It's occasionally hard to wrap one's American boy-band-addled brain around the idea, but there is a world across the ocean in which blustery A&R execs aren't the musical tastemakers--the DJs are. Imagine that. You could say that one in particular, acid-jazz kingpin Mr. Gilles Peterson, is chiefly responsible for giving jazz back to the entire under-40 U.K. population. So when a compilation by someone like that hits the streets, it's understandably cause for celebration. The bad news is that the original double-disc import edition has been hobbled at the knees for its domestic release. The much better news is that the single CD that remains is still as gorgeously diverse as Peterson's radio shows. It features tons of jazz (most notably saxophonist Pharoah Sanders) and vibraphonist Roy Ayers), heartbreaking soul (Minnie Riperton), sultry hip-hop (Handsome Boy Modeling School) and DJ Vadim), and otherwise indescribable journeys (Soul Dhamma's "Flower," Nuyorican Soul's piano-backed Balearic cocktail "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun"). The entire urban music spectrum holds hands and sways in harmony under Mr. Peterson's direction. --Bob Michaels

Phenomenal, must-have CD.......2004-08-01
Flavalicious Beats.......2004-03-27
Amazing journey between genres, but BUY THE IMPORT (2-disc).......2002-11-05
Gilles' best to date.......2001-12-21
Finally, another recommendation for a CD which opens up whole new worlds: Kruder & Dorfmeister's brilliant, brilliant entry in the DJ Kicks series. Gilles would have been proud.
Spectacular, but buy the import CD.......2001-10-02
Because of this eclectic and obscure range, no matter how sophisticated you are, you will learn something about music by listening to this CD. I've listened to Peterson's Worldwide on KCRW for several years, and his range and influence and knowledge smack you in the face. He is most famous for starting Talking Loud and with it the Acid Jazz movement, which is in 2001 returning in full force in the nu-jazz movement (cf: Jazzanova, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Beatless, Nathan Haines, Truby Trio, Afronaut, and so on). But the range on this disk isn't just NEW music, and it isn't just JAZZ music, it's everything old and new, and that it is mixed together so smoothly is proof that Gilles Peterson is the world's greatest DJ. He is the DJ's DJ's DJ.
BUY THE IMPORT!!, it isn't just worth the extra money it is a spectacular deal. Precious gems. Something for everyone but for those with discerning taste for the greatest and most underground in any genre, it's diamonds and solid gold.
