A compilation of Cuban conguero Ramon "Mongo" Santamaria's first two albums for Fantasy Records, Afro Roots features not only an all-star percussion section, including Willie Bobo, Francisco Aguabella, Carlos Vidal, and Armando Perazza, but also musicians such as flutist Paul Horn, vibist Cal Tjader, and saxophonist Jose "Chombo" Silva. This disc also includes the original version of Santamaria's classic "Afro-Blue" (a simmering, sensual reading featuring Horn). The music, closer to traditional Cuban music than to any notion of Latin jazz, sounds as fresh and engaging as when it was recorded, in 1958. The set includes nods to traditional Afro-Cuban religious ritual music ("Afro-Blue," "Bata," "Imaribayo") and classic rumba ("Chano Pozo," "Meta Rumba," "Yambu," "Columbia") but also conga ("Conga Pa Gozar"), merengue-rumba ("Che-Que-Re-Que-Che-Que"), and an elegant but forceful mambo ("Mazacote," featuring Tjader). --Fernando Gonzalez

Made up of former displaced persons from the killing fields of Sierra Leone, members of the Refugee All Stars (a.k.a. R.A.S.) were forced to flee for their lives during the 1990s, fanning out into nearby West African nations. Through continued hard times, bandmates Reuben M. Koroma, Francis (Franco) Langba, and Abdul Rahim (Arahim) Kamara entertained and heartened their compatriots with truthful, gently satiric, liltingly infectious tunes. Filmmakers Banker White and Zach Niles made a prize-winning documentary about the band's courageous struggle, thereby bringing their story to an international audience. Backed by Keith Richards, Sir Paul McCartney, and other socially conscious celebrities, R.A.S. embarked on a rapturously received world tour and were at long last able to augment their earlier, but nonetheless invaluable, field recordings with professionally engineered studio tracks. The resulting seventeen songs travel through deceptively relaxed Sierra Leonean Palm Wine music, triple-rhythmed gbute vang and reggae-like sounds (complete with toasting), Nigerian Afro-Beat, and even echoes of Congolese soukous. Backed by sweet yet astringent vocal harmonies, sultry guitars, homemade percussion, and playfully retro-sounding organ riffs, each selection reveals still another facet of a bittersweet but ultimately triumphant saga of survival. At long last, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are poised to become the superstars they were always destined to be. --Christina Roden

Album Description

This is a group of musicians who lived for years as refugees in the West African nation of Guinea. While living in a tent camp, they acquired a couple beat up guitars and a rusted out sound system and began playing. American documentary filmmakers made the band the focus of their movie, which received enthusiastic endorsements from the likes of Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie, Joe Perry, and Ice Cube. The film's success has allowed the band to tour internationally to ecstatic audiences. Born in the midst of a violent, decade-long civil war, the group and its music celebrate our ability to sustain hope, inspiration, and creativity - the best in us - even in a climate of rage, loss, and madness.

At a time when we are overwhelmed by negative and ignorant music (with few exceptions) in the US and elsewhere, this CD is a Godsend! Positive and uplifting music along with thought-provoking lyrics by people who really know that you can't be happy if you've never been sad.

The rapper Black Nature has a lot to teach his American rap counterparts. Keep up the good work brother, your work far outstrips the US rappers who have inspired you!

To Grace, The Emperors, and all the other RAS, God bless you all. ZBob Marely is smiling somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Living Like a Refugee CD is excellent for both music and content.......2007-05-13

I work with refugees here in the U.S. so I was particularly interested in listening to this group of musicians who formed a band while they were in refugee camp. The song "Living Like a Refugee" poetically describes some of the many feelings refugees have when they are uprooted from their homes and forced to flee to another country. Many of the refugees I am working with are from West Africa and they love hearing the music because they identify with the songs and they understand the ethnic languages used with the music. This is the first artistic and creative piece that I know about which has originated in a refugee camp and is now being listened to by ordinary people all over the world. I hope that the music will help all of us to understand that refugees are people just like us and that they deserve to be acknowledged and respected for the courage they demonstrate to the rest of the world, especially those of us in the U.S. who have no idea what it is like to "be a refugee".

