SHE PLAYS OUT OF TUNE!.......2005-08-16

Yes, she does: her sound is horribly thin, and she can't play the highest notes strong enough, so that they wither away and disappear into silence. Even the darkest, lowest notes come out weakly, so one can't argue that she has trouble just with the upper registers: her whole playing is terribly bad. She does have
a good vibrato, but I fear that if her sound were not thin, the vibrato would make even the darkest melody sound pathetic.

Hahn is all right (not excellent, nor good, just right for
some provincial recital hall) as long as she keeps to the lower pitch range (perhaps she should be playing the bass fiddle!), Shaham does everything only passably, and Chang has some passion and feeling but no strength to express it, but Salerno-Sonnenberg is bad across the board. There maybe a passably competent technique in her playing (that is, she can get the melody across), but she plays out of tune - the sound is disgusting!

I know how crazy this piece of writing must sound among so many raves, but there's no other way to explain the horribly weak, thin sound of the violin in this recording. Perlman, who suffered all his life from weak health, even in such difficult pieces as Beethoven's Kreutzer sonata was able to produce a full-bodied sound - and this, when he was well past his sixties.

But then again, Salerno-Sonnenberg is not alone in showing such a lack of... no, this is not about inborn talent. I doubt some child can pick up a violin and play in tune without first listening to a competent elder's playing. After the most basic education in music performance, it is just a question of getting a good recording of a piece, and practicing till one gets a relatively equal sound.

I harbored great hopes for Salerno-Sonnenberg when I read about her troubled life, the attacks she had to face from critics, her attempted suicide. I was letting myself be deceived by that old Romantic cliché, that pain makes for good art. But this is not about discovering or rediscovering unknown masterpieces, but about interpreting establish ones, and a Paganini doesn't have the "extended techniques" present in many postmodern pieces where noise passes for music, so in this case a standard called in-tune playing exists, and she doesn't perform up to it. But this judgement depends on my senses. If you don't believe me, you can find out whether I am right, or whether I am just another flea-like critic from the incestuous music business, by comparing Salerno-Sonnenberg's playing to that of any famous solo violinist whose career started in the 60's or 50's - when gesticulating wasn't equated with playing.

Perfection.......2004-11-02

Salerno-Sonnenberg's passionate, elegant, heartbreaking interpretations of these wonderful selections is perfectly paired with Sandra Rivers at the piano. I shall never forget their performance of "Claire de lune," the Kreisler pieces, or the exquisite Rachmaninov "Vocalise." In her hands, the violin becomes voice and reeds and brass -- transcending itself and taking the audience right along.

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is such an artist and this release is one of her many gifts to the music loving world!

Check out Track #5 - Liebesieid - for a small sampling of the tremendous emotional pull of Nadja's playing. I have several CDs of Itzhak Perman, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, but no violinist matches Nadja's gift of making each piece her own - you know that she truely feels the music - it flows through her - and it isn't just a dry technical playing of the piece.

Salerno-Sonnenberg: Adroit and Emotional.......1999-07-05

What separates Salerno-Sonnenberg from other violinists is the pure emotion conveyed in her music. The power, sorrow or joy she expresses at any given moment is almost palpable. In fact, I remember listening to the first track on It Ain't Necessarily So and literally getting goosbumps. It's a stunning Kreisler piece that steadily builds in strength and tempo. Sonnenberg capitalizes on these elements, offering an unforgettable delivery. Many of the tracks on the album emit such raw energy -- It Ain't Necessarily so is not an album that will put one to sleep. Beyond strength, what makes this album worthwhile is the diverse selection of music. Of course Salerno-Sonnenberg interprets Kreisler, but she also plays Gershwin, Kroll, Schubert and even the jazz of Scott Joplin. The one complaint I have about this album is the sonics. For such a great musician, I think EMI could have recorded a little bit more dynamically. But don't let this keep you from owning the album. It's a truly great one.

Good variety of music.......2006-10-16

I bought this 4-disc set at Costco a decade ago when it was still called Price Club, and I still listen to it. Each of the 4 discs contains music from a particular season of the year, and the compilations cover numerous pieces from all the styles of classical music; from Baroque thru the Romance period. Leading each disc are the appropriate parts from the 4-Seasons by Vivaldi. Thee are followed by pieces from composers such as Copland, Beethoven, Strausss, Mozart, Dukas, etc... Some of the pieces are quite famous, and should have been left out as most classical fans already have them; i.e. Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. The up-side is that this set also has a lot of more obscure pieces that are quite good; such as "Sleighride" by Mozart. Overall, this set provides multiple hours of good listening that is appropriate for a car ride, or while reading a book.

