The bass drum on the album cover says this band is drummer Max Weinberg's 7. And Weinberg (and his septet) gets the additional big-time network television credit as the house band for Conan O'Brien's Late Night show. The 18 jump, jive, and wail tunes on this debut prove, though, that guitarist, vocalist, and arranger Jimmy Vivino is a central force in guiding the band. An impressive jump-blues and boogie swing singer, he gives great performances on "Chi" and Jackie Wilson's classic "Baby, Work Out." He also gives his six-strings a workout on the latter track and on "Okie Dokie Stomp." Dr. John adds his distinctive vocal work on "Caught 'Em in the Act," pianist Scott Healy smokes "Nervous Boogie," and the tempo throughout is scorching. From the pulse-quickening opener, "Jumpted," to "The Last Minute," an old slow Jimmy McGriff groove that closes the album, this music is perfect as neo-swing and also as a genre blur that mixes blues, Louis Prima-styled boogie, and straight-up, chugging swing. A few of the tunes may be recognizable from the band's cutaways to commercials on "Late Night," including "Jam Up" and "Honey Dripper," but besides that, there's no hint of the television Max Weinberg. He's only heard here, not seen. --Mark Ruffin

The reason to love music...and Southside.......2006-11-14
Call it arrogance or call it hubris; call it what you will. I'm going to start to proclaiming my total and utter bias for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. I grew up in Jersey and spent the 60s in and around Asbury Park. I worked a snack stand in Convention Hall which gained me access to shows by the Stones; The Who (opening for Herman's Hermits!); the DC5; Paul Revere and the Raiders and a slew of others.
I also hung around Mrs. Jay's Beer Garden which was hard by Mrs. Jay's Resaurant; the former was as rowdy and the latter was not. But, it was at Mrs. Jay's and The Wonder Bar and The Upstairs that one got to see the local talent.
"Yeah," you say, "blah, blah, blah; you saw The Boss and Southside and all the others. BFD! What does that have to do with "Into the Harbour?"
Nothing and everything.
One of the other reviewers mentioned how Jersey was a amalgam of styles from The City (New York for the rest of you folks) and Philly. That meant a collision between hard-edged rock 'n' roll and lush soul-flavored rhythm and blues. That's why The Young Rascals had to be born in Jersey.
This synthesis had its apotheosis along the Jersey Shore, where was always a warm summer night; you were hanging out with you pals and the atmosphere was electric with sexual tension. Nothing epitomizes this more than the music of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, a band that for some thirty years has played a challenging melange of self-penned and cover-versions of paeans to love found and love lost. It was real life.
While Bruce Springsteen went on the arenas and world-wide acclaim, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes worked for a living. They were a bar band. There were numerous personnel changes. Many of the band members had other jobs. But, they entity that is Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes continued.
"Into the Harbour" is - I hope - simply the latest installment for the band and a fine installment it is. Whether covering Keith Richards and Tom Waits or singing your heart out on an original piece, this album is a must have for any afficinado of the music or the band. There is a maturity in some of the material, a reflectiveness that is touching and endearing. This is particularly the case with the title cut, a allegorical soliloquy about life and love and how over time one comes to learn what really matters. BTW - the cover shot is the bridge over the Shrewsbury River connecting Atlantic Highlands and Sea Bright. Many have come home under this bridge, back to their famillies and what keeps them striving to provide for them.
Buy it!
Enjoy it!
Like A Fine Wine, Johnny and the Jukes Get Better With Age.......2006-09-06
"Into The Harbor" is a real treat for loyal Jukes fans and for those who are new to their incredible sound. Recognized as "The World's Greatest Bar Band", Johnny and the Jukes are far more than that. Johnny's voice is truly amazing and the Jukes are as good or better than any band this side of E Street. The horns are fabulous, the arrangements are first class and the songs are a cross-section of classic Jukes sounds. You'll enjoy all of the songs but three - "Into The Harbor", "Dancing On The Edge of the World", and "Hang Down Your Head" - are truly outstanding. This is a CD that stands the test of time and will be one more classic for Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes.
Southside Johnny at his soulful best.......2006-08-15
In 1975, when Bruce Springstreen created "Born to Run," he said he wanted to take the best of Bob Dylan and mix it with the Philadelphia Wall of Sound of Phil Spector. The Jersey Shore's best music has always done just that: combine good lyrics and the outstanding rock and roll of NYC with the absolute soul of Philadelphia. There is simply none better at this combination then Johnny Lyon (if you need proof, just listen to Southside's version of Bruce's "Hearts of Stone"). "Into the Harbour" is a marvelous combination of rock and roll and soul. Starting with the Mick Jagger, Keith Richards "Happy," the album moves to Waits "Hang Down Your Head." But, the best is Southside Johnnny and the Jukes at their soulful best. The 5 minute "Don't call me baby" along with the title cut may simply be the best (and most souful) vocal performances I have ever heard from John Lyon, from whatever band he has had. This album is a treat.
SOUL, COGNAC AND RYTHM & BLUES.......2006-02-22

Swing to the Max!.......2003-05-28
Yeah, it would have been cool to start this disc with "Conan's theme", but what can you do. This isn't actually my kind of music, but if you're into big band and swing, there's no denying that these guys are excellent musicians. Also a generous 17 tracks. So if you dig "Brian Setzer Orchestra" and that whole sound, you'll love this. Just too bad they didn't do a song with "Triumph".
Thank God For The M>W 7.......2003-03-29
I watch all the late night shows but nothing makes my day more than when I hear Max and his band on Conan.I can't think of any other band that does the kind of thing that they do that has inspired me to see if they have a cd or not. This is what I expected, fantastic jump blues making me smile from ear to ear at 2 am in the morning as I search the internet looking for the sound of musical joy.I survived the 90's and all that depression and Thank God for the Max Weinberg 7 and the happiness they make people feel when they play. It's just a shame they are not the special guests on Conans show so the home viewers can hear more of them.
Solid Music From A Solid Band.......2002-11-28
I'm a huge Conan O'Brien fan, and I think that The Max Weinberg 7 are a tremendous complement to the show, so I was extremely excited to get this CD when it first came out. These guys are good at what they do, and I love it when they take part in one of the skits on Conan's show, but this CD is the first time I've listened to their music without the spectacle of the show. This was my first exposure to The Max Weinberg 7 as pure musicians, and I have to admit that I was tremendously impressed.
This is an excellent CD, especially if you're in your car on a long drive as I was when I listened to it. Their 1950s sound is sure to keep your toes tapping and your head bobbing. This album is an hour of pure entertainment. The only flaw I could find in this album was that all the songs sounded very similar to each other. While all the songs are pretty good, but the listener's enjoyment of the last track on the CD won't be as high as that of the first track, simply because it all sounds the same after a while.
The bottom line is that those who watch Late Nite with Conan O'Brien or are familiar with Max Weinberg being the drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band are sure to love this CD. Those who don't know the band are probably going to love it, too. I recommend this album.
Jumping.......2001-08-31
If you like up-beat, big band stuff, you'll like this. Max is a great drummer and is surrounded by other great musicians. You can tell they love what they are doing and aren't doing it to make money or be trendy. This cd "moves" from begining to end and will make you want to go back in time when all music was this good.
Swingin' Boogie Woogie!.......2001-06-05
It's not my type of music but for what it is it's pretty darn good. The Late Night Band takes a page out of the books of the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and the Squirrel Nut Zippers with it's mix of Boogie Woogie and Swing sounds from the 50's. The band, which traditionally focuses on more of a jazz beat demonstrates its versatility with this release. The bands ability to replicate the sound of this era is uncanny.
If you like to swing, this CD is for you!
