Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Featuring the Cologne-based WDR Big Band with guests trumpeter Jon Faddis, saxophonist David Sanchez, and three superb percussionists--Alex Acuna, Alphonso Garrido, and Marcio Doctor--Schifrin's Latin Jazz Suite makes notable use of motifs, structures, and resonances from his previous compositions. Do not infer an exercise in shabby cannibalism, however. This is a nobly ambitious work. The geographical sweep is formidable. In addition to commemorating jazz's African roots, Schifrin takes us from Cuba and the Caribbean to Brazil and his native Argentina. All six movements have much to savor, but in the end, the Latin Jazz Suite is greater than the considerable sum of its parts; it is the varied sonorousness of the charts and the composer's matchless rhythmic feel that one most thrills to and remembers. Any enthusiast of orchestral jazz or world music ought to find Schifrin's latest triumph irresistible. --Richard Palmer

Fantastic collection.......2006-08-24
Like others, I was skeptical when I heard about the idea, but this collection easily won me over. What I find so interesting is that the arrangements are so good, so creative, it's as though these well-known classical pieces were *written* as Cuban music. You find yourself completely accepting this genre-bending experiment.
Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".
Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28
Crossover efforts are always risky ventures that dance precariously between creative and contrived. There is definitely some of the latter on this 2002 recording, but surprisingly, far more of the former as the fruitful teaming of three German classical-jazz musicians and a pair of Cuban percussionist/vocalists puts a hearty Latin-flavored spin on some very familiar classics. Two of the Klazz Brothers, pianist Tobias Forster and bassist Killian Forster, took a fortuitous trip to Cuba and concluded the popular classical pieces they usually played could easily be adapted to the Cuban- and Afro-Cuban Jazz styles.
The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.
However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.
A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy/south-american music .......2005-07-28
A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy music which matches wonderfully in my collection. It is trully remarkable to discover the full classical music-education of these performers, which brings them to make this wonderful CD of high-standard music.
Interesting, but need to try harder..........2005-03-27
I found this CD after watching "Collateral". The music sounds very interesting when classic melodies blended with swing and jazz. But they sticked to the originial notes too much. I wish they could have created more variations and improvisation. Also, in this "Classic Meets Cuba" CD, the Cuba part needs to be emphasized more (putting them into a central stage in some tracks; the solo in the Fur Elise track is a good example) rather than treating the percussion beats as peripheral background. Taking the advantage of these vivid beats could further set the musicians free from the original notes. Overall, this is a good CD and is perfect for smooth jazz lover. Hope they can try harder and do more in their up-coming new release-Jazz Meets Cuba.

GREAT MUSIC!!! TERRIBLE RECORDING and PERFORMANCES!!!.......2004-09-02
This recording has been one of the greatest disappointments in my cd collector memory. Dutoit has NO idea about the proper style with which to play this music (music I have conducted in performance with professional orchestras) and the recording is an acoustical disaster.
Why did the engineers for this recording place microphones so close to the bandoneon (an accordion with buttons instead of keys, central to the performance of tango and Piazzolla's solo instrument) that one can hear every mechanical noise it makes -- even the valves opening and closing over the reeds??? Worse still, the orchestra sounds like the microphones were hung in one very soupy room and the musicians were recorded distantly. In essence the orchestra and the bandoneon do not sound in the proper sonic perspective -- much less in the same room!
The glissandos in the strings in the TANGAZO are wrong! They are way too slow and sloppy. Dutoit could have listened to any number of tango recordings and found the proper style. What a shame!
I can hardly wait for these engineers to do a recording of John Field's Nocturnes played on a celesta with REALLY close microphones so we can hear the inner clunky life of that instrument, as well!
My search for Oblivion has a happy ending........2002-06-02
Recently, I attended a concert by a chamber orchestra on tour. The printed program for the concert was largely "standard fare." There were then two encores, one of which I knew had to have been the work of Astor Piazzolla, but a Piazzolla work I hadn't recalled ever hearing. (I can't claim to have a particularly large library of Piazzolla works, but the library had already included the more popular successes by the Kronos Quartet, Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma.) Summoning up my courage after the concert, I went backstage to ask one of the musicians what the Piazzolla encore was. The answer was "Oblivion" (and I was, fortunately, not embarrassed by having to ask who the composer was; the absence of the near-obligatory bandoneon in this chamber orchestra did not "throw me off-track").
Well, I just had to have a recording of "Oblivion" after hearing that encore. And an Amazon search led me to this superb recording by Charles Dutoit and the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, with "Oblivion" smack-dab in the middle of things (track 6 of 11); a centerpiece of sorts.
If there is a sadder, more wistful and languorous work than this brief piece, I have yet to hear it. (Some of the piano works of Eric Satie may come close, but they still miss by the proverbial mile.) "Oblivion" has a way of insinuating itself under your skin, and one wants to hear it again and again; I listened to it three times in succession before I played the entire CD. Scored (by Piazzolla) for strings, oboe solo and bandoneon obbligato, it is simply magical. And quite addictive.
While the attention paid to Piazzolla always seems to be in the context of his tangos, he was nonetheless a trained serious composer, studying with Alberto Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger. The Ginastera connection comes through in a few of the selections here, most obviously in the "Danza criolla" and somewhat less obviously in others (such as the third movement of "Tres movimientos tanguisticos porteños").
The most famous work here - "Adiós Nonino" - was written by Piazzolla in memory of his father. About the work, Piazzolla wrote, "Perhaps I was surrounded by angels. I was able to write the the finest tune I have written. I don't know if I will ever do better. I doubt it." It is a fine and beautiful work indeed, and his abilities as an orchestrator of no mean skill show through clearly.
The remainder of the works are equally fine, and at nearly 76 minutes, this CD can be considered a bargain. Perhaps (to me, at least) the best part of these selections is that all were orchestrated by Piazzolla and that Dutoit respects this integrity by not only playing them as Piazzolla had arranged them, but with a truly idiomatic feel for the style as well.
Back to that performance of "Oblivion" that it was my pleasure to hear. It was an arrangement for string orchestra, and as a result it was with neither oboe nor bandoneon. In that respect, it was "special," and I passed this thought on to the chamber orchestra "powers that be." Perhaps one day it will show up at these Amazon product pages. In the meantime...
If your knowledge of the tango is limited to the ballroom dancing variety, or to the "required element" in ice dancing, this delicious Piazzolla album may not be for you. But it is surely a required element for anyone who enjoys Piazzolla's music.

