This rising jazz guitar star writes unlikely music. Equally mysterious, eerie, contemplative, serene, buoyant, and forlorn, Kurt Rosenwinkel's music follows no discernible fashion. Though he's influenced by Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, Rosenwinkel's second Verve release (the follow-up to 2000's Enemies of Energy) more aptly recalls the early ECM recordings of guitarist John Abercrombie and drummer Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition band. Steeped in unusual tunings, zigzagging melodies, and a highly sensitive and loosely supercharged band, The Next Step works, especially for those patient enough to dig through its dense fabric. An equal number of post-bop workouts and haunting ballads occupy the CD, but even when the musicians (saxophonist Mark Turner, drummer Jeff Ballard, bassist Ben Street) are in full wail, a sense of fragile contemplation marks the music.

The intricate "Zhivago" and "A Shifting Design" show Rosenwinkel's unique guitar and compositional personality--his fingers and his mind seem as one, almost as if he doesn't really need a band to consummate his music. And when he sings (wordlessly) along with his probing guitar designs, he rides high over the band while seeming deep in his own head. The ballads--"Paths of the Heart," "Use of Light," and the beginning of "A Shifting Design"--perfectly capture some sci-fi deep space silence, where abandoned crafts drift in the darkness of a black vacuum. But Rosenwinkel also bumps and boogies like mad on "Filters," dedicated to Wes Montgomery, which features dynamite Turner-Rosenwinkel interplay and a gripping, hot-as-coals melody. For the title track, Rosenwinkel is on piano, and he sounds for all the world like a Chick Corea composition before it blasts off into a hardy, free-blues shuffle. Quixotic, cerebral, and a bit magical, The Next Step plots the unusual path of this freethinking guitarist. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars Excellent representative CD.......2006-06-17

I hosted some friends to Kurt at the Jazz Bakery last week. Thought it was important for them to see this rising composer and player. These music lovers are not really jazz followers but were almost immediatly immersed in the melodic haunting progressions. It was a great night. Next Step most nearly captures the sound and feel of this group live. Mark Turner and Kurt have great report. I love Deep Song as much, but it is a more collaborative effort with Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau. Next Step has the full range of this musician's unique sound.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-02-22

I didn't think Rosenwinkel could top "Deep Song" but this album proved me wrong. This is his best album yet. Unlike "Heartcore" which is industrious but lacks good songwriting, this album is great from start to finish. And unlike "EC Love Affair" which is a bit to swingy, and at times scattered, this album has a great consistent feel that still manages to vary just enough.

I absolutely love Deep Song, but I gotta admit that even despite my love of Mehldau, Grenadier, Redman, and Yahel, the reason I think this album is better is that the group chemistry is fantastic. Kurt's guitarwork is also much more aggressive on this one. I completely disagree with the negative comments in regards to the sax on this album. I think his playing fits perfectly with Kurt and the group.

If you like great jazz guitar, and great tunes, this is the KR album to check out.

Jeff Ballard's drumming continues to amaze me.

I hope this group of musicians will tour soon.

5 out of 5 stars The new century rocks.......2005-09-18

One simple soul like me should be granted the right to give an album six stars. For people have the tendency to give five stars for mediocrity and that leaves me embarrassed.
Rosenwinkels "The Next Step" is among the greatest of the great. His star should be shinning bright and so it does. Now all we have to do is take notice!
The great albums come from different buildingmaterials. The most important is a leader with the knowledge of his or hers superior technique on his or hers instrument. This knowledge most come into the world in the shape of shyfull confidence. This leader most know that he or she is playing with a group and that leading is giving room to the groupmembers. Rosenwinkel knows how to be part of a group. Mark Turner on tenor sax, Ben Street on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums now how to be thankfull. They all play extremely good and make beauty take form. Never a dull moment.
An other part of the buildingmaterials is the craftsmanship in writing and experimentation. Without this quality an album can't be great. Rosenwinkel obviously has these qualities. All eight pieces are beautiful and well thought-out. The music makes you the listener. I am compelled by Rosenwinkels group to listen and find out what they are doing. Out standing!!!

