The body of work Davis created in his 40-plus years of recording makes the word "incomparable" grossly inadequate. So, it should be no surprise that these live recordings, drawn from the last three years of his life, are nothing short of remarkable. This collection highlights Davis's funkier 80s repertoire. From the laid back groove of "Mr. Pastorius" to the driving rhythms of "Wrinkle," this was Davis redefining jazz. Even more remarkably, it was all recorded digitally in stereo with no remixes, no overdubs, and a sound so perfect that most musicians couldn't match those standards in a studio. The album's closing version of "Hannibal" was drawn from Davis's final performance, giving both the already haunting composition and the entire album an added poignancy. Jazz doesn't get much better than Davis, and live recordings don't get much better than this. --Bill Snyder

Pretty Good after All.......2007-03-27
This is an album well worth revisiting. A lot of people hated the music that Davis made at the end of his career, which is too bad. This is a fusion album basically, in a league with the best of Weather Report or Pat Metheny. It is also a lot of fun to listen to. Davis's upper range is diminished, but he remains full of fresh ideas. Unlike his Fillmore albums, this live set is accessible and clearly both the band and the audience at the various venuse have a great time. More significantly, Davis seems to be enjoying himself and his young musicians. As usual, he gives them a lot of space and Garrett with a couple of showy solos and the remarkable Foley, who transforms his bass into a lead instrument, take full advantage of their opportunities. The album is not "Kind of Blue," but it is nonetheless fine music and a worthy memento from the final stages of Davis's magnificent career.
I approached this with some unnecessary trepidation.......2007-03-04
I approached this release with much trepidation. It wasn't because I was afraid to waste my money. I'm a huge Miles enthusiast. I have a farily large collection of his recordings (about 60 discs so far) starting with every master take he recorded with Charlie Parker and ending with The Complete Cellar Door Sessions. I have most of his Columbia work up to 1975 including many of the "Complete Sessions" box sets and all of the important Prestige releases including all of the quintet recordings and the Bags' Groove session. I know Miles' and his music very well. When Miles' returned to the stage in 1981, I found I could suddenly relate to all those legacy fans that were so upset when Miles first went electric. I love Miles' music but I did not want to be disappointed with a release from his post-hiatus years. I remember how giddy I was when I spotted the Lp "The Man With The Horn". It was ok, but something wasn't quite right. Much of what I'd heard of his last decade doesn't seem to move me the way the earlier stuff does. Admittedly, that's MY problem and is in no way a reflection on the validity or quality music Miles chose to play in his last years. So, I approached with much trepidation.
With that said, I was pleasantly surprised by Live Around The World. Miles' playing is actually pretty strong; however his solos are also fairly compact for the most part. This isn't the lava-spewing Miles of The Cellar Door Sessions. His quieter, harmon-muted playing on this CD reminds me a lot of the tune "Circle" from Miles Smiles. It's still beautiful here, heartbreakingly beautiful and I'll never get tired of that sound. All the tracks are very good, but there is something missing... there's something of a sterility here and it's probably the modern (at the time) technology. Miles' band is very hot but it doesn't breath fire like the Cellar Door band. With his previous bands, almost anything could happen when Miles played live. This is much more "organized" I can't put my finger on what it is that bothers me about this release, but it's there no matter how much I don't want it to be there.
What do I like about this release is you can hear that Miles, who was long a tortured artist, is actually having a great time with his young band. I think Amandla is probably my favorite of all the tracks and it seems to hark back to an earlier time, despite those blasted synthesizers. The thing I hate about this release is all the Zawinul-esque synthesizers. If someone told me that Miles asked his close friend Joe Zawinul to serve as a consultant for the synth voicings used here, I would believe it. Then again, one has to remember that like always, Miles was playing in the moment. When this was recorded, synths were all over the place and used with abandon. Serious musicians seem to have wised up in the last 15 years. I think the problem with synths is that technology is always moving forward. What sounded really cool 2 years ago, sounds very dated. A synth will NEVER sound like a music where the timbre and attack is control by human action. They are horrible instruments and I wish they'd all just go away. I am also not particularly fond of that cover shot that makes him look like a funky extraterrestrial space man. They should have used the booklet's interior portrait shot for the cover. Miles just had so much humanity in his face.
4.5 stars on Live Around the World. I honestly can't rate this as high as My Funny Valentine, Four and More, Miles In Berlin, The Cellar Door Sessions, and It's About That Time. Those releases are the way I love to hear Miles. This is a good release but I cannot place it on the same level as his other live work, no matter how skillful and good his band plays.
