Here's a soulful tenor saxophonist navigating a familiar set of standards, ballads, and uptempo bop. But on Jazz Signatures, Scott Hamilton always sounds fresh and inspired--he never phones it in. From the opening "Raincheck," to Hank Jones's bittersweet "Angel Face," Hamilton makes swinging easy a breeze. He captures the grace of Johnny Hodges and Zoot Sims and revels in the luster of an agile combo who match his every move with an effortless swing that would've made Frank Sinatra dance a jig. Along the way, we get Latinized with Fats Waller's rambunctious "Jitterbug Waltz" and Don Byas's "Byas a Drink," go bebopping with "Move," and groove the Cali-strut on Benny Carter's "When Lights Are Low." Hamilton's ballad playing is equally sensuous, sounding devil-may-care on "If You Could See Me Now" and playful on Illinois Jacquet's "You Left Me All Alone." But it is on Jones's "Angel Face" that Hamilton is at his most moving, framing the 2 a.m. melody as a soaring cry of remorse and regret, tempered with a nod to tomorrow, and rebirth. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars "shades of Sims, Webster & Young...Scott Hamilton!".......2001-06-18

You could define Scott Hamilton, as mainstream, blues, soul, swing, dixieland or progressive in this genre known as "Jazz"...but you'd be missing the whole point and purpose of this very talented tenor saxophone player, with shades of Ben Webster, Zoot Sims and Lester Young...Hamilton can adapt to any assignment or mood that needs to be applied...so long as his audience enjoy themselves, in that vain he is spectacular.

This CD is no exception, the entire ten tracks are worthy of your attention, each tune has a life of its own, as Scott takes you on another musical journey. Thanks to Concord, Glen Barros and John Burk (executive producers)...you can spin this CD, sit back and enjoy this immensely gifted musician ~ SCOTT HAMILTON!

Enjoy other albums worthy of a good listen by Scott Hamilton on Concord ~ "Ballad Essentials" (CCD-4819-2), "After Hours" (CCD-4755), "My Romance" (CCD-4710)...check out my reviews on amazon.com/music.

5 out of 5 stars Scott Hamilton -- Mr. Consistency.......2001-04-30

Scott has come up with a beauty of a CD this time around . With a very sympathetic and swinging trio to back him up (led by the underrated John Bunch), Scott's beautiful sound is never more in evidence than on this new recording. In addition , there is a jaw-dropping, gorgeous version of "If You Could See Me Now" that will leave you stunned. And there is a hot, swinging take on "Move" that cooks from start to finish. Scott is inspired and extremely confident throughout. This is definitely a highpoint in his recording career with Concord. Get this and listen to the living embodiment of taste , swing and elegance.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hamilton Hit!.......2001-04-05

It's becoming obvious that tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton only records outstanding CDs, and Concord Records is quick to get them to market. "Jazz Signatures" features Hamilton, pianist John Bunch, bassist Dave Green and drummer Steve Brown on 10 tunes by jazz greats Billy Strayhorn, Dave Brubeck, Fats Waller, Tadd Dameron, Denzil Best, Don Byas, Illinois Jacquet, Benny Carter and Hank Jones. The 10th song is by Bunch, whose piano skills almost overshadow Hamilton's efforts at several points on the CD. This is an excellent effort, offering nearly an hour of fine jazz, in the continuing streak of Hamilton hits for Concord.

With material from 1946 to 1991, this handsome box set reveals the enormous breadth of Brubeck's interests, accomplishments, and collaborations. There are tracks, for example, with Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rushing, Gerry Mulligan, and Carmen McRae. There's even a duo with Charles Mingus. Also here is the full range of Brubeck's studied structures, involved harmonies, and elements unusual to jazz, including expansive time signatures and the use of fugue form and 12-tone theory. Included, of course, are such signature hits as "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five." Brubeck came up playing hillbilly, swing, and Dixieland, and at college studied modern composition. All of that--and little constraint--informed his complex, idiosyncratic style. The package includes an 80-page booklet with his biography, rare photographs, and descriptions of every track. --Peter Monaghan

