Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Lou Donaldson's undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren't as sleepy as some of Donaldson's subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. What elevates Blues Walk to classic status is its inviting warmth. Donaldson's sweetly singing horn is melodic throughout the six selections, making even his most advanced ideas sound utterly good-natured and accessible. The easy-swinging title cut is arguably Donaldson's signature tune even above his late-'60s soul-jazz hits, and his other two originals - "Play Ray" and "Callin' All Cats" - are in largely the same vein. Elsewhere, Donaldson displays opposite extremes of his sound; the up-tempo bebop classic "Move" provokes his fieriest playing on the record, and his romantic version of "Autumn Nocturne" is simply lovely, a precursor to Lush Life. The addition of Ray Barretto on conga is a subtle masterstroke, adding just a bit more rhythmic heft to the relaxed swing. There are numerous likable records in Donaldson's extensive catalog, but Blues Walk is the best of them all.

England's Faces (1970-1975) wound up playing stadiums, but they always had a compact, pub-band feel. They were proud boozers, tuning up wasn't a major obsession, and Rod Stewart (in pre-disco prime) always sounded like he'd sung himself hoarse the night before. They kept the mood light, but ensemble work was deceptively tight, thanks to drummer Kenney Jones (later Keith Moon's replacement in the Who) and guitarist Ron Wood (post-Jeff Beck, pre-Stones), who'd switch between raunchy lead and raunchy rhythm roles between beats. Wood's blues-drenched slide work snuffed most of his rock competition, and helped define the band's wiry sound. But Faces offered more than teapot blues. Tuneful bassist Ronnie Lane's sweet voice and countryish melodies--think "Ooh La La," revived as the movie Rushmore's closing theme--both lightened and deepened the texture. Keyboardist Ian McLagan picked and sequenced 67 tracks, programming them out of chronological order, to flow like concert sets. Included are abundant rarities--out-takes, b-sides, rehearsals, BBC-broadcast excerpts--including live takes of songs Faces recorded under Stewart's name, like "Gasoline Alley" and "Maggie May." (A few tunes are heard in live and studio versions.) It's a very good selection of music that wears remarkably well. --Kevin Whitehead
Album Description
From 1969 to 1975 the Faces - Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones - played their loose and joyful blues and soul-inflected rock 'n' roll with reckless abandon, consummate skill, and immeasurable charm. For those few years they were arguably the greatest band on the planet, and their influence has resonated ever since through the music of countless acts, from the Sex Pistols to The Replacements to The Black Crowes, and on and on. After the Faces dissolved in 1975, Stewart went on to solo superstardom, Wood to the Stones, Jones to The Who, McLagan to world - class session work and his own recordings, and Lane to acclaimed solo projects before he succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1997. Greater than the sum of its parts, the Faces made now - immortal music for which there will never, ever be a last call.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best rock'n roll box sets ever.......2007-05-29
I wasn't terribly familiar with the Faces, but a friend got this and I was blown away. Booze and blues. Great stuff. A four discs are fantastic. If you like British blues this is for you.
Only negative is the packaging is the typical nonsense these days. It is a book format with four overlapping CDs. What should come is four jewel cases with a separate book. The book here is epoxied to the binder and weak and anything resembling a digipak sucks and scratches the discs.
Put the discs in jewel cases and enjoy the book.
Great stuff.
Oh La La!.......2007-04-19
Always had a soft spot in me heart for Ronnie Lane and the Faces...best show I ever saw matter of fact to this very day...what I remember of it that is...Woody's slippin' and slidin' up against Mac's snortin' B-3 (can't forget his Wurly too) and a singer (what's your name again?) that didn't require a mike...would recommend this box set w/ several thumbs up.
Five Guys with Rod.......2007-01-15
Great CD. Had 1 skipping track but other than that defect the best
collection of Rod and Faces that I've yet to hear together in one package.
Great info too on the band with an included booklet.
Truly the best from Rod's rocking era.
The best thing about these selections is that they are from a member of the band : Ian McLagan, the pianist/organist.
Very little known tracks that made the band's personality come to life are featured. Some rehearsal tracks are not too intriguing. They are rehearsals. By and Large this CD collection is well worth the money for any Faces fan who saw them live in concert in the 70's.

