Tumbleweed Connection is part of the early catalog of Elton John's work that Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose reportedly once said he would love to own the publishing rights to as a work of art. Indeed, it does contain some of John's most expressive work as an artist, but with the showy stage presence and pop melodicism still under construction. Tumbleweed is characterized by John's balladeer approach, with John at his storyteller best on songs like "Burn Down the Mission." Even if the lyrics were generally written by Bernie Taupin, John's voice and inflection made every song seem deeply personal. The beautiful "Come Down in Time" displays the subtleties and sophistication of his talent, with the piano not yet serving as the instrumental focal point it would later become. The album also features the favorite "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun" and "Where to Now St. Peter?" --Steve Gdula

good, classic Elton!.......2007-05-13

I used to have this album in the LP form when a teen. It has some great stuff on it, particularly "country comfort" and "my father's gun". The latter was recently featured in "Elizabethtown" and was just perfect. The songs are long, as some were in the 70's, but many of Elton's were such masterpieces. Some of the other songs are pretty good, but none as good as the ones I mentioned, at least for my taste. However, Madman across the Water is a great song, and has some fantastic electric guitar, if you are a fan of that. The 70's sure was a good time for electric guitar! enjoy this excursion into the 70's with Elton.

Must Have, Great from Begining to End.......2007-04-04

Most reviews get hung up on comparing artists or styles. Well laets face it all that matters is the music. If you want a cd that you can put on, and enjoy it from start to finish then search no longer. We can discuss different styles during different periods in eltons career all day, but most will agree that around this period he was becoming his most productive. Nowadays it is customary to have a hit single or two, and have them on a cd. Yet things were not as corporate at the time, Elton and Bernie went for the music. Not really trying to theme anything, yet Bernies love of America, and the american west does come thru. Otherwise this is a collection of simply great songs. Granted each will not be your favorate, but you will enjoy them nonetheless. Simple basic, not overly produced, but not unplugged either. Love songs, heartfelt songs with yearning, and vibrant lyrics. Weaving a tapestry in sound. I won't cover individual songs because they are to your taste. But there is something for everyone, and taken as a whole, you will be surprisingly happy at the time spent.

Not Yellow Brick Road.......2007-03-15

I have most of Eltons albums and this is the one I've played the most over the years. Heavily influnced by The Band, this captures Elton at the start of his golden period. I don't think he's ever beaten this album. However Yellow Brick Road this is not! Country/blues/folk is where this album takes its roots from.
Eltons Piano playing is heard at its best on this album, high in the mix a lot of the time, and not drowned by other keyboards as on later albums. Listen to Amoreena which has plenty of great Piano playing on it. Another favourite on this album is My Fathers Gun, not to mention Burn Down The Mission which Elton still plays to this day (37 years later).
This could almost be classed as roots music now. It sounds absurd doesn't it, Elton John roots music, but people forget that behind the glitz and the showman, Elton is primarily a songwriter and musician. Listen to this album and forget the newspaper headlines!

elton's best. a masterpiece from 1971........2007-03-13

lately elton has awaken from the slumbers of about 30 years in the land of mediocrity, having released three good albums in a row (last years "captain and the kid" was very fine, in particular). that said, however; he still stands miles away from the 1971 masterpiece "tumbleweed connection," which is easily his best album. a gritty, soulful set of fantastic songs, with blues and country overtones, "tumbleweed" is a high point of the early seventies music scene. powerful and alive with his most outstanding vocal performances, this would prove an achievement he could never match again. elton made other excellent albums in that era, most notably "honky chateau," "madman across the water," and "goodbye yellow brick road." "captian fantastic & the brown dirt cowboy," from 1975 is pretty darn good, too; but "tumbleweed..." is his most satisfying album through and through. anyone out there who thinks of elton as an overproduced popster, and has yet to hear this recording, would do themselves a favor by purchasing a copy. great stuff.

