Branford Marsalis's aptly titled Contemporary Jazz is a survey of jazz happening as the 21st century rounds the bend of its first year. The mostly bop and postbop music is certainly rooted in jazz's known traditions, but Marsalis's quartet isn't burdened by the past (as the raucous cover of "Cheek to Cheek" attests). Marsalis starts the album with the accessible but shifty "In the Crease" and moves from there to the elegiac "Requiem," which smolders with dark fire. Things really take off at the album's centerpiece, "Elysium." Here, the band--pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts--test their mettle as they break free and stretch out, turning rhythms and melodies inside out over the song's 16 minutes. Perhaps the most interesting of the tracks is Tain's "Countronious Rex," where the quartet seamlessly shifts between gospel, blues, and jazz with offhand grace. Giving a fine overview of jazz and its many forms, Marsalis and company succeed in creating a vivid musical compendium. And they do it with a flair that, like Marsalis's playing, is searching and articulate. --Tad Hendrickson

From Jazziz
For the past few years Branford Marsalis has been telling anyone who will listen that he's not exactly proud of some of the music he put out in the 1980s and early '90s. It was learning time, he says. The recordings were less his heart and soul and more a chronicle of practice-room exploits. The music simply wasn't all his. He talks about the years spent walking in the recorded footsteps of the masters, says he knows now that it takes time (decades even) to get past the imitative phase of jazz discourse, blames in part those who marketed him and other youngsters as fully-formed artists. Even then, he knew that regardless of the attire, there are no shortcuts on the path to mastery.

It's an unusual apologia in this age of carefully calibrated image - the cynical might even read it as another deft spin of marketing. Which it well could be if there wasn't so much evidence, in 1999's Requiem and this boldly titled followup, of Branford Marsalis' maturity. Something profound is going on in his thinking; it's as though he's broken through the conceptual and technical walls that once confined him to discover, quite unexpectedly, a realm of sensual riches that offer all kinds of ways to nourish the spirit. Contemporary Jazz is an account of a 39-year-old's transition from head to heart, from deliberate learning to more innate trusting of reflexes. Its brainy moments (like the demanding odd-meter form of "In the Crease") are never just exercises: Through them, Marsalis and his accomplished trio - drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis - balance precise carving work against headstrong flying leaps, ferocious arguments against gorgeous ornamentations.

For this band, history is an asset, not an albatross. Compare the version of "Cheek to Cheek" with any recent treatment of any standard from any artist of Marsalis' generation. Listen to the abrupt stops and the unified lunges, the way Marsalis wrestles with the slap-tonguing aura of Sonny Rollins and the intervallic mischief of Don Byas, the moments when the time gets snarled and then springs magically back into place. What you hear isn't homework - it's something vital and irreverent, something that happens only when you move away from the microscope.

Marsalis is playing for keeps now, with a newly refined, rail-straight tone and an immediacy he's brought to many recent live performances but hadn't successfully captured in the studio. He exhausts the challenges of his structures rather than simply outlining them, and yet never gets so deep into the math that he loses the rhythms of daily life: his "Requiem" is a gorgeous, yearning meditation played out in spellbinding rubato; his "Countronious Rex" melds sullen blues with happy-feet gospel with hinky little red-herring phrases that throw things out of whack. And after he's said his piece, along comes Calderazzo, doing bebop contortions for a few choice bars, framing the collective bursts of "Tain Mutiny" in solid block chords and primary colors that build on Marsalis' moves while sending the music into completely different directions.

