At first glance, all of David's diverse projects may seem to have little in common with his earliest gigs touring and recording with Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard and Tom Scott. But at age 45, the Chicago born, New York and St. Louis bred Garfield can summarize his entire, admittedly all encompassing career in three simple words: "I make music. That's my mission statement. Things developed slowly over time, till I was playing every different kind of music in unique situations. Always going against the grain, doing music that may not have been the in thing at the time but hanging around until it became popular. It all goes back to when I was seven years old, first learning the piano," he adds. "There seemed like a great spiritual connection there, and I felt compelled to keep playing. I started my life playing rock, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk and started meeting more and more jazz musicians in St. Louis which made jazz a logical second love for me. It's been an incredible education."

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

An unfortunate CD release.......2006-07-24

While this 13-track original score is largely incomplete and (as many have commented) full of the more useless cues; stuff we could do without, there is a 34-track bootleg floating around. I don't know how to get a hold of it, but it's circulating through the internet, giving David Newman the true audio release he deserved for one of his best musical efforts.

Pointless.......2005-10-06

Why have a soundtrack that has all of the songs people don't care about? Basically this cd has all the background music that you never notice and quite frankly don't care about. Most of you who want to buy this cd is the same reason why you would buy any other, because it has one or two (very rarely three) songs that you want to get. The song that you are probably looking for is when the three of them with the baby are walking to the peak (where they ride in the ice caves) togather. It's called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Hope that helps

To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

What a CD, pure joy to listen to,up there with Fourplay. I played this cd non stop for days and came away with something different each time.

As Molley Meldrum would say "do yourself and favour and buy this CD" you won't be sorry.

Awesome CD!!.......2004-05-05

Live365.com and David Peck of Promowizard Management alerted me to this new artist. The musical support on this recording reads like a who's who in the Jazz world. Gerald Albright, Michael & Randy Brecker, Paul Jackson Jr., Eric Marienthal, Greg Phillinganes, Lee Ritenour and more! Together they give David the right touches and provide an outstanding recording. "Desert Hideaway" is the signature track. Gerald Albright's sax playing is just awesome. "Sweet PC" is another great track, with great assistance from Albright, Jackson and Phillinganes. There's also a hip version of the Steely Dan classic, "Josie" which displays the guitar talents of Steve Farris, better know as "The Wizard". From beginning to end, this CD is very fulfilling and fun to listen to. Highly, highly recommended!

Excellent CD.......2004-04-23

This is one of the best CD I have heard for years since David Garfield and his friends recorded an excellent tribute album dedicated to the one and only late drummer,Jeff.
David did terrific job to gather many best musicians in U.S. and
cordinate those musucians.
I like one song which features Brecker Brothers with two drummers at once. Amazing recording truck.
Especially vocal trucks like 'For the love of you' which is recoverd version of the Isley Brothers and 'Josy' which is revover of the great Steeley Dan. Alex Lingerwood did teriffic job of singing these wonderful songs.If you love great musicianship with great recording, just buy this CD.
I promise you will not disappointed.

Don't Understand Why Anyone Listens To These Guys.......2000-04-26

Sure they are from my home state; they draw bazillions of dirty dreadlocked underage pothead,"I go to college dude" urchins(dirt hippies we call 'em), got signed to a major label, but they have no tunes! Somebody give these guys a clue what songwriting is. It certainly isn't running around saying dirty words with no shirt on, trying to be a fifth rate Chili Peppers/ Jane's Addiction (both yucko too!,as well as ancient history ). I was given this disc for free at one of their shows(which was hard enough to take)and promptly sold it to the used CD store after one painful listen. People must get the impression that this garbage is all the state of Maryland has to offer musically;we also have a thriving roots music/alternative country,garage rock, and power pop scene that these guys and their Fowl records disciples are not part of. They have inspired an insipid cult of imitaters,that think they are going to get signed too, that need to be ignored.

Giving Something Back.......2000-01-03

Giving Something Back is such an awesome cd. You really start to make a personal connection to the band with this record. They weren't as powerful live back then as they are now, but it's still a great cd. You really start to see their personalities shine through, like frontman Jimi Haha's humor. It's also the only cd where you can get the song "React", which is wonderful, and "Vacuum". If you like Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope, then you will love this. All of your favorites off of that album are alive and kicking on this one.

I first heard jimmie's chicken shack when a friend brought there first major label release over adn tried to get me to play it on my guitar. That is when the affair started. since then i have bought every album they have. i bought this one while i was at a concert of The Shacks. The concert was awesome and so is this band, the cd does a great job of showing their energy live adn how much they can control a crowd. So if you want a great live cd adn you like good "mutt rock" as they are called, buy this album. i dont think you will be sorry.

Please don't blow off this album because it wasn't recorded in some big name studio or you will miss out! You will never get sick of listening to this album- the songs really grow on you. Underdrive has their own sound that really grabs you. Escape a world full of cheesy no talent bands by listening to this non-trendy, great work of art! Rock on, ride free guys!

As a former bandmate of the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of underdrive I feel that my comments are genuine. Ive played in a couple of bands with Matt and co wrote several songs with him. When he finally mailed me the finished copy of his cd I was impressed with it. The songs are very catchy and diversified. Theyre moody, ballsy, moving and tastefull. But more importantly its not an album that tries to fall into the scene but rather one that makes its own and stands on its own with its content. Besides being a very talented musician, Matt is very much a non conformist and is a true artist that wont compromise his musical integretity just to make the scene. Considering the fact that the album was produced by Matt himself and not a big name producer in a high tech studio, Matt makes a great effort of using different sounds and textures to compliment the songs.. Matt is a talented and unique artist who has a vision and a dream that I can relate to because we share the same one. Speaking from the heart, if you appreciate good music and can get past the fact that this wasnt done in a studio funded by atlantic records than its a must have for any music lover. These are quality songs that can hold their own against any of the worlds more talented and estalblished well named acts. By the way just for the record Matt has no idea Im writing this review, I just felt compelled to....

Better live.......2000-02-25

I recently picked up this CD about a month ago at a gig they had in NYC. I loved it but feel that they have more energy live. Can't wait to see them again. Good luck to the band.

The next "Big Thing".......2000-02-24

If you like todays music you'll love these guys. Their raw sound is whats missing from todays music. Althought the production of the CD could be better they will get your attention with songs like "Stop Me" and "Tribe". These song have an upbeat feel to them ranging from a pop sound with a touch of punk. Then there's the song "Tomboys", a little on the comercial side which is sure to be a hit if it gets radio airplay. The rest of the CD definatly is worth a listen because each song is well rounded and stands up with todays music.
