Louis Hardin, known to pre-Watergate New Yorkers as the blind street musician Moondog, is also a fascinating and sui generis composer. This disc collects 1969 recordings of his orchestral works and 1972 small-group recordings of the two-minutes-and-under "rounds and canons" that are his most influential work. Janis Joplin covered his "All Is Loneliness," you can hear foreshadowings of Stereolab in his "Madrigals," and you only need to hear "Theme" to hear how profoundly he influenced Michael Nyman. Simple and beautiful, Moondog's rounds owe as much to the swing he heard on the radio in his youth as to Bach's canonical structures, and they vary as little and as much as roses in a row. --Douglas Wolk

By 1973, the Band were at a crossroads. Having summed up the first phase of their recording career with the Rock of Ages concert recording, Robbie Robertson flirted with an ambitious project inspired by Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki. But instead of forging ahead into uncharted territory, the quintet opted to hearken back to their roadhouse days with an LP that renovated oldies associated with the likes of Clarence "Frogman" Henry, the Platters, and Fats Domino. Given that Robertson's originals were no longer coming as fast and true as in the late '60s, a covers collection was a wise move. After all, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel were all vocalists who could tackle classics from the canons of Chuck Berry ("The Promised Land"), Bobby "Blue" Bland ("Share Your Love"), and Sam Cooke ("A Change Is Gonna Come") without straining under the weight of the originals. The 2001 reissue of this unaffected delight is fleshed out with a half-dozen outtakes that fit in nicely with the 10 tracks from the original LP. --Steven Stolder

