Joe Zawinul, at the age of 70, has brought forth an album that continues to celebrate his endless delight in exploring music from around the world. Born in Vienna, he studied at the conservatory there, moving to the United States in 1958 when he received a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He worked in the '60s with a variety of the era's jazz luminaries (Maynard Ferguson, Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley) before encountering Miles Davis. The trumpet player's In a Silent Way was named for Zawinul's title track. This led to the formation of Weather Report, the band he co-led with Wayne Shorter for 15 years.

Faces & Places mixes vocalists and instrumentalists with daring grace. "Rooftops of Vienna" is a wistful ode that's tinged with the sweetly sad backward glances of a man growing older and finding his boyhood home darting through his dreams. It uses singers as part of the musical stew, rather than as a narrative component. With its blend of exotic acoustic instruments and contemporary electronics, this set is very much in keeping with the direction of Weather Report from the time of Black Market and beyond. --David Greenberger

England's Faces (1970-1975) wound up playing stadiums, but they always had a compact, pub-band feel. They were proud boozers, tuning up wasn't a major obsession, and Rod Stewart (in pre-disco prime) always sounded like he'd sung himself hoarse the night before. They kept the mood light, but ensemble work was deceptively tight, thanks to drummer Kenney Jones (later Keith Moon's replacement in the Who) and guitarist Ron Wood (post-Jeff Beck, pre-Stones), who'd switch between raunchy lead and raunchy rhythm roles between beats. Wood's blues-drenched slide work snuffed most of his rock competition, and helped define the band's wiry sound. But Faces offered more than teapot blues. Tuneful bassist Ronnie Lane's sweet voice and countryish melodies--think "Ooh La La," revived as the movie Rushmore's closing theme--both lightened and deepened the texture. Keyboardist Ian McLagan picked and sequenced 67 tracks, programming them out of chronological order, to flow like concert sets. Included are abundant rarities--out-takes, b-sides, rehearsals, BBC-broadcast excerpts--including live takes of songs Faces recorded under Stewart's name, like "Gasoline Alley" and "Maggie May." From 1969 to 1975 the Faces - Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones - played their loose and joyful blues and soul-inflected rock 'n' roll with reckless abandon, consummate skill, and immeasurable charm. For those few years they were arguably the greatest band on the planet, and their influence has resonated ever since through the music of countless acts, from the Sex Pistols to The Replacements to The Black Crowes, and on and on. After the Faces dissolved in 1975, Stewart went on to solo superstardom, Wood to the Stones, Jones to The Who, McLagan to world - class session work and his own recordings, and Lane to acclaimed solo projects before he succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1997. Greater than the sum of its parts, the Faces made now - immortal music for which there will never, ever be a last call.

I wasn't terribly familiar with the Faces, but a friend got this and I was blown away. Booze and blues. Great stuff. A four discs are fantastic. If you like British blues this is for you.

Only negative is the packaging is the typical nonsense these days. It is a book format with four overlapping CDs. What should come is four jewel cases with a separate book. The book here is epoxied to the binder and weak and anything resembling a digipak sucks and scratches the discs.

Put the discs in jewel cases and enjoy the book.

Always had a soft spot in me heart for Ronnie Lane and the Faces...best show I ever saw matter of fact to this very day...what I remember of it that is...Woody's slippin' and slidin' up against Mac's snortin' B-3 (can't forget his Wurly too) and a singer (what's your name again?) that didn't require a mike...would recommend this box set w/ several thumbs up.

Great CD. Had 1 skipping track but other than that defect the best
collection of Rod and Faces that I've yet to hear together in one package.
Great info too on the band with an included booklet.
Truly the best from Rod's rocking era.
The best thing about these selections is that they are from a member of the band : Ian McLagan, the pianist/organist.
Very little known tracks that made the band's personality come to life are featured. Some rehearsal tracks are not too intriguing. They are rehearsals. By and Large this CD collection is well worth the money for any Faces fan who saw them live in concert in the 70's.

Never think for a moment that THE FACES were not the epitome of sincere & home grown good guys. They were a force in rock that could not be challenged.At 53 yrs now I wish those wonderful days could be known to a musically inept bunch of cretans

Best known for their alumni (Rod Stewart, the Stones' Ron Wood, the Who's Kenny Jones), the Faces' brief early '70s run was as musically rewarding as it was boozy and sideshow spectacular. A revamped, bluesier edition of '60s English pop notables the Small Faces, the Faces established a rollicking musical identity that threatened to overshadow the Stones at their own game. Though the group dissolved under the pressures of Stewart's burgeoning solo career and Wood's recruitment into comfortable career Stonedom, the Faces were about much more than just individual talents. The folksy vulnerability of the late bassist, songwriter, and vocalist Ronnie Lane (well-represented here by "Debris" and "Ooh La La") kept the lads close to roots both geographical and class, while keyboardist Ian McLagen alternated between barrelhouse-boogie and Hammond B-3 soulfulness and Jones loosely locked into irresistible grooves. They could pillage Motown ("Three Button Hand Me Down") and Chuck Berry ("Cindy Incidentally") for riffs, and turn from countrified blues ("Sweet Lady Mary") to the breakneck boogie of "Too Bad" in a heartbeat. They may have been cheated of hits, but the Faces' music remains warm, heartfelt, and enthusiastic--a legacy that's aged much better than the cheap hootch they once drowned themselves in. --Jerry McCulley