I'm by no means a funk expert. I spend most of my time listening to the likes of Rush, Porcupine Tree, and Pain of Salvation. But we all have the urge to explore and from time to time get our groove on. The Mothership is the place to do it. This was my first venture into Gearge Clinton's world and it still remains my favorite. From the opening "Do not attempt to adjust your radio," To the closing "Ga Ga Do Ga's" of Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples, This is a masterpiece. Clinton's skills as a songwriter, producer, and band leader are impressive to say the least. Through layers of vocals, horns and Bootsie's bouncing bass he guides his creation on a flawless musical journey. Philosophically he shares a great deal with the practitioners of progressive rock exploreing far and wide, relying on the virtuosity of his bandmates,incorporateing all styles he can get his hands on, and lets face it Bernie Worrell reaches stratospheres Rick Wakeman only dreamed of. The end result is a groove laden voyage to a place somewhere between Shaft and The Outer Limits. It's very strange, very out there, and very satifying.

No other funk album of this era or any other moved me the way this one did,I not only had the pleasure of seeing this tour twice during that time but also actually had the pleasure of hanging out with these guys after one of the shows!, little did I know at the time just how significant this would be, Glen Goins was my all time favorite not to mention the fact that I play guitar as well.
Mike Hampton gave me a couple of picks, I still to this day have them.

Space Is The Place.......2007-01-10

This is funk the way it should be, as Parliament keeps the groove going strong in the original seven cuts, plus one bonus track.

Released in February 1976, the album and the single - Tear The Roof Off The Sucker - charted on both the Billboard pop (album, #13; single, #15) and black charts (album, #4; single, #5). Yes, gotta give a shout out to that music industry segregation!

With Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley adding more power to the horn section - which also featured the Becker Bros. - the trio of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell pen three dynamite numbers; P-Funk, Mothership Connection & Give Up The Funk.

The album is also the debut of Starchild - a character based on Sun Ra's Black Noah - in the P-Funk Mythology. Starchild's life is explained further in the 1976 album, The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein.

Arguably the greatest Parliament album ever, you will wear out the CD before growing tired of the rhythms on Mothership Connection.

Make mine the P-Funk.......2006-12-26

In 1975, the Mothership touched down. Sure, there had been Parliament albums before this, but none had been remotely like this. It's a concept album, but don't let that scare you off, because the concept is funk from outer space that had been stored in the pyramids and was being retrieved by "Star Child". And the whole thing is as utterly goofball as the concept suggests. Okay, onto the music...
Things open with P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up), an excellent intro to the band's new direction if there ever was one. It's eight minutes of groove, with George (and Sir Lollipop Man, alias the long-haired sucka)'s hilarious, offhand spoken comments about how Funk can save your life - but only P-Funk, that is funk played by station WEFUNK, which of course comes from space. The next song, Mothership Connection (Starchild) is arguably the best of the bunch. Of course you can dance to it, and you'll probably end up singing along with the "swing low, sweet chariot stop and/let me ride" bridge. Hell, you might even burst out singing it randomly when it isn't playing. It's happened to me.
You don't hear much about the next three tracks, but they're all worth hearing, too. First off is the ironically funky Unfunky UFO, about saving a "dying world" from its "unfunkiness", which to me means "its lack of peace and unity" - it's amazing just what Clinton could do with the "funk" metaphor. Madcap genius, or what? Anyway, great message, even better song. Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (The Thumps Bump), one of the coolest titles ever (its only rival being Parliament's own Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop)), follows. To me, this stretches the metaphor from last tune - maybe I'm overanalyzing, but if I am I like what I'm picking up. Anyway, this is another unforgettable lost classic. Next is Handcuffs, perhaps the weakest song here, but a great tune that would've led the pack on a lesser disc. It's by far the most traditional thing here, a love (okay, sex) song not related to the concept, and a charming, clever one at that - sort of like Wizard of Finance.
Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) is anthem central. Sure, the lyrics are simple, with just a couple phrases repeated for six minutes. But it's more about the groove than the lyrics - rap would probably NOT have happened without this song, and though I wouldn't complain about that, why blame Parliament for their followers? Anyway, it's a great song - subtle horn arrangement, heavy bass, drums and keyboards (the Bernie Worrel show!), unforgettable intro sung in baritone over percussion (sound like rap to anyone?) Classic stuff. Lastly is Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples. It's hilarious, a chant that begins with "I am high/we are high...". Hilarious!
Of course, Parliament was dominated by George Clinton, but it wouldn't have happened without Bernie Worrell or Bootsy Collins. Long live George, Bernie and Bootsy, everybody's favorite utterly goofball geniuses!