Dutch Royal Wedding.......2002-02-04
On 02.02.2002 Dutch Royal Prince Willem-Alexander married his Argentinian Maxima. During the church ceremony they played Piazola's Adios Nonino which caused many sentimental tears.
Moreover a special choice while Maxima's father was not allowed to attend this royal wedding due to his participation on the Junta Regime.
( bye, bye pappa is the translation of Adios Nonino....)
Music which goes straight to heart.

Maybe it is not a perfect recording,
maybe you can find some poor sound quality (not about play itself),
But it's the best play for my soul.
I think it's the cure for your sadness. Not for happy people.

Such a title should deserve better quality... Other CDs of Piazzolla are much better.

Steeped in controversy upon its release in 1973, director Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris has since been called everything from nonutilitarian pornography to a cinematic masterpiece. Two key elements that Bertolucci utilized to breath life into Tango's nihilistic themes and the dark, obsessive relationship at its core were Marlon Brando's harrowing, largely improvised performance and the erotically charged jazz score of self-taught Latin sax virtuoso Gato Barbieri. While the musician's main theme has become a much-covered jazz standard, it's but a tantalizingly sexy sample of the cross-cultural stylings at work in this masterful score. While Barbieri rerecorded the core of his Tango music in lush, fleshier arrangements for the soundtrack album's initial release, this Ryko edition (nearly twice the length of the original) augments those tracks with a compelling half-hour suite of cues culled directly from the film's scoring sessions. By turns stark and sentimental, erotic and experimental, these previously unreleased cues form a revelatory new "second movement" to Barbieri's hauntingly familiar score. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A rare and great jazz soundtrack.......2003-10-19
The movie was shocking enough, but the music from the soundtrack blew me away, just listening to the music can recall every graphic and tragic image of the film. Its the frist time I every appreatiated that gerne of music its as classic as any music score every created, Brennie Herman would be proud or was if he had the chance to hear this wonderful movie score.
Here you can listen to your favorite scenes........2002-03-04
I first felt in love in Last Tango In Paris by listening to Marlena Shaw singing "Last Tango In Paris," just the tunes captured me. Later I bought the film, and one step further I bought this CD. Here I can listen to my favorite scene, i.e., the dancing scene from the "The Last Tango in Paris Suite 2-4", and other extra songs, e.g., "Why Did She Choose You?," "Goodbye." And it does not stop here, the CD inlay gives you memorable photos from behind the scenes, the motion picture itself, and two ca. A 4 posters (not separated, one on each side).
Strongly recommended for Last Tango fans.
Perfect Reminder Of My #1 Film.......2000-12-04
If you don't love the movie as much as I do, this might not be a 5 star album for you. Since it recalls the film perfectly for me, it makes that grade. Normally, I do not listen to tango music but again, it fits with the film. It is a very lush and beautiful score and, like all soundtracks, it has many repetitive elements. It is all instrumental. It can be very bold and strident at some points so be ready for that facet if you are trying it out over a candlelit dinner! If you are not a fan of the film, I would advise you to listen to selections from it first.
A CLASSIC REPACKAGED...FINALLY!.......2000-11-07
Well, it's about time! This wonderful soundtrack has been out-of-print for about 15 years since UA folded, so imagine my elation when I glimpsed that it not only included all the standard cuts from the 72 release, but the long-awaited original cues from the film itself (Gato and Oliver Nelson re-recorded the themes for the 72 soundtrack)!