I can't even begin to say how bad this compilation is. Just another piece of evidence against any rock and roll post 1971 or 2. If this is what gave Rod Steward "credibility" then he can go to hell. That's my opinion.

Excellent Overview.......2007-03-30

This compilation of the Faces gathers all their great hits and is the best single-disc compilation of theirs that you will find. I think they are a very underrated band, they were very good, they deserved more recognition. Being that I'm a Rod Stewart fan, I think this is just great, even on the songs where he doesn't sing lead. They're a little like the Rolling Stones, but harder-rocking, in my opinion. They were just a good, hard-rock band and definately all about fun. I definately recommend this to anyone who likes Rod Stewart, as well as those that like early hard rock.

The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because I share the same feelings that the band had toward Rod. At this same time he had awesome SOLO albums coming out. Can you imagine the Faces with Rods full creative attention? Oh well, whatever, its still great stuff lots of fun and I can still remember the concerts. Faces were the ultimate live band that would party along with you. Those of you that were fortunate enough to see them live will really appreciate this.

Not enough for the real fans.......2007-03-24

Before you take exception with the three stars I gave this one, please realize that I'm rating the single-disc compilation and not the music. In terms of the songs presented here, we're talking an easy five stars (even the sloppy tracks...that's what made this band great, a mixture of virtuosity and "How can they still be standing when they're that drunk?"). In terms of satisfying anyone other than the most casual or cash-strapped Faces fan, three stars is overly generous. The four-disc "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..." box set is the way to go, not to mention owning each of the 4 Faces CDs and the Wood-era Stewart solo discs. Forget the "Great American Songbook" Rod Stewart you see in 2007. In the 70s, these guys were serious challengers to the throne occupied by the Rolling Stones in terms of songwriting and rocking attitude. That said, "Good Boys" DOES include one of the single greatest songs produced by the band, the late great Ronnie Lane's "Debris" (with powerful backing vocals from Stewart and some of Wood's most poignant playing). The hits are here ("Miss Judy's Farm," "Stay With Me") as well as key album tracks like "Borstal Boys" (their last great, crunchy, stomping Chuck Berry-derived rocker) and the transcendent "Ooh La La." It's just not enough...period. A good intro? Yeah, of course, like "The Beatles Ones" is a good intro to The Beatles. Listen to the BBC live tracks on "Five guys..." and you'll see what you're missing.

THIS IS THE FACES AT THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST........2007-03-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE BEST OF FACES, GOOD BOYS...WHEN THEY'RE ASLEEP..." by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, T-H-E F-A-C-E-S. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1999 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label in association with Warner Brothers Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

The band THE FACES are true legends. THE FACES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for having great band mates that would move on to a either a great solo career or to two of the greatest legendary bands of all time. When lead singer and legendary frontman Rod Stewart met up and joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Kenney Jones, keyboard and piano player Ian "mac" Mclagan, the late great bassist Ronnie Lane and his replacement bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, Rock n' Roll was in for a big surprise and treat. THE FACES would entertain audiences and release some great albums and hit songs from the 1970 to 1975 period. This compilation album highlights all of the hit songs from that period. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF THE FACES" is a true testament of the greatness and genius of a very extremely talented band and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, far ahead of its time.

Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary album begins with the slow smooth Rocker "Flying," the bass screaming acoustic Rocker "Three Button Hand Me Down," the merciless guitar screaming Rocker "Wicked Messenger," the slow beautiful electric acoustic Rocker "Sweet Lady Mary," the FACES trademark Rocker "Bad 'N' Ruin," the soulful Rocker "Had Me A Real Good Time," the slow beautiful Bob Dylan influenced southern Rocker "Debris," the breathtaking screaming Rocker "Miss Judy's Farm," the incredible sounding Rocker "You're So Rude," the fast paced action packed Rocker "Too Bad," the beautiful slow soothing Rocker "Love Lives Here," the forever FACES trademark blistering Rocker "Stay With Me," the groundbreaking Rocker "Cindy Incidentally," the slow beautiful acoustic "Glad And Sorry," the legendary fast paced Rocker "Borstal Boys," the acoustic and mandolin filled slow mellow "Ooh La La," the guitar screechin' and screamin' Rocker "Pool Hall Richard," the soulful and heartful blazing Rocker "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything" and the slow beautiful smooth soothing mellow Rocker "Open To Ideas." May I also add that Ronnie Wood played some mean blistering guitar licks and riffs that would forever revolutionize the sound of the guitar and add more to the legend and legacy of THE FACES. Rod Stewart sang the songs with such ease and breathtaking skills that he sounds the way a true Rock n' Roll frontman is supposed to sound like. Kenney Jones plays drums with such a devastating fury that he joins the legendary power drumming ranks of legendary drummers such as Ginger Baker, the late great Keith Moon and the late great John Bonham.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking out and checking further into especially if you are a newcomer and a curious beginner to the sound and music of THE FACES.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. THE FACES is one collection that a devout music collector would not want to be without.