Best Parliament CD.......2006-12-18

This is a great CD by Parliament. When it was first released it was a good CD, but now it has bonus tracks. If you look at their greatest hits CD, you'll notice that the majority of these songs are on there, such as Tear the Roof Off The Sucker and Mothership COnnection.

Beatles.......2007-06-27

A very impressive version of the Beatles songs, again all very tight and professional, a beatle purist should be proud.

Beatle Hootenanny.......2007-05-22

As an inveterate Beatles' fan, I admit I am very picky when it comes to Beatle covers. However, as far as cover versions go, this one is decent. The voices harmonize well and, objectively speaking are good. This collection is like a folk hootenanny treatment of the Beatles' classics.

The only arrangement I didn't like was "A Hard Day's Night." I felt it deviated from the standard Beatle format and I also didn't like the tempo of this arrangement. I would have preferred that the background singing on "Help!" had been omitted; I felt it "cluttered" the song.

All in all, decent. It is what it is - cover versions of timeless Beatle classics. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" was the best performed song on this collection. If you like folk as I do and you enjoy a good hootenanny as I do, then you might enjoy this one.

When the tradition of Western polyphonic singing meets the Beatles - there is much to enjoy.......2007-01-07

The previous reviewers have rightly extolled the virtues of this disc, recorded in 1986. With the King's Singers "Beatles Connection", the tradition of Western polyphonic singing, harking back to Jannequin, Monteverdi and the English Renaissance, meets the art of song writing that the Beatles brought to a degree of perfection.

The results are outstanding. Unlike the "Beatles Go Baroque" collection published by Naxos, in which both traditions are so watered down in the encounter as to loose all spine, here we get the best of both worlds. The full flavour of the original Ballads is there (many of the Greatest Hits are included), as well as the polyphonic art of the King's at its best. One of the nice things about the arrangements is not only that the vocal lines are polyphonically distributed between various singers (achieving results that are oftentimes far more elaborate than the originals), but that the five singers also assume vocally the bass, percussion and instrumental support as well, thanks to an array of da-dams, tshik-tshik and other scat effects. Try trak 9 and 10, it's hard to believe - and great fun to hear!

The disc's liner notes remind us of how far back the relationship between the King's Singers and the Beatles goes: their first album for EMI was produced by no less than the "fifth" Beatle, producer George Martin, and the bass guitarist in that original album became, twenty years later, the producer of the present one. The King's Singers also made the frog chorus in McCartney's "We All Stand Together", and the father of Jeremy Jackman, one of the group's two countertenors (whose brothers are also arranger and sound engineer for the album), was the clarinettist of "When I'm Sixty Four" (in the Sgt. Pepper Album).

There is much to enjoy here, both for the connoisseur (of the Beatles and/or of classical) and for the "layperson".

For the hitherto uninitiated, King's Singers is a famous group of six Englishmen who sing a cappella (without accompaniment). They are at home performing a wide range of material, from classical to popular music.

In this recording, you'll hear many Beatles stand bys, as well as a few not-so-familiar ones-all of them taking a magical twist from the King's Singers rendition. Gershwin via Grusin .......2006-06-21

I am not familiar with the genius of the Gershwins beyond some Bio - documentary footage and word of mouth. So I would not recognize many of his works. However, I am familiar with the sound of Dave Grusin.....and as happens in his past works.....he delivers....with what has to be called "The Grusin Touch !". His Gershwin translations to modern Jazz interpretations are so exquisite.....they embrace you and take you on a sublime musical journey. Kudos to you Dave Grusin......YOU ARE THE JAZZ MAN !!!!

The best heartfelt rendition!.......2005-09-23

This musical rendezvous offered by Dave Cruisin surpassed all my previous expectations.
From the first bars of any track randomly elected, you will be immersed immediately in the most sincere and idiomatic surrounding. The arrangements are simply exquisite and every musician was enraptured to his own. John Patitucci confirms why he was on the top of the line in the list of the best bassists of his generation. Eddie Daniels is simply gorgeous in Clarinet in the track Soon. Gary Burton in the vibraphones, singly spectacular. Chick Corea and Dave make an unforgettable duet in ¨S wonderful. The established Chemistry between Eric Marienthal in Alto Saxophone and Sal Márquez Trumpet, is unequalled. Dave Weckl and Sonny Emory are terrific in the drums too. Finally it' s meritorious the collaboration of Lee Ritenour in Our love is here to stay.
There is no hole in any track. But between you and me if you required my opinion about the three best racks of this golden album I would choose I've got plenty of nothing, in first place, Maybe and Fascinating Rhythm.
The idea of open the CD with the same composer playing himself (That certain feeling) was fascinating, it is like to relive to Gershwin and imagining him smiling and happy with this homage of a group of friends.
I beg you earnestly to acquire this supreme tribute to George Gershwin and if you are a classic music lover - as I do - , the petition would be double.
Recommended without reserves. The best Smooth Jazz album of 1991. And the sound is simply out of this world. GRP made a superb mastering effort.