Granted, I've listened to these songs so many times in the passing decades that at moments they teeter into parodies of tango, but that's not Gato's fault; it's just cognitive dissonance. Aside from the great "Ballad" treatment of the raw main theme, there's the rapturous "La Vuelta", "Return" and, best of all, "Why Did She Choose You?", which will knock over anyone who spent a rainy day in Europe loving or lamenting love with a cigarette and a cup of espresso.
Special mention must be made of the original sound cues included herein for the first time on disc. I was always peeved they were missing from the 72 release. The killer cut is the first of the suite of 28 cues which was used over the Francis Bacon paintings for the Main Title sequence. Oh, this is so low and raw and beautiful, and Bacon's paintings of distorted men and women are forever wedded in my mind with these mournful strains.
Jazz Maestro Oliver Nelson has done an excellent job of draping Gato's gutter-cry sax with lush strings, and the orchestrations get even more interesting on the "Suite" of cues to follow. In the decades since this film arrived, I've yet to hear another score with these peculiar colors, which for lack of a more appropriate word, can only be described as "uterine" in the best sense.
Praise to Rykodisc for going the extra mile here. I do wish the cover art was a booklet instead of a fold out, and an enhanced trailer clip would have been swell, but, nah, small complaint.
erotic, passionate, intoxicating, enveloping.......1999-07-10
I have searched for close to 25 years for "Last Tango" CD. The music is absolutely breathtaking and haunting. It's one of those albums that will stay a rare classic for years to come...

you will love forever the music of Manuel de Falla.......2007-06-11
The first time I listen the music of this compositor, was in this cd,15 years ago, now, I love de Falla, Paco De Lucia, I love Spain, this is the real soul of the spanish people!
Great!
Increible.......2003-01-16
No hay mejor. Esta musica durara por siempre.
hot modern flamenco, great percussion & de falla covers.......2000-12-04
a very nice surprise that will please both guitar purist and the fan of interesting world music. de lucia's acoustic renditions of manuella de falla's classical pieces accompanied by wood percussion intruments really bears no equal.
Magnificent!.......2000-08-21
How anyone can give this absolutely classic and definitive work anything less than 5 stars is a mystery to me. There is universal agreement that Paco de Lucia is the world's greatest flamenco guitarist -- yea, verily, the world's greatest guitarist, period. And this masterpiece of rendering Falla's work is flawless and utterly inspired. Falla would have loved this.
A Molotov Cocktail of classical and flamenco-- furious stuff.......2000-01-31
There's a sense of urgency throughout this album that makes it one of De Lucia's most exhilerating. The effect is achieved by the deft use of percusion and electric bass as well as the intriguing yet cohesive blend of classical and flamenco schools. The music straddles both worlds, giving the songs more suggestiveness and freeedom while at the same time retaining a strong sense of form. De Falla's compositions are tight and fast yet grandiose and ambitious. It's music full of punch and a showcase of sheer relentless inventiveness. Add to this De Lucia's furious playing and one has a hybrid whose influences may be self-evident but whose effect is stunning, to say the least. There's a definite modern sound to this album, although the arrangements themselves are sparse, that gives it a dynamism seldom found in other De Lucia works.