we have this albumn.IT was good then...its good now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even our girls, which are young adults remember this music and still like it also
Essential, good-times warmup for the final masterpiece.......2007-01-08
The story behind Moondog Matinee is pretty well-known, so I won't rehash it in too much detail; Robbie Robertson was having trouble with his songwriting muse since the soulless disappointment, Cahoots, and the rest of the group was treading water with varying amounts of drug abuse as a result of their success and lack of direction, so they all (I think at Robbie's behest) decided to cut an album of good time rock and roll, some of which they used to play as (Levon and) the Hawks. Despite its labels as an "oldies album," most of these songs really weren't that old, and many of them weren't even played by The Band when they were the Hawks ("A Change Is Gonna Come" wasn't even recorded by Sam Cooke until 1964). Rather, I think this album should be looked at as a collection of interpretive playing and singing of some great rock and roll in the inimitable style of The Band. They may have been having trouble coming up with high-quality original material (which, unfortunately is what the public really wanted--Moondog Matinee received a lukewarm reception despite the quality of the music), but The Band's playing and singing is still unmatchable, and a return to the style of music they started out playing really reinvigorated their energy and produced a great album.
The great thing about Moondog Matinee is that it's a representation of some really classic songs that everyone knows, but it also has some pretty obscure gems in there as well. The first few songs fall into the latter category--they're known among early rock circles, but were never huge hits. Each features a different group member on lead vocals. "I Ain't Got No Home" features a really fun Levon Helm vocal with some racing keys from Garth Hudson, and that crazy frog voice contraption that Hudson rigged up. The man is a genius, musically and technically. "Holy Cow" has a really fun Rick Danko vocal--you can tell they were having a great time playing this music, and it shows in the end product. "Share Your Love With Me" proves that Richard Manuel hadn't lost the ballad croon that used to make the girls hot.
The Band's version of "Mystery Train" is unquestionably essential, with a few new lyrics and a funky groove, spacey intro, and nimble clavinette part. "Third Man Theme" is the only track that doesn't fit; it kind of just sounds like carousel music. "Promised Land" and "The Great Pretender" are super readings of classics, and "Saved" is an album highlight with a tongue-in-cheek vocal from Manuel combined with some great bass drum. "A Change Is Gonna Come" is also certainly an essential reading of a standard tune, right up there with Otis Redding's, Aretha Franklin's, and Cooke's own version.
Out of all the remastered Band albums, this one has by far the most meaningful bonus tracks, containing 5 more covers that could have easily fit in with the album ("Going Back to Memphis" is my favorite), and the only original song written by Robbie Robertson between Cahoots and their final studio masterpiece.
I recommend this album after you're a fan of their first three and have been disappointed by Cahoots--once you hear that The Band was still able to crank out the magic, playing and singing just as well as the ever did (only waiting for some good material), Northern Lights - Southern Cross will blow you away.
The Birth Of THE BAND.. Genius At Play At The Jook Joint.......2006-09-01
Despite whatever personal problems or lack of direction this group was rumoured to be going through at the time, what you have here is a great Cover album of tunes that are not only unmistakenly the Band but moreso an album catching them revisiting their roots at a pinnacle when their powers were at a point when reminiscing back was a needed step as they still went forward creating a couple of more masterpieces to their catalogue before their ending.
To my ears the playing here is very inspired, emotional and all their elements, that rowdy barband , Dylan's frontmen, going on into their familiar anachronistic roots territory of Big Pink hinting at the future masterpiece of Northern Lights that was to follow are all in the grooves here..the keyboard wizadry, sharp guitar notes, touches of brass in the right places those sincere tremendous vocalists all add to a winner and maybe the best cover band album of all time.
Going through many CD reissues, these Remasters are the best with all the outtakes, prior unreleased tracks, notes, remastered sound all artwork reproduction restored faithfully(the great original artwork depicting the Roadhouse Street Corner that adorned the album when it first came out is here).
One can write endlessly on The Band, this CD is an oddity in their catalogue but a winner and one that is a good starting point for those discovering the professional textures and tones of this all important band for the 1st time around.
ONE OF THE BEST BY THE BAND.......2006-08-01
THIS IS AN ALBUM OF OLDIES DONE BY THE BAND. EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE OLDIES, YOU KNOW IT'S THE BAND PLAYING THESE TUNES. THEY MAKE EVERY SONG THEIR OWN. GREAT VOCALS BY LEVON HELM, GARTH HUDSON, AND SOME GREAT GUITAR PLAYING BY ROBBIE ROBERTSON ON THIS ALBUM. WHAT I FOUND INTERESTING IS THAT THEY DO THE SONG "SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME", WHICH IS ALSO COVERED BY ARETHA FRANKLIN, WHO ALSO DID A COVER OF THE BANDS' SONG "THE WEIGHT". GREAT SONGS ON THIS ALBUM INCLUDE "MYSTERY TRAIN" , (JET TO) THE PROMISED LAND (WHERE ARE YOU, ELVIS, JERRY GARCIA AND BOB WEIR?) AND "A CHANGE IS GONNA COME" (THE GREAT SAM COOKE SONG).
Highly Recommendable!.......2006-07-28
This 1973, often overlooked, album is at the same time a very different album and still a typical Band album. Different because all songs ( on the original version ) are cover versions and typical because the sound and playing style is unmistakeably the Band's.
Personal problems and outside project were among the reasons that the group did not write and record much new material during 1972-73, and the idea came up to do an album entirely of covers. Though covers, many songs actually sound like Band originals and some of them are among the very best Band recordings.
Especially the songs with lead vocals from Richard Manuel and Rick Danko stand out. Somehow it was decided the Leveb Helm did the most straight-forward rocking songs, which solid but not outstanding.
Manuel's performance on Bobby Bland's "Share Your Love" is simply beatiful. And absolute highlight and a recording on par with the very best Band originals. The same can almost be said about the more commercial "The Great Pretender" - another Manuel performance.
Third Manuel lead vocal is found on the "Leiber/Stoller" rocker "Saved". A good track, but really no more than that.
Rick Danko shines on Sam Cooke's anthem "A Change is Gonna Come" which closed the original album. Actually I prefer this version to Sam Cooke's original, which seems a little burdened down by too heavy orchestration.
The catchy "Holy Cow" performed by Danko, tongue in cheek, is another favourite.
There is a fine instrumental of the old movie theme "Third Man Theme" played in a similar mood to "Island" from their last studio album.
The rest of the album solid, with Levon Helm vocally in front.
The bonus tracks mostly sound like demos or unfinished outtakes.
Two important exceptions, though, is the exquisite Robbie Robertson original "Endless Highway" - great to finally have this song on an album; one of the very few new songs that Robertson wrote for the Band during this period. Lead vocals from Danko.
"Crying Heart Blues", also with Danko up front, sounds like song that could have come from debut album "Music From Big Pink" - another highlight!
Like on all the other Band re-issue original albums a fine booklet is included. Extensive back-ground information about each recording.
Highly recommendable!

