I love it......
The Service with Amazon is excellent too.

Thanks for being there.

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing.......2007-03-31

This CD is nearly as relaxing as a Deepak Chopra CD. I am a voice in the chorus in that I originally bought it for use in a U.S. History class, but the Cd is great in its own right. Especially with tracks like Ashokan Farewell, and Battle Hymn of the Republic, this CD really is an amazing peace of work (although Ashokan Farewell isn't actually from the Civil War).

4 out of 5 stars A great peice of Civil War history........2007-02-14

This CD is a good buy for any Civil War buff. Even though it was intended for use as a soundtrack I would recomend it. It has many of the time honored songs that we associate with the period and the sound quality is great. I bought this CD with the intention of useing it in a high-school U.S History class, but it as has good non-educational merit.

5 out of 5 stars Music Befitting This Most Tragic of Wars.......2007-02-12

Why does it seem that some music becomes intrinsically connected to an event? Perhaps I should have said why is there such an affinity between certain soundtracks and the subject material? One thinks of films as wide-ranging as Twelve Monkeys (Astor Piazzolla), Lonesome Dove (Basil Poledouris) or Schindler's List (John Williams) and the music seems as integral to the film as the dialogue. That's the way it is in this case. That soulful, rising and falling sound of the violin, the rustic tunes with rural roots - all accentuate those terrible times with beauty and pathos. To put it bluntly, I find it difficult to believe that there will ever be a greater match between the visual and audible than is the case here. My Grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Capitivating sounds for Confederate or Union Ancestors.......2007-01-10

If You Love America and would like to hear music that will haunt Your Soul forever then I recommend this CD. This music helps You form a better understanding of who we were in America over 100 years ago. I recommend this CD for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Intimacy and freeness........2007-03-07

"People come and people go and things change," sings Molly Johnson.
She's as good as her words.
The Toronto singer-songwriter reinvented herself as a jazz vocalist a few years back.
And her third solo release proves it was a change for the better.
This dozen-track set captures the Billie Holidayish vocalist in a fittingly playful and wonderfully elastic mood, mixing it up with a tight little combo accented with horns.
Molly does exactly as her album title, "Messin' Around", suggests--she messes around with her genre. It is important to note, however, that messing around is very different from messing up, and the melodic liberties she has taken are not mistakes.
With a voice similar to Billie Holiday, this Canadian blues/jazz extraordinaire takes her audience back to an era when music was a little simpler, bands played from the soul and vocalists sang--actually sang. Johnson delivers her vocals with an intimacy and freeness that establishes her as an artist who sings solely for herself, not for fame, fortune or narcissism.
A veteran of her field, her lyrics also reflect a maturity gained only through time and experience. Delivered in a light-hearted and unpretentious tone, Johnson's insights leave her listeners pondering the finer things in life.
Johnson has laugh lines, crooked teeth and frizzy hair, but the self-confidence she exudes in her album photo and in her delivery blow any of the airbrushed competition away.
The album is brilliant because of the sheer simplicity of it--no synthesizers, no orgasmic moans and no Mariah trills.
By leaving her songs almost stark naked, Johnson exposes more of herself than any costume Christina Aguilera has ever worn.
Despite the deceiving bubblegum pink cover, Molly Johnson is no bubblegum pop star; she's a solid musical force not to be messed around with.

5 out of 5 stars Weaving the genres .......2004-08-17

A fine mix of jazz and.. other genres. Modern abstract, a bit of pop, some Reggae, lounge, torch, even a genuinely new take on Gershwin's Summertime. Very "together" small-group jazz+[name another genre]. Like Norah Jones or Madelyn Peyroux, she takes what she likes from just about anywhere. Must be a trend, this mixing of genres, but whoever said mixing the best of this with very good that couldn't produce fine music? The spare production helps here by letting the mix of musical shapes stand out instead of drowning in overproduced strings, horns and general excess. She doesn't have to work hard to overcome the production (the feeling one might sometimes get from, for example, Dinah Washington) so she can just let her voice roam around the arrangements, using her interpretive skills to weave a kind of effortless magic. Oddly, maybe, her delivery and choice of material at times reminds me of Julie London, whose interpretive skills were underrated by the critics of her day. But Mollie Johnson is definitely her own artist, independent, mischievous, subtle. Great fireside music, or put on a headset and shut your eyes. She'll captivate you. A fine album.