Never think for a moment that THE FACES were not the epitome of sincere & home grown good guys. They were a force in rock that could not be challenged. At 53 yrs now I wish those wonderful days could be known to a musically inept bunch of cretans

Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Album Description
"Moonlight In Vermont" may have made Johnny Smith famous, but this 1954 session with rhythm guitarist Perry Lopez, bassist Arnold Fishkin and drummer Don Lamond is his masterpiece. Originally issued over two 10" LPs, these 13 songs shows an innovative guitarist with astonishing technique and lightning-fast mind. These gems are ripe for rediscovery in the guitar world. The closing "Lullaby Of Birdland" features Smith playing a duet with himself through early overdubbing. The title tune, a Johnny Smith original, became a Top Ten hit six years later for The Ventures. Remastered in 24 bit from the original mono tapes.
Customer Reviews:
Classic guitar playing.......2006-11-10
How does one rate a singularity? There aren't enough stars. Johnny Smith is one of a kind and we all should be grateful to have the benefit of his talent and love for music and the guitar.
great cd WORTHLESS COPY PROTECT.......2006-11-10
I agree with all ppl saying this cd is wirth the money and contains great music, i really really do, therefor the 5 stars.
Now for rating the publisher minus 1278 stars, beware of new issues with "copy controlled" copy protection for it sucks big time. The cd might encounter "some problems on certain players like carstereo's ".
Well let me tell you, the thing will only play on my pc and on my cd player. I cant play it on any other stereo and not even on some ppl's normal cd players...... i thought about checking every cd i buy from now for the stamp of the copy protection being on or not but i see here that amazon doesnt have a picture where it is on the cd. So how can i be sure my next cd will not have the same stupid gimmick on it...
I will not buy any EMI cd's printed after 2004 anymore....
Enjoy a REALLY REALLY great cd but DO remember i warned you:)
The original "Walk, don't run".......2006-07-29
Until this CD came out last summer you had to either buy the Mosaic 8 disc set or the Japanese release of Kaleidoscope to hear Johnny play "Walk, don't run." Well, now you can hear it and it, alone, is worth the price of the disc. After hearing Johnny's version it's amazing how simple the Ventures' version seems. Even the great Chet Atkins played WDR for Johnny one time and Johnny graciously started playing along and Chet was speechless. Everything else is great on this disc too. Johnny Smith is legendary among jazz guitarists. Deservedly so. His chords and voicings are unlike anyone else. Then his single note lines are so fluid but musical. This is a great place to start listening to Johnny and also the Moonlight in Vermont CD, as well as Legends. Perhaps the greatest thing about Johnny is at the height of his popularity he gave it all up and left NYC to take care of his daughter after his wife's death. He never regretted it he says. You have, then, a music legend with the right priorities. A true class act. What will be really great is if Verve will ever put out their Johnny Smith CD (with his Gibson model on the cover)or someone will release his solo album, "The Man with the Blue Guitar" on CD.
Great recording, great artist.......2005-09-30
I mainly bought this CD to hear the original recording of "Walk Don't Run." Johnny Smith wrote it, Chet Atkins covered it, etc. For those of us who only ever heard the Ventures' version, it is a revelation that this was originally a jazz tune.
Oh yeah, the rest of the CD is excellent. Johnny Smith has very few recordings available, to my knowledge. I encourage all students and/or admirers of fine, melodic playing to seek out all of them.
The Legend of Smith.......2005-09-22
Johnny Smith a few years was essentially a forgotten man. Not well known amongst jazz guitarists, let alone the wider jazz community, a few years ago the vast majority of this man's work was out of print. Thankfully, all that is changing with releases such as this. 'Walk, don't run!' proves why Smith has been held in awe by his peers and fans alike and bears testimony to why he is regarded as one of the foremost post Charlie Christian guitarists. From the lightning fast runs of 'What's New' and 'Lover Man' to the chordal sophistication of 'Sophisticated Lady' and the boppish lines of 'I'll remember April' and ''S Wonderful', Smith was the complete musician. He has often been described as a 'scientist' because of the precision with which he plays; but don't let that put you off: his music is anything but cerebral. It's just that Smith had the most prodigious technique to express anything he wanted to with a beautiful, poetic tone: an artist and scientist in equal measure.
If you are a fan of jazz guitar this recording is essential. If you are a fan of jazz this record is still essential. For those of you who feel perhaps that the guitar still doesn't 'cut it' like horns do, an anecdote: when Smith played at Birdland, Bird himself was one of Smith's biggest fans, consistently sitting near the front listening intently to Smith. That in itself should be good enough recommendation to buy this.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'
Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26
This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