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

Admirable communion with life.......2007-04-26
Blind he is our Moondog, but he does not bark for pity. He listens to and reproduces what he can capture with his ears. That means his work is a tremendous compilation of sounds from the real world, animals or just insects, his own baby and his own wife, or just some beating on a drum, or the frail dancing of a pipe along with a frog and a cricket. It is this extreme patchwork of sounds, voices, noise and music under the light enchantment from the moon that our artist is imagining in his eternal night. At least for him the moon never sets, never disappears over or behind the hills. "Surf Session" is the only piece that has some real length. The sea surf, the sea waves, the breaking of these waves we imagine along some pebbly seaside give a strange depth to the very both Asian and tremendously romantic music that manages to float forever over the rather powerful vortex of the sea, the ocean. The nearly Chinese constant grace-notes give the music a charm that is both discrete and so strong we seem to be able to imagine some Last Emperor advancing in the Forbidden City just before defeating his beleaguered wife and sons under the sign of some golden flower. The "Street Scene" is less fascinating because it is aimless, it lacks a direction and a destination? "I must never follow you and you must never follow me." He is roaming on and on, around and around, in that incessant, menacing, mechanical noise that comes up from the New York street locked up in between the walls of surrounding buildings. Can that be life? And what can it sound like to a blind man? Is it worse or less violent than what the famous Arthur Miller's Salesman felt, heard and experienced in his trapped two storied house in the middle of surrounding skyscrapers and under the crushing noise of thousands of motor vehicles? We will never know, except if we decide to do what dipus did when he realized his criminal inability to see the fate that was his. And he lived ever after like a dog in the eternal night of his blindness remembering the moonshine and the sunshine, tolerating the insults and petty assaults from those whose yes are not bleeding dead.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University Paris Dauphine & University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne
F_kin' Hardcore.......2005-12-06
Louis T. Hardin did not graduate from the Juliard. He went to a school in Iowa and Memphis, but was mostly self taught. Listen to this with your eyes closed.
Eccentric Centrist.......2003-12-14
Odd-ball individuals are more common than geniuses, but Moondog is both. Harry Partch had the highest regard for this blind graduate of Julliard, whose fantastic get-up of skins, furs and horns might have detracted from the impact of less seminal music. Since he was immensely tall, he made quite an apparition. Moondog's primitivo get-up was odd, to say the least, but since Moondog was blind, one wonders who put the costume together. Moondog, like Harry, invented most of the instruments he played standing on the corener at the Avenue of the Americas. His music reaches back into prehistory in its effect, and has a kindness to it, if that may be a reasonable thing to say. Later, Moondog became sort of a darling of the avant garde, and composed for traditional instruments, but the earlier the recorded work, the more deep down and pure it was. The later work is slicker, but just as intelligent.

35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24
You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.
"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.
Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.
In my 600+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.
Wonderful.......2004-01-26
Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.
The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05
I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.
It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.
I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.
Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.
My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.
For those who love the music.......2003-11-29
It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`
Moondog.......2002-05-16
I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

Album Description
Beautifully packaged two CD compilation consisting of recordings from the last 20 years of Moondog's life, when he resided and recorded in Germany. Disc One consists of studio recordings from 1977-99 and features 'High On A Rocky Ledge', 'Do Your Thing', 'I'm This, I'm That', 'Heimdall Fanfare', 'Fujiyama 2 (Lovesong)' and more. Disc Two is his last live performance, recorded a month before his death, and is wonderfully recorded, sounding as well-produced as the studio tracks on the first disc. The packaging includes 44 pages of liner notes featuring essays, interviews, photographs and other information, all packaged in a hard cardboard sleeve, creating a virtual work of art.

Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25
Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.
Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.
Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...
Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12
This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)
The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)
The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.
I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.
Late Moondog.......2005-04-27
When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.
Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.
Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.
Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

The first new music from Moondog, nee Louis Hardin, in more than 20 years, Sax Pax for A Sax is probably the best introduction to the work of this eccentric former street musician. A joyous outburst, Sax Pax touches on influences ranging from Miles Davis' groundbreaking "Birth of the Cool," sessions ("Dog Trot"), medieval motets ("Tout Suite No. 1 in F Major"), and bebop's harmonic innovations ("Bird's Lament" and "Present for the Prez"). There's even a male chorus showing up occasionally, sounding like they stepped out of a Busby Berkely musical as they jauntily sing the praises of Paris, New York, and London. But the music's precise counterpoint and buoyant inventiveness could only be Moondog; listen and be enthralled. --Steven Mirkin

JUST WONDERFUL! AND HIP TOO!!!.......2007-05-03
Great Americana! Hip! Just wonderful!
My one regret is that I didn't have a chance to book this in US before he died. There is a video of this btw.
another great one out of print.......2006-04-14
This is amazing. And no, it's not jazz. This is composed music, and it spits in the face of the academic axiom that concert music has to suck in order to be any good. Truly unique and truly listenable, why isn't this a best-seller?
Sax Choir Arrives.......2005-08-29
I grew up loving Boots Randolph, Ace Cannon, King Curtis, and Johnny and the Hurricanes. I was browsing through the net looking for something on Simon Haram(a well known current European classical Saxophonist) and stumbled on this Album. I have never heard anything like this. Its my music find of the year (I am an iPod addict). This is a Sax dectet (1 Sopranio, 2 Soprano, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones and Basses) and then they throw in drums, piano, and bass guitar. My ears feel massaged with sound. I will only quote some review from the net:"The dectet of saxophones plus piano and bass guitar that is London Saxophonic is staggering... sounded like an Arvo Pärt choir jamming with the Bulgarian National Assembly of Throat Singers, yes it was that good." The Independent -- Believe this!!
yes, oh yes, moondog is the best.......2002-08-29
this music was already in my head before I heard it. blocks of chords ascending and exploding in fugal fireworks, plus evocations of an imaginary jungle-jive Paris love affair. unbelievably soulful, funny, charming, surprising. you like moondog! you like moondog! buy moondog!
eccentric and top rate.......2000-01-05
Fun and crisp. "Paris" had us dancing in the living room and "Movts 1, 2, 3" are sweet lullabies. Highly recommended

Album Description
This new release from Honest Jon's is the first overview of Moondog's amazing artistic life - including recordings spanning from 1949 till 1995, with numerous 78s and various other vanished records revived for the first time (not to mention a couple of Weegee photographs!). Though the compilation is rooted in the decades Moondog regularly lived rough in New York City, performing on street corners - 'the Viking Of Sixth Avenue' - at the same time it lays the music's claim to the future. It makes vivid sense of his inspiration of fans from Igor Stravinsky to Bob Dylan, Mr Scruff to Frank Zappa, Charlie Parker to Elvis Costello, Janis Joplin to Anthony And The Johnsons. As Moondog put it himself in 1989 - 'I still love horned helmets and swords and spears. I like to feel that I'm loyal to my past. I wouldn't want to be on the street anymore. But, you know, that led to a lot of things.' 2005.

No Fleas on Moondog.......2007-07-02
This is the only Moondog recording I own so far. I plan to get more . I've heard his name mentioned time and time again in relation to many other artists I listen to. I thoroughly enjoy this recording. It reminds me of the the tapes of experiments I've done over the years - little snippets of ideas. This is happy music from a man sincere enough about what he was doing to do without a lot of comforts for a long time. That sort of dedication I feel deserves at least 4 stars. This might not be his classic set of recordings, I have yet to find out for sure, but it's a good one. I don't regret buying this it in the least.
lament over Bird's Lament.......2007-04-25
I'm a new fan of Moondog, having heard "Bird's Lament" and falling in love with its complementing saxophones. I hastily purchased this album solely because that song was on it, without finding out more about who was performing it. The rendition of that song on this album was sorely disappointing. The saxophones play second tune to the other brass and their final playfulness is completely drowned out in this version. Other songs on the album equally fail to impress. I later discovered that the version I heard was from the German Years discs and I'm going to have to buy that album now to redeem my impression of this talented composer.

