During his career, the talented Cuban-born, Florida-based pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba has played with the greatest jazz stars, including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lovano, and Charlie Haden. This CD, featuring longtime band mate and drummer Ignacio Berroa, bassist Carlos Henriquez, and percussionists Luis and Robert Quintero, highlights his highly evolved take on North American swing, with its dashes of his island homeland's rich Afro-Cuban musical traditions. Rubalcaba's syncopated synthesis of Liszt, Chopin, Wynton Kelly, and the clave swings easily between Cuban and U.S. musical ports-of-call. The leader's two takes of the title composition demonstrate his ease at improvising at top speed in tricky binary and tertiary time signatures. He reincarnates the old Cuban boleros "Alma Mia" into the American ballad form, and he slips John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" into his grandfather's danzon, "El Cadete." The hit tune "El Manicero (The Peanut Vendor)" is reinvigorated by Berroa's mambo cross-rhythms, Henriquez's Big Apple bass lines, and Rubalcaba's terrific tumbao breakdowns. Gonzalo Rubalcaba plays piano like a drummer and on the synth-laden, drum-featured "Orem (Pray)" he also plays congas, showcasing another aspect of his groundbreaking creativity. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Amazon.ca

For a band whose individual members each captured the spotlight in the '80s and '90s, it should come as no surprise that the music of Rock Star: Supernova (a quartet comprised of Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, Jason Newsted of Metallica, Gilby Clarke of Guns 'N' Roses, and 2006 reality-show winner Lukas Rossi) strongly hearkens back the sound of that era. Their chosen frontman Rossi, a Toronto-based singer/songwriter, has some impressive pipes, moving effortlessly from falsetto to raunchy guttural growls throughout the disc. No amateur, Rossi previously worked with Canadian bands I Mother Earth and the Tea Party, as well as Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson. The strongest tracks from the disc are unsuprisingly ones the group performed repeatedly on the series. Rossi's original number, the emotional (if somewhat erratic) "Headspin" fits in well with the prescribed other material, while "It's All Love" is both accessible and enjoyable enough to work on Top-40 radio. The unquestionable standout, however, is disc opener "It's On" within which Rossi's soprano chorus of "let it shine on" evokes the very best aspects of Radiohead's Thom Yorke's falsetto fronting a Smashing Pumpkins-style track. There are a few unfortunate tunes ("Underdog," "The Dead Parade") that contain a plethora of rock clichés but lack authenticity. That said, the aforementioned gorgeousness of the opening track shows great promise, making this a band to keep an eye on in the future. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars supernova.......2007-05-11

Watched the series on pay. Saw the guys in Brisbane - sadly minus Jason Newstead, which didn't make for a very outstanding concert. I decided to take a chance and buy the cd anyway, and am very pleased to say it is exceptional, the sound is great, Lucas does the vocals justice(even if I am biased to Toby R).
All in all a good buy, well done guys.

4 out of 5 stars Lukas Rossi is mesmerizing!!!.......2007-04-11

Lukas Rossi is totally addicting. He is one heck of a stage performer. I love his voice, his look, his writing, almost everything about him. He is the real thing. I saw Supernova in Dallas and they were Wonderful! This album is some of Lukas Rossi, but not the absolute best. Keep watching and supporting him and you will not be disapointed. He will come into his own. His older stuff with Rise Electric is really good! If you get a chance to see him live don't miss it. It will be one of the best shows you will see. He is captivating. Lukas Rossi is a real Rock Star, but I don't think he really knows that yet.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated!.......2007-03-27