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2007-01-15

If you like world music this will be a great addition to your music collection. It has a slight reggae feel to it at times but the lyrics make you really feel where it is coming from. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this 15 song album. Enjoy

Having visited Africa twice in the past 4 years I have developed quite a liking for the African music. This CD demonstrated a variety of lively songs.....music that is very invigorating. Not only providing the pleasure to hear good music, this CD purchase hopefully will enable more of the same in the future.

I have played it many many times when I'm doing errands around town and when I'm on the backroads. Anyone should like it who likes to travel and experience new places, new sounds and diverse flavors of life.

I alwasy take time to get used to a Putumayo album and this was no exception. I was disappointed at first after the first song but then took to the music. I find Putumayo an exciting musical experience.

The first song in this album is marvellous, while others just so so which is really a pity. I decided to buy it when I heard the first song but gave up afterwards.

There's no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001's Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice.......2006-02-04

It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"

All the other songs range from the great (Cjelo Rojo, Tirineni Tsitsiki) to the curious (Mother Jones) and to the original (covers of La Cucaracha and La Bamba), but Lila's Paloma Negra shines as the jewel and showpiece of this CD. If Chavela Vargas' version was the "classic", now it seems more like the pedestrian version to me. And don't get me wrong: I still think it was in itself an incredible performance. But if you want the overdrive, listen to the Lila Downs. Her's is so full of vioce and class, it will blow your mind away! Only in a song like this can it show, where the true genius of an artist really lies.

Let's hope there will be many more showpieces for Lila's endless talent and peerless voice to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!.......2005-07-05

I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!

Lila Downs is a Mexican-American vocalist, with a Scottish-American father, and a Mixteca mother. She grew up in both the Mexican state of Oaxaca and in Minnesota, USA, bi-lingual and bi-cultural. Lila received formal voice training in Mexico and in the States, and performs her own compositions, as well as tapping into the rich indigenous music from the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, and Nahautl cultures. Her variegated sound is a real fusion of Mexican folk songs, rich American blues and jazz, along with some pop, mixed in with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. I occasionally hear some gospel in there also. It is really difficult to pigeonhole her music and interpretations into a genre. This is a good thing! She is totally original.

"Viborita (Little Snake)," leads off with a fantastic driving Afro-Latino beat sustained by a fleet bass drum, with call-and-response vocals. It is very reminiscent of coastal music from Mexico, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean - similar influences, right? The poignant "Dignificada," comes right afterward, and really gives the artist an opportunity to show-off her versatility with this slow sensual bolero. "Cielo Rojo," (Red Sky), is an excellent cut, one of my favorites - a sort of Mexican flamenco with 3 very different guitars at work here. It's gypsy-like, with soaring vocals and Lila, at times, trilling a falsetto high in the back of her throat.

"Bamba" is her take on the 200+ year-old song that Ritchie Valens made famous outside of Mexico, and her version of "La Cucaracha" is a fabulous 'cumbia', which some folks mistakenly call reggae. Reggae, which I really like, is totally different. The cumbia is a Colombian folk dance and music, which originated among African slave populations on the country's Atlantic coast. It is popular in areas of Mexico and Latin America. Extremely sensual, the music is often classified as "salsa, played in 4/4 time with a heavy beat one and accentuated beats three and four, giving a loping rolling rhythm similar to 'riding a horse.'" Anyway, this version of "Cucaracha," which usually has political lyrics, is certainly the most unusual I have heard.

"Tiringue Tsitsiki" (Flower of Marigold), is beautiful and sweet. Lila harmonizes with herself with minimal accompaniment here. While Malinche, with Downs' deep-toned voice and powerful delivery is bold, with lots of percussion - snare drums, maracas, and harp. "Paloma Negra" is traditional Mexican, with a fresh touch. "Mother Jones," performed in English, is pure blues. "One Blood," and "Brown Paper People" are also sung in English.