One of My All-Time Favorites.......2005-02-19

I have been a Gerswhin fan for many, many years, and have several CD compilations of his music. This recording by Dave Grusin, however, is perhaps my favorite. It was actually the first Gershwin collection I purchased (on a cassette tape back in the early 1990s), and I still listen to it so much that I've worn out the tape and two CDs.

Dave Grusin is a true master, and he and the all-star cast of musicians he has assembled on this recording are respectful of Gershwin's music. The creativity of the musicians is astounding. The music flows from them effortlessly, but it all feels well-considered and "tight." Even though there are improvisational stretches in some of the pieces, they fit in to the score so seamlessly that you'd think Gerswhin had placed them there himself.

The final track, "Bess You Is My Woman/I Loves You Porgy" is simply breathtaking. If you buy this CD for no other reason than to hear the final track, it will be worth your money.

Spontaneous Arranging (and James Taylor's new Xmas album).......2005-01-17

America's greatest musical arranger Nelson Riddle confided to a friend, (toward the end of his life in 1985) that he would have traded ALL of his hundreds of arrangements (the absolute favorites of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and other musical giants) in exchange for having written just ONE of the hit songs composed by his contemporary Henry Mancini. (`Hank' wrote numerous award-winning melodies, including two consecutive "Best Song" Oscar-winners --- with lyricist Johnny Mercer.)

Well 20 years later, if he were still with us, I believe Nelson Riddle would express that same longing about the music of Dave Grusin - who like Mancini, is an Oscar-nominated, award-winning composer and arranger. Grusin's evergreen "Cinemagic" album recorded in 1991 with the incomparable London Symphony featured 14 of his movie themes including award winners like "On Golden Pond," "Heaven Can Wait," and "It Might be You" -- the love theme from "Tootsie" (with lyrics by the Bergmans, Alan & Marilyn). What is more, Riddle -- who arranged painstakingly at the piano (not his instrument; he was a trombonist) -- would surely have envied Grusin's command of the piano. And Dave's pianistic prowess was never better displayed than here . . . on this splendid tribute to George Gershwin.

If I listen long enough to the greatest of jazz pianists (Oscar & Bill) eventually I tire of improvisations (having heard everything in their `bag of tricks' --- their repertoire of favorite phrases) and I find myself craving melody, pure and simple. Or else, thematic variations on strong melody -- `counter melodies' if you will --- which are the personal amusements of all great arrangers including (especially) Nelson Riddle.

I think of Dave Grusin as `spontaneous arranger' (my term) rather than a jazz pianist. And I simply adore off-the-cuff, melodic `variations' of the great pianists/composers/arrangers --- such as Henry Mancini. (Andre Previn is another composer/arranger and accomplished pianist). And, in that stratosphere of `eagles' carried aloft by all three abilities --- Dave Grusin I believe, flies the highest of them all. And the nice thing about this is for all of us? Dave is alive and well and doing his best work these days: He's "one of us" -- he is `happening here-and-now.' And still very much in demand as an arranger.

Most recently, Dave orchestrated a Christmas album for composer/singer/guitarist James Taylor. And I would give that CD a five star review --- if only I could! Alas, this Grusin-arranged treasure was released "only in stores" - belonging to a certain well-known greeting card company, long-famous for Christmas musical/TV specials (and which this year carried a large line of "Polar Express" products).

His new "Christmas Album" is JT's best recording in years --- especially as it showcases Dave Grusin's sparkling arrangements (for large orchestra and chorus). Its many delights are capped by a `retire-the-trophy' version of Frank Loesser's "Baby It's Cold Outside" (a simply delicious duet with Natalie Cole). In addition to arranging the album, Dave provided (as he often does) literate liner notes --- commending Taylor as "an incredible American icon." Taylor returned the compliment, saying: "It was a delight to work (play, really) with Mr. Grusin."