I've read many reviews on this band and disagree with most of them! First of all, let me say, although I watched Rock Star; Supernova, I thought most of the so called rockers were really nerds who turned to the dark side, including some of the professionals! Still, there was an obvious standout from day 1, Lucas! Although it took me a while to warm up to his cockyness, ultimately, his pipes and edgyness won me over! After he was chosen and I heard Supernova's songs on TV, I thought they lacked edge. That's why I was pleasantly surprised when the CD was released that the edge was added. Rossi's voice not only sounds "stellar", but it is remanicently as unique as when I first head Bon Scott back in the 70's! Unlike American Idol and others, where you can tell that although there is some talent, mostly it just makes you appriciate the true professionals, Lucas slipped through producers fingers! This guy is the real deal! Supernova was lucky somebody hadn't signed him earlier. The only negative about this CD is that I had to listen to it several times before most of the songs caught my attention, except for the obvious standouts, like, "Lite the Fuse" and "Headspin". But once I listened enough, I now like almost all of them. I actually really like "The Dead Parade" except for the chorus, which is terrible! The rest of the song rocks! This CD had to be rushed into stores, so they weren't given a lot of time to come up with these songs, so I can only imagine how good they are gonna be! Unfortunately, because of the reviews I have read, I don't think this CD will sell enough to keep them together long enough for us to see them grow! I've leaned that most reviewer don't agree with what I personally like anyway, they seemed to dysect the music instead of just trying to see if they like it! Your loss, along with ours!

1 out of 5 stars Just as I expected nothing moe.......2007-03-11

I knew when I even saw the first show of this that this album/band would suck beyond belief, and now listening to this lame pop crap I was proven right. AVOID. The guys vocals were passable on the show but they blow on this album But again what did you expect look who's in the band......

2 out of 5 stars Mediorce at best.......2007-03-10

A great drummer, an excellent guitar player, and a terrific bassist combined with the hottest producer around would lead me to expect something something really great.
Unfortunately the material lacks originality and the vocalist is as limited as I feared he would be when they selected him.

Butch Walker seems to have squeezed all the fire out this record and Lukas lacks range and sounds thin and weak at times. This is just another hard rock record that has lots of the right attitude but lacks anything special.

5 out of 5 stars supernova.......2007-02-25

i love dis album by left eye.i been heard of the supernova but i never was interested in buying it till now.the only solo album by miss lisa lopes and it is off the chain.the track listing is tight and the songs are a must listen to.she talks about being misunderstood alot.LIFE IS LIKE A PARK is ok but i usually ignore this intro into this album,HOT is my favorite song off this album and why not,its a headbanger.THE BLOCK PARTY is a silly song,i just laugh when i hear it.LET ME LIVE is another one of my favorites,JENNY has a tight beat and the lyrics are tight as well.I BELIEVE IN ME,i just love the chorus.RAGS TO RICHES is ok untill later on when i get tired of hearing it.TRUE CONFESSIONS,i'm still trying to figure out what to make of this song.UNTOUCHABLE feat.tupac and ya gurl left eye at they best,i love it.HEAD TO THE SKY is a nice song, but THE UNIVERSAL QUEST is better,i like the haunting chorus and it sums up the song saying "our only responsibility is love".A NEW STAR IS BORN is just a sad song.the conversation between her and her father leaves you in tears.this is definitely a requirement for all true tlc fans or if you just love lisa "left eye" lopes, order this album. you will not be disapointed.other songs by miss left eye i want you to check out would be LEFT PIMPIN',TAMPERED WITH,FRIENDS,and a bonus from the CRAZYSEXYCOOL album titled MY SECRET ENEMY feat. t-boz herself.

5 out of 5 stars something people wasnt ready for.......2007-02-23

1. LIFE IS LIKE A PARK
it was very creative and kinda inspirational as well. she had bad boy artist carl thomas featured on the song and the song was very good.

2. HOT
This is probably the BEST song IMO on the album. The beat was done by producer "rockwilder" and the beat itself will make u love it and the the song and lyrics are also great. This was also suppose to be the 2nd single from the album before she had passed away.

3. THE BLOCK PARTY
Ok this was the 1st single released from the album. IMO this is one of the weakest songs on here and even being one of the weakest its still a good song tho. The song is just basically about when she was younger and growing up and the fun things she'd do then.

4. LET ME LIVE
Let me live is another one of my favorite tracks on here. The song is just about her and how people kinda misjudge her and say things they THINK they know but they really don't. she speaks about the things in her career she has done solo and with TLC. This is also a creative song also considering when u listen to the song in the background of the chorus she is spelling her name out.

Let me live
In inside inside intelligence
Say say say say what you gotta say
Always ask and you will be amazed

Pay attention and as she is sayin that part of the chorus in the background she is spelling her name throughout the chorus.