In closing, after THE FACES disbanded, their legend and legacy was far from ending and being over. Rod Stewart would move on to a very successful solo career which has lasted to this very day. Guitarist Ronnie Wood on the other hand would move on and join THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD, THE ROLLING STONES. Drummer Kenney Jones would also strike gold and move on to replace the late great Keith Moon in the legendary band THE WHO. In 1982, it became public knowledge that Ronnie Lane had developed a probably fatal case of Multiple Sclerosis. At the end of 1983, Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood organised an all-star British Rock revue, Call To A.R.M.S. (Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis), that toured England and the States to raise money for Lane's treatment and research into the disease itself. Besides Clapton, Pete Townshend joined aboard along with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and a host of many others. On a sad note, Rock n' Roll would lose FACES legendary bassist Ronnie Lane to Multiple Sclerosis in June 1997. THE FACES have forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Rod, Ronnie, Kenney, the late great Ronnie L., Ian and Tetsu. Thanks for the memories. Sixties Britpoppers the Small Faces begat the Faces, the reshaped '70s version. Of course, the latter-day incarnation of the band was best known for its lead singer, Rod Stewart, and his unique, squalling voice. The players, meanwhile, displayed Stones-ish sensibilities, which makes sense given that guitarist Ron Wood left the group to join Jagger, Richards, and the boys. Faces didn't release a great number of albums, but during their tumble on the rock charts, they made some truly great songs, several of which are found on this, their consensus classic. "Stay with Me" sounds like a barroom brawl set to music, and "Miss Judy's Farm" puts one in mind of a garage band that lucked out and found a studio and a (somewhat) sober producer. A Nod... is the most representative recording of a band that helped shape hard rock and punk for years to come. --Lorry Fleming

"Debris"...Ronnie Lane snags the best track on this classic........2007-02-26

Ronnie Lane's poignant ode to his dad..."Debris"...is the killer track on this album. Stewart's BEST vocals are the background vocals he provides on this track. That's a pretty bold claim when you're talking about an album that includes "Miss Judy's Farm," "Stay With Me," "Too Bad," "That's All You Need"...but it's a fact. The late, great Ronnie Lane provided a much-needed "McCartney sweetness" counterpoint to Stewart's rooster-haired strutting, and that combination (along with the unstoppable Ronnie Wood) made this band magic. They pulled off one more...the lesser "Ooh La La"...and Ronnie Lane headed south. Free's Tetsu Yamauchi gamely stepped in to fill the void, but with all due respect, he was "just a bass player." After a sloppy live album, Faces faded away and Stewart became a cartoon of his former self. But on THIS album, you have an ample opportunity to understand what the hype was all about.

For One Song.......2006-12-28

For Christmas this was on my wish list for "Stay with Me". I got my wish and had to absolutely laugh and cringe through the rest of this CD. To say "Horrible" would be tooooo kind but that only applies to the lyrics and singing.

However, the redeeming factor for the second star was the actual music. If they had just kept their mouths shut, I probably would have given it a 4.

...what are you reading this for? You know what to expect when you buy a disc produced by Rod Stewart's Faces: at least four or five hard-rocking party numbers ('Miss Judy's Farm', 'Stay With Me', 'Memphis', 'Too Bad', and 'That's All You Need') featuring Rod's raspy vocals, and heavy, pulsing guitar and bass lines courtesy of Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane; two or three irresistible love ballads ('Love Lives Here', 'Debris'); and to top it all off, some honky-tonk or boogie numbers ('You're So Rude', 'Last Orders Please'). 'A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse...', released in November of 1971, charged up to number six on the US album charts, and stands as the most commercially successful of the bands' four albums.