Incidentally, the "James Taylor Christmas Album" culminates with a song previously performed only by Dave Grusin --- as a piano solo on the first of three, "GRP Christmas" (various jazz artists) compilations. The hauntingly beautiful song is, "Some Children See Him" (composed by Wihla Hutson and Alfred Burt, who never wrote another song of note). Grusin's much earlier performance of "Some Children See Him" - plus one other "GRP Christmas" solo effort on the traditional "Lo, How a Rose E're Blooming" (my Mom's favorite carol) are my personal, all-time favorite, solo piano recordings.

After those earlier GRP compilations, this album --- "The Gershwin Connection" --- provides listeners with the best Grusin arrangements of great piano music --- superb solos by Dave, small jazz combo arrangements . . . plus lush, and lovely (and huge) orchestral presentations of some of Gershwin's best melodies.

The album opens, incidentally, with a snippet of Gershwin himself --- an amazing player-piano transcription which, through digital technology, conveys in all its shading, the composer's prodigious technique: It is as though Gershwin is in the same room with us today, playing a beautifully engineered concert grand piano. What little there is of it, amounts to a powerhouse performance of Gershwin's obscure, early composition -- "That Certain Feeling." The thrilling energy of his pianistic `stride' fades after less than a minute - replaced by the pure liquid tones of a modern piano (superbly recorded); Grusin, plays a short solo and is supported in the first chorus by clarinet, bass and drums, an enchanting celebration of a lesser-known, but oh-so-beautiful standard -- "Soon." Actually, this entire album lives up to the song title `S'wonderful' . . . and the Gershwin tune of that same name, provides this album with the finest, unaccompanied piano performance by anyone in years - a duet, actually, featuring Grusin and jazz great Chick Corea. `Alone together' -- they exchange riffs with such obvious glee and utter abandon, one would think it's the best four-handed piano performance of modern times. (Only duets by Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones -- arguably the two best piano accompanists of them all --- could rival this.) "S'Wonderful" played here emerges as a melodic / harmonic fountain of jazz brilliance that Gershwin would have loved! Not least for its subtle humor: Five seconds after the song ends, Grusin adds one sardonic `thunk' -- a single, gratuitous, bass note. You can picture Chick and Dave chuckling at the perfection of it all - including that solitary last note!) Other highlights include a pensively beautiful solo by Grusin on "Nice Work If You Can Get It" followed by the best orchestral treatment I have ever heard of two of Gershwin's finest from Porgy & Bess --- "I Loves You Porgy" (and) "Bess, You is My Woman" intertwined as I always imagined they should be. Breathtaking!

A recording like this one provides musicians (those of us who play instruments OTHER than piano) with a vivid reminder of why the keyboard will always be the `king'- especially when, as here, it is played by a musical genius. In the 14 years since this one was released, there've been very few `piano/orchestra' recordings that begin to approach this pinnacle of greatness. So while we wait for another great `spontaneous arranger' to appear - we'll still have Dave Grusin's "latest project" to look forward to. Whatever it is, we may be sure it will be good!

ONE OF THE GOOD ONES.......2003-11-19

There are many tributes albums devoted to GERSHWIN.Should you choose only one,DAVE GRUSIN's certainly won't disapoint you.It starts with a ragtime version of THAT CERTAIN FEELING that gently fades out,and ends up with a beautifully orchestrated medley of numbers from PORGY AND BESS.My personnal favorite is I GOT PLENTY OF NUTTIN'with it's change of tempo that really clicks.Listen to that cd at least twice to get you hooked.Grade A for an inspired project.

This is a good mix compilation.but you know they do it in the studio so It's all cleaned up. But RHV has some clean mixing skills. Also bad boy bill with that scratching.Overall it was released back in the day,but it's still the ish!!!!

I love Richard Humpty Vission and Bad Boy Bill for their heavy beats. This CD truly shows off how great they are at mixing House together. However, these songs are terribly dated. It's 2004... don't go buying CDs from 1997.