There are political statements embedded in everything these days - in the distinctions between "contemporary jazz" and the other kind, in the development and assertion of individual identity. No one of his generation has had to grapple with these things quite the way Branford Marsalis has - his definition of contemporary jazz, full of impish irreverence and driven by unique personal presence, offers a contrast to the outlook of fastidious scholars that prevails elsewhere. Having been in the eye of a media storm, having survived to find his own voice because of (or, more likely, in spite of) his early musical environments, Branford suggests that more than doctrine and academic mealymouthing is necessary for further evolution. He's copping some old attitude and hitting some new notes, and his attempts to bridge the storied past and the compromised future are beginning to look like a heroic quest: Can material this fluid and fiery exist next to the stodgy, note-by-note jazz recreations and equally unimaginative instrumental pop? Can it find a home in a marketplace more interested in pleasantries than provocation? Contemporary Jazz is one attempt to grapple with these questions, and if, by some chance, his ideals are not readily apparant in the music, Marsalis reinforces them with the cover: Its faded, paint-peeling image is of a woman with cigarette dangling from full red lips. The eyes are long gone but her spirit endures, an iconographic reminder of a time when music, even the most technically demanding kind, was driven by the pursuit of pleasure.

It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Michael Bublé does it again.......2007-07-09

Even my mother-in-law likes it! And, not going for the 14th selection makes it a very reasonable purchase/gift.

4 out of 5 stars Great Gems.......2007-07-04

Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" is a fine set with some real jewels. He obviously idolizes Frank Sinatra & shines on "That's Life" with a punchy arrangement, "I've been up & down & over & out & I know one thing, each time I find myself flat on my face I pick myself up & get back in the race." Of my very two favorites are the opener "The Best Is Yet to Come" with its cheerful anticipation, "Wait till the warm-ups are underway, wait till our lips have met, wait till you see that sunshine day, you ain't seen nothing yet!" "Me & Mrs. Jones" is a tale of an affair and was a startling Gamble & Huff soul track for Billy Paul. Buble milks the jazz out of the track, while sounding quite soulful. Harold Arlen is one of my favorite songwriters; so like other reviewers, I question the lisp on "I've Got the World on a String." It's probably supposed to be funny, but it sounds like he's making fun of the song. Joel Peskin's sax on the track blows deliciously. This set has some great gems. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A good album.........2007-07-03

I like it, I really do. I don't love it like I loved It's Time, but I like it. I know I'm being a bit redudant, but such is life. There were a few songs that in my opinion could've been produced or arranged a little better, but overall it's pretty good. I'm a great fan of Mr. Buble so he's one of the few artist that I'll buy a cd just because he's on it, and especially any cd that he puts out because it's sure to have good music on it. So once again I don't love, but I definitely like it..

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-07-03

Why he waits so long between albums is beyond me. I love love love this one! Way better than the last. He's the new classic!!

5 out of 5 stars As Always... Perfection!.......2007-06-29

I love this man! Michael is truly one the best singers of my generation.
Without a doubt...

For me the stand out tracks would have to be: "Me And Mrs. Jones", "Lost" and "I'm Your Man". Brilliant!

I have had the pleasure of meeting Michael more then once and he is a wonderful person! Go and see Michael's live show, it's one of the best!

Although the music of Norah Jones continues to blend pop, soul, folk, and country with a seasoning of jazz, her third album for Blue Note is the first where she's written (or collaborated on) all the material. Beneath the smooth surface lie darker strains on the album-opening "Wish I Could" (about a boyfriend lost to war), intimations of mortality in "The Sun Doesn't Like You," and the post-election horrors of "My Dear Country." The last seems to channel the inspiration of Brecht/Weill, while the equally bleak "Sinkin' Soon" is set to a jaunty Dixieland rag. Throughout, Jones's vocal intimacy and melodic warmth remain as disarmingly understated as ever. The soulful "Thinking of You," the countryish "Wake Me Up," and the syncopated "Be My Somebody" reflect the captivating style of her previous work. Although too much in the same midtempo mode becomes a dreamy lull, cut by cut, Jones's voice is irresistible. --Don McLeese

That's about the highest praise I can muster for this effort. It isn't that it's BAD, but it just never achieves "lift off."

I wish I could wax enthusiastic, but after quite a few listens at this point, I don't think my opinion is likely to change appreciably.