5.JENNY
Produced by jazze pha and another one of my favorite songs on there also. The song is really just about her and her friends and obviously her other friend JENNY. Its just a cool laid back kinda song and is worth listening to.

6. I BELIEVE IN ME
The song is exactly what it says. The song is about nobody but her lol. The song also features one of the versus from the TLC 3D album song "over me" and its verse 2 on the song on here. The song is ALL ABOUT HER.

7. RAGS TO RICHES
The song features her on again/off again then boyfriend andre rison. Not one of the best songs and one of the weak points on here but still is a good song. Its just what the title says also I mean its just about coming up from being broke and poor to getting money and being able to get yourself and your family all this stuff and houses and all.

8. TRUE CONFESSIONS
This song was VERY creative. She speaks on her and her boyfriend about how he wanted more than just the regular relationship which meant he wanted to do more things and that included having another partner included so she speaks on how he wants another girl included and how she cant deal with it anymore but later finds him cheating even after saying he was done.

9. UNTOUCHABLE
This song features 2pac shakur. The song really features her instead as it says in the booklet cuz it is HIS song and she wanted to feature him on there since he wasn't alive to really do it like she wanted since they was such good and close friends before his death. The song is VERY great tho and she could even stay on the same flow and everything with 2pac so she was really doing something then.

10. HEAD TO THE SKY
This a inspirational song. The song is talking to the kids about how they need to be so they can get further in life. She also speaks about how not letting anyone discourage you from doing something that you want to achieve in life cuz if u continue to believe it will soon happen. The song also features her female trio and fake TLC wannabe's BLAQUE with a rap by the group rapper "natina reed" and the 2 singers "brandi & shamari" singing on the chorus.

11. THE UNIVERSAL QUEST
The song is great to me. This is a song A LOT of people would not expect from someone like her but she did. The song is just something you HAVE to listen to. This is a song saying how some things are just up to you. The song is basically wanting to know who controls your life? Are you in control, are you free or are u just following whatever you feel is being told to you from god.

12. A NEW STAR IS BORN
The song is about her father who passed away around the time when TLC was just being signed back in 1992. the song is all about how she misses him and how she wishes she could once again see him and be with him but just not so soon. Unfortunately she got to go be with her father once again sooner than she really did expect to.

13. BREATH
Very good song she did good on this one and this is also another song nobody would expect to hear from her. This song is about what people do not see outside of the spotlight and outside of TLC. She is talking about who she REALLY is and she just wants to breath and she wants you to see HER as LISA NICOLE LOPES and not just as LEFT EYE of TLC. She also speaks on the industry and how she puts on her faces for the fans when she has to. She talks about how she has to deal with the criticism from everyone about mostly anything when it comes to her.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2006-01-09

5 out of 5 stars worth the wait.......2004-12-12

i luv this album. ive wanted it since i heard about it. i was mad when i heard that it had only been realeased in the UK. so i spend over a year trying to find the clean version and i couldnt find it. my dad didnt want me getting the explicit lyric version, but anyways, i just got it yesterday (the explicit version) and i already love it. my fave song on it is untouchable ft. 2pac....... those are my 2 fave rappers (left eye and 2pac).. both on the same song?? its soooooooo good. on the song called i believe in me, theres a rap that was included in the song "over me" on TLC's album 3D. its good. all the songs are good though. its a really good album and the wait was worth it. also, parents, the reason that its parental advissory is the language. at least i didnt hear anything "inappropriate". so if ur kid rly wants it, just get it 4 em, chances are ur NOT gonna find the clean version anytime soon.

Dominic Cifarelli's rise to fame started as guitarist of Montreal metal band Pulse Ultra, whose 2002 debut album release Headspace earned them a slot on the second stage of the 2002 Ozzfest alongside bands such as System of A Down, Meshuggah, Ozzy Osbourne and White Zombie. Dominic was also featured on the cover of Guitar One's "The New Guitar Heroes - 10 Players You Must Know" in November of the same year. Since the split of Pulse Ultra in 2004 Dominic has worked along side Rock Star Supernova winner Lukas Rossi in Rise Electric, with whom he co-wrote the hit track "Headspin." He is currently in the final mixing stages of his debut solo album "The Chronicles of Israfel," a semi-instrumental guitar masterpiece, based on a story he created. The first part finds the main character on a journey of self discovery which reveals his true superior inner design. Excellent CD. I purchased Supernova and Nocturne (Haden & Rubalcaba) and I prefer the former. It's diversity and the inner harmony makes listening a pure pleasure. Supernova and Oro are my favourite tracks.
    Strongly recommended.