Customer Reviews:
"Rare" indicating that the material is currently out-of-print.......2007-02-16
This double-disc set release contains music from Moondog albums/discs currently out-of-print, only by which means this material is "rare;" for all you active Moondog listeners, who might have bought Moondog's music as albums have been released and re-released, every single track (and version) in this collection will be familiar. There are, however, 6 tracks that have not been released on CD before (tracks from the 1978 album "Instrumental Music" and from the 1986 album "Bracelli.")
I've been trying for 2 years to obtain Moondog's 1995 CD "Big Band." Had I succeeded in that prior to the release of this set, there would not have been much reason for me to spend money on "Rare Material," as disc no.1 consists of "Big Band" in its entirety.
Disc no.2 (which runs a few seconds short of an hour) has a very mixed order of a lot of mixed material; 3 of the 4 tracks from the 1955 EP "Moondog and His Honking Geese" (of which a limited, now out-of-print, edition was released on CD in 2001) are available ("Bumbo" is missing) but the majority of material on disc no.2 is taken from "Moondog" and "More Moondog" (both released on Prestige in 1956.)
In the booklet we find a few black and white photographs, a brief Moondog chronology, excerpts from his biographical poetic impressions, track-by-track commentary for "Big Band" by Moondog, and track-by-track information on disc no.2 by somebody anonymous at Roof, the latter featuring a couple of misprints, such as this version of "All is Loneliness" being taken from "More Moondog" [Prestige 1956] when in fact it is taken from "Moondog 2" [CBS 1971,] and details for "Lullaby" suggesting that it is "a sextet in 3/4 meter" which it is not; the meter is 5/4.
"Rare Material" is actually a fine looking, fine sounding, and much appreciated (well produced) release, but not unlike Roof's 2004 double-disc release "The German Years 1977-1999" (where, on disc no.2, the entire, incidentally extremely rare, last concert of Moondog's can be heard) this is a collection of official material (on this release recorded between 1949 and 1995.)
As a lot, if not all, material of Moondog's official releases seem to be shelved at Roof, I would much rather see a (perhaps chronological) release of each individual Moondog album that has been released over the last 5 decades than having to buy rare material which isn't as rare in the true sense of the word as it is compiled from official releases. Even though my personal collection lacked "Big Band," I can understand people feeling cheated having bought a quite pricey double-disc set entitled "Rare Material" only to realize that they've bought music that they already own. (The fact that disc no.1 features this recording is not indicated on either the front or back cover of this release - only in small print inside the booklet.)
I personally thank Roof for "Big Band," although I'd rather have bough it as a release with its original cover instead of (unknowingly) part of "Rare Material."
Perhaps more releases like "The German Years" and "Rare Material" is upcoming from Roof - I only wish the releases would be less of compilations and more of complete--more coherent--recordings, because if Moondog's material currently out-of-print and unissued on CD will continue to be released in this manner, most of us may not live to experience even half of it.
Moondog material: "rare" and no-so-"rare"... but all essential.......2006-11-18
Although he rubbed shoulders with a remarkably varied group of 20th century cultural figures, including Janis Joplin, Mr. Scruff, Charlie Parker, Philip Glass, Igor Stravinsky, Bob Dylan, Artur Rodzinski, Mouse on Mars, William S. Burroughs, Lenny Bruce, Alan Freed, etc., etc.... Louis "Moondog" Hardin -- the composer-busker-percussionist-philosopher himself -- remains a largely misunderstood and sadly under-recorded musical genius.
Rare Material is actually the second double CD set of this blind, Viking-garbed, counterpoint-obsessed composer's "rare material" released by the German ROOF Music label, which thankfully seems dedicated to documenting Moondog's musical legacy -- albeit in a rather scattershot manner.