Dated hard house CD.......2003-08-15

Excellent mixing, lots of different tracks, classic hard hosue CD. BUT, a lot of the tracks are dated sounding and some have cheesy vocal samples that take away from the quality of the driving hard house sound (cheesy as in cheesy bad, not cheesy good). The sound of this CD is less energetic and more funky than other CDs. Its OK. I might have loved it in 1996, but its kind of boring now.

HOUSE CONNECTION is an awesome hard-bangin house Cd that all dance music fans should check out. I bought this Cd when it was first released and I still continue to listen to it all the time. BBB and RHV keep the music flowing and their mixing here is flawless. I like to mess around on the truntables, but I wish I had the talent that these 2 guys have. One just has to check out the quality of this Cd and you can see why these 2 guys are probably the best house Dj's in the country right now

I enjoy listening to this album a lot. From the start, the DJs kick off some very catchy beats and samples, and they just won't quit. Their live shows must also rock, and I definately want to see one before I die. This album contains more than just the usual beat mixing and turntable tricks. On most house music CDs, the DJ(s) would mix similar beats and styles the whole way through, but Richard "Humpty" Vission and Bad Boy Bill never mix the same beat twice, and their styles seem limitless. Anyone who does not like house music because of its repetative and monotonous nature, would probably change their mind when they hear this CD. Even though the music is repetative, the DJs keep the music changing very quickly with perfect timing, keeping the energy high all the time. I have not yet gotten bored over this CD, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to dance.

This album gets five stars for the following reasons. 1. It doesnt betray its purpose with silly records like Get Ignit and Lights Out. 2. The production was hard. None of that street party music the second album had. 3. Ice Cube was always on point, and WC and Mack10 shine right along with him. This album reminds of NWA's N***az4Life. Uncompromising gangsta rap at its finest. Standout Track: BOW DOWN, GANGSTAS MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND, ALL THE CRITICS IN NEW YORK(NYC needs to be dissed for giving a talentless stoolbucket like Puffy a pass), THE GANGSTA THE KILLER& THE DOPE DEALER, DO YOU LIKE CRIMINALS, CROSS EM OUT AND PUT A K (Cube and Mac10 take shots at Cypress Hill and Q-tip), KING OF THE HILL(continued assault on Cypress Hill on this dope diss record), 3 TIME FELONS etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: Westside Connection's Bow Down is one the best rap albums from a group in 96. Hard edged rhyming over gritty beats. Just a great album period. BOW DOWN!

Dub C is off the hook on here, dude is the knockout punch for real.

Great album from west coast's supergroup.......2006-11-12

Westside Connection united three of the west coast's strongest rappers in 1996 for their first album, "Bow Down". "Bow Down" is great because it is one of the hardest, most unapologetically gangsta rap albums released from the west coast since the days of NWA and Compton's Most Wanted. While Ice Cube doesn't rap in the stunning consciousness or social relevance as he did on his solo albums, he is well surrounded by fellow vets Mack 10 and WC, who display a great chemistry and play off each other's verses. Consistent is the word to describe this album. Every track is just as hard-hittin' as the last one, with threatening lyrics and chanted hooks that'll have you yelling along with them. The production fights against the reign of g-funk that had taken over the west coast in the nineties, using simple, hard drums and synths to create a vibe reminiscent of an earlier west coast sound. While this was not the most original album to emerge from the west coast, it's a great album to ride around to or play at any time, it's an angry and entertaining ride with three of the west coast's greatest, and the whole feel of the album is great. I recommend it to any fan of west coast hip hop or 90s rap, it's a really underrated album.

"Bow Down" is a great start, the trio drops threatening, murderous lyrics with a great hook over an awesome, super-tough beat. "Gangstas Make the World Go Round" represents their style and coast, it has good production and a funny chorus. They throw in their two cents on the east-west coast beef in "All the Critics in New York", which is followed by the entertaining "Do You Like Criminals". "The Gangsta, the Killer, and the Dope Dealer" has the best beat on the album, another ultra-rough song where they straight-up represent. "Cross 'Em Out and Put a K" will have you chanting along with the hook, guaranteed, an awesome song. On "King of the Hill" and "3 Time Felons", WSCG ignites the beef with Cypress Hill that would ensue for the next few years. Both are good songs too. "Westward Ho" is a humorous and funky song about dealings with women, I really like it. "Hoo-Bangin'" is an awesome song, I love the hook and beat, one might call it a classic.