Lila's husband, Paul Cohen, is the musical director and saxophonist. He has brought together an excellent, international group of instrumentalists who come from the US, Mexico (string-multi-instrumentalist, Celso Duarte), Cuba (bassist, Junior Terry Cabrera), Chile (drummer/percussionist, Yayo), and Brazil (guitarist, Guilherme Monteiro). Mexican and American guitarists Ernesto Anaya and Marvin Sewell, make guest appearances, as does the renowned Japanese percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.

This is a wonderful CD! Lila Downs is a unique artist - simply superb! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Another great offering.......2005-06-16

On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeper and more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon , much like a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invading and capturing your innermost feelings. There is a certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because of fine production and musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make them like a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dipping and weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , off my multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured here and they are all really good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evident on her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo," "La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and "Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsy sung in English "Mother Jones," the call to musical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction on the Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another in a succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Lila!!!.......2005-01-31

Lila Downs is by far the most amazing vocalist of our time. I have all her CD's and can't wait until the next. Her music and live shows are inspiring and moving. She's a Latina who keeps it real and is proud of who she is, where she comes from and where she's been. I had the honor of meeting her and her inner beauty surely compliments her outer beauty. Her talent is moving, and her humility inspiring. I recommend this CD 100% as well as all her others. Hear it for yourself... and catch her live performances when she's in your town!

4 out of 5 stars From Latin standard to modern vocals.......2004-11-18

UNA SANGRE/ONE BLOOD is perhaps the most startlingly contemporary. 'Viborita' opens with pounding drum beats, choral quality, and a beat that is contemporary in style.
Downs' vocals have moved from Latin standard to modern in UNA SANGRE, without losing any power.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IT'S CUBA!.......2007-01-10

It's definitly a great collection of the most pure and original "son" of Cuba. In spite the fact that it's made in NYC (what may bring up some old prejudice, specially from "latinos")you will feel yourself as if you were walking on the streets of Habana, partying at the Malencón, drinking the best ron and somking the great habanos cigars. In one word it's Cuba's spirit and character through music.

5 out of 5 stars durable, catchy, timeless.......2005-12-02

No it's not Fania. These guys try harder to push the envelope of Son in a different direction. Enduring performances that reveal increasing production skill. The editorial approach is chronological, so there's a progressive feeling to the anthology -- a direction. Well-recorded, well-mixed, well-chosen. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars Classic modern latin dance music from the 1970s.......2005-06-04

This swinging set of New York salsa/son cruises through the sweet, summery sounds of old-timers such as Chocolate Armenteros, Henry Fiol, Rey Roig, Roberto Torres and several less well-known (but no less thrilling) Cuban-American dance bands. It's great stuff, a collection that easily holds its own next to all the other salsa and boogaloo reissues out there these days. The liner notes are funny, though, with two parallel perspectives on the "salsa" vs. "son" nomenclature -- there's one strident argument that says the word "salsa" was all marketing/public relations BS, and another, mellower version that says, "Who cares? It's the same music, and it's all really good." I guess I slide into the second camp: when you've got stuff that sounds this sweet, why get all hung up on the name? This is a great collection, definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-11

First of all, don't pay any attention to the editorial that references the BVSC as being somehow even remotely related to this release. This is straight-up NYC Cuban Son. Not Salsa. Roberto Torres, founder of SAR Records explains a bit of what Jerry Masucci's role played in the term of "salsa" coming to be used by the masses to define virtually everything remotely Latin. There really is no "salsa." It's a b.s. term of merchandising. But, for this release...

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down. If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.

Get this, get this, get this. I cannot state that enough. Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff for S/A music fans.......2004-11-23

This is good stuff for fans of S/A music.

Solomon Linda & His Original Evening Birds' recording of "Mbube" (aka Wimoweh) is well known to S/A music fans and is on numerous compilations, but along with this we get to hear our heroes on some other songs. These guys were really talented.

There are some other mbube groups featured in unreleased recordings and well as ultra-rare recordings from SABC radio. Some of these tunes feature minor instrumentation via piano or banjo, but these are as much fun as the acapella songs.

All of the songs are in Zulu, but you get an idea of what's going on as the titles of the songs are translated on the liner notes.

