Lewis Taylor's second album, Lewis II, finds the complex R&B maverick in exceptional form. Although often compared to Marvin Gaye--it's the swoops and honeyed falsetto--Taylor's music gently slips and slides between classic soul, symphonic pop, funk, and psychedelic rock. That said, the subject matter of this album has much in common with Gaye's controversial album Here, My Dear: not only is every song an impassioned lament to an estranged lover, but Taylor has that uncanny knack of making self-pity sound utterly gorgeous. Taylor has shelved the widescreen soul of his eponymous 1996 debut in favor of a quirky London-centric brand of wah-wah guitars, brass, and achingly beautiful funk. Surprisingly, for an album that reputedly took three years to make, there are no fillers--just 11 tracks of knockout future classics. From the sweet rare groove of the opener "Party" to the elegiac epic "Blue Eyes," Lewis II resonates with thoughtful melodies and dreamy determination. Like D'Angelo, another multi-instrumentalist with one foot in the past, Taylor is unrepentantly retro: his "Never Be My Woman" will appeal to fans of Voodoo. But his cover of indie poster boy Jeff Buckley's "Everybody Here Wants You" is a heroic effort to convert the original's understated feel into something grandiose. Lewis II is diverse, melodic, and inspired. Let's hope others will follow Taylor's example. --Na'solo So Fahed

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2007-01-10

There's something funny going on with this music on this CD. It's as if the instruments are playing one thing and vocals are doing another. I've never done drugs, but somehow this makes me feel like I am - as if what I've read about taking LSD or some other type of hallucinogen is true. Perhaps that's what he was on when he recorded it. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album!.......2005-02-02

I have been trying to get my hand on this album for years. Some of the best music out there is impossible to get your hands on, and Lewis Taylor's second album is no exception. This is a truly solid effort from start to finish, for if no other reason than that Taylor is such an experimental artist. You never get bored hearing on of his songs, or feel compelled to skip, because with each track you can find something interesting. If you enjoyed his debut alum, this project will only make you more a Lewis Taylor fan.

5 out of 5 stars What if Marvin Gaye and Janis Joplin had a baby?.......2004-04-04

The result might well be Lewis Taylor! This is an incredible album, that captures a lyricism that, while bordering on egotistical at times, is irresitable. Tracks 2, 4, and 6 are the most noteworthy, which is saying something in an album that is top-shelf from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant.......2003-01-04

... and he is simply brilliant. Amazing vocals, great guitar playing and wonderful songs, whatever kind of music you're into.
He lets a lot of his influences show, but when you produce material this good, it's just colour to the mix. And get his first album while you're at it...

4 out of 5 stars U.K. soul will always soothe my ears.......2001-08-16

A DJ Krush mix tape was where I first heard of this kat. Underground radio was playing "Blue Eyes" and "Satisfied" but I never knew who the kat was. Not until I bought the CD did I find out this kat was white. Compared overseas to the style of Marvin Gaye (not quite.....but can sing!!) Lewis Taylor could go very far with this CD if only it was promoted in the U.S. THE RIGHT WAY. The man has madd vocal talent and the crisp production behind him makes this CD a must in my kitchen of chefs cooking up nothing but the best soul food for my ears.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!.......2007-04-25

This is so much fun! It's a shame that this is a "selections only" version rather than the complete work. That said, "Die Fledermaus" is not a great serious work, but a bon-bon. And what a delightful bon-bon!

First, the cast. An interesting combination. Anna Moffo is a delightful Rosalinda; her lush voice works well here. Jeanette Scovotti as Adele may be less well known, but her work is fine indeed (way back when, I owned the Reader's Digest "Operetta" collection, in which these two reversed roles). Rise Stevens, an estimable mezzo, sings Orlofsky with a nice touch. Sergio Franchi plays Alfredo. Eisenstein is well sung by Richard Lewis. George London, a mainstay at the Met, took on Falke. Finally, John Hauxvell sang Frank. And they all seem to be having a grand old time in the singing. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus are well led by Oscar Danon.