Granted, "Bow Down" is not the most artistic or original album ever created, and listeners looking for another "Death Certificate" or album of that nature should look elsewhere. But this album has some of the most entertaining, roughest, and menacing music hip hop has ever had to offer. The supergroup of Mack 10, Ice Cube, and WC has rarely been passed in terms of talent, and this album shows why. Highly recommended to any hip hop fan.

Great album that made it's point to the East Coast.......2006-07-11

I only picked up Bow Down a few months ago and at the time I wasn't expecting that much from it, but I ended up being surprised at how good Westside Connection's debut effort was. I already owned most of Ice Cube's other work and I believed (like most others) that he hadn't really done anything significant since Lethal Injection. However in 1996 at the height of the tension between the East & West, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC dropped this gem of an album. On this site and on some other sources I have seen some fairly negative reviews of this album and they are unfair in my opinion. I suspect most of the bad press towards this album was from East Coast critics, the very people this album was targeting, and i'm not surprised they didn't like it, about half the tracks on the album are disses or have references to the East Coast. Whether the East Coast will admit it or not though, there was a lack of respect given to the West, and this album legitimately adressed that.

The album itself has several great tracks, Bow Down, All The Critics In New York, Do You Like Criminals?, The Gangsta The Killa and The Dope Dealer and the Cypress Hill diss, King of The Hill (which WC refused to take part in) among the best. The beats are seriously heavy and sound like a post G-funk era of music, there is not a bad beat on the album, and though it only has 10 tracks there is really nothing you could call filler on here. As for the emcees themselves, Ice Cube is definetely a cut above, and despite what some say, he was still clearly relevant in 1996. I hadn't heard much of Dub C before listening to this album, but his flow is great though he can't match Cube's lyrical intensity, and though I haven't always been a great fan of Mack 10, he does a good job on this album. Overall a great album, may have angered New York but the West Coast had good cause to be upset with their treatment from the East, and this album made that point, when some others were trying to diffuse the situation. 4.5 stars, only misses out on a 5 because a few of the songs are only O.K (though not bad), I also would have liked to see Westside Slaughterhouse on here, as I don't own Mack 10's debut album and it was their first song together, otherwise highly recommended.

A Zen Like CD.......2007-01-19

First time I heard Corrinne May I was on a Singapore airline flight. I fell in love with her "Every Beat of my Heart". I had just fallen in love and was traveling with my love, my MAK. Every word of the song, every beat of the song, synchronized with every beat of my heart and kept me in my heart which was filled with love for him, for the love that was consuming me, for the love I had for every moment of my life and for the love I felt for everyone & everything. I synced his music player with mine and when Corrinne sang:

"Cause I don't know
Where your journey goes
Or how long it will take to unfold
But as long as we keep this moment shining in the dark
I will be watching over every beat of your heart"

I'd put my hand on his heart and feel the tenderness and fragility of his heart in my heart. I knew with certainty that the tenderness and fragility in my heart had made a connection with tenderness and fragility of his heart when I was filled with ecstasy and grace.

As I listened to her other songs, I noticed that I like them as well so I decided to buy the CD. It took a while to find her CD (not in stores in US) and even longer to order it. My soul searching is very intense lately and that might be why I now find heart drawn to another song on this CD, "Everything in its Time".

Her songs talk to me because she writes from everyday life material and sings from her heart. That is why as I go through my life, I relate to different songs of hers. Of course, this greatly influences how I rate the CD; how it connects to me, how it warms my heart and Not the sophistication of the music, the voice, the arrangement, the quality of the recording, etc. Still, I am sure my holistic experience would not have been so great without the quality of all aspects which make this a great CD. I plan to give it as Gift to those whom I hold close to heart.

not as good as her first.......2006-01-27

When I got this album I was a little disappointed. Most of the songs on here are generic pop. There just isn't that many beautiful songs on this album as on her last one. It is more upbeat than the last one though. I was hoping for more pretty songs though. The best songs on here are 'Angel in Disguise' and 'Safe in a Crazy Wolrd' in my opinion. The other songs arn't bad but they don't suite my taste. The lyrics on most of the songs are good and meaningful, that's not the problem. I think the music itself sounds a little over processed and a little too much like regular pop. I think the cymbals(drums and percussion) are over used, In my opinion they ruins some of the songs such as 'The Birthday Song' and 'Every Beat of My Heart'.