As a bonus, we have the VERY FIRST radio recording of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (1967)-the group that made this style internationally known. Thier sounds has remained consistant through the years.

If you like S/A music, you'll love this. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal: an introduction into South African music.......2004-08-21

This is a great recording. Featuring the original stars of "Isicathamiya" and "Mbube" type singing like Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds, the Crocodiles and of course, the current Isicathamiya legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo with their first ever radio transcription, from 1967. This album is a great, brilliant and factual insight into South African music, with the original so-called 'Wimoweh', "Mbube". The latter sounded very original and yes, more rhythmic than the American versions. The inlay and booklet features information on the songs and artists, with a great picture of Ladysmith in 1968 and Solomon Linda's Evening Birds, in 1941. If you want to listen to the music that made Ladysmith and other stars famous for what they do today, buy this album. A definate 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A smell of South Africa.......2001-05-07

This CD is a guide to South African music. It's reveal the roots of famous musicians like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba and others. The tracks vary from clasical chorals (listen to Mbube) to some African country music with nice instrumental parties. The only disadvantage is the recording quality of some tracks transferred from old LPs. Nothing to do - it's history!

5 out of 5 stars Afro Roots is just what is says!.......2006-01-31

This is a great CD that showcases some different styles of Afro-Cuban music. This is the African roots of Cuban music and the foundations that Latin Jazz is built on. Mongo Santamaria is a master percussionist and his playing will move you, it will move you physically and stir your soul!

4 out of 5 stars Mongo (The Master Conguero) music will live for ever!.......2004-09-14

I was so glad to see this CD available that I had to buy it. To me he was and still is the best conga player of all times. I had the pleasure to meet him in person back in 1980 at the Miami Metro Zoo Jazz concert, and was able to get from him his autograph. I still have it with some pictures that were taken during the concert.
I have the original vinyl (1970) double album. However, apparently who ever made the recording did not include one of the best sons that is in the vinyl double album, and that is: "Mi Guaguanco" an excellent recording of the traditional Afro- Cuban sound that was left out because of budget and time availability; come on give me a break! That is a sorry ass excuse. I would have preferred to eliminate the Mazacote song instead. After all Mazacote is included in other albums too! My opinion is that if you are going to do some thing do it right! Shame on you for not including all of the great works of the best congero that ever lived! That is why I gave it a (4) rating, apart from that the CD is a good investment like all the other recordings from this Master Conguero. It's a must to have for your conga collection. I hope someday they will make a compilation of all his recordings and "Mi Guaguanco" will be included. Buy it you will not regret it. Mongo may you R.I.P

5 out of 5 stars Caliente.......2003-01-17

I just bought the CD reissue of this: I've had the vinyl version since the '70's. It's an indispensible recording of percussion virtuousity, and since it's mostly drums (except for the work by Cal Tjader and Paul Horn) it gives Mongo plenty of room to stretch out. Plus it's like a textbook of Afro-Cuban rhythms: rhumba, guaguanco, congobel, etc.

There may be some "spiritual" overtones to the drumming (like there is in almost any music), but I'd say it's mostly secular music intended to let Mongo and his mates tear it up. If you want more specifically religious Cuban drumming, try Milton Cardona's "Bembe", which is Santeria ceremonial bata drumming.

4 out of 5 stars Intresting .. This CD is the BOMB!!!.......2002-03-14

Well to be honest this cd wasn't what I thought it was going to be when I purchased it. I was looking for something mello, with cool jazzy sounds, like Mongo's other stuff, to my suprise this cd gave me a trip to AFRICA. It was filled with beautiful dropplets of all kinds of drums, "AFRO BLUE" blew me away, that song is my favorite hands down. I would encourage anyone to buy this cd, who's into congos and a sweet trip to AFRICA.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the roots for the latin jazz listener..........2001-07-15

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE (especially if you're born in the late seventies/early eighties like myself) that is a jazz fanatic and has delved into the world of latin/jazz fusion MUST go back to this album. I am a Mongo Santamaria fan, I don't think that it was/is even possible for an album of his to be produced that's sub-par. This particular album contains one of the must have versions of the classic and frequently re-produced song, "Afro-Blue." You have to own this album and listen to see exactly why the likes of Coltrane and others just had to pay tribute to this classic.