Album Description

Twelve-year-old Matt Savage showcases his burgeoning talent in this outstanding CD. As both composer and artist, he infuses youthful exuberance and "old soul" experience into every tune. The name of this CD proclaims the dual significance of the music contained within. Not only is Matt "cutting loose" from childhood, but he cuts loose in the jazz sense, exploring a wide range of styles and just going all out. The studio-recorded CD begins with a jazzy tune entitled, `Infected with Hemiola' and ends with a playful `Ladybug Bounce.' "Don't worry. Hemiola is not a disease. It's just a musical term meaning that you play phrases from one time signature when you're actually in another," states Matt in the CD's liner notes. Thus begins a wild journey through musically complex twists and turns. A 5/4 blues, a 7/4 toe-tap, a stealthy "Pink Panther"-ish tune, a swing tune and haunting ballads pause just long enough to squeeze in a waltz for mom. Of course, no Matt Savage Trio CD would be complete without a couple of fast-paced flag-wavers to send your socks flying. There are even a few "edgy" jazz tunes unlike anything you've ever heard. Matt wrote all fourteen of the tunes on this CD, and the range of his imagination and compositional skills is limitless. Bursting with intricate time signatures, intoxicating ballads and flat-out fun, this CD will captivate you from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Prodigious, Playful, and Positively Profound.......2004-09-22

I own this CD [and all of Matt Savage's CDs]. Regarding this specific CD, let me say that this is not just "CD no.4" since the Matt Savage Trio was officialy organized, but this recording is a witness to the flowering of legitimate genius.
I refer to Matt Savage, of course. For example : due to the profound and yet simple memody found in Matt Savage's own tune, Plain Old Rhythm Changes, that chart will undoubtedly become a jazz standard. The melody starts out RIGHT on the bar and is in a lively four-four and hums along with the brightness of a vintage Henry Mancini tune. It is original and yet is consumate toe-tapping jazz! But let me say that this recording showcases not only Matt but also his superb bass-player John Funkhouser, and adroit drummer Steve Silverstein.
Technically, this recording offers VERY satisfying TONAL balance and detail imaging. A good class-A or AB system will only put this Jazz Trio RIGHT into your living-room! Rich!!

Let me elaborate on 2 more of this CD's tunes : Matt Savage's Nine At Night is a largo-tempo piece that is not only placid, but as cozy as hot British Tea and Belgian chocolate on a cold winter night. I MUST drink a cup when I hear this song, and in the same tradition is another Matt Savage tune, The Wild Rose. This tune is not only languid, but whose "concert harp-like" opening is prelude to a tune so powerfully romantic and lush that only a boor could fail to appreciate its powerful musical genius. Again, do we get the message here? Simple and yet Profound! That is the heart of this CD's genius ... and Matt Savage's genius. I cannot get enough of this CD--a true witness of a Mozartian genius in its formative flower!

5 out of 5 stars Matt Savage Trio's "Cutting Loose" is like..........2004-09-14

Matt Savage Trio's "Cutting Loose" is like a great new dish at a favored restaurant you know won't ever disappoint you; it's like a wild new ride down a favorite road with all new scenery and total confidence in your driver; cotton candy in Winter [?]; a favorite warm jacket that you would wear all year round if possible and might wear all year anyway.

That should cover the gushing superlatives [for now] and so onto a light technical review. See my reviews of Matt Savage Trio's other releases for more "Wow" coverage.

This is the sixth disc recorded by Matt Savage and the fourth with his Trio buddies Mssrs. Silverstein [skins] and Funkhouser [bass]. The first two discs [basically out of print] are small works of a budding artist and include some spoken word as well. The Trio works [live and studio] are tight and wonderfully executed recordings which document the growth of Matt as a performer / composer and the group as a working Jazz Powerhouse.

Recorded on a single day in July of 2004, "Cutting Loose" is the most expansive of the Trio's work to date and more varied in style and manner that anything yet released from the House of Savage. It contains the informative and warm liner notes that mark all Savage Records releases as a loving and personal "handcraft" items.

"Cutting Loose" is the first disc from the Trio that is solely Matt Savage compositions and this is a good thing. His playing skill is already firmly established and, all respect to the Masters of the past, his composition skill is producing works that can stand beside ANYTHING crafted for the crazy 88 to date, by anyone, anywhere, ever.

