As a teenager, Joe Henderson caught the tail-end of the big-band era in the '50s and became enthralled in particular with the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Gil Evans' work with Miles Davis. Even though Henderson started recording in 1963, when jazz-orchestra opportunities had become rare, it's a shock to learn that Joe Henderson Big Band is the saxophonist's first-ever album with a large ensemble. Far from being a nostalgic look back at the days of Basie and Ellington, however, it's a modernist project that suggests where Kenton's and Evans' innovations might have led if the economic bottom hadn't dropped out of the big-band genre. --Geoffrey Himes

While the cocktail lounge fad has seen more than a few musicians climb aboard as a career move, the members of Pink Martini are no bandwagon-riding aficionados. Fronted by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini is the real article--a band that approaches the music with unwavering seriousness yet never forgets the fun at the heart of it. Sympathique, the band's debut album reveals an incredibly diverse musical vocabulary on the part of frontman Lauderdale. And what singer China Forbes lacks in range and dynamics, she more than compensates for in attack, approach, and a clear understanding of the material. While most of the songs are upbeat, in the hands of Lauderdale and Forbes, "Qué será será," with its dark atmospherics should be rechristened "Qué será noir." --Wayne Pernu

All the World's a Lounge.......2007-07-10
Pink Martini,an eclectic lounge orchestra, can credit both Boston,Massachusetts (a.k.a Beantown) and Portland,Oregon (a.k.a. the City of Roses),as well as Pacific Northwest politics, for its existence. Originally, bandleader Thomas Lauderdale formed it to perform at benefits to combat the ultra-conservative Oregon Citizens Alliance' quixotic anti-gay rights measures on the ballots. Despite its political origins, Pink Martini has grown into being "Portland's House Band", encompassing a wide range of styles and fans.
Pink Martini's debut album,"Sympathique",is now a decade old,and still vibrant. The opening,"Amado Mio",sounds like a perfect song for an Italian restaurant with a Chianti bottle on the table. "No Hay Problema" and "Andalucia" are both tapas-like instrumentals;while the latter is definitely Spanish, the former is Latin sounding. The selections "Song of the Black Lizard" and "Never on Sunday" add the savory musical flavors of Japan and Greece to the mix. "Que Sera Sera" is an amazing piece of black comedy;it would've been perfect for Vincenzo Natali's vampire sequence in "Paris Je T'Aime" (in which a beautiful Gallic vampire lady ends up with a geek) because China Forbes sings with delicious irony. "Brazil" is a glorious sun-baked ode to that country (and the choir isn't intrusive) "Sympathique" is all-American nouvelle chanson, and "Lullabye" is the lilting wordless version of it.
"Sympathique" is full of fun,toe-tapping music. It's perfect for a cocktail party!
Boring & Inoffensive.......2007-07-02
Obviously a lot of people like this CD, but I am not one of them. It has a couple of songs that are nice, but for me it is mostly a wide variety of reasonably boring and inoffensive music... not bad (except for "Que Sera, Sera" which I don't like with the exception of Sly Stone's version), but nothing to very captivating either.
Incredible.......2007-06-24
Pink Martini put on an excellent show here recently in Cleveland, Ohio.
It was such a delight. I recommend all fans to enjoy their latest release Eugene.
Precocious.......2007-06-18
The famous first album of this exceptionally talented Harvard-by-way-of-Portland band shows all the hallmarks of precociousness. The orchestrations are exceptionally musically accomplished and witty, and the cosmopolitan tone is amusing and intelligently achieved. When they get it right, as they do for about 80% of their songs (most notably a sensational Chopin-inspired fantasy called "La Soledad"), they knock it out of the ball park. There are a few numbers that do seem to be trying too hard, such as a dark and purposefully off-key rendition of "Que Sera Sera" that tries to do for Doris Day what "La Valse" did for Johann Strauss; but this is a maiden effort, and allowances should be made for the artists trying to feel their way into their singular style. The band's lead singer China Forbes does not here have the kind of control over her voice she would later develop, although she still sounds powerful and arresting; impresario and arranger Thomas Lauderdale's efforts, on the other hand, had already reached their dazzling level of confidence and sophistication.
Pink Martini, sympathique.......2007-05-17
An ecletic range of sounds that make one of my favorite work CD's. A bit jazzy and upbeat, and interesting. Highly recommended in the right place.

Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston) has a new discovery in the wake of a very successful young find Josh Groban. Michael Buble (pronounced boo-blay) is a 25-year-old singing sensation whose smooth voice & heartthrob style harks back to the swingin' greats of earlier decades, to the likes of Frank & Dean, but also speaks to a new generation's sensibility. 2003 self-titled debut from Reprise/143.

I love this CD.......2007-07-08
I love this CD. Not only is it Jazzy but they are pop songs done in Michaels own way, smooth! I love it!
LOVE IT!.......2007-06-27
I love this CD. Perhaps its my love of old music or Michael Buble's wonderful voice! I highly recommend this.
"Just a Dream".......2007-06-12
Michael Bublé's voice takes me to another dimension high above. His voice has an undescribable quality that you have to experience to understand. He's like a cross between Frank Sinatra and Jack Jones. If you enjoy the standards of the American Songbook, you'll love the fresh yet traditional versions of the standards which he sings. I've been listening to the standards sung by Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc for decades and usually don't enjoy remakes by recent modern artists; Michael Bublé is one of the rare exceptions who outshines all of the recent standards singers wannabes.
This CD is an incredibly great album to from start to finish; there's no need to skip songs which are merely mediocre or plain terrible because each song is a great rendition and a true gem.
Michael Buble'.......2007-06-09
Can't say enough about this new and up coming singer. He sounds to me so much like Sinatra when he was young. This album is very good and I enjoyed it very much.
Michael Bublé..........2007-06-02
I wish Frank Sinatra could have heard this young man sing. I'd like to think that he'd be impressed! Four stars!

This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). When standards are done like this, there's just nothing like 'em. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
From This Moment On is an 11-song collection that captures the Canadian-born sensation in full swing, in great company, and at the top of her game. It could also be called her strongest, most cohesive release to date. Krall--for the few still unknowing--is the 41-year old sensation whose cool, heavy-lidded vocals and strikingly sensitive piano-playing has helped her transcend barriers of genre to become a popular artist of the first order who has carved herself a permanent position at the top of the jazz charts. In songs, mood, and delivery, From This Moment On reveals Krall's personal ardor for that golden era of song-making, when Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and (especially) Nat "King" Cole were in their prime. It's musical territory that Krall has often explored, but this album was certainly not a case of simply repeating past formulas: Krall's A-team of support--producer Tommy LiPuma, engineer Al Schmitt, and arranger/bandleader John Clayton--were on hand to ensure that inspiration was kept on an edge, unhindered by the studio environment.

Diana Krall Excells!.......2007-06-27
Diana has one of the greatest voices in the jazz biz. She plays a great piano, sings as a song bird, and is truly a marvelous performer.
(Cute too.)
Buy this one. If you like jazz, it is a Must in your portfolio/collection.
"From This Moment On" ~ Diana Krall.......2007-06-26
Listening to my CD of Diana Krall, "From This Moment On," is so relaxing.
Diana executes her songs with her strong, yet mellow voice.
The "back-up" band is a great asset to this CD, so between Diana singing and the band playing, you feel like you're "In Concert!"
Everyone HAS to hear it to believe it!
Mike
From This Moment On.......2007-06-10
From This Moment On~ Diana Krall is easy listening jazz at its best. Ms Kralls vocal skills are remarkable and she sings these traditional jazz tunes with conviction and fortitude of a grandmaster of jazz. The book-let is beautifull if a bit sparse. The photographs are simply put it amazing and she looks stunning. The production value is right on the money and I like it since it so easy to listen to even for jazz beginners such as myself. Highly recommended indeed and I easily give this album 5 out of 5 stars.
What went on with Ms. Krall?.......2007-05-24
Repertoire consists of rather expected standards. All broadly covered brilliantly by so many vocalists in the past. Ms. Krall and her arrangers adds nothing at all.
Singing offers no surprise than a mainstream singer would do.
Orchestra is currently the darling big band of the time being. Good players, rare good ideas, nothing impelling.
There is an original and beautiful arrangement here: for the track 'How Insensitive'.
And that's all. Let's wait for the next Krall album.
There's no one like her.......2007-05-12
What is there to say? Diana Krall is simply the best. This album is another fine example of consistently high quality musicianship.

