Bandleader/trumpeter Steven Bernstein has put in time with quasi-bohemian ensembles like the Lounge Lizards and Spanish Fly. On his Sex Mob's debut, Bernstein chooses irreverent covers of songs like "Goldfinger," "House of the Rising Sun," and even the "Macarena." While there are some avant- garde sounds included here, much of Din Of Inequity is in the tradition of classic jazz and showcases the chops of Bernstein (on slide trumpet) and his tag-team partner, altoist Briggan Krauss. Anchored by the rhythm section of Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums), Bernstein and Krauss stomp and wail all over these compositions. Not only that, Bernstein also revives the works of Duke Ellington and Prince. Guests include keyboardist John Medeski and guitarist Adam Levy. A very well-rounded jazz recording. --Mitch Myers
New York Times
Din of Inequity has a thoroughly different character than most jazz records: it leaps out at you, with a shockingly hot sound. The trumpet solos crackle like the sound of ripping newspapers; the drums are crisp cracks, not muffled thuds.

WOW.......2006-03-13
Found them on satelite radio. they blew me away.
just bought their CD. Hope they have more!!!!
A very strong debut.......2006-02-01
Picking up this CD on the whim of an interview with drummer Kenny Wolleson, I was hoping some killer jazz, with some great drumming. I mean, Come on! It's jazz! It's all about the soloing!
New doors were opened up to me, musically speaking. Although pretty true to form of a traditional jazz makeup, the styles strayed sometimes a little from standard, and sometimes a lot. A lot of times, the tunes were backed up with a straight ahead rock beat. Which leads me to Wolleson's performance. For the most part, he laid down a solid groove, and he would just sit on it forever! Good example: "Sign o' the times", the Prince cover. Wolleson came in with a slow groove, and just kept it going, sparingly adding any licks or fills. When he had to sound huger, not louder, but huger, he did so very tastefully.
The best song, for me anyway, is the sixth track "Been it". Wolleson again is laying down a simple 2-4 groove. But, mix that with what the rest of the band is doing, and you all of a sudden realize that this is the perfect groove. Each member's solos throughout the album are very appropriate. Steven Bernstein's slide trumpet is a peculiar instrument, but he makes it work well. Briggan Krauss's solo in "House of Briggan" is extremely fast; Kenny G, eat it.
The McCartney cover "Live and Let Die" as the last track was a great way to round out an album. This track, for me, always signaled a sort of end to things. This cover being the last was a great display of personality. It was almost emotional, but in a more upbeat way. I personally like how there is faint laughter heard in the background upon completion of the song.
Great debut from a great band.
Love this CD!!! more please.......1999-07-04
From the moment the slide sound almost drunkenly meandered out the opening bars of "Live and Let Die" - the first track I listened to - I was in bliss! These guys have done Wings, Prince and even the spit-me-crackle-frog-me-crickle pest who inflicted the bloody "macarena" on us a favour!!! "Goldfinger" made me laugh out loud.
All in all, this is a dumb group name, even dumber CD sleeve design, but who cares? the music is fabulous. Amazon.com should certainly include this in their muso recommendations if they haven't already done so. I understnad there to be thoroughly deserved support for this CD from the Sydney "Birdland" afficionados (you know who you are). Enjoy!
cutting edge jazz.......1999-04-11
This is an absolutely incredible disc. There is not a stagnant number on the CD. All these cats can PLAY! One gets the sense they are really having fun doing this stuff. They need your support so get out there and support this music before its gone!
very raw and beautiful.......1998-12-23
This is a raw and live record, complete with camp and humor. Bernstein can really play. So do the rest of the fellas. I recommend it highly