Time for Ms. Jones to find her passion. It isn't evident on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2007-07-07

I have all her cds. This one is new, different and good. I like all the tracks, Be my somebody tonight got me a speeding ticket. I saw her in concert and she puts on a helluva show. Worth every penny.

Unfortunately, this CD is much below all what one could expect from Norah Jones. Except the cover, nothing is worth remembering.

There are only a couple of songs on this collection that I enjoy. "Come Away With Me" is a better collection.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend Continues..........2007-07-04

This 'Best Of' is a must for any Vanatic (Van fan)... but more importantly it is a must for anyone who thinks Van's career ended in the 1970s... all the tracks on "Vol. 3" are from 1993-2005 - Van's later writing and singing are well represented on this compilation and with a superb supporting cast of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Bobby "Blue" Bland and the great Georgie Fame as they come along for the journey...

Van is still a mighty force in a world that needs more soul and less pop.

5 out of 5 stars Rock the gypsy in your soul.......2007-07-03

An amazing compilation of Van Morrison's enchanting and haunting melodies. Although I am not a big jazz or blues fan, he has managed to put those two elements together in a way that is a lyrical treat. The melodies are addictive and very catchy. As he has matured, his renditions of some of his earlier works are performed now with more conviction, passion, and confidence than ever before. Van is an extremely talented musician and lyricist that successfully impacts music for the ages. I could listen to Van Morrison 24/7.

Van is his element, you won't hear this almost 9 min track on

I have quite a few of the tracks on other albums over 60% but
didn't hesitate on this purchase.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27

This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.

5 out of 5 stars Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

4 out of 5 stars I'd Love To...........2007-06-05

Okay, she's not quite a standards specialist, but a lot of people think Norah Jones is well on her way to setting some new standards of her own.

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.

Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.

The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Good for my ears........2007-06-02

I see some reviews calling her Snorah Jones, and others which debate whether what she sings is truly jazz. Who cares! If it tastes good I eat it: if it sounds good I listen to it. This girl possesses a unique and expressive vocal instrument. It sounds good to me, facilitative for relaxing in a comfortable chair with a martini or cabernet after a hard day's work. If I were three or four decades younger, it would be perfect make out music.

Michael Bublé's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with -- apt tribute to Bublé hero Bobby Darin -- that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers Bublé a welcome swinging jazz showcase on "The More I See of You," a bracing respite from the rest of producer David Foster's slick, if typically bloodless MOR production. -- Jerry McCulley [Note: A special edition including two bonus tracks--"Dream a Little Dream" and "Mack the Knife"--is also available.]

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2007-07-05

This is a great CD - if you like Michael Buble's current CD (Call Me Irresponsible) you will like this one as well. This album has more slow songs on it than the current album, but still sexy and fun.

3 out of 5 stars He just can't do the blues....only slightly convincing.......2007-07-02

I like Mike. He's a talented guy, but this, and the Call Me Irresponsible CD are just ok. He makes a few attempts in areas where he is not proficient, doesn't have the training, or the voice, but makes a decent go of it. However, the end result simply isn't convincing. He should stick with covers as he did in his opener, and even then, try not to make them his own by changing the musical accompaniment vastly. Good Jazz/Crooner, stick with it! Don't let the producers get in your way.

Love love love Michael Buble.. this is another great one. I think he is just wonderful. I listen to him all the time, albeit in the car or on the computer with headphones. His band is wonderful. He is such a success and getting better with every CD. What a delight to have this kind of talent.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I was in Paris..............2007-06-02

This is a really classy album of hits. I love the smooth mellowness of Michael's voice. He has a way of making every song he sings sound perfect. If you have been waiting for a classy singer and performer, wait no longer. Buy this album and sit back for awhile. I guarantee it will relax you and put you in a good mood. You'll have a smile on your face!!

