A great trio.......2005-12-10
The interplay on this cd is beautiful. Just put this one in your disc-player and relax. 'Waltz new' is my favorite track - John Abercrombie is not only a great guitarist - he can also write a pretty tune. You will not find another trio that has the unique sound of Gateway - and this is one of their best albums together.
Jazz trio at its best.......2004-05-13
Gateway consists of John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, three very popular and routine jazz musicians. They gathered for a gig in 1975 on the ECM label resulting in the album "Gateway". Two years later, they recorded "Gateway 2". After a 17 year long break from the group (Jack DeJohnette still played on some of John Abercrombie's records - notably "Timeless"), they recorded "Homecoming". They three of them comes with totally fresh minds, which make the recording a joy to listen to.
The 12 minute starting tune - the title track 'Homecoming' - is an up-tempo, creative fully which fulfill all expectations. 'Waltz New' is a bit slower, but it's very interesting too. 'Short Cut' begins slow, but with its swinging rhytm evolves into a song reminding me of a standard played by the Standards Trio; it has the same quality, notably because of Jack DeJohnette, but also Abercrombie's melodic discoveries. 'How's Never' is a funky, rock-style, groovy tune which with the sound of the jazz guitar makes it very interesting. On the last song, "Oneness", Jack DeJohnette plays piano, which he manages nicely, although it's not a very difficult tune, but the underlying harmonies created by the piano suites the acoustic guitar and the double-bass very good.
Altogether "Homecoming" is a great album, perhaps most so because of the long experience playing together. I really love how the drums match the guitar in a way that none of them is on the sideline. Everybody is contributing all the time. If you like guitar and jazz, don't hesitate to listen to or even buy this album.
Deep Explorations by Masters of their Craft..........2000-09-21
This record and it's companion (Homecoming) are truly a pair of wonderful,"jazz" trio cd's. All three of the players Abercrombie, Holland and Dejonette are indidually masters of their crafts. Abercrombie moves in an out of sounds with incredible ease, at one moment sounding like Joe Pass the next like some "outside" distorted tonmeister. However, the notes are just "there", not calculated in any way, just kind of pulled out of the air. Saying Hollands bass is lyrical, substantial and supportive does not do him justice, one of the best upright players around. Dejonett's drumming sounds effortless and melodic. He has superb touch and control and his cymbal work is truly outstanding.
The whole cd sounds just as if the three players were communicating effortlessly to extract music that already exists. But enought of my extistential nonesense! It's a great cd with incradible depth and texture and offers many hours of exploration. Each time you put it on there is something new to be heard, some nuance that you missed the last time. Very highly recommended!
A must-have.......2000-05-11
If you like any of these artists, this one's a keeper. One of my absolute favorite CDs -- energetic, swinging, lovely, introspective.
A Stunning return for the Gateway Trio.......1998-10-02
An almost miraculous blending of three of the major players in the world of Jazz. Each player seems quite capable of playing through large passages of free Jazz and yet never leaving the other guys behind. Thsi is music on a higher level. Sit back, shut your eyes and enjoy. These guys are painting wonderful musical pictures in your mind! Highlights: Jack's drumming throughout, and Dave's solo in the title track. If you want to be transported off to a better place, then I can't recommend this album highly enough.

Album Description
This is the third in a series of recordings designed to provide square dancing enjoyment to persons with little or no square dancing experience. In this CD a number of popular square dances have been recorded. These dances have been chosen for their variety and ability to teach the dancers additional calls or basics of square dancing. As in the other CD's in the series, the chief end of any dancing is the enjoyment received. So to increase the pleasure, all directions for each dance are listed in the CD booklet along with the calls as they are heard on the recording. In this series vocal instruction has been recorded so dancers will receive the same type of instruction they would receive if the caller was present with them.
In this third album the following new calls will be introduced: Right Hand Star, Left Hand Star, Courtesy Turn, and Two Ladies Chain. In addition to these basics the following other basics from previous lessons are used: Honors, Circle, Walk, Forward and Back, Swing, Square Identification, Pass Thru, U-Turn Back, Promenade, Split the Ring, Separate, Do-sa-do, Lead to the Right, Grand Right and Left, Allemande Left, Frontier Whirl, Dive Thru.