Yeah folks, he is "that" good and the Trio is "that" tight.

The Matt Savage Trio is creating jazz standards for this age and it's leader / composer is [say it with me] Twelve Years Old... hang on to your hats and coats people because this powerful and wildly colored jazz ride is only going to get more fun and interesting with each new disc / work / performance.

Lots of things can be said of Matt Savage - but here is the one that counts: He is a super talented piano player and composer with a great Trio setup going on and you should hear it.

Should you be fortunate enough to catch a live show, by all means do so.

    Album Description

Curvature's new release, Around About Now, is a dynamic collection of smokin' tunes - definitely Curvature at their most gregarious. Produced by Jack West with generous assistance from Lee Townsend, Curvature's fifth CD showcases seven of West's new compositions presented by the ensemble on unusual and wonderful instrumentation. Around About Now integrates West's unique take on acoustic jazz and blues with elements of country, electronic music, hip/hop and gospel brought in by the ensemble. Featuring Jack West on 8-string acoustic guitar, Joel Davel on electronic marimba, David Phillips on 14-string pedal steel, and drummer Darian Gray. These world-class musicians have developed masterful improvisational techniques and tight ensemble timing. Although West is hesitant to categorize his music, he defines it as "modern American music by a musician from Georgia that's living in the diverse cultural landscape of California." Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area has allowed Jack! to experiment with unusual combinations of instruments that give shape to his compositions and have helped him develop his style. It has also given him a chance to work with a slew of top Bay Area artists: Mike Marshall, Calder Spanier (formerly with Charlie Hunter Quartet), Scott Amendola, Jon Evans, George Brooks (Zakir Hussain's Rhythm Experience), Jenny Scheinman, Mark Summer (Turtle Island String Quartet), and many others.

I admit it, this is a good collection of Brubeck's works through the years, but it is not worth it. Just buy every album seperately. You'll be better off that way. This album is just a scam so someone can make a few bucks off it!!

5 out of 5 stars Its All Here!.......2002-12-21

A remarkable collection of personal choices by Brubeck spanning the years, 1947-91. Brubeck has left a rich legacy, which he continues to add to. So many memorable performances on these 4 CD's, from little gems like "Non-Sectarian Blues," which he performed with Charles Mingus, to timeless classics like "Blue Rondo A La Turk." The booklet provides a wonderful retrospective of Brubeck's career. He remains one of the great jazz ambassadors of America. What has always impressed me about Brubeck is how freely he adopts so many currents in his music, and defers to the greats like Louis Armstrong on "The Real Ambassador." A collection that will satisfy any fan of Brubeck and at a price that is simply irresistible.

          5 out of 5 stars Classic Brubeck.......2002-07-16

This 4-cd collection was superb. Every track encompassed Brubeck's style beautifully, as they were selected by Brubeck himself. I loved the incorporations of international music as well, with influences from Japan, Turkey, and several other countries. Of course, great classics like the 5/4 time "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo A La Turk" were included. Also, Brubeck's commentary in the booklet after each song is extermely fascinating, providing a rare glimpse into how musicians create their work. Lastly, the biography at the end was filled with funny anecdotes, and an interesting perspective on Brubeck's life. Great photos, too. I would strongly recommend this collection to someone starting out with jazz;it is a timeless compelation.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Brubeck.......2000-06-30

I must have at least 30 Brubeck CDs and I've listened to him for over 40 years. Yet with all of this history I learned more about Brubeck the man and heard more of Brubeck the musician with this album than all the rest combined, including the live performances I attended at the Newport Jazz festival and Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in NYC. For this box set is complete in telling in music and words the sounds and people that the letters "B - r - u - b - e - c - k" evoke in my mind and I'm sure in the minds of countless others. The album spans many years, styles and groups. But this is only half of it. Dave personally explains in the booklet of liner notes that is an integral part of this wonderful set something about every cut in this set. It is more than just some of the best most authentic jazz ever created and played. It is a history of the medium played and written by one of the true giants of our time. After listening to it non-stop through one afternoon and evening my only wish was that it would go on for additional hours and that Dave would go on writing more for me to read. Bravo Brubeck!
