The former JB returned to prominence with this 1991 recording, his second for Verve. Buttressed by old cohorts Pee Wee Ellis on tenor and Fred Wesley on trombone, Parker's alto sounds displays tremendous, intense urgency without leaving the groove behind. The sophisticated funk includes strong elements of jazz and soul as Parker moves from Lionel Hampton and Horace Silver to Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and Shep & the Limelites. Ray Charles' "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" and the traditional "Down by the Riverside" display his flair for gospel melodies. Parker combines thoughtful melodic passages with energetic wails, while the rhythm section, anchored by Larry Goldings' B-3, stays in the proverbial pocket. Mo' Roots was instrumental in introducing a new crop of young fans to instrumental funk. --Marc Greilsamer
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Mo' safe fun. Young sensation Larry Goldings on the Hammond B-3 ups the pleasure quotient. Parker and Kym Mazelle's vocals on Otis Redding's 'Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)" take it back down. Renditions of songs from Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and jazzbos Horace Silver and Lionel Hampton are kindergarten handicraft compared to the originals. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Amazon.com essential recording
On this 1974 recording, Taj Mahal ventures beyond blues and soul to explore the Caribbean side of his heritage. He sings in Spanish on "Why Did You Have to Desert Me?", translates the Anglo folk song "Blackjack Davey" to reggae, and covers the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad") and Bob Marley ("Slave Driver"). His smoked-glass voice evokes a stormy swamp on "Cajun Waltz" and a sunny island on "Clara (St. Kitts Woman)." Rather than mimicking Third World styles, Mahal incorporates them into his own folk and blues-based aesthetic, while humorously nodding back to Otis Redding again on "Big Mama." --Rick Mitchell
Customer Reviews:
Mo'roots by Taj Mahal.......2007-03-28
I first purchased the album in the early 70s in my twenties. I liked it so much I had to buy the cd, in my fifties.
great stuff .......2006-04-09
Yeah I rather love this record although its more the overall mood than that every song is great, but it just flows together so well. this version of slave driver is just fantastic ( and probably better than the original. some of the songs taken in isolation seem weak, why the fadeout on 'johnny too bad'? Some great backing vocals - a short album but such a happy vibe
One of my top ten favorite abums ever!.......2000-07-20
I've got "Dancin the Blues" and "Like Never Before" but I still keep coming back to this album. This album sets me free. I play it constantly and I got it in the seventies. I think Taj is the coolest guy on the planet. Cajun Waltz makes me grab my wife and dance her around the room. His musical sense and timing I can't begin to describe. All the songs are very unique and unlike anything I've ever heard. Give this one a shot. I've never turned anyone on to this album that didn't love it.
A great classic from the 70's.......1998-11-05
I saw Taj twice in the 1970's, what a treat! His music still holds up so well. I'd highly recommend this to any one who enjoys great music done by a naturally gifted musician.

Wow........2005-02-26
This album is RAD! This thing has influenced me in my trombone playing as much as any other jazz, blues, or funk recording. Maceo's legendary team of himself, Pee Wee Ellis, and Fred Wesley groove in this one. All three of them have VERY distinct styles and they blen so well. Chicken really displays the creative talent of these performers at length. Oh yeah, I've got to give the rhythm section some! They ROCK too. Not to mention Kym Mezelle on vocals Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song). This one is a must have for the Funk lover.
Sweet.......2001-09-17
This is a classic. I find it completely mesmerizing. Ii first heard it in a small Blues dj bar in Tokyo. I was like this is the good stuff. It certainly is. 100% worth the price and then some, utmost listening pleasure.
Hard bop jazz not funk.......2000-05-31
Mo' Roots is exactly what the title describes it as being. Mo' Roots is a pure bop jazz album and a brilliant one at that. Unlike other Maceo Parker albums, Maceo sticks to bop jazz and incoporates few elements of funk into this brilliant work. Not to say there is anything wrong with his other albums, however this is to die for. Perfect for intoxicated social gatherings. This is the best album i have heard in ages. Simply brilliant.
I can't say enough about this album!.......1998-08-08
This album is better than Roots Revisted! Maceo Parker along with Pee Wee Ellis et al were the main sound behind James Brown in his prime. This is a highly varied album with some great playing. It is one of my all time favorites. It is a good party album.