Anyway, If you can handle all the synthesizers then this is an enjoyable release for those of us Miles enthusiastist who remember and know what Miles was all about from 1945 - 1975. Gosh, I sure do miss Miles. My vote for greatest American musician of the twentieth century, hands down.
Peace.
PS - the review that raves about Kenny Garrett's jaw-dropping, mind-numbing tenor sax solo... that's an alto sax man. It's a very good solo but I didn't find it THAT impressive. Frankly, Sonny Fortune's solos on Agharta and Pangea are far better than Garretts - though Garrett's IS quite good. You want impressive tenor sax? Pick up Coltrane's "Sunship" or "Meditations" Now, THAT's jaw-dropping tenor playing.
Why You Must Own This Album.......2006-11-27
Overall, this is a phenomenal album which all Miles fans ought to have. There are however, two reasons why all jazz fans, all music fans and indeed all living and breathing people who love life and love music, must buy this album. First is Kenny Garrett's mind numbing, jaw-dropping 7 minute tenor solo at the end of the 13 minute "Human Nature". I'm pretty sure there's never in the history of music been a better tenor solo than that. If there is, I can't really think of one and I've heard a lot. Coltrane doing "My Favorite Things" at Birdland, maybe - but I think Garrett wins. The first time I heard it, I had to stop what I was doing and go back and listen because I couldn't believe my ears. That was about 6 years ago and the solo has yet to get old. So awed was Miles, that at the end of the tune, you can hear him providing Garrett with the Milesque sarcastic compliment "Kenny...Kenny...That wadn't nothin' man, that wadn't nothin'...I do that every night". Yeah Miles, over the course of a long career you have many, many outstanding solos, but Garrett matched you that night and you clearly knew it.
Reason number two is the closing track "Hanibal" drawn from Miles' last live performance. In his exchanges with Garrett's sax, you can almost hear Miles' dying breaths, pleading for more life, for more air to fill his horn. It's surreal.
Buy this album. Listen and be amazed!
Miles Of Smiles For Everyone.......2006-11-12
During the last few years of his life, Miles Davis did not slow down one bit when it came to touring. It is amazing the schedule he kept as his health declined.
In many ways I feel that the fans and his band kept him going. It is as if the people who meant the most to his incredible career assisted him in those moments when it had to be utterly painful for him to take to the stage.
Take the last cut on this classic live CD - Hannibal - which was recorded at the last performance by Davis. Listen closely and you will appreciate the power of will that Davis demonstrated. His health was rapidly declining and he entered the hospital a mere couple of weeks later.
The critics were mighty silly when the studio versions of Human Nature and Time After Time were released. The theory was posed that the songs were "suggested" to Davis by a record executive. Get real, like a suit would have any pull on what Davis recorded in the studio!
Davis listened to other artists from various genres of music. He did not put up the artificial barriers that plague not only the music industry, but society as a whole. And the myth should be tossed into the gutter after hearing the songs live, especially the extended version of Time After Time.
New Blues features some sizzling playing, while Mr. Pastorius and Tutu again show Davis and the band in top form.
There are plenty of directions one can travel in attempting to chronicle the career of one of the best jazz musicians ever. It may come as a surprise to some that Live Around The World may be a great place to start, since these are the last gigs he performed.
But anyone who appreciates what the stage meant to Davis - and what Davis meant to his fans - will understand why the best from the last can be first.
It is just Essentially that you must have this album........2006-07-17
Miles's Trumpet sound is different from another's.
It's the something special.
Fusion & Jazz rock that you were heard by Miles are also same.
The album was put the perfect performance into, as if to record in the studio room using overdubbing.
Someone said that Miles's trumpet playing in this times is not good as the prime of his musical life.
It's lower-class in terms of sharpness, inspiration, mainstream than his career in the 1950- early 1970.
For sure, I "din't" agree with their opinion.
Obviously, Miles could not play like in those albums.
For example Kind Of Blue, Round about Midnight, Bitche's Brew and much more,
But he shows us what the maturity is in the Performance, let me know Miles himself just like a hard boiled egg.
Through the The tune Dedicated to Jaco Pastorius, "Mr. Pastorius", "TUTU", "Human Nature", and at almost every track,
Miles was playing for us a great master's sound touch.
All together cold and warm moods.
At the particular track "Time After Time", Miles was singing a love song like a great singer. And I never heard another version of "Time After Time", better than for Miles, not forgetting Cyndy Lauper who had sung "Time After Time" with a lyric from the first.
Sometimes, Miles let me cry at the "Time After Time".
If you din't like Jazz Music or your fondness is rock music or another fields, you would not need any question,
like "Is this album appropriate to me?"
Don't worry, Just Listen.
Miles can satisfy your pleasure.