...P>This is an excellent CD by one of the most talented pianists in jazz. Melodic and beautiful but easily complex enough to reward repeated listenings.

4 out of 5 stars first impressions aren't always correct.......2002-08-22

When first putting this CD into the player and hearing the first dissonant, disjointed chords, I thought that I had wasted my money in purchasing this recording. The longer I listened, however, the more the music appealed to me, and I found myself actually enjoying the music during the second listening.
Rubalcaba's immense talent and range are evident throughout the recording, and that makes the CD even more worth buying and listening to.

    5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2001-11-05

(...) How bizarre that (educated listeners) can hear this album and be unaware of it's sheer absolute brilliance. Perhaps (they) couldn't hear hear the perfect sense of time, or the inventive harmonies or the sheer originality of every tune(including The peanut vendor) albeit an old standard but never done better than it is here. To sum up, this album is near perfect and to compare it to Gonzalos' previous releases (as some of the other reviewers have done)is to do it a very unfair and unjustified disservice.

1 out of 5 stars Misguided Effort Results in 5* Turkey!.......2001-10-28

A hugely disappointing production from the otherwise highly regarded Rubalcaba. Can this really be the same man who worked to such good effect with Charlie Haden on "Nocturne"?

This CD is based on such weak material that after initially auditioning it (I wouldn't pass comment on any music without first listening to it at least ten times) I have left it well alone.

The reason? Well, Mr Rubalcaba may be an excellent pianist but he needs solid material to work with. The material here is exceptionally weak and uses compositions such as the overused "The Peanut Vendor" without adding anything new in the interpretation. Really, we can do without this - it is neither pushing forward the boundaries or redoing what already exists in a valid way. If Mr Rubalcaba wants to set himself up as a sort of cliched, bargain-basement Cuban rent-a-pianist then he is going the right way about it. He should know better.

For an illustration of what a latin pianist can do check out Danilo Perez on "Central Avenue" and leave this one where it belongs - in the store.

Imagine a more pissed off Jesus Lizard's David Yow being backed by a noisy guitar attack mixed with some prog and industrial stylings and you have Today is the Day. Although I don't care for a lot of the later material, except for In Eyes of God and Temple of the Morning Star, I really recommend Supernova. Rembember this came out around the same time as Korn's debut, and TITD were obviously a far superior, dangerous and groundbreaking band

    4 out of 5 stars 6 Dementia Review.......2004-03-04

This is a rare album, containing some tracks that TitD still play live today, those being "Black Dahlia" and "6 Dementia Satyr". This record is a prime slab of Amphetamine Reptile Noise Rock, but TitD inject their own fiercely personal and dark edge. The best tracks are the first two, but the price of the disc is worth it for "6 Dementia Satyr" alone. Hell, the whole album could be that one song, and I'd listen to it all the damn time! Literally the best song, next to "Spotting a Unicorn", that TitD has ever done. Essential.

The best synthpop band ever!!! In my opinion they have never done even one bad song. I think Joey sounds like Kurt Harland from Information Society. I enjoy this band even more when they turn up the guitars a notch instead of keeping them in the background. Wouldn't it be great if they could get radio play and discover a whole new audience but then again it would be only temporary. The american listening public is fickle. Stay true guys and keep the vibe for jesus going!!

I've tried to get my hands on anything by this band, and by far, this is the best release they've ever had. A must have. Absolutely incredible. A sub-limely positive spin on something that sounds like a cross between Depeche Mode, New Order and Anything Box, with christianity thrown in (subversely) just to make it inspired.

