This memorable impromptu session arose at the 1969 Montreux festival when tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey joined Les McCann's working trio. McCann's regular rhythm section of Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Donald Dean on drums provides rock-solid support for some strongly felt and entertaining music. Harris's light-toned but expressive horn shines on his own "Cold Duck Soup" and McCann's "Kathleen's Theme," while the whole band rocks on "You Got It in Your Soulness." Great performance. Poor sound........2007-05-30

This review is related to the Japanease release (mini-LP replica) of Swiss Movement.
This is one of the greatest jazz performances. Spirit. Soul. Life. Drum. Ecstasy. But the sound quality is of big questione. Yes, it is dated to 60's. Yes, it was recorded at the concert. But the bonus track showcases how good the sound quality could have been on this release. On all other tracks you hear drums, keyboards and voice in your left channel and the horns in your right channel. Bass is almost not defined and is boom-boom box rather than a set of strings. The audience is in your right channel, too.
This is a great piece of jazz (probably, a must have). But it is definitely not an audiophile record or even close to it.

The CD is great if you like the sounds of bloated cattle slipping a disc while moo-ing. The first track is the only one on the CD worth having... can you say, "download"?

Stellar performance.......2006-11-05

This is my very first Les McCann CD. I'd heard of him before but hadn't heard anything by him and didn't really bother to search anything out. Then I got "Mint Jam", the 2001 live album by Yellowjackets and the breathtaking opening song, "Les Is Mo", is a tribute to the great man. I knew then that I had to search him out but I still didn't do anything for years. Silly me.

Then, earlier this year, I heard this album in a friend's house and I immediately knew where my Les McCann collection would begin. "[O]ne of the most stimulating and serendipitous live jazz performances ever captured on record," says Mike Hennessey on the CD cover and he's not exaggerating. Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland, back in June 1969, McCann is joined here by the tenor sax giant Eddie Harris. He's another one I have to start looking for. Apart from his appearance on the 1994 John Scofield album "Hand Jive", coincidentslly an album which itself opens with a nod to McCann in "I'll Take Les", I'm ashamed to say I have nothing by him either. I obviously still have a long way to go.

Produced by Nesuhi Ertegun & Joel Dorn, Benny Bailey plays trumpet, Larry Vinnegar plays bass and Donald Dean is on the drums. The opening song, "Compared To What" is a real swinger with a vocal performance that just makes the heart smile. Good music never grows old and though this album was recorded almost 40 years ago, it still sounds fresh and is much more engaging than a lot of the stuff that is passed off as music today. You hear the applause and cheering of the audience lucky enough to have been there that day and you just can't help but smile. Each of the six songs on this album is simply brilliant.

Granted, I've come to this one very late but I intend to spread the word. If you love stomping jazz piano that you can literally dance to or even if you just love jazz, you must have this CD.

One of the best live jazz performances ever........2006-07-08

This is one of the best jazz performances I've ever heard. It's especially amazing given the fact that the musicians had never played together or rehearsed before performing live. This is a must have CD for jazz lovers.

Les McCann, Eddie Harris, Donald Dean, Benny Bailey, and Leroy Vinegar were superb at Montreaux and get an A+. "Compared to What" just tore it up and most likely set the mood and tempo for the whole festival. I would have hated to go on after these ALLSTARS performed. The music on this disc is timeless. People will be enjoying it long, long after all of them are gone.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The other 1970's.......2006-05-20

Although Swiss Movement was recorded at the festival in 1969, it was essentialy an early 1970's record. It was a funky, jazzy hip as hell album that sounds incredible today. These posers, who complain about phrases like "sock it to me" are idiots. Les McCann looks like on fierce dude on the cover.

Still incredible.......2004-04-08

I first heard this disk when I was 15, and it knocked me out. The lead tune, "Compared to What" was the funky breakout, crossover hit that most people know, but to my mind the greatest tune on this album is Harris' "Kathleen's Tune". This is a bop tune with a catchy head that Harris works through in every possible variation, starting out with a simple diatonic restaement, and moving more and more outside until he's playing nothing *but* outside notes. It took my breath away when I first heard it, and still does.

The rest of the album may not his the same heights as "Kathleen's Tune" or "Compared to What" but it's still all great. Benny Bailey's solos make you wonder where he'd been hiding before this album came out (Sweden, as it turned out). "You Got It In Your Soulness" is another Les McCann gospel-influenced tune that makes you wnat to dance. And so on.

I've gone through three copies of this album over the years (LP, CD and now remastered CD), and played it for scores of jazz neophytes, most recently my 10 year old nephew- and he dug it. You will, too.