Those who've experienced Habib Koité & Bamada will recall a hot set with the energetic leader playing to the crowd and his own musicians. Recording three studio albums since 1995, the singer/guitarist now returns with a live double-disc collection recorded during a 2002 European tour. There are no unreleased songs included, but Koité and his crack band take many of these tunes past the 10-minute mark, displaying a loose live chemistry that is dazzling, particularly on the 16-minute "Kunfeta," where each band member is introduced. Incorporating a breadth of Malian musical traditions, the group's sound emphasizes Koité's acoustic guitar, percussion (particularly Kélétigui Diabaté's balafon playing), and vocals. These are intricately woven together into a shimmying West African groove. Leaving the fireworks to fellow musicians and his own guitar work, Koité's voice is understated by Malian standards, simmering with wistful emotion. This is truly a fine document of the great group's transcendent live shows. --Tad Hendrickson

How good is music?.......2007-04-09
For me it's hard to be objective (not that that's really the point) after hearing these guys live. I first heard them in 97 at the New Orleans Jazz Fest having no idea who they were and was completely blown away. I've never been less than thrilled hearing them subsequently. Fortunately they've played Minneapolis/St. Paul several times in the last few years and I've heard them all. This is one of the great live bands on earth and this recording is testament to that. I'm hard pressed to think of any CDs I've listened to more in the last couple of years than this. My friend and I have bootlegged the Habib shows we've gone to and I love listening to those recordings, but this recording is the best of a whole tour and is consistently great. This is the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East or Monk/Trane at Carnegie Hall of African music. This band is so tight, so versatile and the songs are a beautiful array of an ancient/modern blend of Malian music.
I love live music, go to tons of shows and tend towards jazz these days, but I'm hard pressed to think of anybody I'd go hear rather than this band on a particular night if given the choice and this recording captures as well as recording can why that is.
Koite' Live!.......2006-08-16
I got this after hearing Putamayo's "Mali"; Koite is on that one twice. What a great choice. Taken from several live performances, this set of CD's shows that the rich complexity of his music, his singing, and the musicianship is wonderful. It makes me happy when I am driving, even when the traffic is bad.
amazing.......2006-02-06
I didn't appreciate Habib et al when I first heard them on a compilation. However, I had the opportunity to see the band live a few years ago. I was blown away. I have never seen such enegry on a stage, especially by the drummers. This album captures the brilliance and dynamic nature of a very impressive and underrated group. It's the next best thing to seeing them live.
Awesome!!.......2005-09-03
This is on my fav rotation now. Heard about Habib Koite on a UK internet radio show and have been hooked ever since. Muso Ko is my favorite.
Like Bells Ringing.......2005-08-14
This is music from the sky. The whole band comes together to play melodies that just make you happy, or make you want to get up and dance or move around. Very joyous music. Little drops of sunshine all around as you listen - really fine tunes. Beautiful!

Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.
Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18
In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

Album Description
Allow us to take a bit more space than we usually would for one recording, as it is a recording we not only feel will be critically acclaimed, but is also one of great importance in its origin and purpose...
The artist community out of Colorado Springs known as "Blue Renaissance Creative Group" is a non-profit organization which consists of the folk ensemble 100 Portraits, acoustic fusion band Calling Cedar, and several other independent artists, all holding a global vision for reaching the lost through music. They evolved organically apart from the music industry as an expression of the Body of Christ from this generation. They brought us the Enter The Worship Circle recording last year, something they threw together to document their worship time together. Astonishingly, that rough recording captured in a make-shift studio in an old house has sold over 70,000 copies.
Without much change, and paying little attention to the success of the previous recording, 100 Portraits, joined by other Blue Renaissance artists as well as Will Hunt of Apt.core, returns with more of their original and down to earth worship-oriented songs... this time with the same name, simply being distinguished by the sub-title Second Circle. Several of the folks from Blue Renaissance have often traveled to third world countries to share their talents in the outreach efforts of indigenous churches. In recent visits to India, they were inspired by the native instruments and songs found among the village churches, and in fact documented some of the sounds they encountered, mixing select portions of those samples into the new recording.
Driving Indian rhythms intertwine with fresh, intimate, uninhibited expressions of love and worship to create this ground-breaking album, using instruments such as tablas, dumbeks, an amazing sitar, and who knows what else. With all original songwriting, even a few seemingly improv lyrical inspirations captured during the live studio recording, Second Circle allows you to join the musicians in their realization of how deep, wide, and amazing the love of God is. This collection of passionate songs reflects a desire for simplicity and spontaneity in worship, with its use of basic instruments and genuine expression. Hand percussion and acoustic guitars, simple arrangements, and a new world of looping-rhythm sections blend throughout every track creating a beautiful tapestry. Blue Renaissance is designating a dollar from each sale to go to Christian orphanages and schools in India-- one US dollar is the equivalent of an entire day's wages in India.
Every once in a while something truly different comes forth from creative wombs by the grace of God, with power enough to change the way you think about music, worship, life... this is that something. We give it our strongest recommendation.

great for entering in to worship and His presence.......2007-05-26
This CD is really great and deep in worship for our Lord. It really helped to awaken and engage my heart in Jesus and His love. I really treasure the times I've been able to spend just listening to this cd in my room + worshiping Him. Of all of my favorite worship albums, this is one of the best I've yet heard. Some other great ones like this are "The World Can Wait" by the Merchant Band, Misty Edward's cd's, "I Can't Wait" by Various Artists (might only be available at ihop.org), the WOW greatest Worship songs, and "Worship" by Micheal W. Smith.
crying worship.......2004-02-25
this album has been such a blessing to me! the songs on this cd are so prayerful, thankful, meditative and heartfelt! for anyone in need of pure worship in tears to God, this is it.
Not one to pass up........2003-11-29
When I first purchased this cd off of Amazon, I was already familiar with the first circle. I had actually bought this cd for a friend of mine for her birthday. a little later, I got a chance to listen to the same songs and borrow the cd in depth. (Ok, I admit it, she burned it for me.)
Were my expectations high? Yep. Were my expectations met?
Oh yeah.
It's really hard to write a review on a worship cd, because a worship cd is either kinda dull, and you like the sound of the songs, but you dont really get anything out of it, or it blows you away. And I have to say, that the songs on this cd have blown me away, and brought me to a deeper level of worship. (If any of you gifted people who helped produce this cd are reading this, then thank you for moving in the spirit.) But, I wanted to write a short review for those of you who may be interested in this but are not sure.
The cd starts off in much of the same style as the first circle with the song I Will Bow. the first 6 tracks on this cd are incredibly powerful words that are spoken directly to God. Especially, in my opinion, Near to you, and Faithful. Rush River Rush, and Praise Awaits You, (Tracks 7 and 8) are incredible worship songs. Lost Art of Living was a bit of a culture shock to me at first. It's style is actually more eastern. But its really a cool song/poem. The rest of the songs are awesome, and I had to dance to All I Need, and I Cannot Hide My Love.
The style of the music is hard to describe for me. If you just wont listen to music without heavy guitar or drums, then you wouldnt enjoy this cd for its musical value, although there are some sweet guitar chords and combinations in here. Most of the stuff is soft, and even the faster songs are very rythmic. but if your just looking for an awesome cd to worship God to, then I would recommend this to you as a valuable treasure, and an excellent addition or start to your worship collection.