5 out of 5 stars She's THE ONE!.......2003-12-10

Of course nobody knows her in the States (why doesn't that surprise), where anything "non-American", especially Canadian is met with suspicion, to say the least. But know this: Molly is the one! She has an amazing voice, full of nuances, a real interpreter, not just a singer. And I had the joy of seeing her live...simply delightful...and so funny, made me laugh all the time. If you're looking for a very personal, talented jazz singer, who's brave enough to be different from the rest, go for Molly. She does not play safe and, boy, ain't that exciting!

5 out of 5 stars Discover Molly Johnson.......2003-08-04

I had never heard of Molly Johnson until I was watching the dvd of Soul Food the tv show. I had to backtrack several times because I just loved the singer who was performing. I checked the soundtrack from the tv show and her song was not on it. I then checked several stores that I buy used cds from and could not find her cd anywhere. I just found it today at Best Buy and absolutley loved it. I hope to hear more from this artist in the future.

5 out of 5 stars caught by track one.......2003-07-15

i came upon this CD in the listening station at a large music store. having never even heard of molly johnson before i decided to give it a listen, and from the intro to track one, the title song 'another day,' i was hooked. there's such an easy groove found here - between blues and jazz and pop even - that just sounds irresistable.

imagine my surprise when i heard molly tackle 'miss celie's blues (sister)' - a song i haven't heard since last i saw 'the color purple' which must have been about a decade ago. and her completely refreshing take on gershwin's summertime made a smile break out on my face when i realised what song it was.

to all those music lovers who've been listening to her for years, you're lucky. to those not fortunate enough to have already discovered her, buy it ASAP. she's jazzy enough, soulful enough, and completely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars blown away in the states.......2003-06-30

It's a pattern isn't it?...these Canadian artists showing us their purity and poetry--pointing out to US the way? Well all I can say is 'get ready to stand in line' because in this voice I think I hear the future of jazz vocalism. Not to deminish the success of Norah Jones (who I enjoy) but 'please'. If it weren't enough that you couldn't not love someone who'd record "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister) in the first place, then ponder her rendition of "Summertime" for all its originality or, better even, brace yourself for "Melody"--one of those moments where singer and songwriter meet with an intimacy that soars with inspiration. A CD that restores your faith that artistry is still out there rich and fertile and speaking to us--if we'll only listen.

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-06-21

What can I say? I have a weakness for the real deal... Molly Johnson is as close to perfect as it gets with regard to her assortment of cool and sassy songs on her self-titled debut album. The diversity of song styles on MOLLY JOHNSON just some how meld together into a comprehensive collection. A sophisticated effort, indeed with nods to classic styles of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, but that's not where it ends by any means... Think also Janis Joplin and perhaps more contemporary, Lucinda Williams. The songs are clever as well. I like every single one of them. From the sultry, "My Oh My," to the lush and cynical, "Long Wave Goodbye" which features the very last recorded effort by the late Stephane Grappelli. "I made a promise to myself that I would sooner rot in hell than spend another moment with you..." she croons beautifully on this one. Yet, my favorite track on the project is the hit-sounding, "Diamond In My Hand." Also really appreciate the jazzy, "It's Only Love (and I believed you)" the Smoothjazz.com Hot Pick, "Sweetest World," and speaking of Billie Holiday, wait until you hear Molly's version of "Don't Explain." This listening experience is filled with wow factor from beginning to end, from production to arrangement. It's a fantastic release and there's no wonder why Marquis is re-releasing the renowned Canadian's first foray into music. Give Norah and Diana a break and insert Molly into the player! ~Sandy Shore