This recording features part 1 with vocal instruction and music with calls and part 2 with music alone for your enjoyment.

Come Dance With Me The Old-Fashioned Way........2006-09-23
This dance music for youngsters goes right along with the animal biology as 'Bunny Hop,' 'Alley Cat' 'Chicken Dance' -- all are named after animals. I missed out on the Chicken Dance, but I understand that it was very popular at the 1982 World's Fair. I did enjoy 'Hokey Pokey' and Al Gore actually did the 'Macarena' on television. 'Ballin' the Jack' gets your heart and energy pumping. These are not what you might hear on radio, as we tend to listen to the music which spoke to us during our growing-up period of life. To watch people my age and ten-twenty years younger trying to mimic the words to the songs I loved makes me want to sit tight and be quiet. We outgrow our teen years when it was cute to act silly, but white hair and 60s, 70s, 80s just don't jive. I missed the 60s except for Barry White and that type. Folk songs were not my cup of tea, either. This selection of dance songs is old fashioned for today's youth, but reminiscent of other ages for the older group of music lovers.
Not the original artists?.......2000-04-27
I bought this disc (from another retailer) and it was not what I expected. These certainly aren't the versions that were made famous. In particular, I wanted the Club Med "Hands Up!" song, or something close. The version on this disc sounds more like "Easy Listening" than dance music. Probably great for a more subdued party atmosphere... or in case you own a chain of elevators.
Not what I expected.......2000-02-11
this cd is not that good at all The only song I like is the macarena. I brought it & wish I hadn't
NOT WHAT I EXPECTED!.......1999-07-28
THE ONLY GOOD SONG ON THIS CD IS THE CHICKEN DANCE. THE REST OF THE SONGS ARE NOT BY THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS! IT REMINDS ME OF RETIREMENT HOME, BIG BAND MUSIC

Essential CD for the Creative Musician.......2007-05-27
As a Rock based drummer seeking creative inspiration, this CD (along with anything that Miles did....and those involved with him) was the key to another world. I always look forward to hearing it and turning others onto it because it is truly one of the most exciting, creative and inspirational CD's that I own. It is like Jazz musicians rocking out, but in a way that was fresh compared to the typical 70's fusion that came to represent the genre(or sub-genre).This to me represents Music as Art...period.
Gateway...apt title indeed..........2006-08-25
This album is completely mindblowing. From the cascading guitar runs to the heroic and athletic drums, let alone the magnificent bass lines. This is the ULTIMATE POWER TRIO! Rush: eat yer heart out! Peace - jacobs
Spooky Fusion and Ferocious Jazz Brilliance.......2004-12-09
This 1975 release on the ECM label had more ferocity and fangs than your average ECM disc of the time. Having come fresh off a recording session with Oregon's Colin Walcott for his Cloud Dance album, the three musicians decided to stir up some electrified and inspired mayhem of their own.
Bassist Dave Holland leads the charge on "Backwoods Song", starting innocently enough with a country-ish groove, then enters DeJohnette to give it further drive, then Abercrombie steers it toward the outer fringes of the woods, so to speak, with a vaguely unsettling, warbling melody, leading to a bluesy turnaround. From there, JA takes you to the darkest most unknown parts of these woods with his relentless guitar musings. "Waiting" is Dave Hollands' hypnotic bass solo piece that definitely conveys that feeling very well in fact. "May Dance" is a sunnier, more upbeat bop-inspired romp with Abercrombie leading the way with a clean yet edgy jazz tone from his axe.
Things get more intense with "Unshielded Desire" a duet of Abercrombie and DeJohnette that recalls the fiery exchanges of Coltrane and Elvin Jones from a decade earlier, both musicians relentlessly search for new melodic ideas as the piece almost blows itself apart. "Jamal" is a beautifully mysterious and enigmatic interaction between Abercrombie and Holland, To close on a high note, there is "Sorcery 1", starting with menacing spook noises from Abercrombie and equally menacing percussion noises weave in and out, building in intensity until Abercrombie roars in with some of the spookiest long sustained notes this side of Hendrix as DeJohnette unleashes violent explosions of drums and cymbals while Holland roars authoritatively underneath them eventually winding down as spooks are flying out of the speakers (LOL).