They haven't gone on many nation wide tours, but when TEG have toured, they've toured with best-friend band Skillet a lot of the time. And a LOT of people know Skillet. So if you've seen Skillet in concert, you've probably seen TEG too. You just don't remember them. Shame on you.
If you don't know these guys, then you better jump on right now, cause Supernova, TEG's mellenium release, has the power to blow the people down. Though TEG is more lyrically subtle here than Skillet on Invincible (same year release), the techno/rock music will certainly grab your attention. And if you can understand metaphoric poetry lyrics glazed with introspectivity, then these lyrics will throw you out of your seat! The title track paints a picture where one searches the world for happiness in vain, then in blind faith comes across the "Supernova" that is God. "Yesterday's Taking Over" sympathizes with those who are discouraged from Christ's delaying of His return, saying "When it feels like there's no tomorrow...Don't let your dreams come tumbling down". "She's Gone Tragic", TEG's most popular song to date, bears down on the habits many females develope of becoming self-inflictingly "grief addicted" after her heart has been broken ("If there were something that could make her happy/She won't say it, she won't mean it"). The song encourages those females, "There's someone she could run to when it all comes crashing down". "Liberation" is on the same page, lyrically, but musically, it grinds and growls with frustration to bridge over the message of pain the singer feels. Then, on a positive note, ends with "Take this pain and let it go/Freedom comes with eyes wide open/Hope unchained in pure devotion till freedom". "Waterfall" beautifully describes the feeling one has when one realizes he is literally falling in love with God, then without knowing why finds he is willing to do anything for the love of the Creator ("If the only way to you was down/I'd willingly drown to find you there"). "Thief" cleverly reveals the hazards of wasting time making the decision of your destiny. For while you take your time, time itself turns into "an unseen thief" and sneakily makes disappear all you ever loved. "December" is yet another song about letting go of the sadness one might hold on to after a heartbreak ("Don't tell me that it's so worth saving"). Jubilation, a re-make of a song from the eighties, warns listeners not to take life's blessings for granted. "Defender" paints a slightly more different picture of God than we'd expect. We usually see God has someone to guide us, not necessarily defend us. But TEG reminds planet Earth that God is our protector as well. While we struggle on our own, there's an invincible "Defender" waiting to be asked for help. And the ending "Nightfall And Splendor" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. Written by smalltime composer, Jyro Xahn, it is a beautifully built masterpiece. The haunting, soft techno effects, plus the sweet innocence of Chrissy's voice will surely envelope you in a solemn, moving, desperate cry for help from God to heal a seemingly hopeless broken heart. A lyric quotation would never do this song justice. If this song were the only good one on the album, I'd still buy it and I'd still tell you it's worth every penny. I would pay the cost just for that song. In fact I'd pay that much for all but two of the songs (Jubilation and Liberation are personal turn-offs for me).

5 out of 5 stars "Supernova" demonstrates members' abilities to rock, too........2002-07-10

Since 1998, I have found everything that I could get my hands on by The Echoing Green, and in my opinion, Supernova shows a very energetic and powerful facet that hasn't been shown by The Green, at least as far as I know. Older fans (than me) will find several remixes (such as She's Gone Tragic, Thief and Defender) and some new pieces. Comparable to Skillet's "Invincible," released the same year, the guitars are driven by thumping loops, buzzing background melodies and sweet vocal harmonies. Supernova is a great example of Joey Belville's ability to convey the same song in another context and a different emotional color. This album also demonstrates Joey's versatility in writing, with the aggressive and almost invasive sounds of "Liberation" to Chrissy Franklin singing the worshipful "Nighfall&Splendor." All in all, very good work, best to date from The Echoing Green!

    5 out of 5 stars ¡Increible!.......2001-10-16

        3 out of 5 stars a good song, a so-so single.......1999-11-27

As much as I like Liz Phair, I could not recomend shelling out the bucks for this disc unless you just have to get anything she's ever released. The title song is great, but if you're a fan, you already have it. The edited version deletes the song's only expletive, so you're not really missing anything. "combo-platter" is a fairly lack-luster song from the rather lo-fi girly-sound tapes that really doesn't do the girl justice anyway. If you're buying it just for "combo-platter", do yourself a favor and try to track down a bootleg copy of girly-sound.

4 out of 5 stars Yeah! That's more like it........1999-05-19

Although I'm the same person that trashed "Exile in Guyville," this song knocks me out! I love the guitar work, the lyrics are rude yet endearing, even poetic in a weird way. Phair's voice still grates on my nerves but "Supernova" is a song meant for high-volume listening.