5 out of 5 stars Anyone Who Gives This Album A Bad Rating Is Crazy!!!!!!.......2005-03-01

Simply put......this album blows my mind! It's a very exciting album, especially if you're a guitarist. Rosenwinkel's got a fantastic sense of melody, harmony, and rhythm. He plays like a cross between Wes Montgomery, Bill Frisell, and Pat Metheny with some Kenny Burrell and John Abercrombie thrown in for good measure. Having said that, he's got a very unique style.

The compositions themselves remind me alot of Kevin Eubanks and John Scofield. Most of the songs have a real swinging feeling to them, which I love, but there are also some beautifully melodic songs here too. This album should satisfy all jazz fans with its subtle, low-key tonality.

The musicians are all top notch too. Mark Turner on tenor saxophone plays with incredible ease and never shows off or becomes annoying. Jeff Ballard's drumming is up to par with such greats as Elvin Jones, Harvey Mason, and dare I say Tony Williams? Ben Street on bass provides the songs with some great grooves...he's as good as Steve Swallow or Charlie Haden.

Rosenwinkel proves to be one of the most prolific composers and guitarist on the scene today and anyone who wants to check out his music should start with "The Next Step."

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2004-05-14

tihs is a very good CD and i recommend it. the pieces are pretty interesting and some are even beautiful. eventhough i usually like mark turner, here at some points it seems he doesn't know exactly what to do, and falls back on things that get boring pretty fast. i especially like mark's sound (he rarely use any vibrato) and very gentle approach. kurt plays very nice, and the drummer is excellent. after all this all i can say is you should get it.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning..........2006-05-26

"The Next Step" (1998) was the start for one of the most consistant groups in hiphop, period. People under the stairs to this day have still not come out with an album that has disappointed or paled in comparison to other releases, everything they do is pure HipHop, straight "for the love", no bullish. And this is the foundation, the one that started it all, the one that they had to run around san fran just giving out free copies to promote themselves with...this is the underground. And just for that fact alone, I recomend this album. Now if you've never heard of PUTS, they are made up of Producer/MC Thes One & DJ/Producer/MC Double K both of whom compliment each other perfectly with their funky LA personalities and mutual relationship that just makes everything sound right. Now, it is often said that PUTS' work is never ever groundbreaking, or revolutionary, or "nothing different" so "why the hype?". Understand, the difference with PUTS is they pretty much symbolise the saying "dont F' with it, if it don't need fixin'", and when we talk about "it" we mean HipHop. PUTS have an old school approach to their music, with the help of some SP1200's and MPC's, both thes one and double K are the ultimate beat makers, finding some of the most un-used samples and flipping 'em to make every beat they do as tight as it can get! Admittedly, PUTS are not the most orginial lyricists ever, but it's their relatable honesty & chilled - out LA mentality that make them utterly captivating when they decide to start talking. Besides, not all "good lyricism" means strict multiple rhyming, creative metaphors & similies etc, as "lyrics" means the substance, and if the substance is far from brainwashing, generic crap then whats to say it isn't brilliant lyricism? It depends on the listeners ability to understand where the artist is coming from, and their aim.
The Next Step is made up of 15 tracks and 1 skits. Now, there is not one weak track on the album, with "San Francisco Knights" being one of the best tracks ever to come from the West, period. The beat is just ridiculous! which just sums up the brilliance of PUTS. "Los Angeles Daze" is equally as brilliant, with a sample that will send shivers down your spine, and just make you reach for that rewind button! Tracks like "Mid City Fiesta" bring that funky, positive vibe that is definitely feel-good music but is far from a cheesy attempt. "Time to rock our sh*t" brings that typical backpacking fire! with Thes one & double k displaying their lyricial ability, over once again, a flawless beat that makes you think "why have I not heard of these cats before?". Featurings on the album, are limited, just like the old school. With natives Smile-oak, Assualt, Naimad & Shine dropping by for the ride, contributing their bit. People under the stairs just sum up everything still good about Hiphop, bringing that natural love that all fans of boom bap, old school, early-mid 90's and all of that other "true" hiphop will undoubtedly appreciate. PUTS are still broke as ever, and as slept on as ever, & it is your duty as a self-proclaimed hiphop fan to now pick up this album and everthing else by PUTS and support the best group still going, recognise. PEACE!!!