Customer Reviews:
The best guitar duo in the world plays Lobos & Marlos Nobre.......2001-04-22
Sergio & Odair Assad made the world most famous guitar duo. They play in such a incredible virtuosistic and musical way, that you can hear them like a gigantic guitar, listining as a 12 strings guitar, never like two different instruments.I listen this beautiful CD many times, always astonished by the extraordinary musicality of the two musicians. The repertoire it is not the best, mixing some easy writing popular stuff with the work of two truly genius of the latin-american music, Villa-Lobos (Choros nº5/Lenda do Caboclo) and MARLOS NOBRE, the heir of Villa-Lobos, the world famous composer of our time in Latin-America, with the gems of the two-guitar repertoire, a truly favourite pieces, his "Cantiga de Cego", "Capoeira", "Martelo" and "Praiana" from his 15 pieces of the cycle "Ciclos Nordestinos I,II and III". This music it is the truly revelation and discover of this CD. The Duo Assad must now record the whole 15 pieces of this genial work from Marlos Nobre.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performance of Waltzes.......2000-12-23
In this CD performed by André Rieu, waltz music takes a very different path in sound and style. It is not as all the other walzes by Strauss that we have listened before, since it has the very special Rieu's magical touch. Even when the titles of the songs are in spanish, anyone can identify the waltzes with just the listening of the first bars. It is all wonderful. In these performances of Strauss Waltzes, the piano is arrenged, included and heard in those waltzes where it was usually absent. In the song "Strauss y Compañia", the music of Strauss is very well mixed with that of other composers; it is like a popurri of Strauss Waltzes very well mixed and played. Also, "Golondrinas de Austria", is an excellent example of the beautiful melody of the Strauss, not written by Johann but written by his brother Joseph, it is not less than any of Johann's music. All in all, this CD contains some of the best waltz music that one can listen to with the different and fabulous sound that André Rieu has to offer us.

Vince Guaraldi -- The Charlie Brown Suite.......2006-11-10
Outstanding, especially the Peppermint Patty song. Essential for any Guaraldi fan.
...Classical...Jazz...Charlie Brown... .......2006-06-22
I was never a big fan of the Charlie Brown, sure I watched them but was never a fan. So I didn't think I would like this that much(it was a gift). But I was wrong.
I may have gotten the wrong CD if I wanted to hear Charlie Brown. This adds lots of extras to the original songs that appeared in the show specials, new instruments being the main addition. I did latter purchase the Christmas Show soundtrack, and I must say I like this one better. Charlie Brown enthusiest hate me for saying that but like I said I was never a fan of the original shows.
But this CD did have its faults with me. One being that at times I had to look down at my CD player and see how long I had been listening to the current song(that only happened to me like twice). And when you find yourself doing that you know that thats not the best album in the world. I think songs should leave you wanting more not asking when will this be over.
Despite that its still good, I liked most of the live "Suite" stuff being a big fan of live music. And at around eleven or twelve bucks you can't really go wrong.
Peace Kevin
Excellent.......2006-03-13
These are the Charlie Brown tunes -arranged for jazz orchestra by Vince Guaraldi. Vince and the trio are front and center throughout.
It takes a little bit of musical maturity to be able to appreciate these tracks.
So listen to the clips. They speak for themselves.
mmmmmmm......Vince Guaraldi with strings...........2005-12-22
This album is certainly not for the faint of heart...If you just want to hear some Charlie Brown music, go get the original sdtk to the christmas special.
On the other hand, if you really appreciate the twisted melodic genious of Guaraldi (like I do), this album is a must. I picked up this cd on a whim to preview it at Borders, and was blown away. Once I realized that the track 'Happiness Is' is actually a slower version of the 'Great Pumpkin Waltz' with strings, my jaw dropped. Then halfway through the song, Vince comes in with this solo that sends chills down my spine! And the fact that it's at a slower tempo allowed him to really take his time in expressing himself. Man...talk about sick!!! that track was worth the price alone. Then as I listened to the rest, and I found more great gems...like the way Vince playfully bounces around over the wonderfully melancholy arrangement of 'Rain Rain Go Away', and how vince musically captures the quirkiness of 'Peppermint Patty'.
And mind you that the majority of these tracks are live...no studio retakes...every lick Vince plays is improv.
Although there are some doubtful renditions on this album - like Linus and Lucy (a little too abstract for my taste), there are great finds on this cd well worth the price for the V.G. fan!
My new favorite Guaraldi album.......2005-10-23
Fans of jazz AND classical will both love this.
When I first heard the Charlie Brown suite, I thought it was a studio recording. I was surprised when I read it was recorded live at Mr. D's in San Francisco. Imangine being there when it happened - enjoying a martini in the darkened room while watching Vince jam to Peppermint Patty. He kicks ass on this.
Vince's brilliant arrangements for the full orchestra truly enhances the music, without overpowering his piano. Peppermint Patty and Red Baron are better versions than the original because 1) they are played on piano instead of harpsichord as the originals were and 2) Vince knew how to use the orchestra to emphasize certain chord passages, making it better than on piano alone. A huge bonus is the live version of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". The whole album is great!