It's been nearly a decade since Loreena McKennitt's last studio album, The Book of Secrets, but An Ancient Muse picks up the caravan exactly where she left off on her mystical journey through the cultures of the Middle East and northern Sahara. The Canadian singer opens this album the same way as she did her last two recordings: with an incantation, calling out in a wordless voice across an echoing space, cleansing the air and the mind. What follows is a lot like those albums as well, a pan-global excursion centered on Middle Eastern themes and instruments cast into a dramatic exotica. Oud, dumbek, kanoun, hurdy-gurdy, duduk, nyckleharpe (a Swedish-keyed fiddle), and other ancient sounds from the region and beyond ornament her music, though "ornament" might no longer be accurate. With the exception of Hugh Marsh's gypsy violin solos and a handful of other players, it's the Western instruments that serve as ornaments on An Ancient Muse. McKennitt long ago evolved the Celtic sound that launched her career. She's virtually abandoned the harp, which hasn't appeared on her CDs since 1991's The Visit. The lone uillean pipe on "Beneath a Phrygian Sky" sounds like an echo calling from the McKennitt's past. Nevertheless, the Celtic ballad form remains central to her music, and she still draws inspiration from ye olde writers of the British Isles. Lyrics from Sir Walter Scott adorn "The English Ladye and the Knight," recalling "The Lady of Shalott." But despite McKennitt's soaring alto, the tale drags under the dirge-like meter and ponderous arrangement. The epic track of this album is the aforementioned "Beneath a Phrygian Sky," with distorted electric guitar accents and an acoustic guitar melody carrying McKennitt on another journey into her romanticized version of the ancient world. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-06

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnetts Previous works. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

A wonderful new album from Loreena. If you like her previous recordings, you will not be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic Tapestry.......2007-07-03

One might call me a musicholic. Okay, I am a musicholic! I'm always searching for the ultimate unique musical experience and McKennitt's "Ancient Muse" delivers on the highest level. If you enjoy ballroom dancing try "Kecharitomene"; it is a beautiful Bolero. If you just enjoy listening then you will be swept away by this mystic tapestry. The musicianship on the album is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Music can bridge east and west.......2007-07-02

Ever since I got this CD as a gift from my father inlaw I got somehow addicted to it. It is a perfect east-west blend in during a time when all we see is political-cultural rift between the two.

Much of the melodies are inspired by the region. One is actually a fully adapted turkish theme that my grandmother used to play in her lute, very well known under different names in the middle east (Iraq and Syria it is Mughram wisalak), that is Sacred Shabbat. Other melodies blend in Celtic, and new age with Oriental Instruments in such a magnificient way.

Good for you Loreena and I cannot wait to hear your Night in Al Hambra album. Cannot wait to see you live in Concert here in Dubai.

Actually since I heared this CD I became an avid fan of Loreena that I got all her CDs, but the impression that "An Ancient Muse" is still unique among the others.

5 out of 5 stars Noone is like Loreena!!.......2007-06-27

As a fan of Loreen's since The Visit, I have enjoyed her journey into her Celtic Roots and exploration of World Music. An Ancient Muse does not disappoint. From the beginning chords of Incantation through the Haunting chords of the Never Ending Road, I feel like I tagged along with Loreena on her journey through self discovery and her beloved musical Celtic roots.

Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston) has a new discovery in the wake of a very successful young find Josh Groban. Michael Buble (pronounced boo-blay) is a 25-year-old singing sensation whose smooth voice & heartthrob style harks back to the swingin' greats of earlier decades, to the likes of Frank & Dean, but also speaks to a new generation's sensibility. 2003 self-titled debut from Reprise/143.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-06-27

I love this CD. Perhaps its my love of old music or Michael Buble's wonderful voice! I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars "Just a Dream".......2007-06-12

Michael Bublé's voice takes me to another dimension high above. His voice has an undescribable quality that you have to experience to understand. He's like a cross between Frank Sinatra and Jack Jones. If you enjoy the standards of the American Songbook, you'll love the fresh yet traditional versions of the standards which he sings. I've been listening to the standards sung by Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc for decades and usually don't enjoy remakes by recent modern artists; Michael Bublé is one of the rare exceptions who outshines all of the recent standards singers wannabes.

