Smilin and Scattin.......2006-03-18

Like eating really good filet mignon for the first time, and feeling slightly sorry that you deprived yourself up that point. But otherwise, just smiling, swaying to the beat and scatting along.

A good friend of mine who is a semi-professional musician attempted to teach me about modes, how jazz is often constructed. I'm just an appreciative music fan, but clearly the artists on this collection were high adepts, skillful in weaving together some of the most complex yet unpretentious music ever heard. Too many fabulous artists to single out; they're all good. I hope jazz fans back in the day enjoyed this music as much as I do.

Essential Listening for the Expert and Neophyte.......2005-09-26

As a long time jazz fan, you'd expect that I would have most of the material on a box like this. And I do. But there are quite a few gems I've found nowhere else and, in any case, it's wonderful having all of this amazing music in one place. "Bebop Spoken Here" is indeed a perfect introduction to this challenging subgenre of jazz, but it is also a wonderful set for the connoisseur of jazz. All the greats are here, both the famous and the obscure. If you haven't picked this up yet, do so!

This huge compilation casts a wide net, capturing the classic recordings of the giants of bebop: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Bud Powell, the early recordings of future stars like Dexter Gordon and Stan Getz, the popularizers who made it accessible to a larger audience: Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Charlie Barnet and Charlie Ventura and the rarities by now-obscure musicians: Freddie Webster, Sonny Berman, Tom Archia, Tony Fruscella and many others.

Why buy this set? You won't hear this music anywhere else as radio these days won't play anything made before the LP era.
You will discover that although this music was far-out, Dizzy Gillespie was popular enough to have his own big band and a
major-label record contract. Charlie Parker could play any style,
his first record with Tiny Grimes is pure swing and Parker plays superbly. You'll hear Trummy Young, Louis Armstrong's trombone player, play superbly on "Good Bait" with Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon. You will hear so much rare and excellent music, otherwise completely unobtainable, by musicians, like Tadd Dameron, so influential and yet now forgotten. You will hear the
greatness of those who died far too soon like Wardell Gray and Fats Navarro.

If you want to experience and understand this music, this is essential listening. Reasonably priced, excellently documented too!

You upset my home..........2007-01-24

You get a lot with this box set, with certain obvious and unavoidable omissions (no JB of course)...

But it seems surprising to me that certain artists are missing from this box set. For one, Joe Tex, who's Right Back To My Arms would be a perfectly respectable addition to the King story told here. AS to whether he was important to the label, it it probably important to include him in the sense that it was there that Joe learned the tough lessons of the music business, worked as a songwriter, had his first recording break, and also there that he wrote Little Willie John's 'Fever', a big hit for King, which he was forced to give away to cover a debt.

What I want to add is Syd Nathan's 3 recorded talks are a cool insider look at a company of such musical importance, yet hardly anything is written about the inside workings of the company. Nathan is not a tyrant; he was a tough business man who had more taste than some of the other post-war record company owners. Compared to Lubinsky (Savoy) and Weiss (Old Town) and Blane (Jubilee), this guy was a pussycat!

Of course, there's almost no James Brown - his sides are not the property of the current King owners.

As far as one complaint about Joe Tex not on the box, hell, he cut a handful of early medicore sides for King....hardly a part of their history!

What is missing, though (and this is what the 5th disc should've included) is the early sides by artists who made a splash on other labels (Joe Tex, Syl Johnson, etc.)

But, ultimately, when you look over the history of King's R&B recordings, most of the really endearing favorites are here and sound great.

I'm giving this Box Set 3 stars only as a nod to the fabulous artists who appear here, most of whom never received the recognition they deserve. Some of my favorites include The "5" Royales, Hank Ballard, Little Willie John, and that nasty Wynonie Harris. Fortunately, as another reviewer suggests, you can buy decent CD collections by many of the individual artists presented in this incomplete box set.
However, 2 stars glaringly missing belong to the late, great Joe Tex, and to the Godfather himself--James Brown--with only 1 (!) song!!
Where are those spectacular recordings from Joe Tex's King days anyway?? Tunes like 'Get Way Back', 'Pnuemonia', (the seriously rockin')'Right Back in My Arms', Another Woman's Man...It's criminal he's not included here! And James Brown...He personifies the King label!!
My advice is put together your OWN King collection.
Buy vinyl. Call Rhino.