Inspired.......2006-12-28

Since there are no sound recordings of Joplin, any version of his work is naturally an interpretation of the written scores he left. Joplin's ragtime was the "precursor" to jazz. Jazz is an improvised music. Ragtime in Joplin's day was not. Roberts is a jazz pianist . He is from an entirely different musical climate and era than Joplin. Marcus Roberts does the composer justice in his creative and inspired 1998 disc, "The Joy of Joplin". If you want to hear "straight" Joplin, look elsewhere. If you want to clearly go "over the top", try "Spaghetti Rag: Rag Music with Mandolins" by Ermenegildo Carosio, et al.

You might not want to buy this album if you're just looking for a CD of Joplin. But if you already love Joplin's music, and you like Marcus Roberts, this CD won't disappoint you.

Roberts' ragtime feel is great: I could listen to his left hand only all day long. But he then adds his own feel to it. In some cases I hear Ellington and Basie. He brings out the Caribbean sound in Easy Winners, and it makes me think of the piece differently now.

Marcus Roberts shows that you can make the classics new in every generation.

Roberts having fun........1999-12-03

Having followed Marcus Roberts from day one, this is a welcome addition. Unlike the reviewer from Florida, I approached this as I do all of Robert's albums - from Roberts' persepctive. This isn't simply a Joplin album, it's Marcus Roberts playing Joplin, and it was unlikely to be like any other Joplin album out there.

Not that this is a totally unique experience, but it is one of the better solo Roberts albums out there. It is also less inclined to fall into Roberts only trap - technique over passion. Of previous recording I sometimes feel that Roberts tries so hard technically that he lacks the heart and soul of the music. He does a better job of that here.

In the liner notes he mentions Ellington and Bach as favorites. The Ellington album is out now, I wonder if Bach is next?

An Easy Winner.......1999-06-25

I like this album for the reasons that the Florida listener didn't. The freshness Roberts brings to these Rags has reawakened my interest in Joplin. Its also nice to here some new music inspired by Joplin. I even broke out the sheet music and revisited Maple Leaf myself with a new attitude. Joplin is in capable hands with Roberts. Though not a ground breaking effort it's certainly worthy of serious listening. If you want Joplin played in a more traditional way there's plenty of that around. By the way, I recommend the Butch Thompson album as well.

I love Joplin, but this recording is a big disappointment. Roberts embellishes the music but seems to add little with his improvisation. He does not fully understand ragtime tempos. Worst of all, only half of the compositions are by Joplin. Try the CD by Butch Thompson.

Best Perlman Collection.......2004-02-28

Hi,

I think this is a very nice Perlman collection...Beautiful works selected from different Musical Eras and different styles...And Mr. Perlman is very succesful in all these types of masterworks...you can easily feel the Bach's crying words...Mozart's fun...Brahms's passion...Sinding's virtuosity...Wienlawski's Romantism...Khachaturian's hurry...and Rachmaninov's sentiments....and many others...
and also Israeli Orchestra did a very good job on this performance...They are like the third hand of Perlman...They work and feel like a family...
If you are a Perlman Fan, you must have been already bought this CD...if you are not or new to this performer it is time to meet him..and it is the way to meet him...go!!!

Plenty of Perlman.......2002-03-11

If you enjoy Itzhak Perlman and do not have very many of the selections on these discs, here is one way to get hold of them. Each of the four discs boasts a theme: 1. Baroque and Chamber Music, 2. Violin and Orchestra, 3. 20th Century Music, and 4. The Lighter Side. The selections are naturally limited to recordings Perlman did with EMI, but this represents quite a bit of his overall output. Among the recordings of the Sibelius Violin Concerto that I've heard, the one included here with André Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one I enjoy immensely. I like the cinematic sweep of the Korngold Concerto; the Bach Violin Partita; the jazz selections written by Previn. There isn't much that I don't like here. Here is a compilation where variety is a key factor. If you're into variety and Perlman's style, this set gives you plenty of both.

Our Greatest Living Violinist.......2000-05-11

Almost 30 years ago, at Penn State while I was a student there, Itzhak Perlman visited, gave some lessons to aspiring violinists and gave the most astounding, memorable concert I've ever attended. Quite to the contrary of the fellow from Baton Rouge, Perlman was the consummate teacher who critiqued and encouraged students with far lesser talents, and he did it with class. This collection contains a number of recordings I already have but consider them worth having again in such a superbly arranged collection. His arrangements on the Hungarian Dances are the best!

Great music from a great man........2000-01-06

The sentiments of certain Baton Rouge residents notwithstanding, this is the consummate collection from a great artist AND a great humanitarian.

Not bad. But Hilary Hanh plays Bach more beautifully.......1999-11-16

Perlman plays Bach quite well, but when compared to Hilary Hahn, Perlman comes out second best. Hilary captures the whole essence and spirit of Bach, and herr violin sings Bach in two, three, and four beautiful voices in perfect harmnony.

This, the second CD from United Sounds of Bassoon is a perfect follow up to their previous release. Using the same whit and spunk with a few new twists these bassoonists churn through Gershwin, Pulank, and even some Christmas carols! Helped out by a drum kit, contra basson, and harpsicord this is a great package for the bassoon lover!