While there isn't always great depth to the lyrics offered up by the three R's... Rod, Ron, and Ronnie, no one can deny that they often cut straight to the chase. On 'Miss Judy's Farm', Rod paints vivid scenario's such as "I was just eighteen and all I needed was to get my way". Ironically, on 'That's All You Need', Stewart sings, "...my kind of music... you knew it wasn't gonna be simple..." when "simple" is exactly the form of music this band revels in. That particular song drifts along on a masterful lead guitar riff that makes it one of the most under-appreciated epic rock tracks. The second side of 'A nod...' (on the original vinyl version) opened with one of the bands' most successful single releases, 'Stay With Me', which climbed to number eight on the national charts in January of 1972. Despite being mercilessly overplayed on both the AM and FM frequencies, 'Stay With Me' has proven powerful enough to overcome overexposure. Stewart's barroom delivery takes lines like "I hear you're a mean old Jezebel" and transforms them into terms of endearment. A honky tonk piano track and grinding rhythm guitar propel the number into a fantastic instrumental coda embracing several faux finishes. 'Too Bad' chimes in with a tale involving a twelve foot tall butler, a colored queen, and sweaty girls over an up-tempo, party-rock beat. Their cover of Chuck Berry's 'Memphis' plods along in the beginning, but confidently gains intensity as Rod tells the familiar tale about a phone call from southside Memphis Marie, all of six years old.

Among the better ballads are 'Love Lives Here', offering a melodic combination of guitars, piano, and organ, and Ronnie Lane's 'Debris', supported by more solid guitar and piano interaction. While less entertaining than the surrounding fare, 'You're So Rude' blends a rocking rhythm guitar riff with a tight electric lead guitar, and tops it off with a harmonica in the coda. Perhpas the weakest track among the nine performed is the side one closer, 'Last Orders Please', a break-up tale dropping some worn cliche's such as "you've got yours and I've got mine".

I was a senior in high school the year that 'A nod...' hit the shelves, and the disc proved to be one of the first to hit the platter at each and every party that brought closure to that most important of all years. Whenever I see that cover (which always made me think of this as a live disc, which it isn't), surrounded by that distinct dark brown border, waves of memories and emotions from my youth surround me. For that reason, my own perception of the quality of this disc may be biased, but with each subsequent listen I feel vindicated that it isn't just my associations to it that make 'A nod...' a rock and roll classic. As many good times as this album must have witnessed in the early 1970's, it remains vital enough to produce many more to come.

Back in the late 70's I had the vinyl and this was one of my favorite albums. The CD version sounds just as good if not better. The music is still very fresh, classic rock & roll. Great rock singing and guitar work. This has to be one of Rod Stewart's best material. I think he was at his best with the Faces or maybe he was just younger, drank more Scotch and really believed in what he was singing. The later material just has not been convincing with lot of commercialism. I am curious to listen to the Gold Disc version from Audio Fidelity.

The Faces' best record.......2005-03-27

"A Nod Is As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse" is the Faces' third album in just two years, and it is their most consistent record alongside 1973's "Ooh La La".

Filled with crunchy electric guitars, blooze-n-boogie piano, and deep, bluesy grooves, it boasts the group's only significant hit, the superb, fiery rocker "Stay With Me". But there are numerous other highlights, including the strutting "Miss Judy's Farm", a rollicking cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis", and the piano-driven hard rock of "Too Bad"...everything is worth a listen, actually.
"A Nod Is As Good As A Wink..." rocks like very few other records of the early seventies, and this fine record proves what a great, underrated rock n' roll outfit the Faces were.

This isn't just great Christian rock. It's great rock, period........2007-05-19

Kutless is easily my favorite band and this CD is a big reason for me. Anybody that says Christian bands have no talent has obviously never heard Kutless.

I can honestly say there isn't a single song on this CD that I don't like. The CD starts with "Not What You See", a very profound song about how we as Christians are nothing more than servants to God and the world around us.

Next is "All Alone", an marvelously produced song about Jesus being our only hope. "Better For You" is another very profound song about how the right thing always seems hard, but in the end it is better for us.

"Sea of Faces" is one of the songs that made Kutless, and you can see why. It has a great melody, great words, and great over all sound. "Let You In" is probably the hardest song on the album, and it features singing by Demon Hunter's lead singer.

"Passion" captures the pain and anguish of Jesus' death in a very powerful way. It mentions how Jesus' death, although it was terrible, is comforting to all of us.

"Perspectives" would make a great mainstream song. It simply states that we need to view the world around us in a way that realizes we are not the only ones with problems. After "Perspectives" is "Treason", another remarkably deep song about how we don't act like we're really Christians, and commit treason against God.

"All the Words" is simply a beautiful praise-and-worship song. "Troubled Heart" is probably my least favorite on the album, but even it is a good song. The final song, "It's Like Me", talks about the difficult of witnessing, and has one of the best lines in all of music - "Would my care increase if I truly believe that a life could be saved?"

To sum it up, if you want great rock music with a great message, don't pass up Kutless's Sea of Faces.

Steve Marriott was only 18 when the debut album was issued and still only 23 when he formed Humble Pie. It's a tragedy that the Small Faces never received the recognition they deserved when Steve and Ronnie were still around. (But, is that a reference to them in Eight Miles High?)