Still it's an ok album and personally I think it's worth it if you can get it used on Amazon. It just isn't as special as her first one. Listen to longer samples at CDBaby.com .

Exquisite and honest.......2005-12-17

Corrinne's voice is crystal clear and gentle. With this most recent cd Corrinne has truly evolved into a sensation. The tracks on this cd are each individual, lovingly written vignettes of life.

She does not force her voice toward you yet the result of hearing her music is indelible. She complements her vocal clarity with her accompished piano in waves of emotion. Corrinne's music is hers and when she sings the whole experience of listening is honest. Her melodies here are hardly ephemeral, they're quite memorably lovely but it's her warmth that you carry with you once you've been struck by her music.

Todd Snider's fifth disc opens with a pleasant, chugging roots-rock sing-along--the title track--then kicks into a jokey folk number, "Vinyl Records." In a tongue-twisting tumble of a chorus, Snider shuffles through his record collection, name-checking classic rockers and country stars, longhaired hippies and softheaded folkies. The balance of the disc bears out these diverse influences: New Connections is a stylistic smorgasbord, serving up earnest introspection ("Rose City," "Class of 85") and heavy-hearted ballads ("Close Enough to You," "Waco Moon") alongside wisecracking novelty cuts ("Beer Run," "Statistician's Blues"). There's even a taste of clarinet-addled swing in "Broke" and a cover of John Prine's "Crooked Piece of Time," to which Prine himself adds his unmistakable vocal scrape. snider finds his true form.......2003-03-09

On his first albums Todd Snider sounded like the new Tom Petty. There were some promising songs though, like Joe's Blues and Doublewide Blues, that had their own sound. On this new album New Connection, everything fits like a glove. Great songs, easy, laidback singing, beautiful arrangements, a band that has just the right feel for "near perfect" (that is: not too smooth). A masterpiece that reminds me of Eric Andersen's Blue River.
And it's one of those rare records that grow on you: it gets better with each spin.

Not the best work.......2003-01-16

Fans of Todd Snider's previous work are likely to be disapointed. His voice is slow, often unintelligible - like he just got out of bed. Lyrics and wit are not the quality of "Daily Planet" or "Happy." I really want to like this alblum, but "Vinyl Records" is one of the silliest songs about nothing I have ever heard. In fact most of this album is just forced. Looking forward to next album. In the mean time I will spin up Happy to Be Here" one more time.

Todd Snider ROCKS!.......2003-01-04

I tried to pick a favorite song on this CD but I just can't... They are ALL so good. Truly a couple of the best love songs I've ever heard (Anywhere, Close Enough to You). They are just so plain spoken, or sung, and down to earth. Tug at the heartstrings. Speaking of tugging heartstrings, Waco Moon will do that to you - quite the ode to a friend who's gone. A lot of the reason I listen to Todd Snider's music is cause he makes me smile (and sometimes grin), like in Vinyl Records (I've got about a quarter of it memorized and I've listened to it over and over..). I can just see him flipping through all his old albums. Statistician's Blues amd Broke have so much humor and so much truth in them. Both are funny, and not, cause their just too damn close to home. I love singing with Todd at the top of my lungs driving down the road and his songs make that so easy to do. Crooked Piece of Time is brilliant. New Connections just makes me feel good. And of course I'm learning to play Beer Run for around the campfire this summer.

I had never heard of Todd until I saw him open for John Prine.
I enjoyed his songs so much that I bought this album and have enjoyed it immensly. Stand outs are, New Connection, Waco Moon

Album Description

Not your typical psychedelic pop record, this was the brainchild of Marshall Chess (son of Chess Records founder Leonard), who wanted to take the Beatles' innovations of classical instrumentation, phenomenal production values, and crazy experimentation to their extreme. He assembled a very talented team: arranger and composer Charles Stephney went on to tremendous success with Earth Wind & Fire; band member Sidney Barnes was soon to work with George Clinton; and backup singer Riperton would later make her name as a solo artist. The arrangements rely heavily on choral singing, plus organ and strings, and occasional sitar, theremin and tabla: no guitars to speak of. The record integrates classical methods better than anything else going on at the time. This album will definitely be of interest to students of '60s psychedelia. Universal. 2006.