A Fantastic Representation Of Meat Loaf In Concert........2007-01-08
Though he's been chided by the press as being bombastic and over the top, Meat Loaf is still one of the most energetic and talented perfomers in the music world. His album "Bat Out Of Hell" is widely regarded as one of the finest rock albums ever recorded, and he still remains a top selling live act.
"Live Around The World" is a 2 cd compilation of Meat Loaf in conccert from 1977 to 1976, and while having such a vast range of time between shows can often throw of the continuity aspect, it's still a great, great collection of Meat Loaf in concert.
All of The Meat's biggest hits are here, including "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)", a sizzling rendition of his signature hit "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" (Patti Russo is no Ellen Foley, but she makes a fine replacement on this as well as for Cher on "Dead Ringer For Love"), "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" and "Bat Out Of Hell". In fact, he does all of the songs from the "Bat Out Of Hell" album, and also dusts off some lesser known gems. One espeically great treat is "Hot Patootie (Whatever Happened To Saturday Night)", which he performed when he played Eddie in the 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
The sound quality is great, and the pacakging is overall the good, though the liner notes are sorely lacking. Overall, this is a great addition to your collection.
to operatic.......2006-10-05
Ill make it short......The selection of songs and musicianship is great. but Meat Loaf's voice is just ridiculous, almost comical. he sings like a bad opera singer and has entirely too much falsetto in his voice. Songs like bat Out Of hell are nearly ruined by his overly falsetic voice.