Brilliant sixties rock group.......2005-02-16

The Small Faces were one of the most distinctive groups of the sixties and have continued to be a major influence on rock music down the years. The founder members were Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones and Jimmy Winston. Jimmy didn't last long and was replaced by Ian McLagan after their debut single, Whatcha gonna do about it, made the UK top twenty. With the new line-up, the Small Faces had several major UK hits.

Sha la la la lee, Hey girl, All or nothing and My mind's eye were all huge UK hits, with All or nothing going all the way to number one. After a minor hit with I can't help it, they left Decca and signed for the Immediate label.

They just missed the UK top ten with Here come the nice. Itchycoo Park made the UK top three and the American top five (it was their only American hit). Tin Soldier made the UK top ten. Lazy Sunday, a brilliant summer song, was a UK number two hit. The universal made the UK top twenty in 1968, after which the group disbanded. Afterglow of your love became a minor UK hit in 1969. Re-issues of Itchycoo Park (a top ten hit in 1975) and Lazy Sunday (a minor hit in 1976) complete their chart history, unless there are further successful re-issues.

After the group disbanded, Steve Marriot, the lad singer, formed Humble Pie (best known for their UK top five hit, Natural born boogie) while the other three formed the Faces with another musician, Ronnie Wood, and a new lead singer, Rod Stewart.

The music of Humble Pie and the Faces is outside the scope of this compilation, which provides a comprehensive study of the Small Faces' music from both Decca and Immediate labels, including all their UK hits and many great album tracks. Note that most hits compilations tend to have either the Decca tracks or the Immediate tracks. If you buy this, you may never need another Small Faces collection, although even this one does not contain everything.

Best sound & best comp.......2005-02-02

This 2003 compilation (covering both the Decca and Immediate eras)has the best mastering of any SF title in print. The 1999 "Darlings" set has plenty of nice rareties not included here, but the sound of this set beats that one hands down. The entire debut album is on the first disc - and unlike the Deram remaster from '97 - the material explodes from your speakers like the early Who at their best. The Decca material is raw, soulful, maximimum r & b/rock and roll, with hints of the introspection and psychedelia to come. The Immediate material is simply breathtaking in its scope and variety.And those(Immediate) tracks on disc two are - unlike Fuel 2000's thin sounding transfers - full-bodied, with plenty of beautifully defined bass and drums from one of the most subtle rhythm sections in rock, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones. I suggest to any SF newbie, buy this collection and listen close, dance, laugh, cry - then pick up the rest of this classic band's catalog, for they were as great in their day (1965 - 69) as Faces (SF minus Steve Marriott, replaced by Ron Wood and Rod Stewart) would be in theirs (1969 - 75). Together, two of the very best rock and roll bands during a very critical and constantly evolving decade.

EWF rocks!!.......2007-05-25

One of my favorite EWF works of all time - perhaps one of their most under rated albums ever! Love it!!

Let me talk and say that this album(cd) is by far my favorite of all time. I was 12 when it came out. My dad was a musician and loved EWF. He took me to see them in 1978 and at 10 I was blown away by the music and the style. Then this came out. I still have my dad's album version, have bought the cd(an import only at the time) and just bought it on itunes, which FINALLY put it up, YES!!
I think everybody has that person that they know they would just be speechless to meet. I work in the radio industry and have met a lot of people too big to mention. Maurice White is my absolute hero. I don't know how I would react to meeting him. It's tragic what he is going thru physically, and I only wish the best for him.
To this album...the last 26 years has afforded the ability to have a different favorite at one time or another. And Love Goes On was the first fav, then You, cuz it applied to me at the time, then You Went Away, for the same reason(same girl, lol).
But right now, it's easily the title track. God, when I wanna take in a real percussive/brass jam, you can't do much better!
I think for the reasons previously stated, the album didn't do well. That shouldn't and doesn't take away the absolute need for someone to have Faces. If you just like EWF or just like music, GET THIS!!

The "forgotten" album/cd!.......2007-03-14

This is the best EWF CD ever! Uptempo, peppy, the BEST horn licks (song, Let me Talk!) and Maurice and Phillip working it out on vocals!! This was a double album that had no charting songs or hits but wow was it the best listening experience. Did radio miss this one? In their live show none of these songs were ever performed....wonder why? Disco was dying when this was released maybe no chances were taken to explore it. First song to the last....LOVE IT! The best band ever, a cut above the rest. Even though Maurice doesn't tour with them today, he is missed.....sorry Phil can't handle all the material and the group has dwindled. Favorites: "In Time" "Back on the Road" "Turn it into Something Good" "Song in my Heart".
A must have for any EWF fan!

