Jack Bowers, allaboutjazz.com
Awesome. Spectacular. Breathtaking. Sublime. Simply put, one of the most memorable big-band albums in recent memory.
Jeffrey Weber, multi-Grammy-winning producer
What a band! All incredible players. They are as tight as any band I have heard. Great job.

Just OK CD.......2004-04-09
What took me by surprise about this CD was the lack of vocals in the songs. Tracks 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 15 had no vocals whatsoever, which comprises about half of the CD and you can't tell this from the music list that they give here. However, I must admit the music is very good and the ones that do have vocals are good as well. If you don't care about vocals as much as I do or just want a mix of vocals/instrumental music, this CD is great for you.
Great cd.......2003-09-05
This album is a good choice if you'd like a different sound then the typical wedding music. Fun, lively yet appropriate music for a wedding. Good choice.
Wonderful!.......2002-10-08
The previous reviewer who didn't like the sound quality must not realize that these recordings date back to the '30s. They didn't have digital recordings then. Part of the charm of recordings from this era is the fuzziness. It's part of jazz history.
We loved this cd and chose our first dance song from it: "My One and Only Love".
Dissapointing! I returned it!.......2002-04-11
I really did not care for this CD and I can't believe that anyone likes it! What a poor quality recording and boring music. I have never returned a CD but the recording quality of every song varied so much that I kept having to adjust my stereo volume and setting for each song. DON"T waste your money!
wedding music for the new world.......2002-01-09
Now, we're cookin'. I love Mozart, Chopin, etc., but this is music for the new millenium! Celebrate!

Gotta get this one.......2007-01-19
Endearingly known to his friends as the Arban Cowboy, Carl is the greatest! I have all his CD's and look for him on other artists' recordings as well. He's ALWAYS the one to check out. Not to be overlooked - ever.
Long overdue.......2005-02-15
Trumpeter Carl Saunders has been a first-call player for West Coast big bands for many years, but he only started to record as a leader in the mid-1990s. This disc is his first crack at leading his own big band, & it is, as you'd expect, a superb disc. Saunders has stunning chops & imagination on the horn--he likes wide intervals & can hit high notes with a nice tone & pitch (rather than making them sound like sirens going off). But he's not a prima donna: in fact, the album is largely a tribute to the work of the late arranger/composer/trumpeter Herb Phillips: the album includes six of his charts, including the knockout opener "Compilation" (a brisk "I Got Rhythm" variant) and the lovely "An Apple for Christa" (a tribute to the ill-fated teacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe). The rest of the charts are shared out among various hands--Ivan Lins, Bill Rogers, Jackson Stock, John Boice, Mike Barone--& they all sound excellent: always warm rather than blaring, & never settling for slick riffing or excessive cleverness (though perhaps the multiple key-changes on "I'm All for You" are pushing it...). Saunders doesn't hog the limelight--in fact, on a few tunes he doesn't solo at all (Johnny Mandel's "Emily" is a trombone feature for Andy Martin, for instance). Pianist Christian Jacob sounds especially strong on his two features; my only quibble would be that the usually reliable alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan seems rather one-dimensional here, relying on the same formulaic Bird lick over & over again. But otherwise this is a very fine disc, recommended to fans of mainstream big-band music or to anyone looking for some first-rate trumpet.
"SIZZLER" !!!.......2005-01-06
Carl Saunders has gathered together the leading West Coast musicians and arrangers and recording technicians...AT THE PEAK OF THEIR POWERS...and created what will surely be a landmark "Big Band" recording. If you like flawless musicianship, this one's for you!
Wow!.......2002-11-02
If you are a jazz fan, if you appreciate the sound of a band comprised of some of the west coast's best players, if well-crafted, swinging arrangements are your cup of tea, if you are a trumpet player and want to feel totally inadequate, then you must get this CD! It is big band jazz as good as any you can hear. And the virtuousity of Carl Saunders is extraordinary! He possesses a beautiful sound, a very personal creative style, remarkable technical facility and a range that almost defies description! He can play lead, he solos imaginatively and I wouldn't be surprised if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound! The band members are the who's-who of west coast artists and they play like they play together all the time....which, of course, they do....in various settings. My highest personal recommendation on this recording!!

