For some of guitarist John Scofield's fans, his best albums date come from the 1980s: Electric Outlet and Still Warm. Recorded before his fusion ascendancy with drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Gary Grainger, these albums are primal and funky, yet also allude to the eerie tonal palettes of Scofield's onetime employer Miles Davis during the trumpeter's 1970s electric period. On Bump, Sco's world is weird again. Joined by members of esoteric underground Manhattan bands such as Sex Mob, Soul Coughing, and Deep Banana Blackout, Sco gets down and dirty, playing some terrifically raunchy guitar. Funky New Orleans rhythms fill "Beep Beep" and the Meters-ish "Kelpers." Grits and gravy get slathered on "Three Sisters," and ethereal tone tableaus impregnate "Fez" and the acoustic "Kilgeffen." Soul Godfather James Brown is also given his rightful due on the scalding groove number "Drop and Roll." Though his guitar style is now as recognizable as any current voice in jazz, John Scofield continues to challenge and redefine himself. --Ken Micallef

From Jazziz
John Scofield's "Bump," continues in the soulful groove of the guitarist's previous recording, "A Go Go." Where "A Go Go" found Sco jamming with "Medeski, Martin & Wood," "Bump" mixes things up - here, he is joined by an alternating cast, including "MMW's" bassist Chris Wood, "Sex Mob's" bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen, "Soul Coughing's" keyboardist Mark De Gli Antoni, and Latin percussionist Johnny Almendra. Sco says "Bump" is even more of a departure from his fusion days than "A Go Go" was. "I wanted even more of a funk feel," he says.

Top jazz recording by stellar jazz performer/composer who blazes new trails while paying homage to those who came before him. As good a CD as you will find .
Not commercial but ever so good!

2 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS SO COOL!.......2004-07-19

Sorry to say this has been my first real exposure consciously to Ben Sidran. I disc jockey at a Jazz Station near Portland, Oregon. This album appeared on our new release shelf several weeks ago. I played a couple of tracks on the air and went out and purchased a copy for my collection. It blew me away. This group of musicians are happenin' and the genius of Ben Sidran on this production is evident. The philosophic and lyrical voice clips worked in with the music are perfect. You want to join in with the rhythmic dialogue. The liner notes are a little sparse. The music is a groove through all 10 tracks. By the nature of programming music for air play, it is hard for me to listen straight through a whole album but with this album, I Loved it from "Little Sherry" to the cute female voice that almost sounds like she is smiling as she say's "Nick's Bump" on the last track. There is a bit of contrast from track to track so it never bores you. Check out this album, this is a great team of Musicians. Tim Taylor, KMHD 89.1 Please Note, 2 stars was a mistake, I intended 5 stars which it is.