The is a classic EW&F CD. I'm not sure it sold well in it's day.
I originally purchased the cassette,it had so much music on it that it would get stuck. get this!

Chessman " Long Overdue ".......2006-07-24

Whoooooo!!!!! Dit it take the world 25 years to bow and pay homage to the creativity which conjured this masterpiece. I was only 11 years old when this album was released. My Older brother and I used to clean the house, do homework, or just chill to this alblum. We would listen to the radio and wait for DJays to play music from this album. The music industry did not properly acknowledge this album. This is Grammy worthy material. I'm grateful that Maurice and the boys did not allow this intentional oversight from the industry to derail their creative juices. If you have not experience Faces, you must get it. An Earth, Wind & Fire loyalist from the South side of Chicago....

As with jazz-oriented departure Duper Sessions, Phantom Punch is a group effort. Sure, Norway's favorite son is still at the center of the action, but his fourth is billed as Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down. In other words, this isn't a singer/songwriter affair, but rather Lerche (vocals, guitar), Ole Ludvig Krüger (drums), Morten Skage (bass, percussion), and Kato Ådland (guitar, keyboards) on power-pop pills. (Inara George from the Bird and the Bee contributes backing vocals.) While the album isn't a complete change of pace, it does represent a shift into slightly harder-edged territory. Like shoes that haven't been broken in yet, the results are mostly successful (they look sharp, but pinch a bit). Lerche has never denied a debt to tour mate Elvis Costello, but now he's sounding a little like Costello's pals in Squeeze, surely one of the most tuneful acts to emerge from the new wave era. If Phantom Punch has a flaw, it's that Lerche's hooks aren't as pointed as they could be, a problem with his work since auspicious debut Faces Down. Granted, it isn't a major matter, and beautifully sung numbers like "Say It All" and "John, Let Me Go" are among his best. But he hasn't yet drafted a ditty as memorable as, say, "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)," and there's no doubt he's got the talent to do it. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Wow, I guess I'm the loner here..........2007-07-02

...but I hate this CD! I love Sondre's first two CDs because the words and the instrumentation were so unusual and interesting. I do enjoy the Sessions Jazz CD, so it's not like I hate change and experimentation. But I think I'm disappointed because the change in sound is SO drastic that it sounds nothing like him. Instead it sounds like something any guitar-driven band could do.

I wish someone would have warned me (more bluntly I guess) that just because I liked his previous work does not mean I'll like this one.

Everything Sondre.......2007-06-27

Being a musician, a DJ, and a music critic, I've had a chance to hear Sondre's previous work. He went from pure singer-songwriter, to jazz musician, to now rocker. This record, "Phantom Punch", seems to combine all of these elements into one. At times, he even seems to go back to an earlier time of catchy guitar riffs and a definite connection between musicians. I'm sure we have that now, but listen to "John Let Me Go" and you'll hear exactly what I mean. For a more stripped back feel, reminiscent of Sondre's first CD years ago, check out "Tragic Mirror". The first song I heard from this record was his single "Phantom Punch", which still stands out in my mind as perfection.

If you have ever been a fan of Sondre Lerche, buy this album. If you have never heard him, listen, and then buy this album.

Sondre All Grown Up.......2007-03-10

Sondre Lerche's fourth LP release is a refreshing departure from his earlier work: it's more frenetic and upbeat, experimenting with Latin American-flavored twists and yet still maintaining a definitively "indie rock" label, more so than the sweet-sounding pop melodies of Two Way Monologue and Faces Down (and obviously more so than the jazzy Duper Sessions). There is a revitalizing energy to Phantom Punch that assures the listener that Sondre refuses to box himself into any one category, always experimenting with different types of music without losing that distinctive and wholly original appeal.

"Airport Taxi Reception," "The Tape," "Phantom Punch," and "Face the Blood" are the songs that will get fans tapping their feet and heads along with some truly ear-catching hooks and Franz Ferdinand-inspired riffs. "Say It All," "Tragic Mirror," "Well Well Well," and "After All" are more representative of classic Sondre, and yet there is an air of maturity there that has replaced the sweet but naively innocent impression of earlier albums.

Hardcore fans will recognize the third incarnation of former B-Side "John, Let Me Go" that has cropped up on several EPs over the years in both acoustic and electric form. This time, it's even more pumped up, with a longer, more energized bridge that incorporates some great harmonica work.

Suffice to say, if you're a Sondre fan, you will adore this album as always. If you're new to Sondre, this album is far more mainstream-geared than any prior album and is an excellent introduction into the the ouvre of this phenomenally talented singer and songwriter.

Phantom Punch.......2007-02-21

Sondre's fourth album "Phantom Punch" is just that: punchy. It's way more upbeat and frenetic and LOUD than his previous work. It's especially LOUDER than the superb Duper Sessions, which I absolutely loved.

