Producer Hal Willner has had an extraordinary career matching off-the-wall contemporary performers with some enchanted by-ways of American music, creating fresh visions of Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Disney soundtracks along the way. This is the soundtrack for a film of performances of Harold Arlen's music, a sequel to filmmaker Larry Weinstein's previous Willner collaboration, September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill. Arlen was among the first of the great American songwriters to draw inspiration from jazz, a regard that's been returned in 70 years of reinterpretation. This collection has both the period novelty tunes and the great ballads. Arlen himself is heard in a 1955 recording of "Last Night When We Were Young," while "Minnie the Moocher's Wedding Day"--already too self-conscious for camp revision--is heard in its 1932 incarnation by the Boswell Sisters and the Dorsey Brothers. The character of Minnie turns up as well in "Kickin' the Gong Around," with David Johansen relishing the Cab Calloway role. Jimmy Scott wrings every ounce of bittersweet passion from both "I Had a Love Once" and a soaring, visionary "Over the Rainbow." Scott's vocal androgyny seems like a theme here, extending to Rufus Wainwright and Hawksley Workman. Debbie Harry overdubs a clever arrangement of "Stormy Weather" combined with "Ill Wind," summoning up more of Arlen's foreboding weather. Along with the stars, Willner provides opportunities for some great singers whose names might not be instantly recognizable. Ranee Lee's brilliant "Stormy Weather" touches on Lena Horne's original, while Mary Margaret O'Hara creates a quavering, swirling piece of original musical theater from "Blues in the Night." From Eric Mingus's ominous oration of "Get Happy" to Sandra Bernhard's earnest torch treatment of "Come Rain or Come Shine," Willner finds freshly entertaining ways for past and present to meet over a set of great tunes. --Stuart Broomer

More about the performers than Harold Arlen.......2006-11-02
I listened to the first four tracks of this CD before I discarded it. They were self-indulgent performances much involved the performers' emotions. Turning a love song into a tortured lament may be excellent for self expression but it has very little to do with the music. I suggest the performers listen to it and leave the rest of us alone.
If you don't know Harold Arlen's music and just listened to this CD, you might conclude that he has nothing to offer. In fact, he is one of the most wonderful of songwriters. I would suggest a wonderful collection called "Harold Arlen Centenial Celebration 100".
marvelous renditions for new generation!.......2005-09-29
i cant fathom why people hate this cd.i personally think it is a really great tribute to the works of mr.harold arlen.it's really fresh, yes,i admit when u first press play, you wont get the lazy, lushful drawl of rufus's "it's only a paper moon" and you must wonder where and why debbie harry sings "stormy weather" in such a way that seems so outta place.but listen and keep on listening, you'll find all these performers are really one of a kind.they are unique in giving these tunes a zestful spritz as if it were really written exclusively for 'em singers in this cd.best of all they arent copycats like michael bubble, trying oh-so-hard to be like the originals.this is a tribute,a really honest tribute and a good intro to the new generation!stormy with marvellous good drenching of rain, this piece of record!
I don't understand why all these people hated it. I loved it.......2005-05-21
Caught the show on PBS. I watched it only because Sandra Bernhard and Debbie Harry were in it. I was blown away by Rufus Wainright's "Paper Moon." It was like he was singing it to me and me personally and he meant every word. Very sexy, very hot. And I had never heard Wainright before, so I'm not just a fan. Then Marc Anthony Thomas sang "I've Gotta Right To Sing The Blues". Threw his head back, closed his eyes, and belted it out like he was the only person in the world and he just loved the song and wanted to sing it for himself and himself alone. Beautiful. Nothing in the rest of the show stood out as bad. Yes, some performances were worse than others. But these two astounding performances have haunted me for months. Now I've decided I just have to have the CD. I really want this on DVD, so I can watch those two again.
Unbelievably bad.......2005-03-21
I caught the documentary on Trio last night from which this CD was apparently taken. I love Arlen's music, and I was really looking forward to hearing about his life. Well, my first inkling that something was wrong was when the singer (Rufus Wainwright, I found out later) comes out and starts to mangle "Paper Moon." My GOD, it was bad. I winced every time he opened his mouth. So I figured he was just an anomaly, and continued to watch. But the next singer was equally as bad, and I kept thinking, there are TONS of great cabaret singers and Broadway singers out there; why weren't they used? When the third singer I heard sounded just as bad, I turned off the show in disgust. I can just imagine what the rest of the CD sounds like. Stay away!
Overall the interpretations are bad.......2004-11-18
Risks were taken, but almost none of them work. Not recommended

Failed Ideas.......2004-12-09
Maureen McGovern is a national treasure. Her Naughty Baby CD to me is the 2nd coming of Christ. By comparison Out of this World is quite disappointing. Mostly either Harold Arlen or MM's uninspiring interpretations and/or Renzi's arrangements don't seem to suit MM on this CD. The drums and percusion are sometimes schlocky. The screechy sax is always terrible. Also not working for me are the electric keyboard/synthesizer, the electric guitar and the cello. Even Renzi's piano playing is sometimes a let down. Jay Leonhart's great bass work seems to be the only thing that you can depend on here. Did MM do this to herself or is Renzi mainly responsible? Spend your money instead on: Naughty Baby, The Music Never Ends, The Pleasure of his Company and Christmas With MM. All wonderful music.
Simply Exquisite.......2003-12-01
I'd forgotten what a beautiful, supple vocal instrument McGovern has. Here, she sings blues- and jazz-flavored tunes, torchy ballads, and more--all Harold Arlen--including "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Over the Rainbow," "Let's Take a Walk Around the Block," "The Man That Got Away" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her "Optimistic Voices" (from The Wizard of Oz) is worth the price of the entire CD. It is simply exquisite, like a fine jewel, polished and gleaming with feeling.

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20
Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15
no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.