Music from Big Pink stands as one of those rare albums that turned the rock world on its axis. On this record, released in 1968 at the height of the psychedelic revolution, the five members of the Band (along with producer-sideman John Simon) eschewed spacey diversions, opting for an earthier route. Soon enough, wah-wah pedals and tape loops were making way for fiddles and mandolins. The group's most democratic effort (Robbie Robertson would soon emerge as the ensemble's mouthpiece), the debut's 11 songs come from Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, and pianist Richard Manuel, who contributes two songs and cowrote the doleful opener, "Tears of Rage," with Bob Dylan. Manuel's role would diminish from this point hence and the balance he brought to the quintet would be missed. Many would argue that Big Pink's sequel, The Band, represents their crowning achievement. The truth is, Big Pink is the purest distillation of the Band, and their preeminent recording. This remastered reissue is generously expanded to include nine bonus tracks, a bunch highlighted by a Robertson rarity ("Ferdinand the Imposter") and a cover of the Stanley Brothers's "If I Lose." --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
She's stoned said the Suede and the moon calf agreed!!.......2007-04-08
Music from Big Pink was one of the first albums I bought as a teenager in the late 60s. It came at a time in my life when I was discovering the world around me, becoming conscious of social issues and discovering who I was.
The music touched my soul and gave life meaning and wonder at a time so much was uncertain. I still listen to the album on occasion and it remains astounding in it's simplicity, beauty and imagery. My favorite album of all time.
Nice first effort.......2007-04-07
Okay, so the self-titled second completely blows this away, but this is still one of The Band's better albums - I've only heard three, so I'm not much of a judge of it. Still, this is an enjoyably rootsy affair. Of course it's got The Weight, a landmark '60's tune with interesting, oft-analyzed lyrics, a well-known chorus, a cool descending bassline, AND great traded lead vocals between Levon Helm, Richard Manuel (whose voice gives me the chills) and Rick Danko. The perfect song. Same with Chest Fever, which is pretty funky - sorta reminds me of Up on Cripple Creek from the next record. And have you heard how many times that organ riff's been imitated? Seriously, it's almost become a cliche now.
Of course, The Band will always be linked to Dylan, and three of these songs were written or cowritten by him. I like - no, LOVE - Tears of Rage, prototypical enigmatic Dylan. Same with I Shall Be Released, which Dylan later recorded himself and admittedly did a better job on because he wisely got that stupid high-pitched synthesizer/organ/whatever-thing out of there. But I love Manuel's vocals on the song, so I can't complain too much. This Wheel's on Fire was Dylan's third contribution, and again it's funky, with a clavinet-sounding keyboard. Probably the weakest of his additions, but still, a good tune.
As I said, Manuel's vocals give me the chills, especially on Lonesome Suzie. Admittedly, the lyrics aren't among Robbie Robertson's best. But Manuel almost brings me to tears when he sings it. No joke. It's a hard song to listen to because of that, but I like it just the same.
Long Black Veil is the most fun you'll find here, an old folk song from BEYOND THE GRAAAAAAAVE with Ultimate Multi-Instrumentalist Garth Hudson adding what sounds like a tuba. A nice, uptempo, swinging song, one of the more underrated ones here.
So far it seems like it should be a five-star, but I can't get into some of this. Like To Kingdom Come, In a Station and Candelonia Mission. I just skip right over 'em. Really boring songs with weak lyrics. And while We Can Talk has fun traded vocals, I can't see much reason to listen to it outside of that. That's just me, though.
Though the next outing was an absolute five-star masterpiece that likely tops everything else The Band ever did (as I've said, I only know three of their albums: this, self-titled and Stage Fright, plus I've got that one-disc Best of the Band), this is an effecient warm-up to that album and recommended to fans of '60's rock, especially roots-rock. If you like this sound, I also recommend Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Stones' stuff from '68 to '72.