As is typical with ECM recordings, the overall ambience is spacious as all outdoors, yet the instruments are so crisp (especially drums and bass) while Abercrombie is recorded with just enough reverb and distance to give him, to my ears, one of the most genuinely unsettling, spooky and unique electric guitar sounds of the time, he sounded like NOBODY else.
Fusion with a strong emphasis on the JAZZ part of the equation with that kind of looseness combined with the ferocity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. A great postcard from when creativity was the norm!
The Lyrical Swing of Dave Holland.......2004-07-05
Somewhat rawer in both tone and composition than your average ECM mid-70s release, this first meeting between guitarist Abercrombie, bassist Holland and drummer DeJohnette grooves along with the fire of early fusion (Abercrombie's tone is usually clean, yet he's clearly capable of exploding into shards of noise, and just dig DeJohnette's peerless attack), yet remains true to the melodic & structural compexities of classic jazz. The highlights are many, yet it's the relentless swing of Dave Holland on the opener, 'Back-Woods Song' that continues to draw me in. Essential for electric guitar fans, and a good investment for any jazz enthusiast.
a postcard from a moment when things were possible.......2000-11-16
Its sort of depressing to listen to this cd in 2000. In 1975 when it came out it was possible for three really open musicians to get together, play some pretty over-the-top music, and here's the depressing part, ACTUALLY GET IT RECORDED AND WIDELY DISTRIBUTED. These guys were alternative before the term was coined. Some electronica fan will probably write the same review in 25 years after that genre gets codified if it hasn't already.
OK, so much for the sociology, how about the music? Imagine Hendrix hadn't died, and instead found a rhythm section that was his creative match. Serious electric guitar without the how-many-notes-per-second-can-I-play mindlessness into which both fusion and heavy metal would degenerate. "Backwoods Song" with its simple bass groove opens the album and draws in the listener. "Unshielded Desire" states emphatically that this ain't your father's jazz, and "Sorcery I," which closes, is a kind of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" for intellectuals.

Bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette have often worked together since their early work with Miles Davis, and they're one of the most accomplished rhythm sections in jazz--fluent, inventive players who add something special to every situation they're heard in. The Gateway trio with guitarist John Abercrombie, though, is one of their most effective vehicles, with an open sound that reveals every detail and encourages an interactive approach. Each member is a gifted improviser, and they're willing to trust spontaneous forms, setting this 1977 session in motion with the extended "Opening," a long group improvisation launched by DeJohnette's detailed drumming. The interplay is just as arresting on the more formal pieces. Abercrombie's "Sing Song" floats at a medium tempo, and the guitarist plays with singing and sustained clarity before Holland solos with a forceful precision. Holland's "Nexus" is an accelerated stream of particles in motion, while "Reminiscences," with almost acoustic guitar, and "Blue," with DeJohnette on piano, are reflective moments enlivened by the same close listening. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
3 Great improvisers COOK.......2007-05-15
I have owned this since the day it was released as an LP. The interplay &
imrovisation between these 3 musicians is almost scary. Their dynamic
range & sense of melody (this applies to Mr.Dejohnette's drummimg as well)comes from years of playing together in different formats. The tunes on this one just sail. If you bought only 1 record with them on it, this
should be it. It is now 30 years since I first heard this & I still
consider it a favorite despite having a sizable jazz library. It's been too long since the last Gateway recordings on ECM. And somebody ask Mr. Abercrombie to break out that Fender electric mandolin.
The better "Gateway" album.......2005-12-31
If you get one of the "Gateway" albums, this is the one to get. Jack D. sounds good on piano on the simple "Blue," too--it is a better version than the one on Holland's "Triplicate."
,
The next gateway - further explorations of the Gateway Trio.......2001-11-22
John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack Dejohnette reunited in the second offering of the Gateway trio. The music on this CD is more intriguing than their first offering, and is glued together more closely than before. Dejohnette's rolling drums is met with Holland's thoughtful and bold bass lines, providing a rich landscape for Abercrombie's lucid lines on the guitar.
The magic between the three players is obvious from the first track "Opening": thumping bass and drums underlying Abercrombie's avant-garde guitar improvisations slowly but surely building in collective improvisation. In "Sing Song", one of my favourite tunes, Abercrombie's craftily contructed melodic lines is counterbalanced by Holland's warm embrace on the bass, giving a very sentimental dialog rounded up with Dejohnette's lyrical lines on the drums.