His softer singer/songwriter style that was on display in his first two albums still shines through on a few tracks. Thankfully, his very distinct voice is there throughout.

But, be warned, this is a bit of a departure from his previous efforts. That said, it's still way better than 90% of the other CD's you could be buying. I'm not a fan of the louder Sondre, but it grows on me with each repeat listening. He's still a superb, relatively unknown, artist.

Sondre Lerche really rocks out on this album!!.......2007-02-20

All I have to say is that this album was amazing. Completley different from anything he has done in his past albums. Loved the title song out of all. If you want to hear another side of Sondre then this is it!!!

Paul Westerberg often cited the Faces as a major influence on the Replacements, and it's easy to see how careening barroom rockers like this 1973 album's "Borstal Boys" made a dent in the aesthetic that produced "I.O.U." and "Takin a Ride." More than anything, though, Westerberg was affected by the late Ronnie Lane's closed-door weepers ("Flags and Banners" and dejected apologias ("Glad and Sorry"). Rod Stewart also essays a sensitive moment or two, notably on the single "Cindy Incidentally," which nearly equals "You Wear It Well" as a masterpiece of the heartfelt affection he once commanded so effortlessly. --Rickey Wright

4.5 stars for the Faces' swan song .......2007-01-24

Actually, the song "Ooh La La" is sung by Ronnie Wood, not Ronnie Lane, as stated in the review below. Wood did share vocals with Lane on "Glad and Sorry." Although "Ooh La La" is a Lane song -- Lane first tried singing it, and then Stewart tried, but they fought over which key to perform the song in -- that's when Wood stepped in and sang it, and it's the best Ron Wood vocal ever, hands-down.
A 4.5 star record from one of the greatest bands of all time. The title track alone is worth the 10-dollar asking price. It's possibly the Faces' greatest studio cut, even greater than the popular "Stay With Me," although "Stay With Me" has a better bass line. Had the Faces stayed together - Lane quit soon after this 1973 LP came out - they would have suprassed the good Rolling Stones. The Faces had three great writers in Lane, Wood and Stewart, and Jones and McLagan also were good at composing, whereas the Stones only utilized two writers most of the time.

Enjoy! The "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" box set is worth it, if you want to get more than one Faces disc and see what this terrific band was like ....

Not their best, but...........2006-07-16

When I got this cd in the late 90s I had read only negative comments about it and am glad to say the album is better than I had been led to believe. Recorded when the relationships among Rod and the rest of the lads were kind of strained due to the former's fading interest in being with the group, the material is better than you could actually expect.

To me, the only weak song is My Fault.Silicone Grown has nonsense lyrics but fortunately the musical part wins over. Cindy Incidentally is a brief (as all of them) yet cool song, Flags and Banners is a Ronnie Lane song and Borstal Boys makes you wanna get up and rock. In fact, my favourite rocker on the cd.

Fly On The Ointment is very good indeed. An instrumental most people choose to ignore but that it's very good. Its title may hint at the unrest inside the group. The following three songs are clearly Lane's stuff despite the credits. It actually surprises he wouldn't song all of them if he'd written them. Ooh la la is awesome, a stylistic departure for the band that fits in perfectly. Woody does a good job of singing it. Ronnie Lane might have sang it too but for some reason passed on it.

To sum up, not their best album but not a throwaway either. It's a shame that the once great Rod Stewart has fallen so low ever since. What a waste of talent.

By far this & Nod and just the perfect match so they =one brilliant 2 LP set for me

The first Faces LP sit covers and protected for those days I just need to Look at it and remember when music was FUN
No I can not take out my first LP with the moving faces it is to priceless in my heart
a Brill LP in a category on its own -"Three Button" is Rod discovering his VOICE and how well it fit with softer rock

No question GET this CD better still if you are new the romance of the Faces get "Five guys walk into" and discover gems and more

This is the Faces' tightest album, filled with rough, tough three-minute rock n' roll songs. The arrangements are the best you'll find on any Faces record, and the songs are more varied than usual in mood and tempo, spanning ballads, hard rock, piano-driven boogie rock, and acoustic folk-rock.

Ian McLagan plays wonderful boogie piano on the swaggering rockers "My Fault" and "Borstal Boys", and Ron Wood's muscular guitar playing on the mid-tempo groove of the classic "Cindy Incidentally" and the good-time barroom boogie of "Silicone Grown" is some of his best and most focused playing on record.
And even the lesser-known songs are excellent, like the superbly melodic "Just Another Honky" and the acoustic title track.

This collection of songs is the best you'll find on any Faces album (well, alongside "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink..."), and "Ooh La La" is a must-have for Faces fans, hardcore and casual alike.