The bonus tracks are kind of wastes... I like Yazoo Street Scandal, it should've made the original album, and their version of Key to the Highway is good enough (partially because no-one can make that song bad, really), but most are poorly-written and recorded (Orange Juice Blues, Katie's Been Gone, Ferndidad the Imposter, etc).
Essential.......2007-04-01
One of the greats, absolute must have. Also needed to accompany this is Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" and "The Basement Tapes". Beside these 3 albums the rest seems no more than background noise. Songwriting, singing, musicianship par excellence, how come it has gone so far down in the USA since this? Maybe because these musicians were from Canada in the first place?
PS some of the best tracks on this CD IMHO are those missing from original vinyl - "Yazoo Street Scandal", "Katie's Been Gone", "Long Distance Operator", "Orange Juice Blues" - so even if you have the original vinyl, lucky person, you need this CD too :)
Music from Who Knows Where.......2007-03-29
It was always a close call whether this or the Band's 2nd album was their classic. This reissue and expansion presses the question to the point of impossible resolution. Not only do the outtakes enrich the release, but the remastering clearly improves the sound quality, making it much more dimensional and uncannily clear.
Time has also made it easier to assess this breakout album. It is still unclassifiable in the rock pantheon in which it finds itself. These are guys who went everywhere, heard everything, and play an incredible assortment of instruments well. They came of age when rock combos filled the juke joints and honky tonks, so yeah, you will find their work in the rock bin. In another era it might have been in the country bin, or the folk bin. At times, it sounds like each -- when it doesn't sound like old time carnival music, soul music, church music, even classical music.
For the genesis of this music is deeper than any of these categories. It goes as far back as the first European settlers on the continent; for the ultimate take on this subject consult Greil Marcus' Mystery Train and his essay inside The Basement Tapes. Simply, the music here comes from the mine that the oldest bi-racial folk tales such as Stackalee come from, where also you will find major authors such as Faulkner and Twain poaching when they try to give you a take on early times in America. Some of the stories come out like legends or folk tales, coherently told -- like Long Black Veil. All of it is in clearcut root English, but the closer you listen to some of the songs the more mysterious they become -- what are they even talking about, and who? In our era or 100 years ago? 200? All times in between at once? It is music not from "big pink" but from who knows where, and the band members freely trade the lead singer role back and forth as a song progresses, which only deepens both the wonder and the mystery, as if each of them is tossing on a piece of the whole story only they know.
While all this may sound like an academic exercise, it isn't -- The Band's school was the American road and they kept their eyes and ears wide open, playing separately and as sidemen for years, until they came together and made this. Warning: yes, it may be a bit of an acquired taste. But its well worth the effort, and is not only one of the most important rock records ever cut, but on the short list of important American music from century 20.
The Album That Changed Music Forever.......2007-02-28
Eric Clapton in the liner notes of Blind Faith's deluxe edition sums it up when he described this album as having the most significant impact on him "whose versatility and harmonious unity seemed blissfully free of the corrosive intensity which had fueled Cream".
Furthermore, The Band's melodic interplay and the subtle textures created by their exotic instruments whose close association with Bob Dylan only deepened his(Clapton's) fascination. No need to add words BUT all the bonus tracks, Basement Tape versions are grand fully reproduced in these high caliber remasters artwork and all.

