As a founding member of the soul-jazz Crusaders, Houston-born pianist Joe Sample has been deemed a lightweight by some critics. On his first solo-piano CD, dedicated to the pioneering bandleader James Reese Europe, Sample demonstrates his jazz cred with a mastery of stride and ragtime. Save for reflective and expansive reprises of hits "Spellbound" and "Soul Shadows," Sample delves into early 20th Century pop and Tin Pan Alley standards. The supple, southern syncopations on Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" and Jelly Roll Morton's sizzling "Shreveport Stomp" offer evidence of Sample's strong left hand and the elegance of his improvisations, mixing blues feeling, Creole rhythms, and elements of the European classics.         This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine

        I'm a HUGE Joe Sample fan, but I was disappointed by this CD. It's very raw and somewhat jarring at times. If you like early / rag time jazz, this might be of interest to you. For a truly outstanding Sample experience Invitation is a must - his 1993 release which might be the finest jazz CD of the past 20 years. Other excellent outings include Old Faces, Old Places, The Pecan Tree, and Ashes to Ashes.

        Joe Sample has always been an accomplished musician, as a member of The Crudaders, or as a solo artist. However, many of his albums have been too slick for their own good, and not always cutting edge achievements. This solo piano record is just that; a stunning, cutting edge achievement. Sample takes old, worn-out material and reinvents the songs into something startlingly fresh, modern and fascinating. His stride style is reminiscent of the late Willie 'The Lion' Smith - fluent and easy, with just the right amount of swing and energy to make it totally commanding. His reworkings of warhorses like 'The Entertainer', 'It's a Sin To Tell a Lie', 'Avalon' etc bring these old standards into our time - and even further into the future. The whole disc proves that no music is too old or forever lost to the passing winds of fashion as long as somebody is willing to take it seriously and reinterpret it with the modern listener in mind.

        Yes, I too was totally shocked by Joe's departure from the
        smooth jazz/fusion/soul/r&b style that has made him a legend
        for the past 30 years or more!! However, I acquired a taste
        for his completely fresh approach to ragtime, stride, and
        early jazz classics! He is totally unpredictable in his
        arrangements and interpretations of this standards. There
        is no way you can listen and say, oh, yeah, lounge music,
        I get the idea. You may even take some time to get used to
        how he has treated these great tunes. But Joe has always
        been an original, never a copier, and he is always thoughtful
        and philosophical in his approach. I would love to see him
        perform these songs live, I know it would be entertaining!

        I have been an avid Joe Sample fan for years. I was quite delighted and astounded by this CD. It is a BIG departure from the type of music that he is known for playing. I for one enjoyed it very much. Nowadays, music of all types is so "cookie-cutterish" that it is boring. Musicians no longer dare to stray from their comfort zone or should I say the Music execs and general buying public's comfort zone.

        For me, this CD illustrates Joe Sample's true talent, creativity and genius. His rendention of Avalon is beyond words.
        I appluaded Joe Sample for taking the dare and showing us "what he is truly made of"!!!!!!! I wish that more musicians would bare their souls as Joe Sample has.

        If you have problems to fall asleep, this might be the right Cd for you. But if you like to hear Joe Sampleas you are used to him, forget it. I think he has made this record alone for his own pleasure. I only give two stars because he is Joe Sample.

        I run a Haunted House every Halloween season and this compilation will go very nicely for the queue line. Not a bad song in the bunch. There's stuff to keep people on their toes, weirded out and just plain pumped up to enter the haunt. A definite mood setter!

            Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

              This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch.