This album is a glimpse at the future of jazz from the 70's: very sparse structures building itself through contructive communication between the players in real-time. Simply a timeless classic that I keep finding myself back to again and again.
OVERLOOKED GEM!.......2000-03-01
The 2nd "GATEWAY" release is much more thoughtful and sedate but no less involving than the other titles by Abercrombie, Holland and DeJohnette. "OPENING" is a perfect start---DeJohnette using his percussion to brilliant effect (and closing the track also) with Holland dropping in for some limber bass that gets things rolling and Abercrombie's ethereal guitar creating the magic that sets him apart from ANY fret man in jazz. The typical ECM sound is here and kudos to Manfred Eicher for producing this and many classic albums of this stature. If you're a fan of any of the gentlemen featured here, this is a great trio CD and should not be missed.

Gigantic Wall Of Sound.......2006-05-29
Bongzilla's 'Getaway' has one of the largest, fuzziest, monumental guitar tones I have ever put my ears through. Smoking dope is the priority for these guys, and making an album full of unbelievably fatass riffs must come a close second. My only problem is the vocal department, Id actually rather it not be there. The singer is mostly drained out by the huge guitars, but nonetheless his screechy thin voice is a little on the grating side after a while, hence 4 not 5 stars.
But frankly I don't mind too much when the band come out with riff onslaughts such as the opener 'Greenthumb'. You think you've heard the guitar tone and the drums, you think the riff they're playing is as heavy as it gets, `cos its pretty daym heavy. Then suddenly they hit the pedal that must be labelled 'MONSTER FUZZ' as your head is cleanly swiped off. Rarely can a stoner/doom band take a very simple riff and blow you away by the sheer enormity of their sound. Many try, but most become boring. Bongzilla perfect this.
And they can create song structures too, my biggest complaint for fellow riff-monsters Electric Wizard who often sacrifice this area. The title track, and my personal highlight showcases their ability to write sections inside a song with varying time signatures and tempo changes. The main riff is also huge by the way, in case you doubted.
If you're into stoner/doom metal, and you have an addiction to colossal riffs with giant fuzz tones, then do yourself a favour and get this one. My only complaint is the rather grating vocals that detract a star, but apart from that this is a fine addition to your collection.
For fans of Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, Karma to Burn, Sleep...
rocky mountain, take me to the sky.......2004-04-16
First off, Bongzilla rules, especially their more recent stuff like "Gateway" and "Apogee." Bongzilla plays the perfect kind of stoner/doom metal: completely heavy, but with a deep sense of groove that gets you nodding your heavy-lidded head along with them. Standout tracks are "Greenthumb," "Sunnshine Green," and "Keefmaster."
a boot full of sludgey stoner rock, ready to kick your ass.......2003-10-30
bongzilla keeps on with the stereotype, but its aaaaaa ooookkkkaaayyy brother. besides the obvious lyrical content, this is disturbingly brutal, and crushing stoner rock that's faster than most stoner bands. like a blur of heaviness, that brings you to the "top of the keef moutain"
buy it
definetely buy it
hadn't really heard anything from them, but.............2003-07-21
I saw them at a local pizzeria tonight in Nashville and they were an extemily heavy/intense act with a groove along the lines of earlier Sleep albums I believe. Yea, I'm not usually too into the "gutteral" vocal style either but live it just upped the intensity and wasn't excessive, used appropriately I guess. I wouldn't really have known the lyrics are [substance] related, I just got thought the overall feel/vibe was slowly/deeply medatative with a nice balance of bass-driven sludge and possessed roaring. maybe a cross between the melvins and "today is the day." Definitely worth my [money] though.
The pinnacle of stoner rock.......2003-07-10
This album has everything you could look for in stoner rock... heavy ... riffs that are catchy and pleasing to the ear. Nothing compares to jumping in your car, putting on your 70's aviator sun glasses, and putting in this cd at full volume. Seriously, this album is perfect for driving. The band takes the southern grooves of Eyehategod, add in various marijuana-related samples, and puts an almost black metalish screeching voice over it all. This combines to make a really unique and fresh sound. Once again, Relapse has the best selection in bands.