A train wreck of an album.......2005-05-03

As a kid The Faces were my favourite group, that is until they released this train wreck of an album. At the time the band was imploding, wih Rod preparing to persue his solo career exclusively and Lane (God love him) preparing to quit the group.I can't believe people here gave it such high marks. The best thing about this album was that it was mercifully short at just under 30 minutes.The next best thing was the trick cover. Actually the one thing I like about it was Ronnie lane's too brief efforts, especially the title track, which unfortunately is sung by Ron Wood and not by Lane. The group's heart just wasn't in the album, and Stewart at the time complained that they couldn't play a lot of this material live without stuffing up the songs. At their best an enjoyable group, this was their low point, and they were never able to recover. Save your hard earned. It's pretty 'orrible, unfortunately.

A Classic!.......2007-05-12

This album (CD)is a classic product of the period between 1969-70 and this
man has a voice to knock your socks off. But he doesn't sing of typical
song subjects- he inspires you to think about the core meaning of life and love. He has a three-and-half octave range and the ability to use his
breath to sing in a way no one else in rock can. And this album rocks, too! I've been waiting years for it to be released on cd and now I'm enjoying it like never before. You have to hear it and all of his others, especially the earlier albums.

POSITIVELY WITHOUT PEER!!!!!.......2007-03-09

I have waited a very long time for this - my very favorite Shawn Philips album - to see the light of day in digital format. I was not disappointed. The mastering is without equal, the sound actually as "warm" as it was on vinyl. The acid test of this is the incredible instrumental track, entitled CHORALE. In a word: WOW!

I won't bore you with minutiae about how every song on this album is spectacular, but they are!

Suffice to say that - put to the old "what 10 CDs would you bring with you if you were deserted on a desert island?" test - Shawn Phillips FACES album is at or very near the top of the list.

after all these years, still a masterpiece.......2007-01-28

having recently started replacing LP's dating back to 1968 (300 give or take dozen or so)taken in a home invasion, i just received "faces". what a treat !! the musicianship is superb, shawn's soaring vocals are a delight. it awes me that this is over 30 years old and still so enjoyable.
shawn is a musical genius, when i bought this decades ago i knew i liked it but at that time was not truly appreciating the layers of instruments, it's like a truly fine wine. also appreciated is shawn's willingness to not limit his music to one form. before purchasing this, i acquired his greatets hits and found myself enjoying all of the tunes and the variety of music types it represents. i would heartily recommend any of his works to anyone who can appreciate layers and layers of instruments and an astounding vocal range. i saw shawn in concert in the early 70's and plan to repeat the experience as soon as he starts touring north amemrica again.

Unfortunately I was disappointed in this CD as I did not remember that there were practically no lyrics to any of the music that was played throughout the movie.

This soundtrack contains lovely themes by Marvin Hamlisch and Barbra Streisand and it is very lush, as expected. Barbra needed to record only two songs for this release, but they are so good they are enough. Her hit duet with Bryan Adams is a great love ballad and the other song ''All Of My Life'' has similar music with a different lyric by Alan & Marilyn Bergman (not a surprising phenomenon). The music score is very sentimental, but because of the fact that it's a little repetitive, it would come to be boring, if there wasn't the Richard Marx recording somewhere between. It also has a theme from David Sanborn and the closing of Luciano Pavarotti's classic ''Nessun Dorma''. For those who adore Barbra Streisand or music scores or both, highly recommended.

Beautiful Score.......2005-11-18

The Mirror has Two Faces is one of my favorite movies (within the top 10-15) and I found myself watching it for the zillionth time, and I was humming along with the score, bobbing my head, etc. I realized how intricately the music is woven into the fabric of the film. I decided to buy the sountrack, and I love it. It's the perfect studying music, relaxing music, romantic music. Upon playing the songs, I could see the corresponding scenes in my head. That's how well the songs mirror (no pun intended) the action in the film.

I give the sountrack 4 stars just because some of the songs are quite short. I was looking forward to the full version of Nessun Dorma but was disappointed about that (so I still have to purchase Pavorotti). But that's no big deal.

If you enjoyed the score in the film, you'll enjoy this CD.

Fraudulent.......2004-11-03

Imagine buying this CD after seeing "The Mirror has Two Faces" fully expecting the SOUNDTRACK music to the movie, and reading overall great reviews on Amazon. Imagine the shock of receiving the CD and the surprise of hearing 20 brief cuts of plain instrumental music out of the 24 cuts - The remaining 4 cuts contained very short lines of verse. Perhaps Barbara, with her tremendous unlimited wealth, felt she would be giving away a "free album" to the masses if the soundtrack contained the vocals in the film. Shameless misrepresentation.

A wonderful relaxing albumn.......2004-02-03

I first saw this picture and then got the CD. I think the music is magical. The music is soothing, relaxing and very romantic. I have hundreds of CDs, but this one is exceptional. I also thought the picture was cute. This CD is really more a musical soundtrack rather than a vocal soundtrack.