A year after his slickly produced recording debut launched him on a meteoric course to stardom, this combo CD/DVD set chronicles Michael Buble's crowd-pleasing live performances before amphitheater-sized crowds on a triumphant national tour. The audio portion kicks off with pair of new studio recordings again reinforce the 20-something Canadian heartthrob's 1950s-something artistic tack with mixed results: "Nice 'n' Easy" has a Sinatra-faithful jazzy swing; the overproduced, somnambulistic "Can't Help Falling in Love" evokes Perry Como more than Elvis. The remainder of the audio CD is comprised mostly of live versions of songs from Buble's debut, with his takes of "My Funny Valentine," "Fever," Van Morrison's "Moondance" and "Mack the Knife" again suggesting that Buble has an ear cocked wisely towards the Bobby Darin oeuvre. But with the notable exception of three elegant live-in-studio performances culled from Sessions@AOL, the live DVD does Buble's undeniabl! y charming stage presence a great disservice. Intercut awkwardly with offstage comments by Buble and his band, the balance of that disc suffers from an MTV-inspired, cut/dissolve-every-three-seconds style that's intended to focus one's attention, but does exactly the opposite. If sudden stardom virtually guarantees that Buble's impossibly smooth, expressive voice seldom ventures very far outside the Sinatra/Darin mold here, hopefully he'll leverage that fame towards greater artistic challenges in the near future. --Jerry McCulley