This CD is an incredibly great album to from start to finish; there's no need to skip songs which are merely mediocre or plain terrible because each song is a great rendition and a true gem.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Buble'.......2007-06-09

Can't say enough about this new and up coming singer. He sounds to me so much like Sinatra when he was young. This album is very good and I enjoyed it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Michael Bublé..........2007-06-02

Jane Monheit has a lovely voice, one that in its purest, most lilting form reminds you of the young Barbra Streisand, with the show-stopping qualities that suggests. Her haunting rendition of Sergio Mendes'"So Many Stars," the runaway highlight of Surrender, is also one of the best things she's ever done. (Mendes arranged and produced the track and plays keyboard on it.) Since she stopped trying so hard to be a jazz singer and found her mark as a popular vocalist specializing in Brazilian music (there are also guest turns by singer Ivan Lins and harmonica great Toots Thielemans), Monheit has sounded more at home with herself. The problem is, as delectable as her instrument is, her performances, more often than not, have a perplexing emptiness to them: they're like romantic settings with candles providing the requisite glow but no real warmth. She's only 29, which means she has plenty of time to deepen as an artist. But it could also be that what you hear now is what you're going to get in the future. --Lloyd Sachs

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Jane Monheit Surrenders to Mediocrity.......2007-06-25

Jane Monheit, a once-promising talent, released "Surrender" in 2007. It is her weakest, most spiritless release to date. Her "Surrender" song interpretations are unremarkable, undemanding, and unconvincing. Her vocal stylizations distinctly lack variety and virtuosity. Most condemnable of all, her uninspiring delivery makes every lyrical sentiment of every song sound routine and insincere.

Her vocals are framed cheaply by "canned" instrumental (especially the string) arrangements that sound like some of the worst Muzak or "elevator music" ever recorded. Jane Monheit and crew are creating audio mannequins on "Surrender"--lifelike but bloodless songs that remind me of puddles of standing water on a city pavement at night, reflecting light, but flowing nowhere. And that's the once-potent Jane Monheit on vocals, lazily poking at the puddles with a twig. If "Never Never Land," her debut album, suggested a young vocalist on the rise, budding like a rose, "Surrender" features the same singer, clueless, compromising, and on her knees. "Surrender" indeed.

4 out of 5 stars I rather like it.......2007-06-17

One thing is for sure, everyone who thought that Norah Jones is a good singers should listen to this! Jane Monheit is a real singer and musician. Jones is merely a "wannabe".

I have listened to this album on and off at work for two weeks now and I find it, at best, quite touching and sensual, and, at worst, undemanding. I think one could use this album as background music. But if one turns up the volume we are presented with some very stylish interpretations of some standards. If I was in a piano bar and hearing this music, I would be very satisfied.

Jane Monheit has quite a powerful and expressive voice. Here basic timbre is very attractive and she has a good tessitura and she sounds unforced from the top to the bottom of her range. Id est: she can sing.

Her instrumental accompaniment is colourful enough and never overwhelms the voice. If I had any criticism of this album it would be that it is a trifle unadventurous - it is clear to me that Monheit is capable of doing many things in music.

I would enjoy listening to this album juxtaposed Gabriela Anders's album "Last Tango In Rio".

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant........2007-06-15

She may have started out as a jazz vocalist but these days Jane Monheit seems to have ditched any semblance of swing in favour of sickly string arrangements.

Her voice is lush and exquisite but she overdoes the breathiness - to the point that one wonders if a ventilator is required - and sticks too much to indistinguishable, slow bossa novas and ballads.
The result is a florid and bland album that washes over the listener.

My favourite tracks are : "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" and "So Many Stars".

