I heard one number on the radio and liked it, so had to get the album. Overall, it is enjoyable. It's rather relaxing, perfect to listen to after a hard day at work or as background music while doing something else at home. It borders on being ethereal, but I can always find the melody line unlike some New Age Jazz. I especially liked Highway Blues. It's rather haunting at first, but is very interesting in its development and comes to a good ending. The bass player has several solos, excellent. Drummer is very good and not overbearing. Piano and sax are equally as good. The players are well balanced between each other.

Disappointed after being spoiled by Portal. To bland for me. Wouldn't have bought if I had heard it first.

    Album Description

    Speakin' Out is the U.S. label debut as a leader for multi-instrumentalist Michael Marcus performing in his first solo recording session. On this recording, Marcus circumvents playing it safe, but nor does he utilize his extended techniques to a deliberately abstruse end. These pieces run the gamut, from frenetic to picturesque as Marcus slowly sculpts the sounds with supple phrasing and deft tonal manipulation. Marcus' playing is simultaneously abstract and complex, yet ruminative and evocative enough that even the most dark-hued motifs remain a thing of eruptive grandeur. Through it all there is an inherent warmth and poignancy to Marcus' expressive narrative, which will surely assert him as one of the superlative artisans of his craft. After all these years, Marcus is indeed Speakin' Out.