SMASH HIT.......2007-01-18
Michael Buble is the best thing that has happened to music in the last twenty years.. The old standards, you can't beat them rate this cd as a number one..
I love this music.......2007-01-14
I have been told I am too old for my age as I love the Rat Pack music and American Standards. This is a great cover of those tunes.
I would love to fly with you!!!.......2006-11-10
This is a dynamite duo: cd/dvd!!! I first heard Michael Buble music in the Spring of 2005. The first purchase was It's Time, which is mind-blowing good!!! Come fly with me is awesome! The music is out of this world, and in my opinion, he sounds better than the original singers in the remakes he sings. WOW!!! The DVD is great! It shows his sense of humor, as well as his sensitive side. And there is no denying that he is an absolutely talented and amazing singer! The band is second to none as well! My impression of his talent was cemented even further when I saw his Concert in Spokane, WA in July of 2006. He never missed a beat and his voice was perfectly in tune. I have shared my excitement about his music and how it has touched my life with all of my friends, and have converted many of them to also be faithful fans of Michael's music. I now own almost all of his CD's and cannot wait to get the next one!
Come Fly With Me.......2006-07-04
This is awesome great to chill out with. Even the kids love it!!!!

Mercurial bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus was signed to Columbia Records for the briefest of time during 1959. His Columbia recordings, however, remain some of the most inspired, mood-jumping jazz in history. The flowing sadness of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" (unedited here for the first time on CD!) rings like a funeral chorus that pitches headlong into a celebration of Lester Young's life and improvising flexibility, rather than his death. And there's the funky furnace blast of "Boogie Stop Shuffle" (also unedited!), which reaches its glory with Booker Ervin's Texas tenor sax, wrapped tight in bluesy tone. With the index of emotions captured, these songs nail why Mingus is possibly the most relevant jazzer for the '90s generation. He swings and shouts and hollers and somersaults. His tunes either induce foot-stomping with their intensity or reach for poignant yearning with their lyrical tapestry of orchestral colors. --Andrew Bartlett

every once in awhile..........2007-03-08
you get a breath of fresh air. its like opening the windows for the first time after a long winter. you've experienced the same thing maybe before but it just feels new.
thats what this disc is to me. i'm not gonna get into technical stuff because i cant. i'll say this tho. in my long ago past i was a horn player. this disc makes me remember exactly what that means. i hear things in here i long ago had forgotten existed in music theory. listening to this after thinking of modern day pop is like comparing picasso to a childs chalk drawing on the sidewalk.
MINGUS' BEST.......2006-12-10
This is Charles Mingus' best and most musically accessible alsbum. Recorded in 1959, it is soul stirring, great hard bebop with some fantastic sax playing by the great Booker Ervin. If you are into jazz, then this is an essential addition to your collection. I can never get tired of hearing this CD.
An excellent album from the multifaceted Charles Mingus.......2006-03-31
This is the CD you should buy if you're new to Mingus. It came out during a highly creative period in his life, and contains some of his most memorable compostions. Ah Um may not be his most ambitious album or his best, but it is one of his most well rounded and diverse, showing many of the styles, quirks and facets that make Charles Mingus one of the top jazz composers of all time. And it's all laid out in easily digestable morsels, ie some of the songs were edited to make them more concise and able to fit on vinyl. Don't worry, the edits are not noticable. Is it bop? Is it post bop? Is it swing? Well, yes and no. Mingus looks not only to big bands, bebop, and hard bop circa 1959, but also gospel, spirituals, pre-jazz and the blues for inspiration. Ah Um is as diverse and eclectic as it is enjoyable. It points the way to the many directions Mingus was exploring or would explore in his later career. Ah Um is a wonderful look into the music of a great mind and is by turns angry, sad, tender, sarcastic, joyful and damn good. You can feel the passion.
How speak of jazz without regard for Mr. Mingus.......2006-03-17
1 of 3-5 star lps- (see "Blues and Roots" and "Dynasty") issued by Mingus in 50's. All his own compositions, the song flow is unparalleled. No song can be called better than another, but, of course, we all favor some. Listen to his eloquent 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' Charlie's tribute to lester young. Check out 'Fables of Faubus; and think about.... CIVIL RIGHTS! Overwhelming opening funk/jazz piece "Better Git It In Your Soul" Mingus was certainly a master composer, creator, artist and a central link, between at most, 2 other great jazz composers. Buying this cd is a 'no brainer' for anyone of an age that knows what was, is and will be good for as long as we have ears. Companion cd is "Dynasty". The man who entitled his auto-biography "Beneath the Underdog" still gets way too little respect.
A Fascinating and Revealing masterpiece.......2006-01-20
i always knew that Mingus was great...but it was not something that i could attest to through personal experience. i had seen the light that was Coltrane, Davis, Sun Ra, Dolphy...but Mingus' masterpieces somehow eluded me. probably due to the fact that i just simply did not take the time to check them out. well, i picked up Mingus Ah Um (finally)...and it all rang true. not only was this man an excellent bass player, but a true genius in composing. his music shines bright with a broad range of feeling and emotion. the righteous anger is present within the notes...anger that boiled hot over the shakey political/cultural climate of the times. but the music's fire is stoked by coals of passion and sincerity, jazz morphs into the blues and swings into melodies so alive and free that they can't be denied in their originality and greatness. i've been listening to this album only about 10 times and i'm still finding new things revealed to me with each spin. Mingus' vision grows deeper and more profound each time around. and there's so much more to explore and discover.