Though he earned earliest acclaim as a blues traditionalist, Taj Mahal is no purist. Instead, he's an eclectic artist who finds common spirit with the blues in a multicultural array of styles. This album's acoustic arrangements lace the ukuleles, slack and steel guitars of Hawaii (where Taj lived for 15 years) with the airier strains of flute and saxophone and the lilt of the African kalimba. Within this follow-up to 1998's Sacred Island, the music island-hops from the Pacific to the Caribbean, as a blend of reggae and calypso influences highlight "Great Big Boat," "King Edward's Throne," and "African Herbsman." Taj and his Hula Blues band additionally apply their transformational power to a sinuously propulsive rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," as well as providing syncopated renewal for traditionals "Black Jack Davy" and "Stagger Lee" plus Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell." Straying furthest from bedrock blues, the lovely Hawaiian balladry of "Moonlight Lady" shimmers like moonbeams dancing across the ocean ripples. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The wistful blues.......2003-10-02

Has Taj Mahal lost it? One might think so after a superficial listen to his latest outing. Closer attending renders a different conclusion.

It's all about the vibe, here--one that, apparently, not everyone can get on board with. How can you have the blues on Hawaii? Or in the Caribbean? Simple. Not everyone is a plantation owner or scuba-diving tourist guide. Read V. S. Naipaul's great book, The Middle Passage, and find out what it means to be a "client culture."

Yes, there's a kind of inanity in much of the lyrics (although a good portion of them are traditional). Yes, this is miles from Mississippi John Hurt (although it contains one of his tunes), let alone Cory Bell or even Muddy Waters.

But you know what? Taj Mahal still works his magic here: The trademark vocal gruffness, esp. manifesting itself at the end of "Blackjack Davey" (easy to see where Captain Beefheart got his basic approach from), the raw edge of his electro-acoustic guitar (which has pretty much replaced his National Steel guitar), the loosy-goosy ensemble playing--all of which is perfectly suited to the island-blues vibe he's evoking here.

I, for one, celebrate this nifty transformation of the blues into an island key. And if you've got big ears, I think you will too.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste.......2003-09-09

I've played it through three times and am going to junk it.
It's [bad] - incredibly repetitive lyrics.
Whatever happened to the real Taj Mahal?
This is the last time I ever pay any attention to a magazine music reviewer. I would definitely like to have my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Island Taj.......2003-07-29

I've been a Taj Mahal fan for over two decades now, and the man never ceases to amaze me with his variety, artistry and creativity. My first initiation to Taj was through his early standard acoustic blues covers and originals, then I followed along as he tried his hand at blues-infused African rhythms, Reggae, Pop, Soul and duets with diverse musicians such as Toumani Diabate and Ry Cooder. This time around Taj combines blues with Hawaiian music and the results are stunning. From the great Hawaiian blues rendition of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', to the hauntingly beautiful Taj Mahal original 'Moonlight Lady', this is some incredible music. There are also some interesting blues standards here given new life with Hawaiian blues flavor, such as Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell' and the blues standard "Stagger Lee". Overall, this is a very impressive new release by one of blues music's true living legends, Taj Mahal. Highly recommended for fans of Taj, lovers of Hawaiian folk music, or fans of blues music everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars This is great stuff!.......2003-07-06

We were in Kauai for Christmas 2001 and they have kiosks which sell mostly Hawaiian music (slack key, etc) I spotted a Taj Mahal alblum on display and the clerk told me he lived on the island. I had not heard from Taj since the late 60's in San Francisco and was pleased to see he was still around. The clerk demo'ed a German release of this alblum and his Sacred Island alblum. I was blown away. It was the sound track for our two week vacation. My 86 year old father was with us and he loved it too. Sadly, he passed away shortly after our return. I still listen to these two often and remember our time there. Last Monday Taj was at Humphrey's in San Diego and we saw him there. After the show when only a dozen or so people were remaining, he came out and chatted with us. He is so pleasant and unpretentious and talented.