The Yuletide washes in the many moods of the season and Yule Be Miserable makes a great attempt at capturing those darker holiday sentiments that come with the holly and the ivy. Still, the title's slightly misleading--even with its cool liner notes by comic book icon Harvey "American Splendor" Pekar. While some of these blues tunes (like the renowned Billie Holiday's "Stormy Blues" and Spike Jones' whiney "My Birthday Comes on Christmas") are decidedly down and out, the performances generally will knock off those stockings hung with care. For every tune like Aaron Neville's pleading "Please Come Home for Christmas" or Billy Eckstine's "Blue Christmas," there's more light-hearted fare such as Louie Armstrong's inimitable "'Zat You, Santa Claus?," the two spirited tracks from Ella Fitzgerald ("Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney," "Baby, It's Cold Outside"), and B.B. King's torn-up "Merry Christmas, Baby." Misery this bad never sounded so good. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Good Music.......2006-12-25
Though the title is slightly misleading and this isn't a collection of music that has you considering ending it all, it's good music that's fun to listen to and enjoy.
The title cracks me up, I just wish that it was used for some down and out Holiday music.
I'm only gettin' half of what I oughta........2005-12-15
This CD is supposed to feature unhappy Christmas songs. But in reality, not very many of these songs are particularly mournful. But most of the songs are good, with the exception of Spike Jones' awful version of "Nuttin' For Christmas" (sung by a group of kids). But what is Billie Holiday's "Stormy Blues" doing here, which, although it fits the "miserable" concept, doesn't have anything to do with Christmas? It's also strange that they included two versions of the instrumental "Christmas Blues", although both versions are good. This is a decent CD, but it could have been much better.

Album Description
JC Hopkins is a triple threat: writer, performer and producer. He does all three on Underneath a Brooklyn Moon. With original songs rooted in big band jazz, be-bop, and the classic American Songbook, Hopkins has drawn comparisons to the likes of Mose Allison and Van Dyke Parks for his clever turns of phrase and elegant - and at times eccentric - arrangements.
JC Hopkins' Biggish Band creates that special alchemy of Americana jazz - something akin to Irving Berlin conducting a Moondog street symphony - that sounds simultaneously bold and classic, sophisticated and searching.
Brooklyn Moon features the vocals of
Queen Esther, plus a deeply pedigreed group of supporting players that includes
Patience Higgins (Savion Glover) and on saxophone,
Warren Smith (Miles Davis, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin), on vibraphone, and
Vincent Chancey (Sun Ra Arkestra) on French horn, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Upbeat Jazz with excellent vocals.......2006-01-09
I listened to this album on one of those listening
stations at my favorite music store. I did not expect it
to be this good. The mid century style music and Queen Esther's
beautifully clear voice makes this an instant classic for me.
I rarely buy CDs anymore (all about itunes) but I fell in love with
this one.
Wonderful songwriting, Superb Musicians.......2005-08-10
Whether you're a hard-core jazz fan or someone in search of a little mood music, you'll really love this album.
Somehow this album delivers a nod to the best of the classic American songbook along with a thoroughly modern approach to jazz. The songwriting is absolutely wonderful and you'll find yourself humming these songs all day after one listen. And these seemingly simple tunes offer tremendously fertile ground for the musicians' improvisation - the mark of future jazz standards.
The musicians really are superb and their talent shines throughout this recording. I particularly enjoy Warren Smith's work on the vibes, Patience Higgens on the tenor sax, and J. Walter Hawkes on the trombone. However, all the musicians play wonderfully together and you just feel the joy in their music. And Queen Esther fronts it all with strength and style.
In addition to the title track, my particular favorites are "I've Got My Finger on a Star," "Someday," and the "Small Town," but there is a lot to love on this record.

Customer Reviews:
Great modernistic late 40's bebop swing.......2004-02-27
Great vocals, great arrangements, great drummin, man it's CARZY and cool stuff.
Chiquita Banana.......2002-10-23
As far as I know, this is the first CD appearance of Krupa's version of the Chiquita Banana Song. And while the reviewer above may think it banal, that theme became a popular "quote" for beboppers - especially Wardell Gray who worked it into many of his solos.
Anyway back to this CD - yes most of the other tunes are available elsewhere, but its still nice to have all this modern bop influenced Krupa on one CD.
Nothing Much New & Idiotic Cover Art.......2002-09-26
Unfortunately Columbia is just regurgitating the same material into new releases. Nothing much new here that isn't already available. On another note, the person who came up with this cover art knows nothing about Gene apparently. Gene played Slingerland drums virtually his entire career. The cd shows him sitting behind a modern Yamaha set with an 18" bass drum! Gene never played anything smaller than a 22."
The beauty and fullness of the big bands.......2002-06-06
This CD has all the elements of what was great about the big bands. Full, beautifully executed arrangements on the ballads, (with the fine voice of Buddy Stewart), and wonderfully swinging Jazz. It's always interesting to see what a great band was able to do with banal material such as Chiquita Bannana. With a good beat and stellar soloists you realize a band like this could swing just about anything.
I highly recommend this CD as a Prime example of the BIG BANDS.