Also Check out: "Question in the form of an answer" (2000), OST (2002), "Or stay tuned EP" (2003) and their best "Stepfather" (2006)!

5 out of 5 stars And this is just their debut album!.......2004-01-26

While you listen to this album, keep in mind that this is People Under the Stairs first album! It is so tight- excellent creative and groovy beats(production could be better), dope lyrics, and an album to hit 'play' and not have to skip songs. Get this or consider yourself out of the loop!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rap Album.......2003-11-02

I recently bought this CD, and it is one of those albums that you can listen to all the way through without skipping any tracks, and then start over again at track one and listen through again. The beats are amazing, and vary a good deal, and the rhymes are nearly perfect. San Francisco Knights is one of the best rap tracks i have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars this is for all you who cant get enough of that true school.......2003-09-25

'they said it was all glitz.. i exhale, this sh*t is stale, old bidis are like new hip hop..' this album along with EVERY other PUTS release is as fresh as it gets for old school/true school.
PUTS are one of the only still following the 'all break beat/no key board no drum pack' style hip hop.. as in every sound you hear is literally another piece of another song somewhere else in time. all this new industry made hip hop is horrible. if youre looking for relief from today's 'hip hop' b**ch-made music its time for you to turn to the people under the stairs.. and id suggest you start with next step. thats an album with alot of funky breaks, really fat beats and the freshest of lyrics. reminds me alot of tribe called quest back in the day. its a gem.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this any more . . ........2002-12-17

People Under The Stairs are some of the last true hiphop producers. PUTS and J5 seem to be the last real beat-diggers. The good old days of sampling loops off old funk and soul records to make decent hip-hop records are nearly over.

For a start this was their first LP, constructed from an extensive array of undiscovered breaks ranging from south america to europe and probably further. I can't imagine how many hours these guys spend digging for beats.

PUTS rhyme in an old-school way. Maninly slow flows, somewhat similar to J5. More of a party vibe. It makes a change from the cram-as-many-words-into-a-bar style of many of todays MC's. Also PUTS rhyme about fairly cheerful stuff, going to parties and getting drunk etc.

You just have to listen to San Francisco Knights to see that this is no run of the mill LP.
It is far from the modern 'beep-line' over a rock guitar break neptunes type sound. This is one of those LP's that you will keep coming back to.

Aaron, you're better off listening to Linkin Park, funkFlex & other chart music. Listen to another 500 hiphop LP's then check PUTS again . . . . . you're welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore is hardcore, too.......2002-04-20

Next Step Up is simply the best hardcore band nobody has ever heard of. I first saw these guys play over 10 years ago in a church hall in DC with Clutch, who were just playing their first shows. NSU is ultra ultra hardcore in the vein of early Integrity. JR's vocals are loud, deep, and powerful, never getting lost in the rumbling rhythms of the band. The Fall From Grace album is alright, but this disc is the one that best represents what this band does, and that is simply to crush all challengers in a blizzard of EXTREMELY heavy grooves. The only better presentation of this is NSU's original vinyl 12" album, which included what is a local hardcore classic, "Heavy." But this disc does include "Karma," one of NSU's all-time best, in my humble opinion one of hardcore music's all-time best. If available, pick up everything by NSU you can get your hands on. You will not regret it.

        Product Description

The next bold step forward from former Spinning Jennies frontman Jeff Shelton, “Under the Arrows” picks up where last year’s Well Wishers debut left off – with even bigger hooks, warm ringing guitars, and cascading vocal harmonies. Pure pop – through and through.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great power pop.......2006-01-21

Power pop has to be really good to gain my attention, and then approval. These guys are really good. Their first album reminded me of Hollies and Beatles-style pop, but here they're even better with a pop style more reminiscent of Squeeze. Excellent songwriting, and a warm delivery that's just powerful enough to keep it non-wussy. These guys would be a guilty pleasure if I felt at all guilty about it.