Glenn Miller Greatest Hits.......2007-04-11
Glenn Miller is my all-time favorite of the big band musicians. I was only nine years old when Glenn Miller's plane was lost. However, my parents managed a boarding house for young military men and their wives. The men were stationed at what is now Ellsworth AFB, in Rapid City, SD. The wives wiled away their days playing board games, or playing the piano and singing this type music. It is a wonderful memory for me. My father was a huge Glenn Miller fan, too, so we listened to his music frequently. This is an excellent collection of his hits; it would be hard to select a favorite, although "In the Mood" and 'Moonlight Serenade" would be at the top of the list.

No less an expert on pop affairs than Neil Sedaka likens the impossibly mature voice of 14-year-old vocalist/TV star (CBS' Still Standing) Renee Olstead to "Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday all wrapped in one." There's no disputing the sultry vocal talents showcased on this debut that balances familiar chestnuts from the great American songbook ("Summertime," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sentimental Journey") with more recent fare that veers from R 'n' B sass ("Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby") to 70s chart hits like Sedaka's own "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" and Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis." A cynical ear might question how much of Olmstead's own life informs these bluesy performances: how trying can eigth grade be for an attractive redhead with a major label contract? Indeed, the tagline for at least one latter-day Ella Fitzgerald project comes frequently to mind here: "Is it real, or it Memorex?" Olmstead is yet another teen protege of hugely successful producer David Foster (who's midwifed the careers of Josh Groban and Michael Buble in recent years), and he provides her with some sturdy jazz arrangements to riff emotively on here--even if his production is as slick and bloodless as ever. Still, Foster's penchant for overwrought melodrama is kept mercifully in check on his own composition "I Want a Love to Last," while his shrewd teaming of the young chanteuse with fellow teen pop phenom Peter Cincotti on Sedaka's "Breaking Up.." deftly underscores the promising talents of both. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Renee Olstead, a singer all will know about.......2007-07-05
To start, I haven't bought or wasted much time in the past 30 years listening to anything trying to pass for music.
I read all 160 reviews, to be sure I made it very clear what her album means to me. And why I would bother with adding a review that's clearly in the majority.
I found out about Renee's singing thru her TV show as others did.
So I don't waste anyones time with repeating what's been repeated many times in the past 160 reviews, I'll leave out her age. It has no relevance to her sound.
I won't compare her to anyone else...Not to say another more mature singer
hasn't emulated Renee note for note to her disadvantage because Renee did it first and better.
I've tried, but at a total loss to get hold of her other two albums 'Unleashed' & 'Stone Country'. Much as I like her singing, I'm not putting out $80.00 for a 4 track album by anyone. But If I were to spend that much on music, her singing would be the deciding factor.
With most of the 160 reviews, they focus on the fact the album is bluesy/jazz.. and her age, and how this relates to how she sounds. I wouldn't know bluesy jazz if it bit me. But I do know when I like something, and my only gripe about Renee, is that I only have 14 songs by her to play over and over aqain. Her new album Skylark is due out in two days, reported by several web sites. And for this reason, I add my positive review to this album. I want more albums by Renee to listen to. One album just doesn't play that long. I figure the more that know
about her, the more incentive she has to make more albums. And increase my odds of more albums by her.
I see with Renee's album, the music and her renditions. It's all about her sound and how it sounds like her smiling with each song. You can hear how she enjoys singing. And something else I've found, playing her album over & over again also brings on new discoveries each time. The same songs are never the same. That's why I can't get enough of her singing.
My favorite was & still is Midnight at the oasis.. But it's having a hard time remaining at the top of my list. She sings duets that change every time I hear them, and inch them closer to the top of the list.
I really shouldn't mention a favorite, as I've given all 14 songs in my Itunes list 5 stars, so that when I play my favorites, hers are at the top.
Oasis just has such an odd story line to it.
My recommendation would be, if you like music, Renee is the one to watch. If you like the genre of music she's now into, you wouldn't want to be caught not knowing who Renee Olstead is.
Then you have her invitation to sing for the president. I predict she'll sing for many more presidents.
I was prompted to read all 160 reviews to see just why this album only rated a 4 1/4 stars. It seems there were 3 Trolls that wasted every ones time with a review from them. And several that just didn't feel like 5 was deserved. None lower than 3 except the trolls. And even one of them couldn't give her less than a 3. I'd say that speaks more than most of the other 155+ reviews. A troll that couldn't bring himself to bash her singing worse than a 3.
Had to be trolls. 155+ were in complete opposition. Remove the troll opinions and you have a solid 4 3/4. Maybe more depending on the star graphics available.
A joyous revelation..........2007-06-16
Pretty redheads are proof of God's creative genius. That said, I sure didn't expect an album by a pretty young girl to be sold in the jazz section...Surprise......
This is an absolutely fabulous recording...Renee handles these standards with the maturity and vocal strength of one of significantly more years. The idividual songs need no comment; you already know them. The good news is that she will only improve with time. Our hope is that there's more where this came from. Get this. You'll be glad you did.
Renee Olstead, the breeziest chanteuse to come along.......2007-04-06
I have come to know Renee Olstead ever since she appeared on the popular CBS comedy "Still Standing", but it is her singing that gets to me. She is like no other teenage artist in that she is the only one to date that can interpret jazz statndards in a very breezy manner. Not is she talented, but she is very adorable. If she were a contestant on American Idol, I would vote for her in a second. In fact, she should be a superstar based on her singing alone. If you go into jazz, I strongly suggest purchasing this CD. It will win you over.
Can't get enough.......2007-03-23
This girl has a fantastic voice, you will be sure to love this CD. This has quickly become my favorite CD. You will think you are in a swanky lounge back in the day.