Second, the singing. The English translation is hardly great art. But the infectious presentation by the singers renders this close to irrelevant. "Calamity, Catastrophe" has everyone in a dither, with a quick tempo that catches the listener up in the excitement. Rise Stevens does a wonderful turn in "More often than not. . .Chacun a son gout." Well sung indeed. Adele's "Oh for the life of an actress" is an affecting piece, with Jeanette Scovotti doing a nice job singing.

So, if you want an infectious, fun version of "Die Fledermaus" (even with a rather lame English translation), this will work well for you.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime Moffo and cast.......2007-03-04

Terrific recording of highlights from Strauss' "Die Fledermaus", sung in English by Anna Moffo and Sergio Franchi in lead roles with Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Anna Moffo's voice is simply sublime and her magnificent performance demonstrates why she is one of the finest sopranos. First rate cast also includes the wonderful Rise Stevens in fine voice. Sound quality is excellent and stereo. I have only one complaint - why did they not release the full version instead of merely highlights? This disc left me wanting more of this delightful opera.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS OF FUN AND BEAUTIFULLY SUNG.......2006-06-29

The sublime Anna Moffo in radiant voice at her peak surrounded by a first rate cast in an excellent translation -only wish it was complete instead of just excerpts!

5 out of 5 stars Great Moments from Die Fledermaus.......2006-02-10

This is a delightful 1963 recording of highlights from the Johann Strauss operetta "Die Fledermaus", sung in English by major stars of the day, and accompanied by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Anna Moffo sparkles in the role of Rosalinda, showing quite clearly why she was regarded as one of the finest singing actresses of her time. The great mezzo Rise Stevens, at the end of her career here, has a grand time as a throaty Count Orlofsky. Jeanette Scovotti is quite good in the soubrette role of Adele, her light, bright voice contrasting nicely with Moffo's rich, sensuous soprano. The men in the cast are equally good. Richard Lewis, George London and John Hauxvell are all in fine voice and lend a splendid comic flair to the proceedings. The English translations are well done and easy to understand. Uncork a bottle of champagne, sit back and let this recording take you back to Old Vienna!

4 out of 5 stars Sparkling vintage Johann Strauss.......2004-02-20

Oscar Danon is the real star of ths recording. His conducting keeps things light and bubbly, just as it should be.

The English translation is acceptable but nothing dazzling, and some of the words and phrases seem awkward. (Purists will argue FLEDERMAUS is best heard in it's original German. For that, go to Decca's wonderful 1960 set which includes the wonderful gala sequence featuring an all-star cast.)

Anna Moffo is a fine Rosalinda and Jeanette Scovotti is perfect for Adele. (The two ladies switched roles that same year to record highlights for Readers Digest TREASURY OF GREAT OPERETTAS.) Rise Stevens is a bit of a plum as Prince Orlofsky, somehwat past her prime and oversinging "A Most Successful Host." Sergio Franchi does better with Alfred and Richard Lewis does fine as Eisenstein.

The Ball scene is given the larger piece of the recording, probably because this is where the opera's most famous "hit tunes" originate.

FLEDERMAUS is very much a piece of another world...a long forgotten time when Vienna was all glitter and balls and waltzes. They had the right attitude then: In the rest of the world the situation was often serious, but not hopeless. The Vienese viewed the situation as being hopeless - but never serious.

THAT is the spirit of this fun recording.

This two-CD set collects a couple of shows by George and Ira Gershwin. Both produced in 1925, the two musicals--Tip-Toes and Tell Me More--are fairly obscure and don't boast as many famous songs as contemporary Gershwin offerings such as Oh, Kay! and Lady Be Good. Still, they are bursting with wit, invention, and joie de vivre. Based on a 1998 concert production, Tip-Toes is delicious, and several songs deserve a place in the Gershwin pantheon: the ballad "Looking for a Boy," the love duet "That Certain Feeling," and the rousing dance number "Sweet and Low-Down." The score is also notable for its spectacular writing for duo pianos. Tell Me More is not as immediately accessible (indeed, it had the shortest run of any Gershwin musical, with 32 performances), but it's delivered with élan by its topnotch cast, which includes Sally Mayes, Christine Ebersole, Diane Fratantoni, and David Garrison. Under the expert musical direction of Rob Fisher (from New York's famed Encores! series), this double set is, of course, essential for Gershwin completists. In fact, just about any fan of zany Jazz Age artifacts should relish it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Album Description

Tip-Toes, which made its Broadway debut on December 28, 1925, was produced by Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley, who had been the producers of the Gershwins' smash hit Lady, Be Good! the year before. Attempting to repeat that success, they once again combined the same book writers, Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, with the Gershwin brothers. Tip-Toes was well received by audiences and the press, and ran for 194 performances. It was given a subsequent production at the Winter Garden Theatre in London, opening August 31, 1926, running for 181 performances.

