo Springfield, and where he "currently" was during the After The Goldrush album. The album is a great bridge between the electric Neil and the Harvest sound he'd record later in the year.

              5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-07

Excellent album; sound quality is great, musicianship is solid as always. Looking forward to hearing many more early Neil Young live albums as they are released from the vault.

Sweeping Up the Spotlight: Live at the Fillmore East 1969 features the definitive edition of Jefferson Airplane, icons of 1960s psychedelic rock and political agitation. Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden hold down the free-floating rhythms on bass and drums, Jorma Kaukonen launches feedback-laced guitar solos, and Paul Kantner adds rhythm guitar and backing vocals. Topping it all are the voices of Marty Balin and the '60s acid queen, Grace Slick. In concert, the Airplane were always more rough and ready than on their acid-hued vinyl. Outside the studio, they were ramshackle and punky, which is why they were sometimes referenced when talking about punk bands like X, who also had male and female lead singers. Despite having six albums under their belt, mostly consisting of original material, the Airplane's live set has a lot of mediocre blues and folk filler. Some of their more characteristic repertoire is sacrificed to workman-like renditions of "Uncle Sam Blues" and "Come Back Baby," albeit with some ripping Kaukonen guitar solos. Balin's raucous rant on "You Wear Your Dresses too Short" is embarrassing in its soul-singer aspirations. Assuming this was their set sequence, it takes a while for the Airplane to congeal on stage. They ride roughshod over much of their materiel, but pull it together two-thirds of the way through on one of their most complex tunes, "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil." With its shifting time signatures and overlapping vocal lines and harmonies, it's a challenge to pull off live, but they do, with soaring vocals from Balin and Slick and a long instrumental jam with a fractured guitar solo from Kaukonen and a feature slot for bassist Casady, the most innovative and powerful bassist from that era. That paves the way for a darker version of "White Rabbit," the mock celebration of "Crown of Creation," and their show closer, a hyped rendition of Fred Neil's ballad "The Other Side of This Life." As they always did, the Jefferson Airplane land high. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Airplane at its Best.......2007-06-16

Hard to believe that this was not released in 1969-70--it's at least as good as the live Bless its Pointy Little head, and most of the cuts are as good as the best Airplane studio work. Other cuts are like a full metal jacket version of the first two Hot Tuna albums. Only live version of the Won't You Try/Sat. Afternoon from After Bathing at Baxters. Only less than stellar cut to my ears is Balin's You Wear Your Dresses too Short. While there are two cuts that were released on the expanded Volunteers, including them here preserves the integrity of the Filmore sets

              5 out of 5 stars I Was There!.......2007-06-11

When I saw the November 28 & 29th dates on the back of the CD for this Fillmore East live show I realized I was in the audience for at least one of these nights. My friend Selena & I took the R train from Queens to 8th Street & walked the two blocks to the Fillmore. Somehow we had two extra tickets, which we elected to give away to two out of towners, who repaid our kindness with party favors. As a result, other than remembering the band infront of the moving blobs of light show color, my memory is a little hazy.

Considering this concert was recorded back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the sound quality is outstanding. Also, this is NOT the Airplane at the end. This is them a couple of months after Woodstock, smack dab in the middle of their reign.

This will be considered sacrilege but I think I may like this live disc even better than Pointed Head. It is at least on par with it. Pointed Head is essence relaxed San Francisco jam music. This show is New York City battering ram. The Airplane is on fire. For once everybody in the band is on the same page - the vocalists are in tune, weaving in & out & inbetween one another. Everywhere there is a spare opening, Jorma sends out lightning bolts of guitar fire like a Norse god. Spencer Dryden was the band's secret weapon, even though shortly after this performance the band showed him the door. His inventive and authoritive backbeat kept the band on track during the guitar and vocal acrobatics. The Airplane suffered when they switched him out & went with the drummer-of-the-month club.

And then there is Jack. His bass-as-lead solo in the middle of Pooneil is jaw-droppingly brilliant. He just won't behave. I can still remember a free gig in Central Park where the vibrations from his bass rumbled up from the ground & thru my feet into my body. There never has been another bass player in rock that could touch him, probably never will. This concert lets him rock out and strut his stuff.