Ella Fitzgerald made some of her greatest recordings with Duke Ellington and his band, including the extensive three-CD Ellington Songbook and the eight-CD Cote d'Azur Concerts. This session from 1965 is an excellent place to begin listening to the relationship, a self-contained set that joins Fitzgerald with the Duke and his still-great band. The brilliance of Fitzgerald's voice is apparent even when placed amid such great Ellingtonians as altoist Johnny Hodges and trumpeters Cootie Williams and Cat Anderson. She and Hodges are perfectly matched on subtle Billy Strayhorn tunes like "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" and "Passion Flower." --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Another Pinnacle.......2007-02-03
Before hearing this summit meeting, I was prepared to call "Blue Rose" (see review) one of Duke's 3-4 greatest albums and certainly the most underrated. My 40-year-long ignorance about this consummate encounter between Duke and Ella tells me "Blue Rose" has competition in the underrated category.
This is Ellington at full strength (before the loss of Johnny Hodges) and Ella, too (before some of the wavering vibrato of the 1970s). Above all, it's a session that captures every delicate shade and hue of the exquisitely beautiful, albeit often challenging, music of Billy Strayhorn. There's no fooling around during this session, no jam session looseness, no programming to meet general consumer approval (starting the session with "Something to Live For" and "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" is in itself indicative of the seriousness of this project).
As respectful as this date is, there are fine moments by some of the Ellington stars--Hodges, Gonsalves, Cootie, Jimmy Hamilton, even Duke's piano. And to the usual brain trust of Duke and Stray, add the arranging talents of the wonderful Jimmy Jones (accompanist for Sarah, then Nancy Wilson). Ellingtonphiles will appreciate the inimitable orchestral colors and textures along with the absence of haste and sloppiness while at the same time discovering a more "personal" Ellington and Ella than on the 50s Songbook.
Anyone new to the pair might wish to save this one for later and start instead with the Duke-Ella Cote d'Azure date, where there's more scattin' and jammin'. And if you want to hear Ella singing the greatest C-Jam Blues/Duke's Place (the titles are always used interchangeably) of all time, there's only one recording worth considering: "Bluella."
This is Different.......2005-10-22
This 1965 recording is quite different from the 1957 Songbook meeting as it sounds like it was thoroughly rehearsed. This is a paradox, in my opinion, since the typical looseness of Duke's band is absent, resulting in a more rigid and mechanical performance. On the other hand, the band doesn't run over Ella as they often did on the Songbook. This is probably want Norman Granz was looking for the first time around when Duke, according to legend, showed up unprepared. I strongly prefer the Songbook though, in spite of its problems.
Excellent.......2004-03-26
Despite the fact that this is not one of Ella or Duke's best known albums, it is defintely one of the best. Ella was at perhaps her absoltue peak vocally when this was recorded in 1965, and I doubt that there is a living vocalist who could re-create many moments in the album. But it's not just about a wonderful voice; Ella puts a lot of soul and feeling into these songs. Her "Something to Live For" is so poignant that it is impossible to listen to it without being moved. The two "Flower" songs are excellent, expoliting her rich lower register to create intense longing and desire. "Sunrise" is again touching, the First Lady sings it with just the right blend of sadness and hope for a better day. "Azure" is awesome, especially after the full band drops out, leaving just Ella and Duke on piano to noodle around. "Frustration" is fun, with Ella wailing her heart out. "Duke's Place" is a also great, showing that Duke and Ella could do wonders with just two notes. "Brown Skin Gal in the Calico Gown" starts out as a soft, yearning ballad, and then becomes a flag-waving swinger. "What Am I Here For?" is sung by Ella with her tongue-in-cheek, like "How dare you leave me alone with nothing to look forward to?!" ;-) And finally, the closing "Cottontail" is unforgettable; it is truly one of the greatest vocal improvisations preserved on record.
Well, that's about it. Can you tell I liked this CD? :-P
The Duke and the First Lady of Song - a dream team.......2004-01-04
This is a musical reunion of Ella and Duke in 1965 since they created their monumental 1957 "Ella Sings Duke Ellington" album. The 1965 album brought back the musicians who made the 1957 album special and you can see that Ella is having a ball and in some cases, she reaches an intense emotionality very rarely associated with her, like my favorite Ellington tune "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing." The key charts exploited her lower registers and she langoured in its vast richness. And as in the 1957 album, where rumours of under-rehearsals were rife, the 1965 album did nothing to dissipate those rumours. In songs like "Azure", one can sense that there was no rehearsal -- more like an extended jam session with Gonsalves trading obbligatos with Ella. Ella herself was at her loosest best where she playfully pushed her voice to exciting improvisatory limits. Highly recommended. Next to Count Basie, I think Ella is happiest when she works with the Duke. And can't anyone ever eclipse Ella's "Caravan"?
Strong Chemistry.......2000-03-11
Ella Fitzgerald is one of the worlds Greatest Vocalist ever.her voice is Diamond.together with One of The Greatest Teachers of Music Mr.Duke Ellington this disc is a must have.the Pairing of the two is Music History.her voice and the band are pure magic.you feel Admiration&genius on both parts.a strong chemistry.together they hit the right note.

This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."
The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.
Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Good starter set for jazz beginners.......2006-02-22
This is a beautifully packaged 5 disc set highlighting some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. If you buy this set and are really excited about the sound and the masterful artists presented then, I highly recommend collecting the 22 discs of individual artists by Burns which showcase the popular and influential music of those artists. Having all of the Ken Burns Jazz editions is of course just a start but a good start into the world of jazz it will be.
good as a starting point as any.......2005-10-10
If you obtained this set, miles davis' kind of blue, and "the verve story 1944-1994" you have the makings of a good starting point of a jazz collection.