One of the most overlooked Gershwin shows, Tell Me More was also the most unlikely of Jazz Age musicals. In an era marked by lavish extravaganzas and brash star vehicles, Tell Me More, which opened on April 13, 1925, relied on charm, modesty, and an impish sense of humor. Because it failed to recoup its investment on Broadway, it was relegated to the list of Gershwin flops; because its score was largely forgotten, it has been widely regarded as a minor effort. In truth, it's a key show. As the only full-length collaboration between George and Ira Gershwin and B.G. DeSylva, it combines the delicacy and grace of the scores George had written earlier in the decade with DeSylva and the bold wit he had pioneered in partnership with his brother Ira four months earlier in Lady, Be Good! The best of both worlds, Tell Me More was a one-of-a-kind achievement.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gifts from musical theater heaven!.......2005-07-24

The restoration of several complete Gershwin scores in recent years has been a gift from the theater gods. These two shows lack the bite of "Strike Up the Band," "Of Thee I Sing" and other earlier releases, but they have no lack of the Ira's wit and George's effortless melodies. Upbeat tuners "Kickin' the Clouds Away" and "Sweet and Low-Down" are especially engaging, and the authentic-sounding orchestrations lend a nostalgic aura. The first-rate casts seem to be having the time of their lives.

4 out of 5 stars Tell Me More and more and more.......2001-12-07

I bought this CD because I had seen the concert of Tip-Toes, which I found enjoyable if uneven: great songs in Act I and not much in Act II. But for me, the real revelation here is Tell Me More, a totally forgotten Gershwin musical from the Twenties. I only knew one of the songs, "Kickin' the Clouds Away," but this score hits all the right notes, from gently melodic to flat-out funny. And the cast couldn't be better. David Garrison and Christine Ebersole are hugely funny in the comic roles, tossing out their one-liners like the Broadway pros that they are. And what a delight to hear the romantic couple on one of these vintage recordings -- in this case, Diane Fratantoni and Philip Chaffin -- sing just like a real period couple: him with the creamy tenor voice and her with the boop-a-doop flapper sound. Their rendition of "Three Times a Day," a lovely ballad with a Kern-like flavor, is, for me, the highlight of this 2-CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Two restored little Gershwin gems.......2001-11-10

Although the Princess shows of Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse back in 1917 tried to introduce a solid plot into the American musical comedy, the story lines still did not amount to much until "Show Boat " set the standard. So when George and Ira Gershwin opened with two musicals in 1925, the first was based on a mistaken-identity situation already a cliché in the genre (Bolton did the book); and the second (again with Bolton, plus B.D. de Sylva) was about the Florida land boom that also formed the basis of Berlin's "The Coconuts" the very same year.

Both "Tell Me More" and "Tip-Toes" were part of the discovery of many Gershwin manuscripts buried in a New Jersey warehouse; and we can be most thankful to New World Records for restoring the scores and bits of the dialogue in a two-CD boxed set (80598-2). The music is what you would expect from Gershwin: 1920s jazzy with that special core of Gershwin genius. Yes, a good deal of it sounds like Berlin and Kern--as did just about every other contemporary composer except Romberg (who sounded like Herbert). On the other hand, "Kickin' the Clouds Away" from the earlier show seems to be the inspiration for Berlin's "Shakin' the Blues Away" written two years later! "Tell Me More" also does not shy away from ethnic jokes (i.e., mistaking a request to disguise oneself as British for doing so as Yiddish) that do not offend at all. And if we moderns grow impatient with the rich bubbleheads of the F. Scott Fitzgerald crowd, they are still a breath of fresh air after the population of "Miss Saigon" and plays of that sort.