"Compared To What" is Highlight of a Great Album.......2002-08-04

When I heard "Compared To What," I had to hear it again. It hooked me in from the moment the drums kick in with the steady ride cymbal at the beginning.

Some have made reference to the song's datedness, but I don't see it as a very dated song at all. Of course, Les sings about the Vietnam War (although he does not mention it by name,) and some may see that as dated, but if that were true, then any song that mentions current events is dated. Essentially, the listener must understand the times to understand the song. If one does not understand life during 1969, many of the song's references are either laughable or confusing. In fact, after one verse, McCann yells, "Sock it to me," one reference to a phrase used often on the NBC-TV comedy, "Laugh-In." One previous reviewer comented on the silliness of that phrase, but it's no different than hearing James Brown yell, "Hit Me!" Not only is it NOT corny, it's in keeping with the funky mood of the song.

"Compared To What" is worth the price of the CD alone, but each song afterward is great in its own right, including "Cold Duck Time," which Les McCann admits was given to the band by Eddie Harris that day. By the way the band plays it, you'd have never known that it wasn't a long standard on their song list.

This is a definite gem of an album.

Withstands the test of time, almost?.......2001-01-29

"Swiss Movement" is worth the price for 'Compared to What?' but nothing else. It really doesn't require any more listening. If you want more of Eddie Harris or Les McCann then try the CD's; 'Electrifying Eddie Harris' and 'Much Les' Much more electrifying and much better. I first heard 'Compared to What' in 1969 on WJLB Detroit and the DJ at the time was as turned on as I and had to play it again without a break. It is one of only a dozen numbers I loved the first time I heard it. This was not considered high art at the time. These guys were not Lee Morgan or John Coltrane but more easy listening and mainstreem. Try not to laugh to heard when Les shouts out 'Sock-it-to-Me.' It was just as corny and unhip in the 60's as it sounds now, and to this day I still have no idea what it means. I ran right out and bought it at a place called, "LBJ's" (Lottsa Boss Jams) and still think it a Boss Jam.

These VoxBox series of Brendel playing Beethoven are wonderful: beautiful playing and a great price! This set is very impressive, particularly the 32 Variations On An Original Theme In C Minor. Brendel's playing is very expressive, and the sound quality is excellent.

This collection of piano variations and smaller pieces by Beethoven shows Alfred Brendel in excellent form as an interpreter of that composer's work. However, four sets of variations are missing! The Variations on a March by Dressler (Beethoven's first extant composition published in 1783) is only mentioned in the liner notes. The Twelve Variations on Haibl's "Minuet a la Vigano" SHOULD have been given the characteristic Brendel stamp. They deserve to be heard more often. Also absent are the now considered spurious set on "Ich Hab Ein Kleines Huttchen Nur" (published 1832). The "Diabelli" Variations have been recorded by Mr. Brendel in a separate recording on the Philips label. Also, some of the piano sonatas and little pieces (excepting the C Minor Allegro and the Op. 89 Polonaise) were better left off.

I can't believe no one has reviewed this album. These discs are a complete and continual joy! The sound is brilliant beyond compare, and what Brendel gets out of the piano is amazing--an incredible range of moods and dynamics. I also own the variations in a (much more expensive) set by Buchbinder, and they seem cold and stiff compared to these. The longer I live the more I admire Beethoven, and these discs add immensely to my awe at his genius.

A good deal to enjoy.......2006-04-15

Though Beethoven could play the violin he was not a virtuoso on the instrument. The piano, on the other hand, was changed as an instrument by him. He was always on a quest for more sonorous and richer sounds and piano makers did their best to oblige. Many of Beethoven's avant guarde ideas about composition and the role of music in self expression started as piano sonatas and piano works. With this in mind, Beethovens compositions for the piano are some of the most outstanding, brilliant, and technically pure works to emerge from any composer. It is impossible not to feel the emotions Beethoven wishes to convey from piece to piece.

The piano sonatas are really self contained dramas. In them, you will hear the expressions of sadness, beauty, rage, and unbounded joy. It is impossible to listen to this collection and not find pleasure in it. The recordings as well as the performers are top-notch. Highly recommended.

An excellent set featuring Ludwig van's sets of variations wherein he gets jazzy and swings on catchy tunes! Highly recommended.

NOTE: For those of you who don't understand metaphor: what I'm saying here is that Beethoven used popular operatic hit-tunes of his day and improvised variations on those tunes--as is done in America's original art-form--Jazz. Get it?