One of the best box sets for R&B........2000-05-05

Rhythm and Blues is some of the toughest music available. This set focuses on the King label. Based out of Cincinnati, King gave artist like James Brown a chance. Hank Ballard also recorded at King records. Work With Me Annie is one of the best songs never played on oldies radio. The booklet is very imformative and the pictures are also nice. Many of the songs on this disc have been forgotten, but thanks to this collection, they just might make it back.

Essential Music.......2000-04-29

A great collection of songs from that infamous label run by Syd Nathan. Beside the scholarly enjoyment you can get out of so many songs in their seminal nature (Train Kept-Rollin, Big Ten-Inch Record, I'm Tore Down, I'll Drown In My Tears, K.C. Loving (aka Kansas City), The Twist, and many many more) the MUSIC is fantastic. Dive in anywhere and enjoy. The only caveat is the booklet is poorly written - - focusing too much on Syd Nathan and giving very incomplete information on the artists themselves - PLUS, there are no songwriting credits! Which is a crime of high order. The only other thing to watch out for is the 4th CD is pretty much tapes of Syd Nathan talking for a half an hour. But otherwise it is a must to own and share.

a remarkable collection at a great price.......2001-03-04

Like the companion set, Hittin' on All Six (jazz guitar), this collection brings together a wide range of excellent records that date from the earliest jazz recordings going up though early modern. Some of the selections are predictable, some are obscure, but they all are interesting. Lots of Sid Catlett, for example, and excellent choices on the big band side in particular (Cozy Cole, Jimmy Crawford and Jo Jones, to name three). No Lionel Hampton, but the fabulous cymbal beat of Alvin Burroughs with a Hampton small group. And of course, Chick Webb's Liza, which features wonderful drumming but also a really fine trumpet solo by Bobby Stark (the 2nd solo).

It was way too many years ago that Dave Brubeck recorded his first solo piano outing, Brubeck Plays Brubeck. This three-CD set (packaged for the price of two CDs) rightfully captures Telarc's solo Brubeck set, available singly as Just You, Just Me along with the live quartet CD Late Night and the all-star session Young Lions & Old Tigers. What's so vital about this three-pack is the range of different Dave Brubecks it displays: there's the thoughtful, late-night dreaminess of the solo materials, which show customary harmonic flashes and wonderfully phrased complexities that manage to be familiar even when totally new. With Late Night you get a live set from Brubeck's late-career saxophonist-of-choice, Bobby Militello, who takes tunes at a pace that sounds inspired by the spirit of the late, great Paul Desmond. The set shows that Brubeck's careful development of his early work was definitive enough to last decades. Rounding out this set is a volume of duets and collaborations with a host of "young lions" (including Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove) alternating tunes with some "old tigers" (including vocalist Jon Hendricks and Gerry Mulligan. These are relaxed meetings, but none of them less than excellent. --Andrew Bartlett

Wonderful summary of Mulligan's last years.......2000-04-05

These three late Mulligan recordings in a boxed set are a must for any fan of the baritone player/arranger/composer, and an excellent introduction of Mulligan's music to anyone. Paraiso, a selection of brazilian music, mostly written by Gerry Mulligan i cooperation with brazilian singer/actress Jane Duboc, cooks gently and has all the brazilian tinge anyone could wish for. Memorable tunes, including an excellent take on Jobim's "Wave". Dream A Little Dream, a quartet recording, a fine rendering of many jazz classics. And finally, Dragonfly, as I have reviewed before, is, in my opinion, one of Mulligan's finest recordings through his fifty year long recording career. The tunes are great, the players are great and in superb shape, the arrangements lush and pretty, with a 5-piece brass section accompnying the band, featuring John Scofield, Dave Samuels, Grover Washington, Jr. and Warren Vache.

Hardly essential, possibly worthwhile........2001-05-28

You get what you pay for with this inexpensive LaserLight set. For a jazz novice interested in a bargain, this might be worth buying, since none of the recordings are awful, and they span a range from the late 50s to (I assume) sometime in the 70s. Likewise for Getzophiles, this might be worthwhile to flesh out your collection, though be forewarned that the liner notes, especially for time and place of recording, are pitifully lacking. Disc 1 ("The Song is You") was recorded live in Europe with Stanley Cowell (p), Miroslav Vitous (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d). Typical late sixties drumming and piano styles. If you dig DeJohnette, this might be one to try. Disc 2 ("...with European Friends") sadly doesn't list who those friends are, and was recorded in 1958/1959. Disc 3 was recorded with several different European orchestras, and includes some nice tunes as well as a stinker or two with cheesy organ and pseudo-disco flavoring to at least one song. All in all, I sorta wish I had my $14 back, but with each listen I find a bit more to appreciate.