2 out of 5 stars This cd gives the blues..........2003-07-05

This cd gives the blues, but not in the way intended. This is a disappointing cd from a musician who has produced many great works. The music draws from Hawaiian music, but not enough. What comes out is a water down version mixed with a dash of R&B.
The band is not much better in concert. I recently saw them at the Fillmore in SF. They appear to be very good musician, but there is no spark. All the energy was coming from Taj. He had three ukulele players, and this could have been a great opportunity to show mainlanders what a great ukulele musician can do with four strings. But, these musician only played rhythm and mostly the three chords all ukulele students learn in the first lesson, G, F and A. My son and I, the next night, went to a concert of hawaiian music which was excellent by Amy Gillion, Willie K and Makana.
I advise getting Taj Mahal with the Phantom Band or earlier material. If you want hawaiian music visit the international music section at Amazon.com and try some of the musician listed above, or others such as Ohta-San, Sistah Robi, Iz, or many of the excellent slack key guitarist.

This is my favorite of the series. Tough roots from start to end.

4 out of 5 stars guidance's best compilation.......2004-11-29

If you're familiar with Guidance records, chances are you've got one of their Hi-fidelity Dub sessions compilations...I think they're up to number 5 or something. In fact a couple of these tunes can be found on other guidance releases, 'Horny dub' for instance.

This however is quiet different compared to those releases. Roots combination is one of the rootiest contemporary pieces of reggae/ dub to come out in recent times. It brings you back to the 1970's when Lee Perry et al were experimenting/ revolutionising dub music.

The album features a number of MC's including Sluggy Ranks, who espouses some very conscious lyrics on 'Nah Bow Down' as does Ruffscot on 'Greedy for the dollar'. There's a monstrous dub on 'Wicked a go dub it'.

Simply this a very good piece of work. The rythems are solid and the appearances of various MC's provide that rootsy feel. They don't go way over the top on the dubs but keep it nice and tight. This is my favourite Guidance record...greatness through and through.

4 out of 5 stars houstonsweb1.......2003-03-19

This is a pretty good CD. This is what I call cruz-n reggae. Real nice, getting with friends, BB Q-N, or just plain jumping in your car cruz-n. It's a very good price, so get it and enjoy. All praises to Jah. Out.

5 out of 5 stars Dub Inna Fine Retro Style.......2002-05-25

Well-produced, sophisticated yet rootsy dubs -- lots of good 21st century touches without sounding slick or overproduced. Bass n' drum firmly in the driver's seat with way-cool effects and riddims that will make your head bob like one of those dolls you see on car dashboards.

This is the way all modern dub recordings should be ... a deep-roots, bubbling, smoking, wallshaking successor to the classics of the 70s and early 80s. Nearly an hour's worth of slinky dreadiness. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Riddims.......2002-03-27

Very good dub cd put together by the masters at Guidance. It seems like you just can't go wrong with that label. Especially the Hi-Fi dub sessions, and this one is no different.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary vibraphone of Cal Tjader leads Latin Jazz........2001-08-22

Cal Tjader developed a thirst for Latin Music that became unquenchable when he discovered El Sonido Nuevo (The New Sound) of Afro-Cuban Jazz on the streets of New York City. He played with some of the all time greats through out his career, and from the founding of his Modern Mambo Quartet in 1954, to his death in 1982, he helped launch the careers of numerous musicians. His music continues to inspire, and have impact on the evolution of Latin music in the US.

The 16 tracks presented here are some mighty fine recordings, featuring Cal Tjader on vibes throughout. "Manteca" becomes a sexy weaving of melodies between the flute and vibes, adding depth to this modern classic. "Soul Burst" features an explosion of percussion by congas, timbales and more--while Tito Puente's "Picadillo" is rendered superbly as well.

Not a bad track on the CD, and you will have fun recognizing some of the 60's classic jazz performers that have joined in, including Chick corea, Donald Byrd, Willie Bobo, and more.