5 out of 5 stars Skip the SuperNova and race straight for the platter........1999-01-31

"And now you're sleeping with that girl that you used to say that you have always hated..don't be so in love with yourself 'cause I'm not."

With jewels like this, the cd is worth every penny. Supernova was never a flame-throwing favorite of mine, but it never has let me down yet. The classic sound with a switched up layout of Combo Platter more than makes up for any other fault one could find with the album.

4 out of 5 stars I'm the first person to review this CD!.......1998-07-09

I find it hard to believe that no one has yet said anything about one of Liz Phair's most loved singles. Supernova, one of the few Liz songs you may actually have heard on the radio, is an anthem as energetic as the "human supernova" it's dedicated to: it IS the "angel with wings of fire" of Phair's repertoire. Over a redundant but snarling guitar, she voices amazing lyrics. Here's a typically sparkling bit:

"you walk in clouds of glitter / and the sun reflects your eyes / and everytime the wind blows / i can smell you in the skies / your kisses are as wicked as an f-16 / and you f@#$ like a volcano and you're everything to me..."

Beautiful. This song does have shortcomings; it is not as creative as many of her others, which strike the ear a little more strangely. However, it's still a rocking single and a decent introduction to Liz Phair's more complex songwriting.

Super duper fun! A totally irresistible pop album that is as wacky as the Presidents of the United States of America's debut, but somehow more fulfilling. Maybe it's those three or four extra guitar strings that Supernova have up on the Presidents that give them the musical edge. I'm utterly aghast that this is an Am Rep release, but it's a damn fine one all the same. You'll need an appreciation of dork rock to get into Supernova, but this is entertaining, brainless fun. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Ross is an old fuddy duddy!.......2002-01-08

This is one of the best CDs ever! All of my friends like it, regardless of what kind of music they listen to. I first heard the 7"s and "Chewbacca" and all that before this came out, but this kills all of their earlier stuff. Although the early stuff is awesome too. But I digest!

This is the funnest CD ever. I don't care if funnest isn't a word! It is to me. And I bet it was to Supernova. I got to see these guys twice, even living in the Midwest, and I had a smile on my face the whole time. I can't really compare the original guitarist to the 2nd one, but could the original dude do the throw-the-guitar-around-the-neck thing? And he did a little Roger Rabbit type dance the entire time he played. But back to the CD.

From the second that "Vitamins" starts, you can't help bobbing your head. And when his goofy voice kicks in, you can't help but smile. The best word for this band is goofy. But not in a stupid way. Well, maybe in a stupid way, but not in an annoying way. I can't really see anyone NOT liking this. Don't even listen to the song samples. Just buy it and then listen to "Vitamins," "Daredevil," "Hippy" and "Supersong" in their entirety.

2 out of 5 stars If you could only hear the original lineup.......1999-12-16

Ever seen the movie "Clerks" by Kevin Smith? You know, his first movie before he did "Mallrats", "Chasing Amy", "Dogma", etc. He had a song in that film called "Chewbacca" (long before the South Park guys did one at the end of one of their episodes, btw)

"Chewbacca" was by Supernova. It is not featured in this first full length album. This album was made after the original guitarist left the band. Some of the songs here are from the days of the original lineup. But they don't seem the same. After the lineup change, their live act continued to be the same too, what with the silver spacesuits and helmets and all.

But I remember when they were one of the coolest bands on the planet. I remember songs like "Mechanical" and "Supersong", "Drool" AND "Chewbacca" that totally ruled the world. There was even one time that a guy gave them 5 bucks to play "Chewbacca", and they obliged, ripping up the place with energy and fun that you don't see much anymore.

This album takes the energy and fun and adds a "goof" factor. If the "goofy" part existed before at least it was portrayed with some irony. This album seems like an attempt at making a formula out of those original, awesome songs. Listen to those orignals as they appear here and imagine what you missed.

        5 out of 5 stars very hip ,cool,and funny.......1998-11-12

i like all the songs on there thier so cool.i went to one of their concerts and it was awesome they got every one so riled up the show was fantastic,so if your thinking about buying a cd of thier's please don't delay.they put a lot of energy into this and deserve credit.