The German Years (1977-1999) has fancier but flimsy packaging, with one of its discs compiling some extremely hard to find recordings from Moondog's time in Europe along with several selections from the widely available (though apparently now out of print?) Sax Pax for a Sax Atlantic album. The second German Years CD is a revelatory, previously unreleased recording of his final live performance in France (not Germany...) with pianist Dominique Ponty on August 1, 1999.
This new Rare Material ROOF collection has less luxurious but sturdier packaging and an almost identical cover image. It mines much of the same territory and unearths even more riches, although the decision to include several long tracks from the far-from-"rare" Prestige albums Moondog and More Moondog is as regrettable as the extensive sampling of Sax Pax for a Sax on the earlier collection.
The first CD resurrects the rare and out-of-print 1995 Big Band album in its entirety (one track was also included on The German Years.) Like Sax Pax, Big Band also highlights John Harle's London Saxophonic and even includes some of the same compositions.
These performances, however, feature... well, a "bigger band," augmenting the saxophones, clarinets, and vocals with a brass ensemble and more percussion. This results in a fresh, striking sound even on familiar pieces like "Paris" and especially "Shakespeare City," which has an amazing extended second half not performed on the Sax Pax album. Every other tune is a winner too, from the exuberantly jazzy "Blast Off" to the stately processional "Torisa" to the maddening and/or compelling "Invocation" -- a ten minute "16-part canon on one tone." Yep, one tone. Literally.
The second disc is a hodgepodge of Moondog recordings spanning about forty years, and other than those previously mentioned Prestige tracks, this additional "rare material" was all new to my ears and completely fascinating.
Hardin's early years are represented by Moondog's Symphony (1949!), tracks from Moondog and his Friends and Moondog on the Streets of New York (both from 1953) and most of the remarkable 1955 EP Moondog and his Honking Geese (only "Bumbo," a tune re-recorded on Big Band, is missing.)
Jumping forward in time, a pair of rather pedantic pipe organ pieces from an obscure 1978 Musical Heritage Society LP are included, as is a one-off instrumental with the Swiss pop singer Stephan Eicher from 1989.
Best of all, appearing on CD for the first time here are four substantial selections from the 1986 album Bracelli. One tantalizing track from this ultra-rare release also appeared on The German Years, and this is unquestionably some of the greatest stuff in the Moondog... uh... canon. Performed by a violin-less string ensemble and percussion, these complex and appealing pieces weave mesmerizing yet often surprising strands of counterpoint and harmony around a percolating foundation of infectious rhythm.
My only wish is that the entire Bracelli album was included here instead of the not-very-"rare material" from the Prestige LPs. A few more of the H'Art Songs would have been nice, too. Then there's Kenny Graham's long lost Moondog Suite. And what about that mind-boggling 1957 children's album, Tell It Again -- an unlikely collaboration between Moondog and Julie Andrews (yes, that Julie Andrews!)
Let's hope ROOF Music has these Moondog rarities and many more waiting in the wings for future releases. In the meantime, we should be grateful that this remarkable music is at last readily available on CD and at a fairly reasonable "import" price to boot.
The merely curious and/or uninitiated might also be tempted by the very fine new single disc Moondog compilation The Viking of Sixth Avenue, but Rare Material -- especially when paired with The German Years -- paints a more vivid (if still incomplete) portrait.
Am I dreaming? Two excellent Moondog CD collections appearing within months of each other? Perhaps his time is finally coming...

Elliott Goldenthal, John Cage.......2005-12-04
This eclectic CD is a must for fans of Elliott Goldenthal or John Cage. Additionally anyone who is plays in a brass qunintet or is intersted in brass quintet music should listen to this CD to expand their views of what a brass quintet can do in the comtemporary music landscape.
Fantastic sounds and eclectic music........2004-12-31
Not your typical rehashed Ewald here. This young quintet plays commissions and does it with outstanding beauty and clarity. This is a musician's recording. No other quintet has this sound.