Album Description

Alone on a Street Of Blue Notes.......2001-07-21
Lou Donaldson made his mark with this one...probably his best, then again this was 1958 and he had many more albums to cut. He was young and inventive and he made his own tune "Blues Walk" a classic. Take this and then jump to the second cut "Move" another legitimate bop standard up there with anything written by anybody...in fact the entire CD is up there with anything ever written......and why I don't see it on anyones Jazz To Have Lists can only be explained by pure oversight or lack of record company hype (support)...I know, a lot of great Jazz came out of the 1950's but this one is a definitive stand out. I write about music but never recommend anything...but...forget about Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins for a minute and get this album...it catches every mood and rises to the top of all the Blue Note releases... you just can't put it down.
Blues Walk: A First-Rate Lou Donaldson Group.......2000-04-15
Although Lou is wonderfully facile in this Blue Note session from the late 1950s, it's Herman Foster, the great pianist, who steals the show, with convincing evidence that a complex harmonic instrument need not be treated as another variant on the Horace Silver/Bud Powell single-note theme. Foster's highly sophisticated two-handed harmonies in "Play Ray", a medium tempo blues for Barretto, are worthy of transcription. This is a virtuoso pianist with an aggressive, percussive approach which is atypical of Blue Note recordings of the era. The intensity of Foster's attack in Denzil Best's "Move" is phenomenal. Check it out.

Beautiful, powerful, inspiring songs and voice........2006-12-10
ANGEL and ALL THIS LOVE IS WAITING FOR YOU by DeBarge are the only songs to bring tears to my eyes and 'touched my very soul'. Incredibly beautiful, powerful song. ANGEL is worth the price of the CD.
a find!.......2006-12-09
I stumbled on this purely by accident. Unimpeded by some minor technical glitches, this is a wonderful piece of work. How is it that JS remains relatively obscure? Wow! It probably means something when every rating is at 5 stars.
PURE Talent!.......2006-03-21
I bought this CD based solely on the song "Have You Ever Been Lonely?" Now that I've listened to the CD, I'm truly impressed. I've never heard of this gentleman, but he has definite skills!! (What is truly special is that many of the songs have scriptural references.) If you like the musical genre "neo-soul", coupled with words of hope, love, faith and redemption, you'll love this album.
Go Buy this one - Praise GOD!.......2006-01-10
This is an excellent album by John. I discover John on a TV show and have not stopped playing his CD yet. I love "Angel" and many, many others on this CD. I wish my local status will play him. I recently saw John on TVONE so I'm hoping the exposure will bring a live performance in the Mid-west. You cant go wrong with this CD. Listen to it before and after work. You will truly be blessed. Thanks John and GOD Bless. I look forward to your next project.
Refreshing..........2005-03-31
Excellent mixture of the keyboard and guitar. The lyrics are so uplifting, they make you feel goooood. The songs are definitely about love, but not the same old love songs. This guy has his own unique style. My favorites are "everybody talkin" and "angel". The more I listen to the CD, the more I like it. I own over 200 CDs and buy 1 every week or so, I'm always searching for that CD containing 10 out of 10 good songs from the new generation of artist; this one is close. A bottle of wine, flowers, dim lights and this CD will get you out of the dog house everytime.

Power.......2006-06-11
I remember their last record. I think it was a live record. It was pretty good, but not a proper recording. Finally we have what I am talking about. Soledad Brothers are one of the best bands from Detroit. Now they are reaching out to the rest of the world. It's a lot of good old rock and roll. One of the best songs is "Downtown Paranoia Blues." This record is a trip. It goes back and forth between intensity and relaxation. It is a great album of roots rock and powerful emotions.
mesmerizing blues .......2006-06-05
The cd is beautiful and it rocks. It gently takes your soul into a dreamlike blues and brings you back renewed.
Potent Stones-influenced garage-blues.......2006-04-26
Grown in the same Detroit firmament as The White Stripes, this three-piece offers a similar blend of garage rock and blues, but without the two-piece minimalism. Their fifth album, the first for the California-based Alive Records, gains its intensity and blues heaviness more from the British Invasion (particularly the Stones, Yardbirds and Pretty Things) than directly from the Mississippi Delta or Chicago bars. The potent rhythm guitar interplay and the punk-tinged vocals are particularly remindful of mid-60s blues reinterpreters. The band's originals add touches of psychedelia and glamrock swagger, and on "Good Feeling" a taste of the Memphis soul that Big Star brought to the rock 'n' roll party. The band's fascination with the Stones hasn't subsided, but it's definitely evolved, as though their debt has been paid but not forgotten. [?2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]