The game casts have voices just right for this sort of characterization and delivery. The "Tip-Toes" production is taken from the Carnegie Hall Concert version and is outstanding.

This New World set deserves a place of honor among the other Gershwin Brothers restorations on other labels. And do not forget the New World complete recording of Kern's "Sitting Pretty," which (like these two Gershwin shows) did not produce any hits but is delightful from overture to Finale Ultimo.

When vibraphonist Milt Jackson passed away in 1999, the Modern Jazz Quartet's nearly half-century career ended. Pianist-composer John Lewis, the MJQ's co-founder and musical director, released a sublime solo piano CD, Evolution, just before Jackson died. And Evolution II is Lewis's first post-MJQ project, the second of the three-CD series in which he revisits several of his classic compositions. Lewis performs in a Kansas City-style quartet setting with the articulate drummer Lewis Nash, guitarists Howard Collins and Howard Alden, and bassists George Mraz and Marc Johnson. Lewis's timeless elegy "Django" starts here with a new intro, which segues into a streamlined piano solo, which melds into its trademarked melody. The bouncy beat of "The Festivals" is a dancing retake of Lewis's "In a Crowd," and "December, Remember" recalls the sacred sonorities of "In Memoriam." With "Come Rain or Come Shine," Lewis's spare, lyrical pianism comes to the fore, and his wonderful "One of Parker's Moods" elaborates on his magnificent 1948 piano solo on a classic piece of Bird's blues, "Parker's Mood." This spontaneous, crystalline collection leaves us anticipating John Lewis's next stage of evolution, just as it reminds us why the MJQ had such lasting power. --Eugene Holley Jr.

    5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Minimalism.......2004-11-21

All that I said for the predecessor of this album goes double for the successor. This is music absolutely unique and irreplaceable for its understated simplicity. If you're a pianist, you no doubt will be able to account for every note that Lewis plays in both hands yet be ceasely surprised at his inventiveness. Not a note is wasted. There are no fills and frills, no alternate harmonies and voicings, no melodic side trips. The pianist simply lays bare and anatomizes each of the songs, erasing the line between performance and composition.

That fact that he is able to employ such virtuosic musicians this time to such purely supportive ends, using them as mere extensions of his instrument and musical genius, is all the more remarkable.

Far from "pleasant" music, this is disciplined, minimalist art of the highest order. It may please even the casual listener but it will repay many times over the concentration of the serious one.

4 out of 5 stars come rain or come shine? shine 's coming now!.......2001-04-02

80 years old john lewis gave us two great records in a few months.Evolution I is for sure a treasury of jazz piano;and even if Evolution II doesn't reach the stratospheric level of volume 1,there are few of piano players who gave us such perfect and swinging music to listen to.Of course, the guitars of Howard Alden and Howard Collins are very sober; but there are great versions of classics like "Trieste","Django","Parker's mood" and great blues playing on "Cain and Abel".This session is easier to listen to than Evolution I,but there is magnificent piano playing here.If one of your favorite valours in music is the art of silence and economy, you'll treasure this record.

4 out of 5 stars Easy on the Ears!.......2001-02-22

I bought both Evolution I and II and listened to I a few times before II. Evolution I is austere, more difficult (and perhaps more rewarding). By comparison, the trio format of EII makes it swing; it is "easy on the ears." There is plenty of subtlety and complex innovation in EII. Lots of humor. Numerous quotations.Never repetitive, always surprising. After hearing EI I realized that Lewis' style is more than spare, it is almost staccato, but in EII the trio, especially the bass, unites his expressions so he seems more smooth than he really is. His re-make of Django is just amazing, although Milt Jackson is still in it (in my head). The sound quality is not up to perfection: Several notes have fuzz on them, though it is not a serious problem overall.

5 out of 5 stars Spare yet Thorough Playing.......2001-02-19

The genius of this album is John Lewis' spare, economical, yet thorough playing. There are no extended riffs or flourishes, just the compositions as written, no more and no less. It is this economy of playing that makes this album truly unique and enjoyable. I own many piano jazz CD's, but certainly nothing with playing such as this!