5 out of 5 stars perfection.......2005-03-17

This is an album i've been waiting for for a long time. Ms Johnson has been a fixture on the Toronto scene for ever (relatively speaking given her age) and has always had an impecable reputation for class and talent. She was instrumental in developing the Kumbaya festival for Aids research in Toronto getting together the cream of Canadian talent for the festival for a couple of years in the 80's. Also in the 80's she was in a bad called the Infidels which performed harder edged songs that was moderately successful.
Well after a loooooong wait we get this album and it was worth the wait. This album is beautiful, intelligent, classy, in a word - perfect!!! It is quite a hybrid of jazz, pop and blues without a weak song in the collection. Her version of Billie Holiday's 'Don't Explain' is amazingly haunting and for me, the highlight of the album. I would even venture to say it surpasses Ms Holiday's. From the first listen, I was hooked and if you appreciate good music from a unique talent then this is the album for you.
Addendum: Molly Johnson's follow up 'Another Day' is every bit as wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous voice over smooth tracks...get this now!.......2005-09-12

I was in Paris, dining with a wonderful friend at a quaint little restaurant on the Ile de St. Louis when I heard this voice...incredible, strong, authentic...singing Miss Celie's Blues so well, I thought I was listening to the soundtrack from the Color Purple.

The songs that followed were so lovely and enchanting, I was compelled to ask the host what was playing. He showed me the CD and as soon as I left the restaurant, I headed straight to the record store to purchase it.

The music is perfect background for dinner with friends or as an upbeat mood setter with a significant other. Buy it! You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars very enjoyable music.......2004-06-13

My wife and I listened to the album last night while talking and having drinks and we found the music to be wonderful for a quiet evening at home. We knew we enjoyed Molly's voice but we also enjoyed the music as well. I certainly recommend the album to anyone who is looking for an upbeat and enjoyable listen for a quietly fun evening.

5 out of 5 stars Molly Johnson is great!.......2004-03-03

We just received this album and can't believe what a fine jazz and blues vocalist Molly is. She deserves to be right up there with Diana Krall, Norah Jones, et al.

5 out of 5 stars Better than both Norah and Diana.......2003-11-11

On "Another Day" Molly Johnson does what Norah Jones may someday be able to do and what Diana Krall can only wish for. Johnson gets her whole soul into each number so convincingly that even standards seem as though she wrote them herself. Like a great actress, Johnson not only sings the tunes, she performs them in the truest sense of that word.

She has a beautiful, fully mature voice, tremendous timing and phrasing, and her band... well...

Contemporary vocal jazz does not get better than this.

There are jazz singers who have the gift of range. This woman has a gift for EXPRESSION. This is a slow, hot, Big Easy kind of lady.... Experience and retrospection. Molly Johnson is a new kind of classic.

4 out of 5 stars She' different ... and hot!.......2002-11-04

I run a pirate radio station in Northwest Washington (about 6 miles from the Canadian border). A few months ago, I downloaded Molly's "Long Wave Goodbye", and have played it several times on my program. This is great stuff! Molly is an incredibly gifted jazz artist, but is only heard occasionally on Canadian radio CBC ... and my little pirate station. I'm buying the CD from Amazon, 'cause I want the other tracks! I say, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Molly Does it All !.......2002-04-15

I heard one of this album song "My Oh My" and I took a chance and got this album which took me 2 Months to get it after looking everywhere, but was it worth it , OH YES ! Her "I Will" is great. The choice of different songs is excellent. She does both the upbeat and the soft and all are great. The "One Hundred Cigarettes" is everybody waiting for the call that never came. And for the different "Monkey " is it. Their are 12 songs on this Album and 10 are favorites for me . Buy this Album you will fall in love with it. !!!

    5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2001-12-08

I was at Molly Johnson's May 2000 concert at the National Library in Ottawa too (small world) and was blown away. I hadn't heard of her before and was brought to the concert by a friend who had a campus radio show and occaisonally played her music. Molly's voice is amazing but what is most striking is that she wrote at least some of the songs herself - they sound like standards. Move over Diana Krall, this is the real queen of contemporary jazz. I can hardly wait until Molly is "discovered" and hits it big.

5 out of 5 stars Molly Johnson - Awesome CD.......2001-08-03

A friend of mine was driving through Toronto and heard "My oh My" on the radio. Back in Minnesota, he purchased the CD and just played it for me last night ... I can't quit singing it and just ordered my own CD. Molly's music grabs you and doesn't let go.