Meat Lives Up to Expectations - but some minor quirks with the assembly.......2005-10-10
One can easily make the argument that Meat Loaf's career is intertwined with songwriter Jim Steinman. Meat Loaf has enjoyed his greatest success when he has teamed up with Steinman. "Bat Out of Hell" and "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell" are considered two of the all-time legendary albums. For all practical purposes, these albums are Rock Operas (or commonly referred to as Wagnerian Rock). The concepts for these two albums basically revolved around the thoughts and stories of a teenage and young adult male. One thing that really made the "Bat Out of Hell" albums special was the combination of Steinman's songwriting with Meat Loaf's powerful and passionate vocals. Both Meat and Steinman come from a theatrical background - and both Steinman's music and Meat's vocals are clearly a product of this background. I think its safe to say that Steinman provides the infrastructure for Meat to deliver these powerful vocals while Meat's vocals make Steinman's music come alive. It is this style of music that almost seems tailor-made for being heard live - and the collection "Live Around the World" gives Meat Loaf fans a chance to hear what this music sounds like in a live setting. Despite some minor quirks, this collection does not disappoint.
The content of the performances is of a high level. When I review a live album, I usually prefer the album to basically be a full recording of a concert. In other words, I prefer the tracks come a single night's performance and be arranged in the order that they were played in concert. I normally am not one for edited concerts or live compilations. In the case of Meat Loaf's "Live Around the World", the tracks are a mixed bag. This compilation is basically an anthology of Meat's greatest live performances from 1977 through 1996. Because this is the way this album has been put together, this album cannot be used as a gauge for the what a Meat Loaf concert really sounds like. However, the album does attempt job to arrange the songs to give a perception that this could be a Meat Loaf concert. The ordering of the songs is done well, but I can't say this is done perfectly. For example, while "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" is the last song on the first CD, I probably would have made it the last song overall. I do give the album credit for flowing one song into another nicely - creating the "illusion" that this is a live show. While I understand when putting this album together, bringing together an anthology of Meat's live performances seemed like a good idea - I think it would have been better to assemble a CD of one or two actual concerts (The Police's "Live" album basically did this). Yes these are quirks that do bother me about this collection, but it doesn't take away from the content - this is some really good stuff. Meat's performances live up to the high expectations I had for this collection.
As one would expect, most of the performances included on "Live Around the World" come from "Bat Out of Hell" and "Bat Out of Hell II". In fact, all seven songs from "Bat Out of Hell" are included on here. There are seven songs that are included from "Bat Out of Hell II". I am pleased that there are four songs beyond "Bat Out of Hell" that are included. These songs are "Dead Ringer for Love" (from "Dead Ringer"); "Midnight at the Lost and Found" (from "Midnight at the Lost and Found"), as well as "What You See is What You Get" and "Hot Patootie". The nice thing is that Meat shows that his career wasn't just limited to the "Bat Out of Hell" albums - he does a terrific job on these four songs. The one Meat Loaf song that isn't included on this collection is "Everything Louder than Everything Else". This is a terrific song in the true Steinman-Theatrical sense. This is especially disappointing since the prelude to that song, Steinman's spoken "Wasted Youth" is included on this collection.
As mentioned, the performances are incredible. You can hear Meat's passion on every song. Every song is truly a performance. Meat handles co-producing duties for this collection. While Steinman and Todd Rundgren were give a lot of credit for producing Meat in the past, Meat proves he can produce and deliver the product. I was very pleased the full 12 minute version of "I Would Do Anything for Love" kicks off the collection. "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" lives up to my live performance expectations. It is a much longer version than the studio version. Although Ellen Foley isn't doing the co-vocals, Patricia Russo does a great job as "girl". There is an extended dialogue at the end that really makes this a true performance. Russo handles the lion's share of the female lead vocals on this collection. The performance of "Dead Ringer" is very much up there as well - much thanks to Russo's lead vocals. Russo's performance even eclipses what Cher did on this song. Russo also does a great job on "I Would Do Anything for Love" on the vocal exchange that occurs at the end of the song.
One thing that does disappoint are the liner notes. The liner notes do list each of the tracks and the location from which each was recorded. The one thing that isn't included are the dates of the performances. I think for this particular style CD, it would have gone a long way to include the performance dates. As for the musician credits, I would have also liked to have seen each musician's credit listed aligned with each song - insread they are all listed in one place. Overall, if you are a Meat Loaf fan and crave for his level performances in a live setting - this is the CD to get. Highly recommended.

I think this/these cd/cds is the best because Meat Loaf is the best singer and he preforms the songs really well and I think he got it going on with those songs he sings

One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

More of a souvenir for the converted than an enticement to the uninitiated, Live Around the World is a double-disc dosage of Vital Information, the jazz-rock vehicle that former Journey drummer Steve Smith has cultivated since the early 1980s. Recorded in club-sized venues in Sydney, Toronto, Chicago, and Amsterdam, the group leans on jazz and traces of R&B as its principal benchmarks, bringing to mind an evolved, slightly edgier Chick Corea Elektric Band minus Eric Marienthal on saxophone--no surprise, really, given guitarist Frank Gambale's in both units.
The four-man Vital Information's selections are regularly sweetened by the Hammond B-3 and accordion of former Santana keyboardist Tom Coster (bassist Baron Browne rounds out the foursome, replacing Jeff Andrews). Coster, in fact, is the primary instrumental focus of many selections and even contributes a subdued accordion version of his Santana hit, "Europa." The group's clever take on Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" surfaces here as an energetic fingerpainting exercise by Browne (supplemented by a soulful Hammond rave-up by Coster) before the tune becomes recognizable in its final 45 seconds--without a single Bonhamesque workout on drums from Smith. Several selections are attractively performed ("Swamp Stomp" and "First Thing This Morning" are treats), though the group never fully catches fire (Gambale in particular) until the 15th track, "Over and Out," the closest the band gets to full-throttle fusion on this package. Interesting; not overpowering. --Terry Wood