3 out of 5 stars Folks listen to RC, his review is a laser beam on target. Statement album needed badly. .......2007-06-10

My small addendum. Monheit has the best voice in jazz today. I'm a 5 year fan.
On stage 3 weeks ago in Boston with her band she was great. But she badly needs a statement album - one that defines her and her talent. She has been with at least 3 labels and I think that they have been pulling this immensely talented singer in too many directions. Her vocal breadth is so extraordinary and she can do so much vocally that she ends up doing a little of everything well but her albums are not cohesive sounding. They sound watered down and undefined. You never know what you are going to get from song to song and it's been getting worse on the newer albums. I was hoping with the change to a Jazz label like Concord that this would be behind her but not yet. What are those A&R types doing? I even congratulated here on her new label after the show and there was an unstated acknowledgment that her and Sony were not a good fit. Like RC I hope the next CD is great, because I'm running out of patience after 7 CD's and several other tracks on various artists albums and 6 live shows. She is t o o good t o o waste. So how about it producers? - Give us some jazz, give us some swing. Give us the real Jane and get rid of the strings.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Voice.......2007-06-01

It's been a jong time since a voice like Jane Monheit was heard. It is notable by its clarity and sensuousnessI intend to buy other CDs by her.

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr.

In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). (The DVD offers up a similar take on Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," for instance.) The DVD portion of this combo set doubles the ante by offering 18 tracks (plus a bonus "Song for You" with Chris Botti) to the CD's 8. There's also a 20-minute backstage featurette showing what goes into the preparation for the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars You are so gonna love it!!!.......2007-06-19

I have never liked concert videos very much. Even when I loved a singer or a band it was hard for me sit through an entire concert DVD, no matter how handsome or talented they were. I guess I felt it was a poor experience compared to the excitement of the real thing.

But Caught In The Act is so good that even I can't stop watching it. Why? Well...

1. Michael Bublé is a great singer. No, he is a great PERFORMER. He has no only a beautiful, velvet-like voice but he feels every song and it shows.

2. Great band! Awesome musicians. It's a real privilege to see and listen to such an amazing group of artists.

3. The songs are wonderful. Some may say that Bublé plays safe with proved hits but he sings every song in his unique style without betraying the spirit of the genre.

4. The guy is so funny!!! "Caught In The Act" is like one of those 2x1 specials. You get a great concert AND live comedy! His "impersonation" act is hilarious, especially because this time there is a surprise for him too.

5. And it doesn't hurt that the guy is good looking too. Absolutely NOT the most important part of the show but a nice bonus nevertheless.

This CD+DVD is an absolutely MUST. There is no way you will regret buying it.

5 out of 5 stars The CD was remarkable, the DVD was entertaining!.......2007-06-10

I was first introduced to the wonderful talents of Michael Buble while I was looking for the song "Sway" on iTunes. Ever since, I've been hooked to Mr. Buble's music.

Michael Buble's performance thoughout the DVD is downright remarkable. He performed the songs that can be found on the CD as well as a few surprises here and there. Somewhere after track 10 on the DVD, Buble performs a cover edition of Maroon 5's "This Love". I'm a huge Maroon 5 fan and Michael's performance was hillarious when he made up words to the rest of the song because he didn't know (or remember) them.

Anyway, if you're looking for a glimpse of what the atmosphere at a Michael Buble concert is like, check out this DVD. It takes place at what seems to be a classy venue and the people in the DVD have so much fun dancing and singing to his popular songs.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-05-15

this is a fantastic CD. I wish there was a DVD to go with it!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-13

Michael Buble is one of the most talent artists out there. His arrangements of the standards are great, and he is giving new life to this wonderful music and bringing it to a whole new generation. While watching the DVD of this performance, I feel like I'm right there on stage with him because he has this great ability to make you feel connected to his performance. I loved the DVD and I would recommend this, and all of his CD's to anyone.