Nearly all the versions of classic Airplane songs are better represented here than previous incarnations - blasting off with the best version of Volunteers I've ever heard, thru a ripping version of Good Shepard that lays waste the acoustic version, a better organized Pooneil than usual, a sensuous & powerful White Rabbit, Crown of Creation on steroids, and core staple Other Side of This Life ripped & gutted by Jorma's blistering solos. Young & strong doesn't even begin to come close to describing the performances on this CD.

The only out and out cringer (and all live Airplane gigs always had a couple)is Marty Balin's excruciating vocals on You Wear Your Dresses Too Short. I wish somebody had turned his mic off. Great jam, embarrassing vocals.

If you love the Airplane, you need to own this. 40 years later, this CD documents that on a good night nobody could touch them. They tear the roof off.

5 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Bless Its Pointed Little Head.......2007-06-05

This is a great cd, capturing the Airplane on an exceptionally good night. The version of "Volunteers" is better than any other live version of the song I've heard and "The Other Side of This Life" is a powerful mixture of the "Bless its..." version and the earlier trippier versions of the song. "Ballad of Me and You and Pooneil" is also magnificent. Jack's bass palaying is fantastic, Jorma shows why he is the most underated guitarist in rock history and Grace sings in key! BUY THIS CD!

1 out of 5 stars End of the ride.......2007-05-31

I wonder if all the posters here are listening to the same cd as I am. This is the Airplane at the tail end of their power and it ain't pretty. Marty, Grace, and Paul are shouting at each other, at times trying (not bothering?)their damnedest to keep up with Jorma, who seems to feel that any space left open is a good spot to inject a solo. The unreleased songs, "Uncle Sam Blues", "Come Back Baby" and the truly awful "You Wear Your Dresses Too Short" are time fillers, nothing more. The band is playing at each other, not with each other and it's sad to hear. The version of "...You Me and Pooneil" is one of the worst I've heard.

Lest you think I'm a latecomer to the group, and I don't "get" them, I'll tell you I'm 53 and have been a rabid fan since the 60's. This is the Airplane without the joy, rage, muscle and inventiveness that made them one of the best bands of the era. They were all ready for something else at this point and it shows. Stick with "Bless It's Pointed Little Head" and remember them that way. It gets 1 star because I can't bear to give any album by the Airplane a zero. Trust me and avoid this one.

5 out of 5 stars All the old fans have come to the same conclusion.......2007-05-24

              Hi Airplane people:

Those looking for another CD to build the Airplane collection will be very pleased with the "Sweeping Up The Spotlight" release. A couple of minor things should have been taken care of. The liner notes are way too short and there is no mention if the songs come from November 28th or 29th of 69.

Some of the tracks have different arrangements such as 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds."

The sound quality is very strong. Hopefully sales will be good so the opportunity will exist for another one from the vaults to see the light of day.

Time to take off. Be well always,

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers--artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars ahead of her time.......2007-05-12

Wonderful music, we have everyone of her CD's. So sad that she isn't still around to make more wonderful music!

5 out of 5 stars Her definitive album.......2007-04-19

As I pulled into work one morning back in '98, I heard a song from this album on a public radio out of DC. Fortunately, reception was clean and clear that morning, and I listened in astonishment to the singer's remarkable interpretation of a song I had heard before (and, quite frankly, didn't really like). I had trouble finding the CD anywhere in Baltimore (there had been only a limited release on a small label), but when I eventually did find it, the whole was as remarkable as the one song.

From start to finish, this is an extraordinary album, showcasing the remarkable breadth of a talent too soon lost. To me, "Live at Blues Alley" is Eva's definitive album, and it ranks in my top ten albums of my fairly extensive collection. Listen to this album.

This album is one of my favorites, the music ranges from joyful to thoughtful to hauntingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best female voices I have ever heard........2007-03-08

This is the second time I have purchased this CD. I bought one for a friend because I have fallen in love with Eva's voice. There are so many qualities in those pipes. She can put her own spin on every song she has redone and made it unique. I really don't have words to describe her. What a loss it is for her family and her fans because she was just beginning to be discovered. She never compromised her art for anyone. She had a pure voice and pure soul and it came thru in her music.

              4 out of 5 stars Simply Fab.......2007-01-09

Wish there was more of Eva to go around - her voice could stir the masses.