3 & 1/2 stars for me.......2003-08-25
When this record came out I immediatly bought it without thinking it twice. I am a Jazz/fusion enthusiast so Vital Information is one of the bands in my map. The album has some strong points but also some weaknesses. I appreciate Gambale' s playing and the exceptional musicianship from all the guys. Coster is such a talent! His musicality is nothing less than amazing. But in the end this album is really not that much in my opinion. Apart from Europa (here in a splendid accordion version), twe two minor blues Mr P.C. (Coltrane) and the Jazzy Moby Dick (Led Zeppelin), Take eight and few other moments I'm not completly satisfied with the music. It's too flat. These guys can do a lot better than this in my opinion. Probably is the material that does not shine. Where we come from was not their best album for I am concerned and this live is almost completly based on that material. In the end this double live is a little disappointing. I still prefer Uzeb live '90 which in my opinion still eats this live in a single bite. Anyway sometimes I enjoy listen to this album but it's a little less than what I was expecting from such tremendously gifted players.
Just Listen To This.......2002-02-27
"Live Around The World We Come From" is a double CD that captures Steve Smith's Vital Information in concert. This is the second time that Vital Info has been recorded live and is the better of the two. The band performs all types of music: The Creole influenced "Swamp Stomp", the Jazz of Ornette Coleman's "Happy House", the atonal romp that is "Cranial Jam" are all a part of this eclectic mix. Some highlights from the first disc are a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick". The center piece of this version is the Baron and not the drumming of Smith. The other members of the band follow Baron's bass lines and improvise over them. The end result is a very different sound than the one that Zeppelin originated. "First Thing This Morning" is another great tune and is one of Frank Gambale's best compostions. Frank has always been an amazing guitarist but this song demonstrates that he has made leaps in the composition side of being a complete musician. The song itself has a catchy melody and the band is brilliant throughout. The end of the piece has Baron and Steve improvising around the song's groove and is simply awesome. The second disc has a couple of show stoppers as well. "Over and Out " is a showcase for Mr. Gambale's impressive sweepicking technique and should amaze most guitarists. The often covered John Coltrane masterwork "Mr. P.C." is the last live song on the disc and also the most blistering. Tom Coster has an amazing hammond solo and Gambale picks up the baton and runs with it. The song then has Gambale, Coster and Smith trade fours until Steve Smith performs a jaw dropping drum solo that will knock some paintings off of your walls. Also incuded on these discs are a couple of studio songs that are also very good and may provide a hint of things to come. Vital Information is one of the, and to some the, best Fusion bands currently touring. Buy this and see why for yourself. Highly recommended.
it's almost like being there.............2000-10-09
this a wonderful reminder of seeing the band in lovely buffalo n.y. at the tralfamadore two marches ago or so. one of the things that makes this even better is the extra bonus studio cuts included within, soulful drums originally recorded by joe dukes on jack mcduffs screamin'. it's kind of an update and just as greasy, highly recommended. the other big highlight for me is steve's solo on mr.pc, a textbook of keeping the form and blowing over the changes. do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you'll be glad you did. then play it for a friend who also loves great music, he'll owe you one.....

Album Description
"For dulcimer fans there's a lot of pure dulcimer here- dulcimers of all shapes, sizes and timbres- ranging from the wonderful high registers of the ginger dulcimer to the full throaty sound of the bass dulcimer. For Kevin Roth fans, there's pure Kevin here, including the magical dulcimer arrangements and the wonderful vocals fans have come to expect..
If this is your first introduction to Kevins' music, I'll just say that Kevin recorded his first lp for Folkways records in 1974 when he was 16. This introduced his unique and innovative style of mountain dulcimer playing and singing to the folk fans of the 70's. Since then he has recorded over 30 albums of music for adults and children to rave reviews, and is one of a few who literally saved the dulcimer from obsurity. He's played just about every major dulcimer and folk festival on the planet and continues making great music every chance he gets.If any of your friends ask you what a dulcimer is, the definition is the CD you hold in your hand"

Incredible.......2007-05-12
I play a ducimer and have assumed that I was competent at finger picking, but Kevin Roth goes beyond anything I have ever heard on the dulcimer. Such precise, sensitive playing! His traditional stumming is excellent as is his singing.