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next release, E3!.......2001-01-28

Greatly musical. Not as riveting as E1, but the great essence of music is still there. Look forward to next release. Keep up the good work JL, we need the continuity.

    Album Description

Well known and well respected rock keyboardists performing classical pieces is a multi-level challenge. It is of course a challenge to the players themselves to step beyond the commercially-imposed boundaries of their careers to produce a piece which will live forever in some recorded medium. It is a challenge to a record company which is counting on the talent of the artists to appeal to buyers as well as the loyalty and enthusiasm of the music lover to buy the recording once it goes into the marketplace.

But the challenge goes further. It goes out to the music consumer to stretch his/her own expectations of the artists as well as to step outside the comfort zone of the stylistic setting to which they have become accustomed. If you are a fan of a particular artist or artists on this CD, you will probably be hearing them in a musically unfamiliar context. If you are first and foremost a fan of classical music, you will be listening to artists who may not be familiar to you. New interpretations on familiar themes, new techniques applied to classic compositions. Everyone involved had to stretch. Stretching is good.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Proghead's Dream CD.......2002-03-14

What could a Proghead want more than this? Emerson, Wakeman, Moraz together again for the first time.

The idea for this album is a good one. All those classical chops put to waste on rock albums can now show the deftness, taste, and ability to recreate Western Art classics. Some play it straight; Wakeman practically phones in his piece, others lay their hearts on the line: Patrick Moraz's reading of Chopin is world-class. The highlight of the album might be Brian Auger's jazzy rendition of Faure's Pavanne Op. 50.

4 out of 5 stars Each piece is a labor of devotion.......2001-08-25

I purchased this cd to hear Chuck Leavell's contribution and while his is quite good, you have got to hear Brian Augur's interpretation of a Faure composition. It's absolutely heart rendering! Patrick Moraz sounds great and Rick Wakeman delivers a stunning, surprisingly quiet and sensitive Beethoven contribution. I agree with a previous reviewer below that Keith Emerson sounds "exactly as you'd expect him to." The short biographies of the 12 contributors are excellent and impressive and the short contributor-penned project notes about why each selected the pieces is fascinating -- especially Moraz'. the biggest surprise to me is how can David Bryan play so wonderfully here and remain fulfilled professionally in Bon Jovi. The money, women or both must be fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars If You Are Into Piano ...........2000-08-19

If you are into piano (and why else would you be here?), you should own this CD. The performances range from the expected (Emerson plays the way you would expect Emerson to play) to the unexpected. Wakeman and Jordan Rudess take a serious (and well done) approach whereas Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones,Eric Clapton ..) takes more "liberties". Chis Ingles' and David Bryan's classical training make them well suited for this collection. Heck, they are all great! Every time I listen to the CD I find something else to like about it (ok, so I'm a little late discovering this one)....

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......1999-08-28

THE QUALITY OF THE SOUND OF THE PIANOS REFLECTS THE QUALITY OF THE MUSICIANS. IT'S ALWAYS AN EFFORT TO LISTEN TO PIANO MUSIC BECAUSE THE RECORDINGS ARE SO POOR. THIS STANDS OUT. THE SOUND IS BRIGHT AND TRUTHFUL. BEAUTIFUL INTERPRETATIONS OF THE MASTERS BY MASTERS( OF COURSE........WE ALL KNEW THEY WERE!). A MUST FOR PIANO LOVERS.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary music with solid construction and vivid colors........1999-07-30

The compositions of Robert Hall Lewis is a mixture of Classical elegance and Modernist complexity, showcasing sweeping large-scale orchestral gestures intermixed with subtlety of fine-points.

"Destini," "Motto," and "Concerto for String Orchestra, Trumpets, Keyboard and Harp" are boldly innovative both in structural form and sonic texture. Although each piece is individually distinct, Lewis manages to consistently retain his compositional trademarks of timed surprise and orchestral migration throughout the entire recording.

CRI, the Philharmonia, and Lewis' conducting should all receive equal credit in bringing this recording to its high post-production standards. With good playback equipment, this premium fidelity recording will amplify all the musical dynamics at "concert hall" quality.
